Valerie Pellatt, University of Newcastle, UK A Practical Manual in Chinese Translation is a practical and comprehensive course for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students of Chinese. It focuses on improving translation quality by showing in detail the roles of clarity, method and awareness of purpose in translation. The text aims to encourage students to think around and behind any text they translate, to be aware of the discourse of the text against the background of related texts and related discourses in the source and target language. The focus is not only on the vocabulary and linguistic structures needed for a text, but also the way things work at a manual or visual level. Taking the text as the stimulus which triggers the translator’s schema, Pellatt looks at ways of building schemata starting from the simplest texts, to more complex texts, and covering a range of subject matter, from cultural issues, legal contracts to financial markets. Colloquial Chinese 2

A Dictionary of Chinese Characters

By arranging frequently used characters under the phonetic element they have in common, rather than only under their radical, the Dictionary encourages the student to link characters according to their phonetic. The system of crossreferencing then allows the student to find easily all the characters in the dictionary which have the same phonetic element, thus helping to fix in the memory the link between a character and its sound and meaning.

The Next Step in Language Learning Kan Qian, The Open University, UK Series: Colloquial Series Colloquial Chinese 2 is designed for people who already have some knowledge of the language but want to progress a stage further. Structured to give you the opportunity to listen to and read lots of modern, everyday Chinese, it has been developed to extend your grasp of Chinese grammar and vocabulary.

This innovative resource is an excellent study-aid for students with a basic grasp of Chinese, whether they are studying with a teacher or learning on their own. Selected Contents: Terms and Abbreviations used in the List. List of the traditional 214 Radicals. List of 943 Selected Chinese Characters. MODERN GRAMMARS Routledge Modern Grammars provide up to date exercises and tasks for language learners of all levels, from beginner to advanced. The Modern Grammars are divided into two parts. Part A covers traditional grammatical categories such as agreement, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Part B is carefully organized around language functions covering all major communication situations. No prior knowledge of grammatical terminology is assumed and a glossary of grammatical terms is provided. Each grammar is accompanied by a Modern Grammar Workbook, which provides a wealth of exercises graded in difficulty, clear cross-referencing to the Modern Grammars, topical exercises designed to develop the user’s vocabulary base and a complete answer key.

The modern grammars are available in: • Mandarin Chinese • French • German

• Italian • Russian • Spanish

I am the author of the Michel Thomas courses to learn spoken Mandarin. Innovative approaches to language teaching is one of my passions. So I am always on the lookout for texts and resources to support me in my journey.

I have used most of the Chinese grammars out there. This is far and away the best. The entire series is outstanding. Why? Because it's totally practical without getting stuck in grammatical obscurities. It reflects the actual, contemporary use of the language as it is used by ordinary, educated speakers. The first half of the book reviews all aspects of the grammar in a user-friendly way. The second half of the volume deals with how to express anything you could wish to say in contemporary Chinese using the patterns of the language as would a native speaker. Over the time I spent designing cutting edge courses for English (and now also French) speakers to really learn to speak Mandarin in the least amount of time this book was one of my most valuable resources. I cannot recommend it enough. What I have found is that I continue to return to Modern Chinese Grammar year after year and am always happily surprised with its simple explanation of potentially complex topics. – Amazon.com customer review

The Iranian languages form the major eastern branch of the Indo-European group of languages, itself part of the larger Indo-Iranian family. Estimated to have between 150 and 200 million native speakers, the Iranian languages constitute one of the world’s major language families. This comprehensive volume offers a detailed overview of the principle languages which make up this group: Old Iranian, Middle Iranian, and New Iranian.

Series: Comprehensive Grammars

• coverage of all parts of speech • full cross referencing • well selected and illuminating examples. The book is organised in such a way to promote a thorough understanding of Polish at all levels of structure; the sound system, formation of word and phrases and sentence construction. It offers a stimulating analysis of the complexities of language, providing clear explanations and examples of each point.

The Iranian Languages is divided into fifteen chapters. The introductory chapters by the editor present a general overview and a detailed discussion of the linguistic typology of Iranian. The individual chapters which follow are written by leading experts in the field. These provide the reader with concise, non-technical descriptions of a range of Iranian languages. Each chapter follows the same pattern and sequence of topics, taking the reader through the significant features not only of phonology and morphology but also of syntax; from phrase level to complex sentences and pragmatics.

This text should be the standard reference work on Polish grammar.

Ample examples on all levels are provided with detailed annotation for the non-specialist reader. In addition, each chapter covers lexis, sociolinguistic and typological issues, and concludes with annotated sample texts.

A Short Etymological Dictionary of Modern English

Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies

NEW

The Khoesan Languages Edited by Rainer Vossen, University of Frankfurt, Germany According to a widely accepted hypothesis, the Khoesan languages represent the smallest of the four language families in Africa, geographically distributed mainly in Botswana and Namibia. Today, only forty or so Khoesan languages may still exist, with about 120,000 native speakers. In other words, most Khoesan languages were already extinct before a sound scholarly interest in them could begin to develop. This volume presents descriptive, typological, historico-comparative and socio-linguistic material on Khoesan, much of it drawn from the author’s own field work. July 2010: 234 x 156: 700pp Hb: 978-0-7007-1289-2: £175.00

The Tai-Kadai Languages Edited by Anthony Diller, Australian National University, Jerry Edmondson, University of Texas at Arlington, USA and Yongxian Luo, University of Melbourne, Australia The volume goes a good way towards remedying the lack of available grammatical descriptions for Tai-Kadai. With consultations and input from a range of contributors, the book is a compact 40,000-word overview of Thai. The work includes relevant cross-referencing to sections of the volume treating other languages in the family, as well as sign-posting to sources in the bibliography. 2008: 234 x 156: 704pp Hb: 978-0-7007-1457-5: £175.00 eBook: 978-0-203-64187-3

The Celtic Languages Edited by Martin J. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to provide a comprehensive and up to date account of the modern Celtic languages and their current sociolinguistic status along with complete descriptions of the historical languages. With contributions from a variety of scholars of the highest reputation, The Celtic Languages continues to be an invaluable tool for both students and teachers of linguistics, especially those with an interest in typology, language universals and the unique sociolinguistic position which the Celtic languages occupy. This dictionary gives the origins of some 20,000 items from the modern English vocabulary, discussing them in groups that make clear the connections between words derived by a variety of routes from originally common stock. As well as giving the answers to questions about the derivation of individual words, it is a fascinating book to browse through, since every page points out links with other entries. It is easy to pursue such trails as the longer articles are written as continuous prose clearly divided up by means of numbered paragraphs and subheadings, and there is a careful system of cross-references. In addition to the main A-Z listing, there are extensive lists of prefixes, suffixes, and elements used in the creation of new vocabulary.

The Concise New Partridge is a spectacular resource infused with humour and learning – it’s rude, it’s delightful, and it’s a prize for anyone with a love of language. 2007: 246 x 189: 744pp Hb: 978-0-415-21259-5: £27.99 eBook: 978-0-203-96211-4

Atlas of the World’s Languages

3RD EDITION

P.R. Wilkinson

Edited by R.E. Asher, University of Edinburgh, UK and Christopher Moseley, University College London, UK

Praise for the The Thesaurus of Traditional English Metaphors: ‘This book is a fascinating work and a great scholarly achievement. It is well worth browsing individual (sub-) sections, and there are interesting, surprising and often amusing discoveries to make. This book should find its place in many academic and reference libraries, and will be of interest for all those with an interest in cultural history, dialectology, folklore, English literature, language and linguistics.’ – www.linguistlist.org This absorbing collection of metaphors includes a variety of expressions with figurative meanings, like similes, proverbs, slang and catchphrases. It is the result of a lifetime of work on dialect and metaphor and gives an overview of the folk wisdom expressed in figurative expressions. The author draws on his extensive contact with the rural cultures of Dorset, Cornwall, Yorkshire and Lancashire, but has also included a range of sayings from North America, Australia, Scotland and other English speaking countries.

Before the first appearance of the Atlas of the World’s Languages in 1993, all the world’s languages had never been accurately and completely mapped. The Atlas depicts the location of every known living language, including languages on the point of extinction. This fully revised edition of the Atlas offers: • up-to-date research, some from fieldwork in early 2006 • a general linguistic history of each section • an overview of the genetic relations of the languages in each section • statistical and sociolinguistic information • a large number of new or completely updated maps

Presenting contributions from international scholars, covering over 6,000 languages and containing over 150 full-colour maps, the Atlas of the World’s Languages is the definitive reference resource for every linguistic and reference library.

This new edition includes ten completely new articles, introducing new areas like slang language and new technologies.

Second-Language Acquisition

Edited by William J. Idsardi

Edited by Patrick Hanks, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic and Rachel Giora, Tel Aviv University, Israel

Edited by Lourdes Ortega

Series: Critical Concepts in Linguistics

Series: Critical Concepts in Linguistics

Apart from philology, phonetics is the oldest tradition within linguistics as a practising science. Hermann von Helmholtz published On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music in 1863, Alexander Melville Bell published Visible Speech in 1867, and those works remain vital and relevant today. Phonetics is a truly interdisciplinary endeavour, drawing on work from anatomy, computer science, electrical engineering, neuroscience, physics, and psychology, as well as from linguistics.

Series: Critical Concepts in Linguistics With contributions from Aristotle to Lakoff and Johnson, and incorporating the work of philosophers, linguists, literary theorists, and cognitive psychologists, this wide-ranging and multidisciplinary six-volume collection on metaphor and figurative language is a new title from Routledge’s Critical Concepts in Linguistics series. Metaphor and Figurative Language is fully indexed and has a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editors, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is an essential library purchase and is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital reference work and research tool. NEW 4 VOLUME SET

Pragmatics II Edited by Asa Kasher Series: Critical Concepts in Linguistics A new title in the Routledge Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Linguistics, Pragmatics II is a four-volume collection of the very best scholarship on pragmatics. Pragmatics (1998) was the first comprehensive collection of the field’s canonical and cutting-edge research, and this new collection now takes full account of the many important developments that have taken place since its appearance. Pragmatics II also includes coverage of areas without the scope of the first collection, including sections on ‘Silence’ and ‘Typology’. With a full index, together with a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, Pragmatics II is an indispensable work of reference. It is destined to be valued by scholars, students, and researchers as a vital research resource. February 2010: 234 x 156: 1600pp Set Hb: 978-0-415-47795-6: £725.00

Second-language acquisition was born in the late 1960s as an interdisciplinary enterprise that borrowed equally from the feeder fields of linguistics, language teaching, child language acquisition, and psychology. Since then, it has expanded considerably in scope and methodology to the point that for many, by the end of the twentieth century, it had finally reached its coming of age as an autonomous discipline, a discipline that today is more than ever undergoing change, renovation, and expansion. This six-volume collection, a new title in Routledge’s Critical Concepts in Linguistics series, offers a comprehensive survey of this burgeoning field, its accumulated findings and proposed theories, its developed research paradigms, and its pending questions for the future. Including both classical and cutting-edge research, the collected materials offer a cogent and nuanced panoramic of the past, present, and future of second-language acquisition research. Selected Contents: Volume 1: Foundations of Second Language Acquisition Volume 2: Main Themes in Second-Language Acquisition Volume 3: Universal Grammar and Second-Language Acquisition Volume 4: Cognition in Second-Language Acquisition Volume 5: Social Dimensions of L2 Learning Volume 6: Second-Language Acquisition and Instruction March 2010: 234 x 156: 2400pp Hb: 978-0-415-45020-1: £975.00

4 VOLUME SET

Semiotics Edited by Peer F. Bundgaard and Frederik Stjernfelt Series: Critical Concepts in Language Studies Semiotics (the study of sign processes – semiosis – and sign systems) embraces linguistics, philosophy, and literary studies, as well as linking to anthropology, art, psychology, and biology. This new Routledge collection helps to make sense of the huge interdisciplinary corpus of scholarly literature and brings together the best and most influential materials from ‘the first phase’, neo-classics from the institutionalization of semiotics in the 1960s, and contemporary works illustrating the ongoing development of semiotics and its widening applications (for example, in the natural sciences). Volume One (‘Philosophy’) collects pre-modern material showing the genesis of semiotics from Locke to Peirce, along with a range of work from the last thirty years. Volumes Two and Three focus on ‘Linguistics and Literary Theory’ and include key work from recent developments in cognitive linguistics and cognitive semantics. Finally, Volume Four (‘Psychology, Biology, Anthropology’) gathers the best offerings from other disciplines, and from emerging fields such as ‘biosemiotics’. March 2010: 234 x 156: 1600pp Hb: 978-0-415-47681-2: £650.00
