I.

The purpose of Imprint 62 is to foster an exchange of ideas among scholars, students and the general public concerning the perspectives that folklore provides on the making of social life in the past and the present. The definition of imprint is to fix an event or experience so firmly in the memory that it cannot be forgotten although you do not try to remember it (Cambridge University).

PURE PRESENCE

There will be emphasis on topics such as the formation of vernacular culture, artefacts, symbolic communication and exchange, the making of the self along with daily activities and routines. The facility will engage the aesthetic, ethics and politics lived within the Taino culture. The curators will initiate and coordinate practical programs such as exhibitions, concerts, colloquia, publications, and publicity with organizations to highlight the history and culture of the Tainos who once occupied Jamaica. The Taino culture also plays a huge role in the history of Ocho Rios. The goal is to preserve the cultural resources found in the archives and to host and display the history of the Tainos that once occupied Jamaica, given the absence of a Taino Museum in the country. What is Pure Presence?

“This experience of a situation being filled with a certain presence also may be felt in the purity and aloneness of nature. In moments of quietness and solitude in nature, a person becomes aware that the natural environment itself has a presence that profoundly affects his mind and heart.”

Location: Karlshamn, Sweden Size: 5000m2 Year: 2013 Engineer: Buro Happold Architect: Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SLA)

The project was designed to gather the city’s cultural functions under one roof. The building façade is cladded with robust wooden lamellas to minimize solar gain while allowing visual connection with the inside of the building. The warm lighting scheme was done to invite people in during the dark winter months, while bench seating stretching the length of the façade will invite passers-by to sit down or engage in activities around the cultural centre. The space consists of an exhibition area, information hall, cinema/multifunctional hall, staff and administration. There is also a library which is zoned for children, adolescents, adults and a newsroom.

CULTURAL ITEM | CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The Taino Social Hierarchy The Tainos were divided into three social classes: • • •

the naborias the nitaínos or sub-chiefs noblemen

Taino society was textured and varied, but also ordered. In any Taino society, people existed within a hierarchical structure. At the very top were a class of noble rulers and priests. The chief of a Taino village was called a cacique, and the priests were the bohiques. There were some female caciques which demonstrates that political power was shared to some degree. Below this ruling class was a class of lower nobles, including the professional warriors. These people were known as nitaínos. Below them were the naborias, or the workers.

The River "A waterway is generally understood to be a natural or man-made channel through which water flows; it usually consists of flowing water, a bed, banks, and a shore. Waterways include rivers, whether free-flowing or not, lakes, ponds and still-water basins.” Ocho Rios translates to “eight rivers” and is widely known for the beautiful rivers that flow through the area and its surrounding environs.

The Tainos used waterways, mainly rivers, to navigate their way around the islands and to conduct their fishing activities. It was their main mode of transportation as they navigated dugout canoes cut from a single tree trunk, using paddles. Each canoe could accommodate up to 80 people. Mountain
