As a retired chiropractic neurologist, two passions motivate Dr. Scott Brown, a Rotarian from Golden, Colorado – physical health and its sister, financial health. For 30 years, he worked to maximize performance with professional athletes and dancers and was team doctor for four professional sports organizations in Tampa. Today, due to his own financial losses in the 2008 market debacle, he said, he is a behavioral investment adviser and has a unique perspective on how brain health, physical health and financial health are intimately related.

At the Dec. 15 meeting, Bette Zaret of the Jewish Federation of SarasotaManatee talked about Impact Theatre The community educational initiative focuses on the common history of oppression and persecution of both African American and Jewish people and strives for social justice and peace The vision is to re-imagine a collaborative world exemplified by the Rev Martin Luther King Jr and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel They joined forces to fight for social justice and civil rights Impact Theatre's goal is for high school students to engage in intergenerational discussions with local people who lived through the horrors of the Holocaust and African American elders who lived through segregation and racial discrimination Students learn about cruelty both groups endured

VOLUNTEER TO HELP RENOVATE HOMES TO GIVE TO DESERVING VETERANS

The interior of Unit 63, our current project at Pescara Lakes in Bradenton, is nearly complete and some exterior work must be done. The support from the Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club has been outstanding. If you look at the Engagement Tracker under My Club in DACdb, you will see that almost 100 hours of volunteer work has been donated to this effort by club members since the project started in October 2022.

The veteran applicant for the home was turned down by the Pescara Lakes management company. Normally this is the result of too much debt. We need help identifying prospective veterans for the refurbishe homes. A candidate is an “at-risk” veteran – over 55, honorable discharge, possibly disabled, struggling to find a home, low-income. limited family support – who has at least an annual income of $25K-$35K per year with a good credit score. The costs associated with one of our remodeled homes are primarily the ground rent of $900-$1,000 per month plus utilities and insurance.

The homes are gifted to the veterans by ONM with a stipulation that they can live there until they pass or relocate. In either case, the home will transfer back to ONM, and we will prepare it for the next occupant with some minor renovation work The management company

does a credit review/background check for the Lease and ONM verifies their veterans status Unit 63 will be finished by Feb 1 and ready for an occupant We also have a unit in Colony Cove in Ellenton that could be ready as early as March 1 and we have a third unit near Pescara Lakes west of U S 41

Check with your friends, neighbors and work associates to see if anyone meets the criteria If you have a candidate, let me know and ONM will interview him or her

Thanks, Terry Byce Rotay

President-Elect Sybil Porter received her Paul Harris Fellow+2 pin at the Dec 15 meeting She is shown here with President Carmen Spagnola, left, and club Foundation chair John Bodenburg

KNOW YOUR FOUNDATION

Major donors play a large role in The Rotary Foundation's system of giving

After you have achieved a Paul Harris +8 pin, that represents a giving amount of $9,000 to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus Fund or a specific numbered Global Grant The next $1,000 you donate will bring you to the Major Donor Category Major Donor Level 1 begins at $10,000 Level 2 begins at $25,000, Level 3 begins at $50,000 and Level 4 begins at $100,000 and goes to $249,999

a Lakewood Ranch Rotarian since April 2017, is serving this year as our club's Rotary Foundation Chair. John wants to start spreading good information about how the Foundation works and its relationship to District 6960 and our club Look for monthly TRF updates here from John

At $250,000, you are part of the Arch Klumph Society, which I will cover in next month’s article

Out of our 101 active Club members, we have 10 Major Donor Level 1s and three Major Donor Level 2s. Major Donors, like Paul Harris, get credit by donating to the same three areas of the Foundation. The picture below is a Major Donor Pin. The diamond on top signifies Level 1 giving. Level 2 would have a diamond on the top and bottom. Also pictured is a Major Donor Level 3 pin.

The Rotary Club of Punta Gorda and Rotary E-Club of Southeast USA and Caribbean (District 6950) have partnered to produce a STAND WITH UKRAINE T-shirt. Authorized by Rotary International, the T-shirt is emblazoned with Ukraine's flower, the Sunflower, on the front and Rotary recognition on the back. It's also available as a hooded sweatshirt. For every shirt sold, $10 will go to Ukraine Relief via the Punta Gorda Rotary Club Foundation and the Rotary Club of Czestochowa, Poland. Shirts can be shipped both in and outside the USA.
