CLUB HISTORY Like many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence. The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974. In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC. Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88. Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger. Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season. The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden. Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way. Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

WELCOME / CONTENTS Goood afternoon and thank you for attendance here at Oxford Street today for this afternoon’s NCEL Division One fixture against Worsborough Bridge Athletic. As ever we offer a warm welcome to all connected with today’s visitors, be they players, committee, management or supporters and we hope that they enjoy their visit today, though hopefully not the result. After what was starting to feel like a never-ending Winter it appears that Spring has finally sprung in South Yorkshire, just in time for this derby fixture [feel free to skip over this paragraph if it’s throwing it down, mind]. And given that this WBA have been something of a bogey side for us in recent seasons a bit of brightness is certainly appreciated as we look to secure our NCEL status for another season.

With just four games to go retaining our place in Division One looks distinctly more likely - particularly after last Saturday’s excellent result at Athersley - though not yet a certainty and so a point or three gained today could well help us to finally relax and enjoy the run-in after what has been a difficult season at Oxford Street with so many players having departed since last season’s impressive campaign. The 2nd team have also had a tough year, but thankfully a disappointing league campaign has been made up for with some impressive cup performances, the latest of which came last Saturday with an excellent 6-2 win over Bawtry Town to secure a place in the Premier Division KO Cup Final. Up the Main! Glen Wilson // Programme Editor

Teamsheets for today’s match are available shortly before kick-off from the Main Stand at a nominal fee of 20p. Please try and have the correct change.

NCEL DIVISION ONE GEDLING TOWN 1-1 ROSSINGTON MAIN

On this day eleven years ago Main continued an impressive start to 2002 - which had seen them lose just twice in 12 - with a 1-1 draw away at Gedling Town in the NCEL Division One. The result made even more impressive by the fact that not only

CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE SUPREME DIVISION NETTLEHAM 2-2 ROSSINGTON FC

Heavy weather in December 1995 meant that Rossington still had seven games to go in the Central Midlands Supreme Division as they travelled to Lincolnshire seventeen years ago today. were Gedling one of the sides to have inflicted defeat on Main in the year at Oxford Street 11 days earlier - but The Ferrymen were on their way to securing the title. Main did not finish quite so highly, but their continued form ensured they claimed 8th place.

With little to seperate the teams they were all square at the break with Chris Dawn’s first half goal having been cancelled out by the hosts for 1-1. And they would finish level too thanks to a Gary Mountford penalty for Rossington which secured a point for the visitors, without the need to bring on current Main Assistant manager Ian Wilson from the bench.

CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION BRAILSFORD 0-3 ROSSINGTON FC

A long overdue successful afternoon twenty-two years ago today as the pre-merger Rossington FC travelled to Brailsford in the Central Midlands Premier Division to record only their second victory since the turn of the year. The second of six successive away games to end the 1990-91 season Rossington had been beaten 4-0 on the road at Rolls Royce the previous Saturday but were in control right

from the off in this fixture, establishing a 2-0 lead before halftime. Lee Storey opened the scoring for Rossington on 27 minutes, with Dave Clark doubling the advantage ten minutes before the break. In the second half Clark added a second goal with twenty minutes left to wrap up the points, whilst Rosso held out at the other end to secure a clean sheet for current Main boss Steve Lodge.

TODAY’S VISITORS A WARM WELCOME TO WORSBOROUGH BRIDGE ATHLETIC

The club originated in 1923 as Worsbrough Bridge St James, the name of the local Parish Church, reforming in 1947 as Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Club playing both Football and Cricket. Both sports were located, as they are today, at Park Road, Worsbrough.

the Amateur Cup, a highlight being the heavy defeat of Penrith, from the mighty Northern League, in 1971.

Success in the local Barnsley Leagues came to Park Road in the 1950s, with the club becoming League Champions, Barnsley Beckett Hospital Cup and Challenge Cup Winners. A partnership with the local Miners Welfare Scheme was entered into in 1959, enabling the development of the ground and facilities.

On the amalgamation of the Yorkshire and the Midland Leagues in 1982, the Club was among the founder members of the Northern Counties East League - in which they still compete.

In 1962 Worsbrough graduated to the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League, enjoying both League and Cup successes in the 1960s. Entry into the third division of the then Yorkshire League was achieved in 1971, with rapid promotion to the first division. Notable results were also gained in

10

At this time, Worsbrough’s biggest crowd of 1,603 witnessed a narrow defeat by the famous club from the North East, Blyth Spartans.

Financial backing from the Miners Welfare ended in the early 1990s with the demise of the Mining Industry. Nevertheless, major ground improvements have continued with the addition of floodlights in November 1993 and additional covered standing has since been built opposite the main stand in 2009. Work has now been completed on new changing rooms for teams and officials on the site of the old Cricket Pavilion.

NEWS & FIXTURES FORTUNE-WEST STEPS DOWN AT ARMTHORPE Local favourite Leo Fortune-West has stepped down as manager at fellow Doncastrian Northern Counties East League club Armthorpe Welfare.

Armthorpe have made it clear that they will not be asking for applications for the manager’s position, nor will they be responding to enquiries whilst they concentrate their efforts on avoiding relegation.

In a difficult season at Church Street, Fortune-West has filled the role vacated by the long-serving Des Bennett in a player-manager capacity, but the club have struggled to adapt to changes off the field.

The experienced Brian Johnston has stepped up to fill-in for the departing Fortune-West in the interim, and the former Askern Villa manager will lead Armthorpe for the remainder of the season.

The ex-Doncaster Rovers, Cardiff City, Gillingham and Rotherham United forward has chipped in with some key goals for the Welfare this season, but the club have remained at the wrong end of the table all season and are still yet to confirm Premier Division status for next season.

Armthorpe Welfare have thanked Fortune-West for all his hard work and effort throughout a challenging season and have wished him all the best for the future.

MAIN IN ACTION SAT 30TH MARCH // NCEL DIVISION ONE ROSSINGTON MAIN 4-3 HALLAM

A huge victory for the team in the light of its current predicament fighting for survival in the 1st divsion of the NCEL, and one that seemed most unlikely the way that Hallam started the match.

cross. But once again to the lads’ credit they worked hard and were rewarded when Thornton was upended as he broke into the box and Hunter converted from the spot at the second attempt.

For the majority of the 1st half we were chasing shadows and our visitors would be very disappointed to go home with nothing based on the possession they enjoyed. However they failed to capitalise on this and their scoring opportunities, and as has happened to us on several occasions, they were left to rue the day. For the opening halfhour Hallam dominated with their movement and harrying and it was completely against the run of play when Hunter opened our account. Receiving a short free-kick he dummied one defender before placing a crisp shot across the keeper into the corner of the net from 20 yards. Hallam responded and Morris hit a dipping shot into the top corner to level matters before the interval.

At 2-2 the game was very open as both sides went in search of a winning goal and both keepers were tested before Hunter completed his hattrick in the 82nd minute. However that was far from the end as minutes later Fraser increased our advantage, and in stoppage time Hallam pulled one back as they surged forward in search of some reward for their effort throughout.

Our 2nd half performance was much improved as we were more of a match for our opponents and we competed in all areas of the field. It did not look too good however when Hallam took the lead when an excellent move and cross down the right was headed past Wildey at the far post and Cook was injured attempting to prevent the

Perhaps this latest win may be just enough to secure our survival as the gap is now 11 points and both Askern and Yorkshire Amateur are struggling to gain a decent run. With 6 matches remaining however one further victory may guarantee that we cannot be caught, particularly with the run-in our rivals have in store.

MAIN IN ACTION SAT 6TH APRIL // NCEL DIVISION ONE ATHERSLEY RECREATION 2-2 ROSSINGTON MAIN A fantastic result for the Main last Saturday, and one which gave a huge boost to hopes of staving off relegation from Division One, as they held league leaders Athersley Recreation to a draw at thier Sheerin Park ground. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Main as they found themselves behind after just quarter of an hour, when a great ball floated in from the left was met by Joe Thornton and the Rec. man left Jordan Wildey with no chance as he volleyed the ball beyond him and into the net. It was afirst hald which the home side controlled throughout, showing exactly why they led the division, as Main struggled to get a foot on the ball and play. But through both luck and determination they managed to hang in the fixture at only a goal down and in the second half it was Main who took the game to the hosts. Just before the hour mark Niall Doyle struck to bring Rossington level and continue his excellent scoring run in the second half of the season. Nathan Fraser’s cross picked out the midfield man and though his initial shot was inadvertantly blocked by Adam Wisdom Doyle was alert enough to react quickly and place a follow-up shot neatly into the

bottom corner, much to the delight of the travelling Colliery support. And if that was well received, eight minutes later those who’d made the trip over got a further boost as Rossington took a surprise lead. Jonathan Cook delivering a free-kick from midfield which the home keeper completely misjudged and fumbled over the goal-line and into the net. Five minutes later though and Athersley drew back level from the penalty spot to square things up once again. John Tunney was adjudged to have brought down Cook of the home side and Thomas Harban stepped up to slot the penalty past Wildey for 2-2. Despite chances for both sides in the closing twenty minutes that was how it ended in a game where the first half showed exactly why Athersley were top, and a second that suggested we ourselves could be much higher in the table. The result proved costly for Athersley as they have since dropped behind Albion Sports in the race for the Premier Division, but it takes the Colliery one step closer to safety, leaving Askern, Appleby and Yorkshire Amateur with a lot to do. IN RESERVE SAT 6TH APRIL // DONCASTER & DISTRICT SENIOR LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION K.O. CUP SEMI-FINAL ROSSINGTON MAIN 6-2 BAWTRY TOWN After a frustrating 4-1 home defeat to Bawtry Town in the League a week earlier the 2nd team took an early opportunity to exact revenge on their opponents with a 6-2 mauling of the local rivals in the Premier Division KO Cup semi-finals. Despite goals from Gillatt and Green for the visitors Main were in control right from the start at Oxford Street and progressed on to the final in impressive style. Reece Brailey opened the scoring for Main, and their tally was soon doubled by Callum Coburn as Rossington stamped their authority on the tie. The long-serving Dean Griffiths grabbed a third for Main whilst forward Scott Maughan also got on the scoresheet with a well-taken

brace, before the scoring was wrapped up by Dave McGee to edge the 2nd team into a final that has been well deserved for their Cup exploits this season, especially having suffered the heartbreak of defeat in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup semi-finals just a few weeks ago. Rossington will now face Sutton Rovers in the Premier Division K.O. Cup Final after they overcame Shafton Villa 3-2 in their semi-final at Askern Welfare in late March. The final is scheduled for a 7:00pm kick-off on Friday 3rd May though at the time of print, the venue for the final is yet to beconfirmed by the Doncaster & District Football Association. Keep an eye on local press and your next Main Issue for details.

The 2nd team still have several games to play in the Doncaster & District Senior League, with several midweek fixtures coming up as well. On Wednesday this week they host Denaby United here at Oxford Street in a 7pm kick-off and on Saturday they’re at home again with a match against Shafton Villa, kicking off at 2:30pm. Please come down and offer your support where possible. Admission for 2nd team games is always free.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE NO. 13. THE EUROPA LEAGUE I turned on the first leg of Benfica vs Newcastle United the other week, and after about ten minutes I relaised that such is the sprawling ubiquity of the Europa League that I had absolutely no concept of what round it was at. Could be the second, could be the final, could be a group stage dead rubber. I simply didn’t know, and at no point did the commentators feel fit to tell me. You used to know where you stood with the UEFA Cup. Plain and simple; 1st round, 2nd round, bish, bash, bosh, quarters, semis, final. Same time next year lads. I could understand that. I could follow that. Now at UEFA’’s behest competitions no longer have rounds but phases, the qualifying phase, the group phase, the second knock-out phase, the tedious forgotten middle phase. And so what once were glamour ties with an obvious prise, become obstructions and chores, and sometimes even meaningless for both particpants. And if they get through all that teams then have to face some super-moneyed Champions League drop out, the football equivalent of the bright kid who’s dossed about and been kept back a year. Said kid then strolls onwards and your seventeen rounds of toil become irrelevant. I actually tried to look up how many rounds there are of the UEFA Europa League for this article, but couldn’t actually find a conclusive answer as it is dependent on all manner of factors 24

from how you qualify, where you finish in the league, or the cup you won, or how badly you cocked up the Champions League or even more romantically; your coefficient. Every player dreams of cause in holding out for a draw that improves their nation’s UEFA coefficient. The key problem with the Europa League is its vast size, and therefore subsequently its length. It is as ubiquitous as oxygen; always there, always happening. In Europe you are never more than eight feet from a Europa League fixture. It seems to be the tournament that can’t say no, cramming in competitors like commuters on a Tokyo subway train. When it comes to this tournament UEFA are Mr Creosote in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, stuffed to the brim, but still trying to squeeze in just one more wafer thin Champions League failure. To sum up the daftness of the current Europa League set-up I offer the logic of noted philosopher Alan Shearer. During some of his astute Match of the Day analysis he ventured that Newcastle would struggle to qualify for next season’s Europa League owing to the number of games they have left themselves with this season. In short they’d have more chance of qualifying for the Europa League had they not made the mistake of qualifying for the Europa League.

Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local. Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager) A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League Lee Appleby Now in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer. Jordan Wildey Young Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists. Dan Elcoat Primarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play. Chris Hanson Chris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game. Tom Harte Very good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player. David Holvey 2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air. Will Rowley 2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides. Richard Spears Very hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

MEET THE MAIN MEN Shaun Pendleton Shaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions. John Tunney John joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield. Marcel Chipamunga Young local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn. Ben Clark Young and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders. Niall likes to keep the ball moving and push forward into goal scoring positions whenever possible. midfield. Jonathan rarely gives the ball away, starting attacks and creating chances for his team mates. The controlled midfielder is also useful from free-kicks. Danny Taylor Danny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well. Brandon Fallon Brandon burst into the Main squad in March. Tall, powerful and very quick and for such a young lad he fits in very well at this level. After only seven appearances last season, we are waiting to see even more of Brandon this year. Tom McLaughlin Pace, dribbling and finishing are just three attributes that make Tom a very dangerous opponent for defenders. He can play up front or on either wing. Tom joins after several seasons with Askern Villa and will be looking to cement a starting role at the Main this term. Scott Maughan The club’s overall top scorer last season.as he make his return to football after some time away from the game. It proved very successful as he fired the Reserves into a title chasing spot. Scott is a natural finisher who comes alive around the penalty area. Dean Thornton A former regular scorer for the Reserves, Dean has returned to force his way into the 1st team. Dean is excellent with his back to goal and good in the air, but equally as effective running past the back four. A natural finisher and confident in front of goal. Adam Wisdom Adam is blessed with pace and power and his physical attributes and appetite to work make him a handful for opponents. STARTING ELEVEN THIS ISSUE’S XI... OBSCURE CLUB NICKNAMES 1. The Doonhammers The nickname of Scottish club Queen of the South and one which makes them sound like the opposition in an episode of football cartoon series The Hurricanes. It is actually a colloquial term for people of Dumfries, I don’t know why, but don’t intend to cross one to find out. 2. The GableEnders The nickname of Montrose FC, owing to the fact that houses in the area have the gable ends facing the street rather than at the terrace-ends. However, a mate of mine having misheard this nickname long believed Montrose to be known as the Gay Blenders, which is a very different thing. 3. The Hedgemen Another Scottish side, this time Brechin City whose ground features a hedge running down one touchline at the back of the terrace thus they have become known as odd men and foliage hybrids. 4. The Honest Men Thr nickname of Ayr United it stems from a line in the Robbie Burns poem Tam O’Shanter. There; you;ve learnt something at least. 5. The Gas The unofficial nickname of Bristol Rovers, who are more often known as The Pirates. The Gas is a reference to the huge gasworks that used to sit next to the club’s former ground at Eastville.

6. School of Science A long running nickname of Everton, which is thought to stem from a description of the club’s attractive style of play in the 1920s which former England international Steve Bloomer described as ‘scientific’. 7. The Mattress Makers The nickname of Atletico Madrid, which originates from their club colours being similar to those of oldstyle mattresses. Tenuous, but better than The Barbers’ Poles. 8. The Super Peasants The Superboeren is the nickname of Dutch side De Graffschap, though it is hard to determine what it is that makes their peasantry so super. 9. The Sheep Heads The nickname of another Dutch side; FC Dordrecht, it comes from folklore within the town and a story of how two men tried to get round a 17th century tax on cattle by dressing up a sheep as another man to import it into the town. 10. The Anchovies Nicknames are often chosen to reflect a great aspirational trait, so why do Spanish side Malaga want to appear oily, salty and pickled in vinegar? 11. The Squirrels The nickname of North West Counties side Formby, owing to the large red squirrel population of a nearby nature reserve. If it wasn;t for the bushy tailed ones perhaps they;d be nicknamed The Georges.

SPECTATOR NOTICE The committee, officials and all volunteers involved at Rossington Main have worked hard in recent years to establish a positive reputation for the club in both the local community and the wider footballing fraternity. We are rightly proud that this club is appreciated as one which upholds the true values of grassroots community football, and that Oxford Street is seen as a welcoming and friendly ground to visit. We ask that you help us to maintain this reputation during your time with us at the ground, ensuring that all present have a positive experience, regardless of the match result, and leave more than happy to visit us at Oxford Street again. Football is, after all, a game to be enjoyed by players, spectators and officials alike.
