2008preview With just five players returning from last year’s squad it should be clear that the 2008 outlook for UMKC’s softball program can’t fairly be based on last year’s results. The story for the 2008 squad is one of additions. It will certainly be hard to miss five extra healthy bodies during the games, the biggest addition for this year’s team is a coaching staff that has tripled in size. Head coach Meredith Smith adds two assistant coaches - Jamie Beucke and Shae Crowley - this season, as well as a volunteer assistant and a student manager. All four new members of her staff bring considerable softball experience to the program. With the added staff, Smith is better equipped to work with her players as she begins the rebuilding process. The rebuilding process begins with the

pitchers. Although three players from last year’s pitching staff return to the squad for 2008, Samantha Hurst is the only one slated to be a part of the pitching rotation.

tage of Baker’s solid leadership presence. Elected team captain, Baker also made the transition this season to first base, playing the corner for the first time in her softball career.

“Last year we were forced to do some things that we wouldn’t have normally done,” said Smith. “As we struggled with injuries, we had to ask some players to fill roles they weren’t ideally suited for. Credit to Alicia Baker and Carli Slagle, but it was unfair to them to be put in that situation.”

“Alicia is someone that our team looks up to,” said Smith. “While we had our eye on her, the team chose her as a captain. With four of the five slots in the infield potentially filled by freshman, her leadership will be important this year.”

For 2008, UMKC adds three new pitchers: freshman Taya Upkes and sophomores Ashton Kistler and Nicholle Ellis. “We’ve added three new pitchers this season,” said Smith. “Taya has continued to work hard throughout the fall and has gotten better. We haven’t had a chance to see much of Nicholle and Ashton, but what we have seen has been impressive. They have all worked hard and have the right attitude to make an impact with our team.” As the sole returning member of last year’s pitching staff, Hurst will be relied upon to be a key player for the Kangaroo staff. “Sam’s a leader both on and off the field for us,” remarked Smith. “Since she’s been here for a year and has an understanding of our expectations, our new additions look to her to set an example in practice and in workouts. On the field, she is the key to our pitching staff, as she provides a good contrast that keeps batters guessing.”

In the infield, UMKC will take advan-

As the sole returning member of the 2007 UMKC pitching staff, Samantha Hurst will take on more of a leadership role this season.

Catching UMKC’s improved pitching staff will fall primarily on the shoulders of Lauren Rodrigues. Projected to always see time with battery-mate Upkes, Rodrigues is making a quick transition to the Division I game. “Lauren has the best bat speed on this team and will likely do some damage at the plate, but she’s still learning how to run the game from behind the plate,” said Smith. “I see a lot of potential for her, and partnering her with Taya should bring out the best in both of them.” Backing up Rodrigues at catcher will be third baseman Megan Ussary. “Megan has the best swing I’ve ever seen,” remarks Smith. “I’ve seen a lot of good players and can honestly say hers is the best swing I’ve seen. I haven’t even tried to tinker with it.” A trio of utility players provide flexibility for Smith, with Julie Hartung and Lauren Cross both showing the arm strength to be comfortable in the outfield and the quickness and range to be good in the interior. Hartung will also be looked upon to provide protection for the big hitters in the Kangaroo lineup. Rounding out the

trifecta is Kelly Fischer. “Julie should be a middle of the lineup hitter for us,” said Smith. “She will keep teams from just pitching around our stronger hitters. Lauren has an excellent arm and good range. Kelly is one of the strongest number two hitters I’ve seen. She can do anything you need - slap, sac bunt, sac fly or whatever the situation calls for.”

After wrapping up the three-game series with Centenary, UMKC stays within The Summit League, heading to Southern Utah for a three-game set. A midweek jaunt to Creighton ensues before UMKC heads north to take on North Dakota State. UMKC returns home for a 10-game home stand before closing out the slate on the road.

UMKC opens the season with its longest road trip of the year. Heading to Tempe, Ariz., for the Kajikawa Classic - hosted by Arizona State - the Kangaroos embark on an 11-game road swing. Smith is confident about her team’s chances in the early stages of the schedule, however.

The Kangaroos have a short stop at home, meeting up with Iowa State on Thursday, March 6 before tangling with the Cyclones to open tournament play in the Shocker Invitational on March 7. UMKC then returns to Kansas City for three series, first against Indiana State before taking on Summit League foes Oakland and Centenary.

“I think we have a really good schedule this year,” said Smith. “It’s tough - but balanced - and we have a chance to get off to a good start. It will be a good experience for our team, however, and should help us in league play.”

’ 00

In the outfield, UMKC will also see an improvement this year behind freshmen Ashley Whiteside and Amanda Kinn. The two slappers will be locked in competition all season for the leadoff spot, but Smith isn’t afraid to use the capable hitters at the bottom of the lineup as well. Making a solid improvement from last year as well is Slagle. In Whiteside and Kinn, the Kangaroos will have a speedy, rangy outfield that should prove capable throughout the season, while Slagle will impress with her arm strength and accuracy.

Washington close, a lot like we played Oklahoma last season. Against Arizona State, it really depends on how we do to start - if we do well, they’ll probably throw their number one pitcher and top defense at us. We’ll have a lot of fan support that should really help.”

head coachMeredith Smith Meredith Smith is entering her second season as the head coach of the UMKC Softball program. Smith was hired to lead the Kangaroos in July of 2006. In her debut season on the bench for the Kangaroos, Smith compiled a 4-46 overall record, with a 1-16 record in conference play, as her already small squad suffered several injuries. After seeing her assistant coach bow out prior to the season, she found herself competing with just 12 healthy players in several contests on the 2007 campaign. Under her leadership, however, the team set a new school record for home runs in a season with 16, with Ashley Toft (7) and Jaci Schuyler (6) each besting the previous single-season record.

Second season Tennessee, ‘04

During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Smith served as the Director of Softball Operations at Tennessee. In this capacity, she was responsible for developing, organizing and distributing recruiting materials, while also coordinating the team’s travel arrangements. In the 2006 season, Smith helped guide the Volunteers to the SEC Championship as well as the Women’s College World Series. Prior to being promoted as a member of the UT staff, Smith served as the team’s manager in 2004-05. She handled various administrative duties and oversaw the team’s inventory throughout the season. The Knoxville, Tenn., native has also been a camp instructor for the Volunteers since 2001. As a student-athlete, Smith played collegiately at Centre College in Danville, Ky., in 2000. During that season, she tied an NCAA Division III record for most doubles in a single game with five and picked up all-conference honors and earned a league player of the week award. She then spent one semester at East Tennessee State before transferring to UT, where she was involved with the Pi Beta Phi honors society and was active with the Panhellenic Council. Smith graduated cum laude from Tennessee in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. She also holds her master’s degree in sports psychology with a minor in sports management.

6 Head coach Meredith Smith is currently one of the youngest head coaches in all sports across the NCAA Divison I ranks. Just 25 years, 166 days old when she was appointed, Smith continues UMKC’s tradition of taking a chance on young coaches.

chancellorGuy Bailey

Guy Bailey, Ph.D., became chancellor of the University of Missouri–Kansas City in January 2006. Bailey joined the University after serving as provost and the Peter Flawn Professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Texas–San Antonio. Bailey earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in his home state, at the University of Alabama. From there, he went to the University of Tennessee and received his Ph.D. in English linguistics in 1979. As recently as 1999, Bailey continued postdoctoral work in linguistics at such institutions as CUNY, Stanford and Emory University.

Second Year Univ. of Alabama ‘74

For the past 27 years, Bailey has worked as a researcher, instructor and administrator. As provost at the University of Texas–San Antonio, he confronted most of the pressing issues in higher education. He elevated hiring standards for faculty, while at the same time adding tenured positions. Enrollment nearly doubled during his term of service. By drawing on university, business and civic partnerships and increased external funding, Bailey found ways to improve the university and its urban home. He made nondiscrimination a cornerstone of UTSA.

transnational research. He and others sought and won competitive national grants and contracts to fund this prolific scientific investigation. In the field of linguistics, Bailey’s name is synonymous with meticulous research in speech and vocabulary, speech patterns, idioms and the racial mix that contributed to the rich amalgam of the language of the South. Jan Tillery, Bailey’s wife, is a frequent partner and contributor in these efforts. A partial list of his grants and research projects includes the following: funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Council for the Humanities for a radio documentary, “Honky Tonks, Hymns and the Blues;” the National Geographic Society for field interviews to study the dialects of Texas and Oklahoma; the American Council of Learned Societies for a study of the roots of Black English vernacular; and funds from the United States Air Force and Texas Instruments for computer languages and data collection and management. His publication credits comprise various studies, articles and textbooks.

Bailey’s academic interests and strengths mesh well with those of UMKC. During his years at UTSA, he invigorated those programs built around science, engineering, molecular studies, biotechnology and

the history of umkc

Although talk of a university in Kansas City began as early as the 1890s, it was not until the 1920s that talk turned to action. In the postwar decade, a board of trustees comprising leading businessmen was established, and in 1929 the charter for the University of Kansas City was granted. the evolution ofkasey kangaroo What do The Kansas City Star, Walt Disney and the Kansas City Zoo have in common? All are pieces to a puzzle concerning the question, “How in the world did UMKC pick a Kangaroo as its mascot?” The Kangaroo issue was first brought up in 1936 when the editors of The University (then named Kansas City University) newspaper decided it was time to find a mascot for the debate team. There were no organized University athletic teams at the time, yet the students on the newspaper staff still wanted a unique identity for their debate team and, more importantly, their school. The fire was lit later that year when an article appeared in The Kansas City Star titled “Kangaroo May Go to KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have a Symbol.” Interest in the mascot was also spurred by the Kansas City Zoo’s purchase of two baby kangaroos about that same time and the subsequent publicity generated by the Kangaroo nearly suffered a quick demise in 1937 when the editors of the University yearbook The Crataegus decided that a kangaroo was not an appropriate university symbol. They opted to delete the proposed kangaroo emblem from the yearbook’s feature section, but supporters of the mascot began a vocal attack.

42

Just as the criticism began to mount and support for the kangaroo was beginning to wane, famed cartoonist Walt Disney came to the rescue. In April 1937, a leading KCU political group, the CO-OP Party, won a landslide election with “Kasey the Kangaroo” as its insignia. “Kasey,”the group stated, fit KC. The same month, the first issue of the KCU humor magazine The Kangaroo was published. Six months after the first kangaroo appeared on the cover, another kangaroo was featured, this time alongside Mickey Mouse. The artist of this drawing was the famous Disney, and support for the kangaroo mounted. In a matter of a few years, The Crataegus folded and The Kangaroo became the school’s yearbook. Over the years, the kangaroo went through numerous changes and refinements before a final edition was agreed upon via a special committee appointed by then-chancellor Randall Whaley. The Athletics Department introduced a new set of marks in November, 2004, working with Plan B. Branding of San Diego, Calif., to create the identity. The Kangaroos is a unique nickname, and UMKC shares it with a slight few. Just two other colleges in the nation use Kangaroos as its nickname — Austin College in Sherman, Texas and State University of New York at Canton. The Akron Zips, meanwhile, use the kangaroo as its mascot. To the right and below: Kasey Kangaroo has gone through several makeovers throughout the years, culminating in the current athletic marks and mascot.
