experience for me as a student of photography. This way of looking at trees led me to realize that trees, far from being uninteresting, provide spectacular subject matter for black and white photography. Trees provide us an opportunity to see simple beauty. I love the way tree branches look like lines on a map across the sky. I enjoy how tree branches bear a strange yet striking resemblance to veins in the human body. I like to contemplate the vastly different impressions a pine branch can give the viewer compared to the delicate blossoms of an apple tree. Each type of tree has its charm and unique character. I noticed that even within the same species, each individual specimen possesses quirks that seem worthy of capturing on 35mm film. My hope is that my darkroom prints captured the unique quality found in my quiet subject matter. I spent many hours perfecting each print, making sure that the skies were unified in value. I love working in the darkroom and spent quite a bit of time ensuring that my completed photographic prints conveyed the joy that I felt as I was photographing these beautiful trees and their inherent structure. My photograph prints for the Weston Portfolio were created in the darkroom by developing film and then exposing the negatives to light while experimenting with the aperture, enlarger, and magenta levels.
