A short history on how all started Our Story.

Hello, my name is Nicoleta-Claudia Toma and I started listening to my heart in 2015, writing the story “Bookmark In Your Book” in the heart of Transylvania, the place where I was born and live. This great story continues even today, here at Romanian Fairy Tales®. Together with my mother, Ecaterina Toma and my mother-in-law, Judit Csiszar, I interpret according to my personal vision and preserve the essence of traditional Romanian motifs through the form of an elegant bookmark, for whoever chooses to put it in their book.

Romanian Fairy Tales® began to take shape from the need to perfect myself in other crafts besides sewing. I was fascinated by how universal symbols were used in our traditional ornamentation, how they were adapted from one area to another, enriched with various influences and combined so beautifully in our pure Romanian style.

I felt that I could bring these symbols back to our daily lives in various forms. So, together with my husband, Csiszar Barna, we started to make ceramic and wooden decorative objects bearing the seal of the Transylvanian mix, as I like to call it, due to the Hungarian and Saxon influences that complement and enrich the specifics of the area where we were born and live. You will find my husband’s passion for lighting and carpentry materialized here at Romanian Fairy Tales® and I invite you to find it enlivened in the objects he creates.

We aim to create positive change by handcrafting beautiful and unique accessories from materials that are friendly to the environment and to us humans, chosen from local ecological and sustainable sources, that bring joy to the homes and lives of our customers such as: reclaimed wood, flax, hemp, cattail, raffia, cellulose.

All Romanian Fairy Tales® products are handmade, we invest in each of them the most precious resource: Time. A small investment compared to what the Romanian tradition wins, namely: Life.

Heavy textured hemp that was hand-woven in Transylvania and dates back to the early 1900s.

Hemp was grown, processed and later woven by hand in small Transylvanian farms and then used as sacks to bring flour from the mill.

Each sack had a distinctive pattern of strips showing which farm or family it belonged to.This unique markings ensured that the flour sack reached the rightful owner.

These textiles are, by their nature, ecological. They are recycled today to show the mastery of past generations. Another feature that makes them environmentally friendly is their durability. They have been designed to withstand generations of constant use and will have an extremely long life. Cattail weaving represents an old and traditional practice all across Romania allowing people to create both usefull and decorative objects using this eco friendly and versatile material.

Classic hand-stitched bookmark

Our bookmarks are intended to be a mirror of our local culture.

On our bookmarks we sew motifs, patterns and colors inspired by nature from different areas Transylvania.

Our bookmarks are also accompanied by a story about the area where the models were collected, what natural element inspired them and how that element it is part of the lives of people living in that area, connecting local communities to landscape through art and culture.

Ceramic.

Ceramic has been used by humans from our early days to present. It has been shaped as decorative items, kitchenware and other day to day objects. In our quest to replace plastic we have chose this versatile material to create diferent decorative objects for your home.

Ceramic tile.

Old Transylvania traditional motif

The ceramic tile is highlighted by a handmade wooden frame recovered and therefore it bears the perfect sign of the imperfection that we hope you will appreciate as much as we appreciate it.

The models we decorated the ceramic tile with are picked from the terracotta tiles of the stoves that warmed the old Transylvanian houses.

Each ceramic tile is made, polished and decorated by hand. Delivery of this article takes 5 business days.
