T

he question that I like to ask before and during the production of each issue of ROSE & IVY inevitably circles back to - what is inspiring me at this very moment. Is it a color, a texture, or a theme? Oftentimes, it is all of the above, but one thing rings true - the aim of the Journal is not to tell you how to live your life, but it is meant to inspire you to be tuned into the beauty that exists all around. It can be a moving landscape, the perfect lipstick shade that makes you feel wonderful or a cozy meal that is both healthy and delicious. For this issue, I had the opportunity to travel to Charleston, South Carolina (my old college stomping ground) in ‘Low Country High’ to see how the city has completely transformed over the years and is a piece of American beauty. I also had the pleasure to meet Brett Heyman, the designer behind Edie Parker that is spreading nostalgia with a modern twist, one acrylic clutch at a time. With a new season comes the search for the prettiest pieces that might be your new wardrobe staples. I recommend KARA, a handbag line in the CFDA Fashion Incubator started by Sarah Law, or Malone Souliers, a duo that is changing the way shoes are designed. Breakfast is undoubtedly the most

important and best meal of the day, so why not start it out right with some mouthwatering recipes in the story, ‘Up for Breakfast’? This edition is extra special, because for the first time it can be purchased in print. While the magazine can still be viewed digitally, there is nothing quite like the physicality of an object. Something that you can treasure, keep, display and be happy that it is in your company. For details on where you can find the Journal, visit the R&I website, also be sure to visit the site for daily content! Thank you for finding and choosing ROSE & IVY. I hope that you enjoy the issue. CHEERS,

MARKE T STUDY ST YLE NOTES

First off, thank you for creating Edie Parker and capturing the era when handbags were sophisticated and evoked glamour. What inspired you to create the brand?

T

hank you for saying that, I actually love that you say that because there is a sense of nostalgia when anyone sees a bag and says ‘oh my mom had one of those, or my grandmother had one of those’, I love that connection. My grandma didn’t have them, I collected them in high school, I grew up in LA. I spent a lot of time on Melrose and I collected a lot of vintage clutches, not just box clutches, but wicker and magazine clutches. Over time I got rid of things, but I kept the acrylic ones. Every time I wore them people would respond, they would be curious about it or would want to talk about it. I combined my vintage collection with my background in fashion, I had done PR for both Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana for a number of years where I covered accessories. It became pretty evident that no one was doing evening as a category, except Judith Leiber. Companies only launched miniature version of best selling bags, so I felt there was room in the market for a fun evening collection, with a sense of humor, because it isn’t that serious.

D E S I G N E R D E TA I L S

EDIE PARKER E

die Parker is an accessory line that captures a brilliant time in fashion history, one that was feminine and dripping with glamour. We sat down with the brand's founder, Brett Heyman to hear how her fashion background culminated in the launch of her brand and her desire to touch women with nostalgia and beauty one acrylic clutch at a time.

Do you have a muse and who is 'Edie Parker'?

Edie Parker Heyman is my 6-year-old daughter. I had been working at Gucci until I had my first child and I had this sense of, if I am going to be a working mom, which I always wanted to be, I have to do something that is mine or certainly more fulfilling or more creative. It wasn’t that I didn’t like my job, I was traveling quite a bit and I just felt it was time to do something new. It is very hard to name a brand. My own name is fairly masculine and I didn’t want to name it after myself, so I named it after my daughter. But also the name ‘Edie’ is pretty evocative of these very stylish women throughout history, like Edith Warton, Edie Sedgwick and Edith Ewing Beale. I thought it was a nice name.

Being an entrepreneur is oftentimes an innate feeling that stays with you until you make it happen. Did you always want to have your own brand?

I think it evolved, I knew wanted to do something creative. I always painted, I won a pottery award in high school. I always knew that I loved to make things and that I wanted to work in fashion, but I didn’t grow up in a house where it was like, ‘go be a designer, go be an artist’, those were not practical jobs and I had practical parents. So, when I wanted to work in fashion, it was a practical aspect of it. Then after I had the success of working in fashion, and I knew enough people, I thought it was okay to try it. I don’t think it was premeditative, but it definitely wasn’t a new passion. 16

“ I ALWAYS KNEW THAT I LOVED TO MAKE THINGS AND THAT I WANTED TO WORK IN FASHION...

You previously handled the public relations efforts for Gucci under Tom Ford and then Frida Giannini. What did your experience there teach you about design?

I

started when Tom Ford was there, I was an assistant, then it was Frida. She was awesome. She is an amazing handbag designer, truly, the bags she made while I was there, as the handbag designer under Tom were truly spectacular. Then I worked at Dolce & Gabbana and then went back to Gucci. Both brands are huge houses with huge budgets, so they can work with the best materials, they care about the craftsmanship, the ‘made in Italy’ really means something, the same way that we are made in America with second and third generation acrylic manufacturers that is how they work. The factories they work with are small and family owned. All of the acrylic for the brand is made in America, because I really wanted to pay homage to how the original bags were made during the post-war period in America, all with great creativity. 17

18

MARKE T STUDY ST YLE NOTES

You incorporate luxe and nostalgic materials, which are perfection. What is your dream material or combination?

I love to use material. I love velvet and acrylic, suede and acrylic. We have done a lot mirrored and acrylic combination and I just think that the contrast is so striking and it doesn’t exist. Whether or not it is your taste, mixing textures like this that aren’t on the market, like shades of cognac and buttery suede with acrylic - it’s fun, chic, practical, it is just beautiful. How long does it take you and your team to dream up a collection? Is there one idea that is the catalyst or a multitude of things that blend together to create your vision? How has the brand developed since it first launched and how do you see it evolving in the future?

I

see twin growth. I see developing the breadth of handbags, which we do every season. We add new shapes and materials, but we do it in a very organic way. I don’t feel there is a great rush to put out a tote bag. We really want to have more customers be familiar with our product and when the time is right, when I want something new is when we introduce something new. We are developing the acrylic business and soon we are going to be introducing home accessories like coasters, trays and tissue boxes. The home collection will look like the bags. Eventually, I would like to do jewelry, eye wear and I am talking to a friend about doing a shoe collaboration. There is a lot we can do, but again there is no sense of urgency for me. I don’t need to do every category right away, we just want to do what we do well.

It is a lot of art inspiration. We are lucky to live here in New York, I have little kids, so I am in a lot of museums and there is always some Mid-Century modern artist who works with a lot of geometric shapes, or a lot of bright colors and that will be inspirational. I will research a little more about that period and artist and back it into a collection. Or, like for Pre-Fall, I was really feeling animal prints. I found this amazing circus that was in Paris and that then brings in more imagery that I hadn’t been thinking about. I started with animals and then the collection goes from there. Each collection usually encompasses about 60 different pieces.

“ I LOVE TO USE MATERIAL. I LOVE VELVET AND ACRYLIC, SUEDE AND ACRYLIC. ”

Who or what inspires you on a daily basis?

I have a lot of great old books and magazines, IdeaBooks is my favorite account on Instagram, they are awesome. They started out in London and I buy a lot of vintage books from them. I just bought a book about American folk denim that has all of these groovy pictures from the 60’s and 70’s with all of this amazing patchwork and embellishments. So just picking up a book like that is ripe with ideas. 19

MARKE T STUDY ST YLE NOTES

Who is the Edie Parker girl?

T

he good thing about the Edie Parker girl is that she really is multi-generational. She is the young, cool 20-something year old and then on the other hand, there is her mom who is buying a different bag and wearing it to events and her grandmother is wearing a different bag. We have so much range in the collection - there is the nude pearlescent box, which is just perfect and easy to sell it all day long and then there is the glow in the dark box with holographic confetti, it is for a different girl.

“ I THINK THAT BEAUTY IS IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER AND HOW YOU PUT IT OUT THERE What other designers do you admire their vision?

Haider Ackermann, I love. Sonia Rykiel, she is one of my favorites because I love the story. Phoebe Philo does a spectacular job, she is just cool. Ricardo, Karl, all of the main guys. 3 words to describe Edie Parker are...

Classic, playful and handmade At R&I we seek beauty in all of its forms. How do you define beauty?

I think about it in a personal sense - it is confidence. I think that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and how you put it out there. If you are confident and own what you are rocking or loving, then the right people respond. You don’t have to be beautiful to everyone.

he concept of creating pieces that can be worn from night to day and throughout all seasons is the genius idea from Leana Zuniga, the force behind Electric Feathers, a ready-to-wear line based in Brooklyn. The brand is comprised of basics with a twist and is unique on a few levels. For starters, all of the pieces are made in New York City and are comprised of natural and sustainable fabrics including raw silk and hand woven cottons. The spring collection is alive with color, from a bubble gum pink jump suit to a peachtoned silk lamĂŠ dress with an intricate back detail. This collection has energy, the type that we just love.

get to know May Lindstrom May Lindstrom’s unique approach to beaut y has been inspiring women, since the launch of her eponymous skin care line. She encourages women to create and relish in a beauty ritual. We caught up with May, a self-proclaimed ‘skin chef’ and discussed her luxurious products, the key to healthy skin and how true beauty radiates from within.

Your approach to beauty is very inspiring. How did your path lead you to create and formulate your own brand?

m opposite page

The Honey Mud Gentle Cleansing Silk This decadent face mask, laced with raw honey and white halloysite clay gently lifts the impurities off the skin revealing a clearer complexion. The Facial Treatment Brush Bring a spa-like experience into your everyday beauty ritual with a facial treatment brush that allows your product to be evenly applied.

y adventures into skincare began as a small girl. Growing up, I would spend full days mashing wild plants into a pulp and covering myself, and everyone who would humor me in “potions” made from these vibrant green liquids and the clays I would dig from the iron rich soil in my yard. I have been a formulator of sorts from the very beginning, moving from child's play, to my work cooking in professional kitchens, and back again to magical beauty potions. May Lindstrom Skin was born out of a desire to create blissful bookends in my day, a time-out morning and night that was just for me. I formulated for years out of personal necessity (I am blessed with highly sensitive and chemically reactive

skin), and spent much of my twenties creating bespoke formulations for those with extreme skin conditions - severe acne, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, radiation burns from chemotherapy and cancer treatments or surgeries. Following this, I yearned to create something that was simply luxurious and lovely, and yet still offered the level of efficacy that I had seen truly transform the skin of my clients. My foundation in purity and simplicity is solid, but it was time for me to again embrace playfulness and beauty in my potions. I wanted to feel something when I picked up a bottle and entered my cleansing ritual. I wanted to feel peace, joy and celebration all in that one moment. And I wanted to share that with every woman I loved and cared about so she could feel this too. 50

i

believe in simplicity. While I have given an incredible amount of attention to designing a line that creates a feeling of decadence and celebration, my very core is as basic and grounded as it gets. My formulations are not magic, it’s better than that. The changes you will see in your skin over time will not be an illusion and they will not be temporary. My goal is always to restore your own natural balance, to bring health to your skin and to illuminate the vibrancy of your beauty in a way that will grow as you do, sustainably and naturally. I know when I've completed a formula when I don't want to let it go from my own ritual - when I crave it the way I do good food, and when I can't wait to start and end my day by immersing myself in its goodness. And of course, I watch my own skin. I'm highly sensitive, and my complexion shows almost immediately if something is a win or not. When I strike the right balance, I simply glow. When I'm yet to hit the mark, it's very clear in the language of my skin. I'm insanely picky. When I strike a solid YES, it's call for major celebration!

he May Lindstrom Skin collection is handcrafted using only the finest exotic and nutrient-rich ingredients that are sourced and harvested in a mindful and sustainable manner. I purchase raw ingredients in their fresh and active state from a very small handful of suppliers who work directly with farms from all over the world. With the plant ingredients especially, this is incredibly important. It is imperative to fill each and every bottle with the most vibrant raw materials possible. That sometimes means a lot of searching and alternating areas of the world I source from for each ingredient as seasons fluctuate and certain crops are more or less abundant. I select only ingredients that are: Organic. Bio-dynamic. Wild Crafted. Cruelty free. Sustainable. Conscious. Each bottle is inspired, formulated, hand blended and personally filled from my private studio in micro-batches for ultimate freshness and efficacy. 53

Beauty rituals are what your brand was founded upon. Why do you think that it is important for women to take the time to establish and follow their own ritual?

i

believe deeply in the power of ritual, in the importance of self care and igniting our relationship with our skin and the romance of ourselves. This is my number one beauty priority. I truly feel that if each of us approached the care of our skin with this much passion and joy, that our worlds would transform. Our lives are hectic, and filled to the brim with responsibility, challenge and conflict. We pour everything into caring for each person around us - our teams at work, spouses, children, social organizations and so on and so on. But when do we get fed back? When do we take time to simply breathe and indulge

in something delicious just for us? The answer all too commonly is next to never. I am on a quest to reveal radiant skin while igniting recognition of our individual beauty. I have always been fascinated by the idea of ritual, setting daily reminders to take time out and indulge in ourselves. I am very much a romantic and I believe that the greatest love story begins with yourself and overflows from there. Each of my formulas was developed to feel so incredibly special that they would undoubtedly become a catalyst for unlocking decadent bathing rituals, creating the time and space for the personal connection you deserve.

hank you! It’s truly been a lifelong effort. In this chapter, my skin is the best it has ever been. I love that the better I care for my whole self, truly nourish and feed my skin and soul and body, my own physical beauty is reflected. I am much more confident in my skin now than I was in my twenties, and I’m excited about the decades still before me. I begin my mornings in the shower, brightening my skin with gentle (and powerfully effective) exfoliation with The Clean Dirt. The spicy and exotic aroma wakes up my senses and gives the most incredible start to my day - leaving my spirits lifted and my skin fresh and glowing. I follow with The Youth Dew, layered with The Blue Cocoon, for incomparable glow and health. The Youth Dew provides graceful aging protection, a host of antioxidant superpowers and balancing moisture. The Blue Cocoon is simply heaven on earth, and my greatest skin savior - it eliminates all redness and sensitivity, heals and deeply hydrates and calms both skin and spirit effortlessly. It’s also my favorite treatment for eyes and lips of all time. Before I exit the shower, I massage The Good Stuff over every inch of my skin, all the way to my toes, and even a few drops through my hair. It’s the sexiest thing you’ve ever found in a bottle. I call this my “fabric-free lingerie”. After exiting the shower, I mist my face, neck and décolleté generously with The Jasmine Garden, and then go about my day. In the evenings, I love to wind down with a bath. These were the breezy days during my college years, where the possibility of adventure and the idea of floating around was rather gratifying. Just like my move

Something sparked my interest and I had to discover more. lashback to 2003, Charleston was a sleepy Southern town that was hard to adjust too, especially if walking through streets of Manhattan was your former reality. There was of course King Street, south of Calhoun Street that had various boutiques and restaurants that were frequented by the locals and college students. Located just a bit east was the Old Market that was inhabited by floods of tourists eager to purchase a handmade palm basket, or candied pecans that smelled of caramelized brown sugar. There were some noteworthy restaurants like F.I.G and McCrady’s that were peppered in with your typical seafood joint serving-up hush puppies straight from the oven. For being a college town, the coffee shops were few and far between. The best cup of coffee came from Starbucks, which typically had a line that would stretch outside

alking through the doors of Brooklyn bakery, Bien Cuit is like being temporarily transported to a boulangerie in Paris. The aroma that drifts through the shop is the heavenly combination of buttery viennoisserie, like pain au chocolat mixed with freshly baked bread that New Yorkers make a pilgrimage to get their hands on. I sat down with Zachary Golper, the owner and master bread maker on how he honed his skills, Bien Cuit's first cookbook, Bien Cuit: The Art of Bread and tips on how you can create the perfect loaf in your own home. I meet Zachary on a sunny day at Bien Cuit, just after the morning hustle, where flaky croissants are savored and cappuccinos are perfectly poured. Located on Smith Street in the heart of Cobble Hill, the bakery came to be after a whirlwind career of baking around the country, France and in South America that eventually landed him in Brooklyn. In one’s life, there is often a pivotal moment that marks the beginning of your journey. For Zachary, it was in Bolivia, after years prior were spent learning the 110

artistry of cooking and baking in Oregon and Texas. It was in the middle of the night that he woke to the smell of bread wafting through the air in a small Bolivian town - something that was not common in Latin America. He soon found himself roaming the village trying to locate the source. He wandered down a narrow alleyway and found an elderly woman, in very small quarters, with a wood fire oven preparing bread in the traditional European way. It was after he tasted her bread, something he hadn’t tasted in a while, he knew he had to circle back to the United States. He returned to the States working in various capacities in Portland, Seattle and Las Vegas. He began to craft his recipes for pastries and bread by experimenting with different levels of fermentation. It wasn’t long before he had his eyes on New York, with the advice from his wife and co-owner Kate Wheatcroft; they ultimately settled on Brooklyn and opened their shop in 2011 with critical acclaim. read is only half of the story for Zachary, who has started a mentoring program with the sole purpose of giving opportunity to local high school students. baking, from culturing butter to fermentation. He wants to inspire and open their eyes to the possibilities that lay before them so that when it comes time, they can get the job that they have always dreamed. Speaking of, he is following his own dreams with the debut of the bakery’s first cookbook, Bien Cuit: The Art of Bread, which is a compilation of bread recipes written with chef and food critic Peter Kaminsky. Each recipe is designed for the home baker and is to be hand-mixed. But, how do you get that same chewy exterior? He recommends using a cast iron Dutch oven, a pizza stone and a few ice cubes to create steam. Five years later, Bien Cuit is a welloiled machine and is the manifestation of how Golper feels about food. Since he doesn’t need to be making bread every day, he has his trusty team for that, his focus has turned to responsible sourcing and farming that will inevitably make his bread even better. When asked what inspires him on a daily basis, he immediately quips that his daughter is his driving force for making him try harder and to work to make a difference in the world. He wants to improve the way that we eat, not only for the current generation, but for the future. If that isn’t a cause to get behind I am not sure what is.

three key elements for baking bread at home

1

Incorporate the highest quality ingredients you can get your hands on, preferably unbromated white flour.

2 Cold slow fermentation is important when it comes to cultivating the flavor of your bread. This means letting your starter ferment in a cold place, for best results around 46 to 38 degrees for 60 to 68 hours, in order to achieve the maximum flavor potential.

3

115

Baking your bread long enough is crucial, in order for it to develop a nice brown exterior, also known as a Maillard reaction. This yields both the mouthwatering texture and delicious taste.
