Plans are well under way for Lakewood Ranch to have its own branch of the Manatee County Public Library System What's in store and what needs to be done? Learn about the effort from leaders of the Friends of the Lakewood Ranch Library Inc Our speakers will be Sue Ann Miller, Ed D , Friends' president; Rhonda Leiberick, APR marketing director; and Tammy Parrott, Manatee County Library Services manager. Miller moved to Florida in 2016 and saw the need for a library convenient for Lakewood Ranch residents. Other people also saw the need; together, they started the Friends group. “The Lakewood Ranch area needs a library that’s close to home because of the value and impact libraries have on early learners and teens,” she said.

OCT. 27

So much to celebrate with our Governor

District Governor Neil Snyder chose a great day to visit our club on Oct. 20.

We inducted a new member, recognized two members for their support of The Rotary Foundation and welcomed back a former member who brought good wishes and a donation from her new club.

Former Lakewood Ranch Rotarian Christine Peak joined us in person from the Rotary Club of West Seattle and presented a check for $5,000 for hurricane relief efforts collected from her fellow club members.

“Rotarians have been my life blood for three years," she said. "You've been my family, someone to support me through my ups and downs.”

She was accompanied by Janet Bennett, and Rotarians from her Seattle club joining via Zoom included Bruce Palmer, Martha Sidlo, Duane Ruud, John Gardiner and Keith Hughes.

Christine also updated us on what she's been doing in her club. She established the Peak Family Goodwill Endowment in honor of her late husband to support Rotary peace centers She also initiated a peace building service committee and they started planting peace poles

Neil shared photos and videos from our district disaster response team's efforts and expressed his gratitude for everything our club is doing to help with the coordination They still need volunteers Anyone can sign up and make a donation at rotaryfl org

District Governor Neil Snyder, right, observes as President Carmen Spagnola inducts Javar Baity, second from left, into our club. John Petrosky stands in support of Javar as his mentor and one of his sponsors. Frank Harris also sponsored Javar.

Christine Peak, center, brought a $5,000 donation from her Rotary Club of West Seattle to go toward Hurricane Ian relief efforts Accepting the check are District Governor Neil Snyder, left, and Lakewood Ranch Rotarian Mark Midyett, who is serving as District 6960's Disaster Committee chairman

OF GRADE LEVEL READING

Books For Kids was highlighted Oct. 11 at the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading's annual Community Update Breakfast. The joyous and inspirational morning included a keynote speaker, Ralph Smith, managing director of the national Campaign for Grade Level Reading, video presentations of the work happening in Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee and Sarasota counties, and opportunities for the attendees to affirm their commitment to children and families in the region.

A wonderful video that highlights the initiative includes an appear by Lakewood Ranch Rotarians Ted Lindenberg and Dr Sheila Halpin and Sarasota Rotarian Jim Henry You will love the adorable narrators of the video; watch it by clicking here

WORK RESUMES TO RENOVATE HOMES TO GIVE TO DESERVING VETERANS

Our Next Mission completed hurricane repairs in the past couple of weeks for units they have renovated over the past few years. The ONM leadership team also met with the CEO of Habitat for Humanity last week and learned Habitat is getting two or three homes returned to them. One needs extensive repairs, but the other two need painting, cleaning, flooring and some cabinetry work. The estimated time frame is 30 to 45 days. ONM offered to help.

ONM also received a note from the manager of Pescara Lakes, 570 57th Ave W , Bradenton, where they have done extensive work over the past few years The owner of the home on Lot 63 wants to give ONM their home A curbside inspection looks like it is something that ONM can accomplish The home suffered some damage from the hurricane, but appears to have "solid bones" that will allow us to provide a new home to a veteran who needs housing

Starting at 7:30 a m Thursday, Oct 27, we will begin the cleanup and demolition phase of the project We plan to work half days on Oct 27 and 28 and anticipate replacing the floor starting the week of Oct 31 The interior ceiling and walls appear to be in pretty good shape and hopefully won't need a lot of attention The bathroom will have to be completely renovated In addition, the hurricane damaged the carport, and we will have to replace it We are ordering materials that will take approximately 30 days to deliver Park at the office as you come into the park

Volunteers are always needed on these projects for any length of time No skills are required other than a desire to help out In the past, several Rotarians have donated lunch along with onsite work Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (no flip flops!) and bring gloves if you have them

HELP NEEDED TO LABEL BOOKS

Books For Kids needs help labeling 4,000 books to distribute to schoolchildren

If you can give much needed help, arrive at 10 a m Saturday, Oct 29, at the Annex behind the Palmetto City Hall, 600 Eighth Ave W , Palmetto, FL 34221 There will be coffee and doughnuts, of course! Please RSVP to JoAnn Shakon at jc shakon@gmail com

If you would like to participate in these efforts onsite work or ramp installation contact Lakewood Ranch Rotarian Terry Byce (terry byce@verizon net or 703 627 7765) or Greg Kisella (text 850 585 1698 or gkiselaonm@gmail com) Bob Feller, who spoke to our club in June, is still actively involved

ONM is sponsoring he annual Veterans Day Gala this year's theme is “Volunteers Our Unsung Heroes” on Nov 11 at the IMG Academy Golf Club See the flier and online sign up instructions by clicking here Our Rotary club is a sponsor of the event (This will be the night before our club's Suncoast Food & Wine Fest ) If you are able to attend or donate, please use the link provided
