May His Force be With You! For nearly sixty of my sixty-seven years I have been enthralled by almost every aspect of the 20th Century Art Form, films and cinema.

From my first experience of John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brenham in Rio Bravo I have been unnerved, frightened, shocked, amused, excited and bored alongside being entertained, moved to tears and side splitting laughter! Therefore it’s an impossible task to pick one film that I can say is my favourite! However there have been movies that have defined a genre and innovations that have changed the very method by which films are made, produced and distributed for our delight! When shooting the original, arguably the best, of the Jurassic Park franchise, Steven Spielberg changed the way in which special effects were made by ditching the time honoured method of stop-go animation which had been in use since King Kong ruled from the top of the Empire State building in 1933, for the newly emerging technology of Computer Generated Images (CGI) with which the Marvel Franchise would remain on the flat page of a comic! One of the other defining developments was when in the mid 1970’s George Lucas started filming the first of the Star Wars films that changed the way we see Science Fiction on the screen. I first saw Star Wars at Colmore Circus in Birmingham in 1978, and yes, it can be described as cowboys and Indians in Space, but as in Jurassic Park the last twenty minutes are edge of your seat, adrenaline- fuelled pure cinema magic! With all the Star Wars movies we are not only introduced to breath-taking special effects and fast moving action, but are also invited through the story to explore a spiritual dimension with ‘The Force’. This concept has continued all through the original trilogy, the tragedy that was the trilogy of prequels and the first films in the Disney reboot, and if all the speculation around the next one to be released this December is correct ‘The Force’ will be there once again!

There is no space in these few words to discuss the whys and wherefores of ‘The Force’ however, in the original ‘Star Wars’ film, now renamed ‘Star Wars A New Hope’, there is a defining light sabre duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. Obi-Wan engages in the duel to distract the Storm Troopers giving our heroes the opportunity to make their way safely onto the Millennium Falcon. When Obi-Wan knows his task is complete, he lowers and switches his light sabre off saying to Darth Vader “If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you could ever imagine”! The subsequent story line (and continuing storyline) has Obi-Wan offering help and support in a way he was not able to do while alive! When hearing this dialogue, it reminds me of Jesus on the cross and you could quite literally put the words into Jesus’ mouth “If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you could ever imagine”. Jesus’ death, resurrection and gift of the Holy Spirit has made him more powerful than anyone in all of human history could ever have imagined! The force ‘The Holy Spirit’ is not restricted to a few as in the Star Wars Saga who tune in! The power of the Holy Spirit enables all to live life in all its fullness with all its ups and downs!

May the Force of The Holy Spirit be with you today, tomorrow and for all eternity. Stephen French
