A short history on how all started Our Story.

Hello, my name is Nicoleta-Claudia Toma and I started listening to my heart in 2015, writing the story “Bookmark In Your Book” in the heart of Transylvania, the place where I was born and live. This story continues here at Romanian Fairy Tales® where we draw inspiration from the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the past, while incorporating the convenience and functionality of present days.

Together with my mother and my mother-in-law I interpret according to my personal vision and try to preserve the essence of Romanian symbols enriched with Saxon and Hungarian influences, through the form of an elegant hand stitched bookmark, for whoever chooses to put it in their book. I felt that I could bring these symbols back to our daily lives in various forms. So together with my husband, Csiszar Barna, we started to make wooden and ceramic decorative objects. You will find my husband passion for carpentry materialized here at Romanian Fairy Tales® and I invite you to find it unfolding in the objects he creates.

Romanian Fairy Tales ® represents family. We are two generations creating in Transylvania using various techniques passed down from our ancestors. We share a desire to promote a beautiful, authentic, and natureoriented lifestyle. Our products are intended for consumers who share our values. Everything we create is done by hand and inspired by nature. Whether it’s a hand-stitched bookmark, a decorative object, or a piece of clothing, elements from nature are present in both the materials we use and the message we want to convey through our art.

We create timeless and unique accessories from natural materials that bring joy into our homes and lives, such as wood, hemp, raffia, cellulose, and ceramics. We respect nature and do not waste any of the materials we take from it. Therefore, we make our own labels, packaging, and even products from any leftover paper, cardboard, wood.

We hope that our products will inspire you to discover the beauty and richness of Romanian culture and nature.

Hemp.

Textile that withstand generations of constant use

These pillows are made of heavy textured hemp that was hand-woven in Transylvania and dates back to the early 1900’s. Hemp was grown, processed and later woven by hand in small Transylvanian farms and then used as sacks to bring flour from the mill. Each sack had a distinctive pattern of strips showing which farm or family it belonged to. This unique markings ensured that the flour sack reached the rightful owner. These textiles are, by their nature ecological! They were made from natural fiber that did not require pesticides or chemicals to grow. We recycle these textiles today to show the mastery of past generations! They preserve the traditional skills and craftsmanship of the Transylvanian people who created them.

Another feature that makes these textiles environmentally friendly is their durability. They have been designed to withstand generations of constant use and will have an extremely long life. Their timeless beauty and extraordinary quality make these textiles the perfect choice for any home and an ecological choice. They have a rustic charm and a cozy feel that will enhance any decor. These sustainable bags are made from hemp that was hand-woven in Transylvania over a century ago. A unique piece of history, as it is recycled from old mill sacks that were used to transport grains and seeds in the early 1900s.

The hemp we used to make our wallets is recycled from old mill sacks that dates back to the early 1900s. These sacks were used to transport grains and seeds, and now they show the mastery and craftsmanship of past generations.

Artisanal production of accessories in vintage fabric involves handwork and it is not compatible with the fast production. This is called ‘slow design’ and it focuses on a product which is timeless, independent from seasons and trends, and therefore sustainable.

Paper represents a versatile and wonderful resource, that can be easly recycled and it is fully biodegradable.

We create our beautiful necklaces and earrings using ancient crochet techniques and paper yarn that is extremely thin.

We use paper yarn to crochet delicate and intricate patterns that resemble sea foam, lace, or flowers.

We don’t like to throw away and instead, we utilize any leftover pieces of wood.

As a result, we have created the “Remember Sustainability” little houses from reclaimed wood, copper pipes, and paper.

Vase.

Tray. A timeless wooden decor piece.

This tray is hand made of recovered wood.

The old terracotta tiles that can still be found on the stoves in traditional Transylvanian houses serve as a model for the small painted wooden pieces.

Each piece of wood is selected by hand, cut and sanded. All edges are kept as smooth as possible, but the wood can break when cut, so there may be uneven edges.

Each piece of wood accepts the color differently, and the knots add a plus of the desired rustic style.

Preserving nature in a frame.

Plants borrow their perfect details so that we can transport you to the season in which they were harvested.

We create limited edition plates, with a maximum of three pieces each. This way, as many plants as possible will have the chance to be forever cherished through this technique. Isn’t nature wonderful?

The sizes of the plates vary depending on the plants we personally gather.

We sew by hand motifs, patterns and colors inspired by nature from different areas of Transylvania.

Our bookmarks are accompanied by a story about the area where the patterns were collected, what natural element inspired them and how that element is part of people’s lives.

We want to bring to light the connection of local communities to landscape through art and culture.

So far we managed to find more than 100 different models, which are appreciated by thousands of customers all over the world.
