Computer Tutorials. By Alan Paul Alan Paul, who is a member of Ashfield and Ravenshead U3As, has very kindly written an on-line tutorial on WORD 2010. These tutorials were meant as follow-up guides to the computer group activities at Ravenshead, but people in some other U3A’s are keen to use them as stand-alone guides. This seems to be meeting a need with the U3A groups. The library guide will be the same for any Notts. Library.. These tutorials are part of the Ravenshead U3A web site but the following web-address gives direct access to the computer group page. http://u3asitec.org.uk/live/code/u3asite.php?site=389&page=14813 We thank Alan wholeheartedly for the time and effort he has put into this web-site, - have a look, it could be just what you are looking for.

Another superb event organised for our members to enjoy. More details later. Please put the date in you diaries as the band and venue have been booked.

Christmas Lunch – to be organised by Pam Sapey.

A hot lunch provided by outside caterers. Please make a note in your diary that the party will take place on Thursday 19 December at lunch time in the Ashwood Centre (time to be agreed). Tickets will be on sale from September for a hot buffet at £8.50 each.

New Year’s Eve. A Ceilidh with the “Knitter’s Jig” ceilidh band. This will be held at the Mansfield Baptist Church Centre. Please put this in your diaries. Watch this space for more details later. No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.

Family History visit: There will be no meeting in July, instead we are going to visit Lakeside Western gallery (University of Nottingham campus) to see an exhibition entitled "Nottinghamshire's people, ancestral stories from the archives" The date will be 11th July, the exhibition is free but we will need to arrange a few cars to take people there, apparently there is also a restaurant so we may have a meal as well! The intention is to visit in the morning setting off from Kirkby around 10.00am, returning just after lunch but final details have yet to be arranged. Please let me know if you would like to go and also if you are willing to drive, We welcome new members; we meet on the second Thursday of each month in the upstairs room at Kirkby library at 1pm – 3pm. We pay as required for the hire of the room, usually about £5 per “term”. Please contact Trish Tootell 01623 793447

International Dining for 2013 FRIDAY 28th June – not our usual Tuesday or Wednesday, - at The Danube, Castle Gate, Newark (mid -European food). There will be an optional river trip on the Trent in the late afternoon (just to add to the river theme), weather permitting. The times of the trips are 3pm and 4.30pm so the last one might best as it returns at 6.00pm to the Castle mooring and the restaurant is close by.

During May 21 members Walking Group “A” had an adventurous holiday in Turkey. Each day we trekked through the glorious mountain scenery on the turquoise coast, including sections of the world famous Lycian Way. Those who ventured up the mountain to the Roman City of Cadianda were entertained in the amphitheatre by David Riley who sang a chorus from the Messiah – a magical moment! Two of the group experienced the ultimate in thrill-seeking as they paraglided off Mount Babadag, 6550 ft high. Another highlight for several members of the group was a 2-day trip to Ephesus. On our day of rest we chartered a boat and had a wonderful day sailing round the 12 islands in Fethiye bay where we swam in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean surrounded by snowcapped mountains. We returned with wonderful memories of fantastic scenery, beautiful springtime flora, lovely weather, delicious food and the warm hospitality of the Turkish people. Julia and David Porter 3

Tai Chi Please note that this group is now suspended. We will not meet again due to lack of support from some of the group members. The group cannot continue unless there is a firm commitment from the members to attend, as there are costs to meet and my time is wasted if few members attend. I have taken this decision reluctantly, as some members are very loyal, and attend regularly. Jill Pullan

Lack of commitment is the reason most groups fail, and members should ensure they are able to attend most of the interest group meetings they commit to, before adding their name to the list of members. We acknowledge that holidays and illness sometimes occur. 4

SEVILLE:………Holiday…..May….2013 A group of 19 U3A wine aficionados and flamenco wannabes had a wonderful 5 days staying at the Vime Corregidor hotel in central Seville. Arrived at midday to very welcome 34c sunshine we had a swift and smooth transfer to the Vime Hotel in central Seville. After a brief siesta and cold sangria we walked into the centre to see the Real Alcázar. This Moorish palace with its stunning architecture was designed by the same architect the Alhambra in Granada. Our first warm and balmy evening was spent in the nearby square of Alameda de Hercules, indulging in tapas, fine wine & local beers. Day.2;---Ronda.:Temperature:30.c Our private coach arrived to take us on a full day to Ronda - The town is divided into two halves by a spectacular gorge, and was originally linked by a small bridge at the lowest part. This was built by the Moors and Arabs in the 6th century, the Arab baths and original city fortifications are mostly intact. A new bridge spanning the highest part of the gorge was built in the last century. This new bridge is now the iconic image of Ronda and features on all postcards. The day was spent exploring the town - it's ancient paths and history, as well as sampling the many gastronomic delights of local bars! The evening was spent once again sitting outside enjoying local food and wine. Day3.--- Temperature:33c The group split up as we all wanted to do different things Our small group of 5 enjoyed the followingHorse and trap ride around the city and Santa Cruz area, found a lovely quite restaurant overlooking the river in the Triana area. Chartered a small (7 seater) pleasure cruiser, with our very own capitano we enjoyed an hours leisurely cruise along the river. Visited the amazing gothic cathedral and climbed the Giralda tower over -looking the city. To complete this series of pleasant interludes we indulged in an extravagant amount of exotic ice-creams , followed by a small glass of alcoholic beverage to enable us walk back to the hotel. A late siesta and then a group get together with a gastronomic feast of typical Sevillian food. food - lots of lively conversation well into the early hours! Day 4. Temperature a staggering 38c! Private coach to Cordoba - once the ancient capital of Spain, built by the Roman General Claudio Marcelo in 164 BC, and the birthplace of Seneca. Our visit coincided with opening of the old city gardens, patios terrazzas ( private homes) in the old Jewish district not normally on view to the public. Unfortunately for us this annual event is very popular and place was heaving with visitors. However we made the best of it and meandered through the narrow winding streets viewing the most delightful and intimate gardens, patios - terrazzas. A myriad of shady squares with inviting tapas provided a welcome relief from the heat and the opportunity to share the day with each other. Some of the group visited the magnificent Mesquite palace. The evening was spent back in Seville at the Plaza de Hercules - our group once again enjoying tapas, wine, laughter, wine, more tapas, ice cream, more wine, giggling .... 'can we have the bill please?' Day 5. --Temperature 31c. A final leisurely day we walked over the river to the Triana district in the quieter part of Seville, home to the original Flamenco dance. We visited the Spanish Inquisition museum, housed in the original building on the river side. Our final evening together was spent enjoying sangria on the hotel terrazza. - There are pictures available our the Ashfield web-site. Thank you to all from Hucknall, Sutton, Ashfield u3a for your most excellent company. Caroline Rhodes

Here are the Singing for Fun dates for the rest of the year. Please note that the October meeting has been moved to 29th. Obituary Cynthia Driscoll died 30th May, 2013, after a short illness. Cynthia was the group leader for the line-dancing group and also organised the long-alley skittles with Mary Carlton. She was a group member of Singing for Fun, Am-Dram, Card- Craft, Movement-to-Music, Tai Chi, Board Games and Canasta. She was a founder member of Ashfield U3A. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and colleagues.

This will be of great help to members of your various groups – this includes changes of content, dates and venues -- Also, please inform Ron Britton for the web-site Interest Group Meetings:- If you wish to join any interest group, please telephone the group leader first to ensure there is a vacancy in that group. All relevant details can be obtained from the group leader, including where the walking group intend to meet and which walk they will do, or which book the reading group is reading, which garden the horticulture group is visiting etc. Group leaders’ names and contact details are on pages 8-9 of the newsletter, and also on the web-site.
