Director’s Report

Your Neighborhood

By David L. Jones Executive Director

We listened and we hope you love it as much as we do! We are delighted to bring you this latest version of the Ranchers’ Roundup in a magazine format! The transition has gone fabulously. This change has been a long time in the making…in my research learning about the Association upon first arriving at Dobson Ranch I noticed the topic surfacing during Board of Directors’ meetings and homeowner request. The 2014 December newsletter was a special edition in a magazine format. The Board of Directors decided to change the format due to its popularity amongst Dobson Ranch residents. It has been quite a process to decide on pursuing this change and we are thrilled with the result…we hope you are as well. As always we will continue to pack the Roundup with all of the favorite staples while looking to the future for innovative ideas – do you have something you would like to see featured or an idea on growing our community involvement? We always welcome the feedback. So much is happening on the Ranch! I want to bring to your attention a few of those…this month you will see signs going up at our buildings, pools, and tennis courts. Conspicuously placed signs stating the name of the location and address are being added to our facilities. They serve as general knowledge, but more importantly are imperative if there is ever emergency assistance needed – there’s no question of the address or building name. It seems like such a simple concept but goes a long way in being prepared. This notion can be applied to your home – do visitors know your address? At my house we keep a list on the refrigerator – important numbers, our address, our children’s allergies, information that may assist our babysitter, or any visitor to our home should there be an emergency. Through implementing these signs we have thought of more areas on the Ranch that would benefit – look for them in the near future. As Board President Susan Powers wrote about in her recap of the August Board meeting the Association has a new Vision Statement. I know, some of you are thinking blah, blah, blah regarding a Vision Statement, however this is our guiding star and foundation on which all decisions are based on. We are excited to strive towards this vision for our community. We firmly believe that Dobson Ranch has “classic neighborhood charm” and a “vibrant atmosphere” which we aim to maintain; while reaching towards “making Dobson Ranch the premier community of choice”. Everyday our neighbors impact this vision; thank you to all of you who positively impact your space within Dobson Ranch! Please check out all of the fun events slated for this fall! As you can see that is Septembers’ focus – there is so much happening we wanted to dedicate this addition to all of the events. Pool hours extended through the month of September at La Casita. Please join us for the Golf Tournament October 3; the Clean-up, Shred, and Garage Sale October 10; Fall Break Camp October 12 – 16; Fall Tennis Camp October 12 – 16; Kids Fishing Tournament and Outdoor Expo October 17; and my personal favorite the Fall Festival November 14 – I can taste the chili now. This addition also gives you something to think about for your holiday planning – Winter Wonderland and Breakfast with Santa are included. If you’re like me you’re thinking the holidays, already, but take a second to look at your calendar, the ever popular Breakfast with Santa sells out fast! Happy Fall! Hope to see you all out at our events and hope you enjoy our new magazine format.

Message from the Association Board President By Susan Powers Board President

I called the August 20, 2015 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. It was an excellent meeting, here’s a recap… I gave the President’s Report, reporting that during the July board meeting the board appointed committee chairs and added an ADHOC committee to review the community documents. The ADHOC committee has met three times since then and Committee Chair Frank Mizner reported on their progress later in the August meeting. Also, during July’s meeting Sarah Funtowicz presented the mission and vision statements. The board approved the mission statement and the vision statement was on this meetings’ agenda. If you weren’t at the July meeting the following mission statement was approved: “Our mission is to make Dobson Ranch the best place to live, work and play. We build a strong sense of community, maintain and raise property values and provide quality activities and amenities for all of our members to enjoy.” Executive Director, David Jones gave his Director’s Report, reporting that the Los Altos common area landscaping work approved in July is scheduled for October; banquet furniture replacement will be completed this month; the preschool flooring is finished; and the Ranchers’ Roundup magazine will come out in September. I reported on behalf of the Member Services Committee, the new website is close to completion and should go live by the end of September. Treasurer Stacy Holmstedt, reviewed the financial highlights and variance report. Bob Radisich spoke for the Master Planning Committee. The committee is working on a five year plan; Brook Edge tennis court refurbishing is being reviewed and will be on the September agenda; and Lake 3 inlet pipe is scheduled to be cleaned of debris and sediment. Frank Mizner reported for the ADHOC committee. The committee has reviewed the Bylaws and Architectural Control Committee Guidelines, as well as have worked on proposed Common Area Guidelines. Red lined versions of the revised documents will be presented in October and are proposed to be voted on in November. Frank Mizner reported for the Architectural Committee notating the magnitude of submissions which are being processed and that recent technological changes to the process are saving time and money to the Association. The reworking of the Associations’ vision statement was contemplated and voted on. Two different visions were presented, the second was revised and approved. “Dobson Ranch, one of Arizona’s first planned communities, has a proud and established reputation. With classic neighborhood charm and a vibrant atmosphere, it is a beautiful sustainable community located in the heart of the East Valley. The Dobson Association will continue to lead the way by making Dobson Ranch the premier community of choice.” The following business items were voted on and approved: • Reserve Capital Policy • Facility Rates • Reserve Items Homeowner Nate Caine was recognized for his work on the 2015 survey and presented with the “Dragonfly Award”. A big thank you to Mr. Caine for all of his hard work on the survey, we appreciate it and the generous contribution of time to the Association. The meeting adjourned at 8:37 Board member Frank Mizner presenting pm. the “Dragonfly Award” to Nate Caine Please join us for the next Board of Directors meeting September 17, at 7 pm, at La Casita. New Format

By Craig A. Wilson Water Management Director

Change is all around us. Just look at the new magazine layout of the Ranchers’ Roundup. It should take no time at all to find one’s way through our new Roundup. Last month I reviewed how the Ranch is using Reverse Season Irrigation to conserve water. That savings is substantial as can be seen in the included plot of the amount of water used for irrigation over the past twelve years. The amount of irrigation water consumption for 2015, while a projection based upon last year’s usage does reflect our ongoing savings. What does this plot say about Dobson Ranch? The real message of the graphic says Dobson Ranch cares. We took a look at our water consumption and realized there was room for savings. This plot indicates that when compared to the average of the first 4 years, 63 million gallons less water was used over the last eight year period; more than two full years’ worth of water saved. That also translates into approximately $175,000 in savings on the Ranch utility bills. That savings was not just from turning off an irrigation valve. Rather, new equipment, such as smart controllers operated from a central control station, had to be purchased and installed. New irrigation sprinklers and drip lines were needed to replace old equipment that watered sidewalks and walls. Some irrigated areas were also changed from turf to desert landscape where desert adapted plants thrive with only occasional drip irrigation. Perhaps 20% of the area in turf has been changed to desert landscape. Turf is for areas where we like to play and exercise. Otherwise, the landscape should be adapted to our desert climate. We have paid the price and now we are reaping the rewards showing water is abundant for those who use it wisely.

Green Thumb Awards

Green grass, xeriscape, desert landscape or a mixture of everything… it’s always great to see pride of ownership no matter how you landscape! There are MANY homes in the neighborhood that help keep Dobson Ranch a beautiful place to live! Here is just one example this month at 2119 S Longmore. The focal point in this clean landscape design is a large stunning cactus known as Peruvian Torch, or Cactus Hedge. This cactus is relatively fast growing and will bloom in the spring. Next to it is a lovely Spanish Dagger, but be careful, it can be sharp! Thanks to all the green thumbs out there! There are so many impressive and well-manicured yards in Dobson Ranch that it’s hard to pick each month. If you would like your yard or a neighbor’s yard featured as a Green Thumb winner, just contact me at 480-831-8314 or email jloftus@dobsonranchhoa.com.

First Day of School!

I’m back! School has been back in session, too. This year is going to be great. I’m adding more nature into our play, more ways to tinker and definitely more messy art! I find myself using more items that you won’t find in a school catalog and more items that are used in our everyday lives. Kids love to sort things. Why not put out a pile of different things (keys, nuts/bolts, erasers, corks, caps, coins) and a few bowls. They will figure out the rest. Another fun thing to do with your children is to paint with different things. Set out paint in shallow dishes and add items from around the house. Let them have at it!

The first day of preschool went smoothly as the 2015-2016 La Casita preschool classes commenced. Under the direction of Ms Jessi, the preschool instructor, everyone started out with smiles! Preschool group Monday morning

Time: 8:15 am to 9:15 am Cost: $7 drop in or $40 resident only for a 7-use punch card. You can attend either yoga class offered with your punch card. Punch card expires two months from your purchase date. Zumba Instructor: Karen When: Tuesdays Where: La Casita Recreation Center Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Cost: $7 drop in rate, $30 resident only for a 5-use punch card (card expires 2 months from date) This is a fusion of Latin and International music that incorporates a variety of dance styles such as salsa, cumbia , bellydance and reggaton. This class combines high energy and motivating music to help you burn fat and tone your body. Even if you have never danced before, you will have a blast, because the routines are fun and easy to do. So what are you waiting for? Join the Party and try Zumba today. Aqua Zumba Instructor: Karen When: Thursdays (class extended to 9/24) Where: La Casita Recreation Center Pool Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Cost: $7 drop in rate, $30 resident only for a 5-use punch card (expires 9/24/15) Come out and try this awesome class before we break until next summer! Aqua Zumba keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party going in the pool. Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua Zumba class so you can really let loose. Water creates natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your muscles. Fitness in the Park Code: 5100 Instructor: Nancy When: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 6 am – 6:45 am Tuesday and Thursday 6 pm – 6:45 pm Where: Laguna Park Cost: $10 residents, $15 non-residents RSVP: Contact the instructor with questions prior to class at 602-703-7822 or at nancy@magillfitness.com *BUY 6 sessions (buy 5 get 1 free) & 12 sessions (buy 10 get 2 Free)* Your 1st class is FREE!!! By Dick Krouse President

I know I keep talking about the weather, but during the summer, it is a hot topic. On August 14 we set a new record for this date with a temperature of 117 degrees. This wasn’t the highest temperature for us,that occurred on June 26, 1990 with a temperature of 122 degrees. Many of you may remember it was so hot the planes could not fly at Sky Harbor. Let’s hope we have reached the high point for this summer and temps start going down. Marilyn and I traveled to Hawaii Aug. 5 and we expected to have cooler weather. Well we did, it was only 89-90 degrees, but the humidity was pretty high making it just as uncomfortable. We were glad to get home to our drier climate. Being sticky all the time is no fun. We rented a convertible which helped with the wind blowing in our hair and feeling cooler. Being a sports car, it was very difficult to get in and out with the top up, so I had to get in first and put the top down. It was worth it. For all you football fans, the NFL started preseason games in August. You probably already know the games don’t mean much, especially after the first series with the starting lineups. After that it is played just to evaluate new players to see who will make the final cut. The Cardinals did look good in the first series, but the rest of the game was not good. I hope they find some good players to back up the starters. Carson Palmer looked especially good. Golf is winding down with the PGA which was played in Kohler WI. Since we lived in Sheboygan for some years, we really enjoyed watching the tournament. That course is not meant for beginners. This has been a very good year for the competition. My new favorite, Jordan Speath, played well but Jason Day from Australia was just too good for Jordan to catch him. Maybe next year. Being a wimp, I am waiting for cooler weather to start playing again. Have a good rest of the summer you all.

Fishing Club By Ed Ricci It seems like we have weathered another summer, although Mother Nature will have a few punches left. The fish seemed to hold up as well in our Dobson Ranch Lakes. Water temperatures are finally below 90 degrees. There has been enough wind to keep our small lakes oxygenated. The fish stock is very healthy. We have been catching fish in various ways. But the windows to catch them are seemingly odd. Sometimes you can get a few at dawn or dusk; sometimes in the middle of the afternoon. Many times you can’t buy a bite. These windows of opportunity to catch fish will broaden as temperatures moderate. The Kid’s Fishing Tournament and Dobson Ranch Outdoor Expo is on October 17 this year at Lake 1- the Los Altos Rec Center location. This is our 4th Annual fishing event. It is going to be the best event ever. We are changing the format this year so that prizes will be issued to the kids on a 15-minute basis. That should keep them interested! As always, we will also have the small kid’s tank filled with bluegill and a few bonus catfish. And the big lake venue for the big kids will be in play. Come on out! 22 SEPTEMBER 2015

A new concept in Kiwanis is directed towards the Young Professional who wishes to give a little time and energy back to the community they so enjoy and live or work within. A Kiwanis club could serve many purposes for Dobson Ranch residents and business people. It’s almost like an extended family who pool their idea resources, trade friendships, identify with youth of the community and provide unique service where needed. Garden Club Let’s talk about the weather. Seriously! A National Weather Service representative will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, October 6 when the Garden Club resumes its monthly meetings at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita. A summary of our climate and where Dobson Ranch falls in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zones, ideas on how to minimize damage to gardens and landscaping from monsoon storms and freezes and the locations of rain gauges in the vicinity of Dobson Ranch that can be accessed online are topics Marvin Percha will address. Percha grew up in northwest Mesa, graduated from Penn State with a BS in earth sciences/meteorology emphasis. He has been working in the meteorology career field for more than 25 years. He has been employed by the National Weather Service since 200l. The weather impacts us all---not just gardeners. The meeting is open to all Ranch residents and their guests. Come hear this interesting program and have your weather questions ready. You can also learn details about the Weather Service Spotter Program, which you may want to join. See you on October 6 at 7:00 p.m.. Bring your umbrella! (Just kidding.)

From the Dobson Ranch Golf Course By Brian Herring Head Golf Professional, Dobson Ranch Golf Course

We write to you today of the passing of our good friend and colleague James “Lefty” Gentry. Lefty left us peacefully on Saturday August 8th. Our sincere condolences go out to his family. Always the gentleman, Lefty was respected by many, and for many of us Lefty was Dobson Ranch. From a PGA Teaching Golf Professional, PGA Head Pro, mentor, and in the end proprietor of both the Pro Shop and Dobson’s Restaurant, Lefty was part of the fabric of Dobson Ranch for 30 years. To say that he will be missed is an immeasurable understatement.

Mesa Ranked Best Big City in the Southwest

In the Community

Money.com, owned by Time, Inc., released the Best Places to Live 2015 ranking with Mesa being named the Best Big City in the Southwest. Mesa joins Pittsburgh, Tampa, Denver and Omaha in the top 5 best places to live for cities with more than 300,000 residents. The popular financial website reviewed 63 urban centers looking at the job market, affordable housing, and factors such as accessibility to health care, culture and open space. They also gave extra points for low crime and strong public schools in selecting the top city in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and West. The online story’s subtitle reads, “Great schools (and great golf) create the newest Arizona star.” The article continues, “There are bigger cities in Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson) and bigger golf meccas too (Scottsdale). Mesa can hold its own in both categories, and it beats them all in one key way—it’s a great, affordable city for raising a family.” The article cited “the Mesa area is great for hikers, cyclists, horseback riders and kayakers looking to explore. Within the city limits, residents can also enjoy Mesa’s unique series of urban fishing lakes…as well as over 200 golf courses nearby.” Also, ranked in the top 5 were Anaheim, Colorado Springs, Minneapolis and Anchorage.

Mesa Launches New Reporting App

The City of Mesa has launched a new mobile app called Mesa CityLink that will make it easier for citizens to generate service requests and communicate with city staff. The app is currently available for people to use in reporting graffiti, but this is just the beginning for Mesa CityLink. Additional reporting features will be added in the next 30 days to include the ability to report traffic sign issues, potholes, concerns about street conditions, and other transportation-related functions. Other City of Mesa departments will also add reporting features to the app in the near future. “Our overall goal is to increase citizen engagement and to make it easier for people to report issues,” said Lenny Hulme, Director of the Mesa Transportation Department. “The app has the ability to provide status notifications back to the user, plus it will streamline our processes by automatically generating service requests that are forwarded to field staff.” Mesa CityLink is now available for iPads, smartphones, and other mobile devices. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store for free. Mobile downloads for Windows and Blackberry devices are in development. Prior to downloading the new app, users should delete the old graffiti reporting app “MyMesaAz”. For more information about graffiti removal in the City of Mesa, visit www.mesaaz.gov/transportation. 26 SEPTEMBER 2015

Construction on Guadalupe Road Traffic is down to one lane on Guadalupe Road for a while so SRP can bury lines and do some upgrades. It may be inconvenient for now, but when it is all finished there will be beautiful landscape, in place of the orange fencing, that will enhance that area.
