FROM THE DESK OF BULLET IN EDITOR

Message from District 2430 District Governor from Turkey

Dear fellow Rotarians,

We are having a great tragedy now in our District.

This morning at 4 am we had an earthquake at 7.7 Richter scale, and many aftershocks, reaching up to 6.6

This afternoon we had another earthquake which is not an aftershock, it is 7.5 Thousands of buildings were collapsed, hospitals collapsed, highways were broken. The cold weather conditions make life even harder and since roads are not available, we can not send goods. The main natural gas line was broken so electricity and heating is the biggest issue at the moment.

So far about 1000 deaths were reported, and thousands of casualties. The government officials can not predict how many final number will be so the aftermath is frightening. This earthquake was felt in and affected 10 cities, which are;

• Kahramanmaraş

• Gaziantep

• Antakya

• Adana

• Diyarbakır

• Osmaniye

• Kilis

• Adıyaman

• Malatya

• Şanlıurfa

As the three districts we are now applying to the Disaster Response Fund, but when the large area affected is considered we will need more to recover. Our clubs have already started donating to our District’s disaster accounts and we kindly invite you to provide your support.

Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria

Turkey and Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake on 6 February that has killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and left people across the region without shelter in bitterly cold winter weather.

The Rotary world responded to this catastrophe immediately. RI President Jennifer Jones activated our disaster response efforts, communicated with the affected districts, and encouraged governors in those regions to apply for disaster response grants and share information about their relief efforts so that Rotary can amplify the calls for support.

Rotary's project partner ShelterBox has an emergency response team assessing the needs in the region and how it can respond. That team is communicating with Rotary district leaders. Our service partner Habitat for Humanity International is also working on its response. Many Rotary members are asking how they can help. Here's how to have the greatest impact:

Give to The Rotary Foundation's Disaster Response Fund. Donations help clubs and districts provide aid and support rebuilding efforts where the need is greatest. The funds are distributed to affected communities through disaster response grants. The Disaster Response Fund can accept cash contributions and District Designated Funds (DDF). Donations to the Disaster Response Fund are combined and cannot be designated for a specific disaster.

Support local initiatives. As we learn about local response efforts that are being led by clubs and districts, Rotary raises awareness about how to support them. People can then support these projects by working directly with Rotary members in the region. If you want us to publicize information about local response efforts, write to relief@rotary.org.

Shelter Box

Powerful earthquakes have ravaged southern Türkiye (formerly Turkey) and northern Syria, killing thousands of people and flattening 20,000 buildings.

Homes have been destroyed or left unsafe and people have been sleeping in the open. Around 23 million people could be affected across the two countries.

To make matters worse, freezing temperatures are presenting an immediate risk to life for people who are too afraid to return home or have no home to go back to.

In northwest Syria many buildings were already damaged by years of civil war, and that’s where some of the worst damage has been reported.

With 3 million people already displaced by the war, Syria is at breaking point. Families are facing harsh living conditions, freezing temperatures and diseases like cholera. They have faced the destruction of war, only to be hit again by these events.

Earthquakes have caused massive destruction in Turkey and Syria. Those affected need emergency shelter now. Our partner, ShelterBox, is sending an emergency response team to the region. Learn more at: shelterbox.org/turkey-earthquake and at: on.rotary.org/3XdSVwn

Rotary International has decided that From now until 31 March, all donations to our Disaster Response Fund will be used to aid Turkey-Syria earthquake relief projects.

Glimses of the Evening

The world's first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago.

They named their new club "Rotary" to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members' various places of business. During the 1911-1912 Rotary year, the association became international. The National Association of Rotary Clubs, which became the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912 adopted the name Rotary International (RI) in 1922. A lot has changed in Rotary since 1922 as it has continued to change and grow with this times to be the thoroughly modern organisation it is today. Learn more about the history of Rotary.

23rd February- Rotary’s 118th Anniversary

The humanitarian activities of Rotary international are organised through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary's charity. Rotary International has a number of programmes that are not humanitarian but focus on youth and leadership.

Rotary International provides an immense network of clubs and their individual members all of who interact in creating and joining together in service and fellowship. This is explained in greater detail under the tabs 'What we do' and 'Get involved' but it is worth repeating that individuals as well as clubs can use the Rotary network to fulfill their personal service goals; an example would be volunteering to participate in a Polio National Immunisation Day in India.
