About ABCI
The Association of Business Communicators of India (ABCI) was formed in 1956 with an aim to promote excellence in Business Communications. The Association is the apex body of professionals in business communications, it was originally called the Indian Association of Industrial Editors. ABCI builds the Business Communications profession and the public relations profession in three core areas Advancing the Profession, Strengthening the Society and Establishing Global Leadership . Its nearly 1200 members represent business and Industry, technology, counseling firms, government, associations and hospitals, schools for communications, professional services firms and non-profit organizations. ABCI`s Annual Awards Nite is the most prestigious function in the country in the Business Communicators fraternity. ABCI is the First Professional Body in India to organize 50 Annual Awards Nites, one each in a year since 1960. It is a mark of Prestige to get an ABCI Award, which is considered an ``Oscar of Indian Communications Industry``. The Golden Jubilee Annual Awards was held on 11th November 2010 at Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba, Mumbai. Every year, the entries get better and better. This year ABCI received 895 entries which is all time high in 32 categories and more than 98 companies have participated. ABCI also conducted one and half day ComFest-10 on the subject of ``The Communicator as Change Leader`` on 10th and 11th November at Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba, Mumbai, where Galaxy of Speakers, both from National & International level like Mr. Sam Pitroda, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Dr. Dinesh Keskar, Mr. Gerson Da`Cunha, Mr. P M Sinha, Mr. Roger Pereira, Mr Jitender Bhargava, Mr. Kumar Ketkar, Mr. Manzer Husain, Prof. D Uday Kumar, Mr. Sachin Talwar, Mr. Uday Salunkhe, Dr. Mathew Hibberd and Mr. Sanjay Choudhry spoke on various topics at the invitation of ABCI. Mr. Gopalakrishnan, ED- Tata Sons Limited was Chief Guest and Key Note Speakers for the Comfest-10. On Golden jubilee year ABCI felicitate Mr. Gerson Da`Cunha, Mr. Sam Pitroda and Mr. Vasant Sathe with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Mr. S. Ramadorai, Vice Chairman TCS was the Chief Guest and Mr. Thomas Mathew, MD, LIC was Guest of Honour for the Awards Nite.

I don't think I can get away by saying that in the company of so many experts in Business Communications, I am left speechless. My good friend Roger would be most upset so here I am ‌. Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to share a secret with you. As a young engineer in TCS I found myself with a real tough boss in Mr FC Kohli. As you may know he had a stern personality, sharp mind and a tongue to match it. You had to think twice before you disagreed with him and in any case there was little chance that you could match him in a verbal duel. I could either just be a yes man or find a way around the problem. So I began writing memo's to him. I labored over finding the right words and hitting the right tone, these memos Mr. S. RAMADORAI, Vice Chairman TCS Limited became my strongest vehicle for putting forth my ideas , they helped me build a relationship with him that lasts today. So in a way; were it not for the communication skills I honed at that time, perhaps I would not be here today. With the super specializations of job profiles, today people work in teams where different individuals bring in complementary skills. The efficiency and productivity of such teams is directly proportional to how well they communicate especially since. sometimes these team members may not be in the same city or country. My favorite example if that of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner which required constant collaboration among nearly 6,000 engineers around the world. It was built by over 48 different International teams across locations from Japan to Germany to Washington, many of whom who never actually ever met. Imagine the precision of communication both business and technical that this called for. In today's media ruled environment, your communication with the external world can make or break your brand. Communications plays an important role in shaping the perceptions of our target audiences, which is of crucial importance in the demanding and competitive markets of today. Infact I feel that business communication should form a critical part of college education in India, very often it is the lack of these skills that stand between a person and the job. Perhaps ABCI can initiate a student outreach program as part of their efforts. I think that the ABCI is doing an excellent job by getting communicators together on a single platform, and by organizing this mega event to recognize and reward outstanding talent in this field. To have been organizing an event of this nature, uninterrupted for fifty years, is no mean achievement. I would say that, corporate communicators deserve greater recognition than is generally accorded to them, but I am sure you feel rewarded in the responses to your work. The corporate communicator is a backstage man or woman, silently scripting the success stories of his or her craft, and the audience applauds not him or her, but his or her work which may be through the power of words, or design, or a film, or even a web-page. I would like to congratulate every award winner here, there are others who will look up to you and aspire for similar recognition. So tonight is your night, thanks to the untiring efforts of the ABCI, the spotlight is on you. On behalf of my wife and I, thank you once again for inviting me.

It gives me a great pleasure that ABCI's th ComFest 10 & the 50 Annual Awards Nite took place in fanfare in November, 2010, wherein the Galaxy of Speakers including Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan, Mr. Sam Pitroda, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Dr. Dinesh Keskar, Mr. P. M. Sinha, Mr. Gerson Da'Cunha, Mr. Roger Pereira, Mr. Jitender Bhargava, Mr. Kumar Ketkar, Mr. Manzer Hussain, Dr. Uday Salunke, Prof. D. Udaya Kumar, Dr. Mathew Hibberd, Mr. Sanjay Choudhry truly raised the bar of ComFest10. In the evening wherein we had Mr. S. Ramadorai, Vice Chairman, TCS was the Mr. YOGESH JOSHI, President ABCI Chief Guest & Mr. Thmas Mathew, MD, LIC, was Guest of Honour to grace the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Awards Nite. ABCI is perhaps the only Professional Body in India to have organized 50 Awards Nites one each in the last 50 years. We have received 892 nominations from 96 companies participating as against nominations last year. ABCI will soon cross a mark of 1000 nominations. However, what is most important of this year was the qualitative increase in the nominations received along with the quantum leap. ABCI is also one of the few Professional Bodies who have survived for more than 54 years and well ride over the tide of rough weather that it has faced in its 54 years journey. Due credit needs to be given to all Past Presidents who have run the association in difficult days. I am making a mention of this in light of the fact that some of the companies who have won the magazine of the year, the most coveted award of ABCI are not been functional today. They are closed down, taken over or merged with some other bigger companies. It is time that ABCI should now look for new horizons and widens its wings to mark its presence pan India. It is, therefore, decided that ABCI will soon launch chapters in cities like Hyderabad, New Delhi to begin with and will soon be followed by Kolkata and a few other cities. ABCI should also look at the Global Skies as it is the right time to take off at the International level with nation going global. This will help ABCI in getting more & more professional knowledge and introducing best practices in the profession of Business Communications. Interaction in between Industry & Academicians is need of the hour to shape-up future of the students entering into this profession. ABCI is taking up steps to bring them on one platform. The Golden Jubilee Celebrations took ABCI took the association at undoubtedly the most prominent professional body for communications professionals in India. Let us make it a world renowned professional body in a decade thus, transform it as the Association of Business Communicators International when it will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Annual Awards.

The session was chaired by Mr. Sanjay Choudhary, Chief Corporate Affairs & Communications, Tata Steel. Dr. Matthew Hibbard, Director, Dept of Film, Media and Journalism, University of Sterling, Scotland, UK offered an interesting and thought provoking presentation on definitions of leadership and the role of education in creating leaders withgreat communication skills. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Director, Wellingkar Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai spoke at length about methodologies of teaching communications and leadership competencies required from communication graduates.

Member National Advisory Council, GOI gave a stirring and heartfelt talk on India's past and future as a world power especially in terms of financial strengths, economic and social development and the challenges facing India in the future. Mr.Yogesh Joshi, President, ABCI, introduced him as a 'Great Orator' and he did not disappoint the gathered guests. His talk was eloquent, passionate and very informative.

Dr. Dinesh Keskar, President Boeing India and VP of Boeing International Trading, delibrated Why many International brands are trying to emerge on the Indian scene as they feel India as a country is emerging as a Global Leader. He went on to tell the August gathering why Boeing International is starting a factory at Nagpur and no other country in Asia as it feels India is emerging.
