Sixth Form Newsletter w/b 7 May

Page 1

Tuesday 7 May

Dear all

Experimentation and innovation are fraught with opportunities to fail…

Vs

“No one reads the newsletter”

So, the difficulty is that we communicate a huge amount using this document. If you want my message I’ve attempted to do a “Key points spoken round up”. Only a few minutes long and may be easier than reading stuff, or it may entice you to read the rest. Welcome to the brave new world…. Perhaps

And if that exciting video is not enough for you (I really need a branded backdrop!!) here is one of the ducks waking up and going for a swim before breakfast.

Have a great week

Mr Phillips

Year 12

Public exams: For the first time in many years the addition of criminology and core maths mean that we have a larger number of Year 12 students involved in public exams over the next few weeks. Please note that if an exam is in the afternoon, you are not required to come to school in the morning. We will automatically amend attendance. If the exam is in the morning, we expect you to sit the exam and then return to any remaining lessons.

Matriculation assessments: These are not public exams and are part of the data and information the school will use to support your future learning. We want you to all prepare for them but not to make them into something bigger than they are. From a student’s perspective they are about practicing sitting exam papers with exam conditions, finding out how well your interpret the language of assessment material, find gaps in your knowledge so that you can learn more. From a school perspective they are a useful tool to support future advice and guidance. Please do not read into them anything that could negatively affect your mental health and wellbeing.

Year 13

Assembly time this week – As per Miss Nejad’s message we really want you to come up through the week and then for the assembly on Friday.

Access to school from 13/5 – As long as you use the sign in app you are very welcome to come into school for the whole school day to revise. Many of you will have lessons or invitations for revision events to attend so we will see you all through the exam period.

All

Personal Tutor 1:1 – These are compulsory and extremely important to your own wellbeing, progress, and understanding of next steps. Attendance is fantastic to these but a gentle reminder about how crucial they are in your onward journey with us

Absence: All absences can only be authorised by parents or official third-party document (invite to interview/open day etc). Any illness that occurs in school you must come up to see us so that we can record the absence but also decide if really you should be getting picked up rather than making your own way home.

Signing in and out: We will reboot the sign in app but all students should sign in either using their phones or via the iPad in the work area. This is part of your agreement with the school and invaluable for safeguarding during fire alarm evacuation.

Pre-loved Prom Dresses: Have you got a Prom dress languishing in a wardrobe? If so, we'd love you to consider donating it to the Rosebery PSA so that we can help all our students to enjoy their prom celebrations, regardless of their financial circumstances. Please email psauniform@roseberyschool.co.uk if you can help.

London Interdisciplinary school: If you read below and are interested in me arranging for a talk in school – email me.

The London Interdisciplinary School is radically rethinking higher education. Our sessions are fantastic for those students who are intellectually curious, interested in a broad range of subject areas, and want to learn more about tackling the world's most pressing complex problems.

Do you think you have some students at Rosebery School for Girls that would be interested in finding

out more? If so, here's some important details:

 All the sessions we offer are free and delivered by LIS staff

 They are designed to nurture critical thinking, curiosity and interdisciplinary thinking skills

 Take a look at our revamped introductory lecture here

Lanyards: should be worn at all times (Unless you are up in the work area and have given it in for your chrome book!) Basic expectations:

 Read the newsletter in full this and every week

 Check your emails at least once a day

 Use the guest student wifi for phones

 Use the sixth form specific wifi for work devices and laptops

We have a fully stocked chrome book cupboard and as they are exclusive to Sixth Form use they are our responsibility. You do not remove the charger or plug from the cupboard. You must return chrome books straight away and make sure they are plugged in for the next user. You now have to leave your lanyard to encourage better use of our equipment.

Alumni news:

We currently have 10 students who have confirmed they will be coming in to share their stories at the Student Futures Festival. If you have older siblings who would be willing t ocome in on June 5 please can you let Mr Phillips know

Mr Phillips’s Loom channel HE advice

Y12 – From Mrs Boundy

Dear Year 12,

How are you? I came across these wise words and they summed up a message I wanted to share with you all in the run up to the matriculation exams.

Although I know you are all feeling the pressure remember these exams are the halfway point of your Sixth Form journey – a checking in point. I am proud of you for caring so much and for seeing the efforts you are putting into your studies every day. I want you to know we see you studying hard in your directed study lessons, free periods and after school. If you have not found the time to read last week’s newsletter, please do as a lot of advice in preparing for the exams went into it.

Reminders

Work experience - well done, 20 more places secured BUT this should be a priority for 84 of you! Parents please do help students with this.

Communication - Please can I remind all students to frequently check your emails, Bromcom and google classroom daily for messages from your tutors and teachers. Remember ‘I didn’t know it ‘is not a reason for not doing something, it is an excuse!

1:1 meeting with your personal tutor are part of student timetables. Failure to attend without an adequate reason will result in removal of student privileges for one week.

Sports Wednesday P5

This is now optional, with Miss Croft messaging students when there is an activity for you to join in. We will manage the attendance however it becomes ever more important to use the sign in app. Details of house events and sports day will follow the half term break.

Citizenship this Friday & 17 May

You should check Google classroom for information on how to demonstrate that you have done a suitable amount of study on the Open University website. You will not be expected to attend the classroom lesson this Friday 3 May or on Friday 17 May. Completing this financial awareness course will be checked but will also be extremely useful. The course should be completed by Friday June 7. This gives plenty of time before and after matriculation assessments.

Congratulations

To our Human Biology students in their efforts in their NEA. They will make fantastic Microbiologists! Marium A, Issy C, Kia-Jai C, Annabel D, Summer E, Zainab H, Joanna H, Julianna K, Izzy O, Ashvine P, Lucy P, Micaela Q, Anagha S, Debbie S, Chloe S, Yasmin V and Mia W.

Y13 – From Miss Nejad

Dear Year 13,

It’s the final countdown... just four school days to go! It has been lovely to have you together for assembly this Friday and I look forward to celebrating the end of school lessons with you next week. Please note that other than the below there is nothing extra that we do as we leave all of the other fun celebrations to the leavers celebration day and evening. Its business as usual up until the end.

A reminder of the details for next week are below. We look forward to seeing you there to come together for nibbles, making your mark and photo’s:

Tuesday 7 May - 13A and 13D

Wednesday 8 May - 13C and 13B

Thursday 9 May - 13E

Friday 10 May- Assembly for all upstairs in the sixth form working area

Please remember to keep bringing pictures that you would like to add to your board downstairs in the coffee bar for all to see for the next few years.

I am hearing on the grapevine that people are feeling stressed. Whilst this doesn’t surprise me, I am sad that no one has really come to see me. I feel very lonely in my office without my brood to look after. Please come and talk and know that whilst I might not be able to solve it (Phillips is good at that bit!), I am there to listen, offer advice and support in any way I can. My door is ALWAYS open to you... please walk through it.

Finally, a reminder that links to pay for yearbook and leavers celebration are on ParentPay and if you want to buy a hoody you need to visit the following website (with an additional £1.25 to be given to me to cover costs):

Shop's username: 3099

Shop's password: qkLEjUE8

The deadline to add to the yearbook and to buy hoodies is Monday 17 June.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Nejad
