FACILITIES The men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and compete at The University of Alabama Tennis Stadium, located adjacent to Rhoads Stadium on 5th Ave. East. The 12-court facility includes team locker rooms, coaches’ offices, a training room and team meeting room. The teams also have a new six-court indoor building, the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility, which was dedicated in April, 2012. UA VIDEO FEEDS/TELEVISION The University of Alabama, through the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN), offers an FTP site that provide up-to-date interviews with coaches and athletes, taped video highlights and narrated tape packages from September through May. THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE The Southeastern Conference women’s tennis programs continue to be among the nation’s leaders on the collegiate hard court. On the women’s side, 12 teams earned bids to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships with Vanderbilt taking the NCAA title. Vanderbilt won it’s first tennis championship in school history after defeating UCLA 4-2. It was Vanderbilt’s third all-time trip to the Final Four and first in the title match since 2001.
BY THE NUMBERS In the singles tournament, Florida’s Josie Kuhlman advanced to the semifinals. While in doubles, Alabama’s Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe dominated the field to take the title for the second consecutive year. A total of 14 SEC players were awarded ITA All-America honors for the 2015 season to give the SEC totals at 139 singles and 164 double honors since 1990.

THE
On Your Campus... Alabama president dr. Stuart R. bell Dr. Stuart R. Bell became the 29th president of The University of Alabama on July 15, 2015. Founded in 1831, the University is the state’s flagship and a student-centered, comprehensive research university. Dr. Bell has broad administrative experience and is a nearly 30-year veteran of higher education. He previously served at UA for 16 years where he founded and directed an interdisciplinary research center. “I certainly look forward to leading this university as its next president and working alongside the many men and women who have made it a great university today and who will also make it a great university in the future,” Bell said on the day he was named UA president. “It’s just great to be here in Tuscaloosa, and it’s great to be in Alabama and to, once again, be able to say Roll Tide!” Immediately prior to becoming UA’s president, Dr. Bell was executive vice president and provost at Louisiana State University. During Dr. Bell’s tenure there and earlier at the University of Kansas, where he served as dean of its College of Engineering, those institutions opened new facilities, and student recruitment, retention and success were emphasized. First joining UA in 1986 as an assistant professor in the UA College of Engineering’s department of mechanical engineering, Dr. Bell was named department head nine years later. With research interest in combustion engines, Dr. Bell has expertise in alternative fuels for engines, innovative engine designs and modeling of engine and engine processes. He directed UA’s Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies. Dr. Bell was awarded the Society of Automotive Engineers’ Ralph Teetor Award for Outstanding Contributions to Research and Teaching in 1988. He was presented the T. Morris Hackney Faculty Leadership Award for the UA College of Engineering in 2001, and, in 2005, he received the Richard S. Woodbury Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A native of Abilene, Texas, Dr. Bell earned a nuclear engineering degree from Texas A&M University in 1979. He earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M in 1981 and 1986, respectively. He and his wife, Susan, have three adult children, Stuart, Stacy and Stephen.

Enrollment at The University of Alabama reached a record high of 37,100 for fall 2015. The entering freshman class, at 7,211 students, was the largest and best qualified in UA history. More than 36 percent freshmen scored 30 or higher on the ACT, placing them in the top five percent of students taking the ACT.

The University of Alabama is a leader among public universities nationwide in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars with more than 600 currently enrolled.
•
Ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade, UA ranked 38th among public universities in the 2015 rankings. UA’s latest college rankings include:

The School of Law is ranked 22nd among all law schools in the nation, spring 2015.

The School of Library and Information Studies is ranked 18th nationally in the latest rankings for library schools, spring 2013.

University of Alabama students continue to win prestigious national awards. Forty-five UA students have been named Goldwater Scholars, including four in 2015. The University of Alabama has produced a total of 15 Rhodes Scholars, 14 Truman Scholars, 30 Hollings Scholars and six Boren Scholars.

Twenty-eight UA faculty have received NSF CAREER Awards, the nation’s most prestigious recognition of top-performing young scientists, in disciplines ranging from nanoscience and engineering to biological sciences.

Dr. Samantha Hansen, UA assistant professor of geological sciences, is one of many faculty recognized nationally for research. Hansen is one of 102 scientists who received the 2014 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Fourteen University of Alabama graduates have accepted Fulbright awards to study and teach abroad during 2015-2016. Three will be based in Spain and two each in Brazil, Malaysia and Turkey. Others will be in Czech Republic, Cyprus, France, Peru and South Korea.

U.S. News and World Report ranks The University of Alabama’s Manderson Online Business Master’s programs 12th in the nation, up from 75th last year. The rankings are based on level of accreditation, faculty credentials, admissions selectivity, reputation for excellence among peer institutions and academic and career support services offered to students.

Public Accounting Report’s 2014 rankings place UA’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy’s undergraduate and master’s programs eighth in the nation and the doctoral program 12th.
•
PRWeek Magazine has recognized the public relations program in The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences as one of the top five programs in the nation six times.

BILL BATTLE DIRECT O R O F AT H L ET IC S
William R. “Bill” Battle is in his third year as Director of Athletics at The University of Alabama. Battle took over the job on Friday, March 22, 2013, succeeding Mal Moore who had held the position since November, 1999. Battle joined the Crimson Tide after a career as a college football coach and entrepreneur that was consistently hallmarked by innovation and foresight. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Battle attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship and enjoyed a successful playing career as a three-year starter at end for the Crimson Tide under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1960-62. Battle was a member of Bryant’s first national championship team at Alabama in 1961. Generally regarded as the team’s best end throughout his playing career, Battle came to Tuscaloosa after starring in three sports at Birmingham’s West End High School. An excellent student, Battle earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology (minor in Psychology) from The University of Alabama in 1963 and a master’s degree in Education from The University of Oklahoma in 1964. He was an Academic All-SEC selection as a senior in 1962 and was selected to play in the Senior Bowl all-star game in Mobile, Ala., in January of 1963. He was named first team tight end and second team defensive end on The University of Alabama All Decade Team of the 1960s. Battle entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant at The University of Oklahoma in 1963 under famed head coach Bud Wilkinson. In 1964 and 1965, he served as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy while serving a two-year military tour. In 1966, he moved on to the University
of Tennessee, where he served as an assistant coach under head coach Doug Dickey for four seasons (1966-69) until he was named head coach of the Volunteers in 1970. When he was named head coach, Battle was the youngest head coach in college football at the age of 28. During his seven-year tenure as head coach (1970-76), Battle’s teams went 59-22-2, finished three seasons ranked in the nation’s top 10 among five top-20 finishes and won four out of five bowl games. Battle’s Tennessee teams won 11 games once (1970) and at least 10 games in three different seasons (1970, 1971 and 1972). His first Tennessee team finished the season ranked fourth in both national polls. His 1971 team finished ranked ninth in both national polls and the 1972 Tennessee squad finished ranked eighth by the Associated Press and 11th in the Coaches’ poll. Battle began a career in the private sector after his coaching career ended. He held various positions within Circle S Industries in Selma, Ala., and served as president of two different companies, as well as vice chairman of the Circle S Holding Company Board. During his six years at Circle S, the organization grew from two companies earning $12 million in annual sales to 10 companies earning $60 million. Battle founded The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) in 1981, and served as president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) until 2002. He also served as chairman of the board of Licensing Partners International (LPI), which was created in 2001 to represent the licensing interests of non-collegiate sports properties, as well as corporate and entertainment properties. A 1981 inductee into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Battle was inducted as the first member of the charter class of the National Collegiate Licensing Association Hall of Fame in 2000. He was the recipient of the 2005 Paul W. Bryant Alumni Athlete Award at The University of Alabama and was inducted into the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) Hall of Fame in 2008.
Battle received a National Football Foundation award in December 2008 for Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Football. In June 2010, Bill was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators’ (NACMA) Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He currently serves on the boards of the Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Foundation, The University of Alabama A-Club Educational & Charitable Foundation, the Crimson Tide Foundation, and the National Football Foundation. Battle’s wife, Mary, is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Texas School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She earned a Master of Science in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. For many years Mary worked in the healthcare industry both in the clinical setting and for healthcare corporations that developed and managed physician provider networks including the development of strategically significant relationships with payors and business and industry. Mary currently serves on the Arthritis Foundation National Board of Directors and is the chairperson of the Arthritis Foundation Leadership Council for the Birmingham market. She is also a member of the Volunteer Engagement Task Team for the Arthritis Foundation. In addition, Mary is an inaugural member of the UAB School of Medicine Board of Visitors and is active in fundraising activities for UAB that support research projects targeting more effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The Battles are part of UAB’s Stem Cell Institute Board and are both active in their support of UAB’s Department of Rheumatology. In their leisure time, the Battles enjoy life on their ranch in Georgia. Mary is an avid equestrian while Bill enjoys working on various projects around the ranch.

HEAD COACH JENNY MAINZ The Crimson Tide have been consistently ranked in the ITA’s top-10 rankings each of the past three seasons and continue to play elitelevel tennis in the Southeastern Conference. In 2011, UA finished fourth in the conference and claimed the SEC Western Division title for the regular season. The Tide once again claimed the Western Division title in 2012, this time finishing second overall. For the 2013 season, Alabama was ranked fourth in the conference, but the Crimson Tide continued to build upon its success as the team entered 2014.

“The Capstone” is a nickname for The University of Alabama, but in its literal sense, it means the top stone or high point. For The University of Alabama’s women’s tennis team and head coach Jenny Mainz, it’s a guidepost for a program whose roots are grounded in a philosophy of building a program brickby-brick over time with character, integrity, a strong work ethic, good sportsmanship and teamwork. A Capstone can never be placed on a foundation built on anything less, the way Coach Mainz sees it. Success is not defined by a single match, season, or team—but rather it is the cumulative body of work in the constant pursuit of excellence over time—inside the classroom, on the court, and in the community. “I can’t imagine playing for any other coach in the country,” senior captain Maya Jansen said. “Jenny has created a true culture of winning and continues to put me and all of my teammates in countless positions to succeed.” On the Court In 18 seasons leading the Crimson Tide women’s tennis team, Mainz has taken the program to heights never before seen in the program’s long and rich history. Mainz, the only coach in Alabama history to take the Tide to five consecutive NCAA Championships and 12 overall, has coached 12 teams that have finished in the top 40 in addition to 21 singles players and 15 doubles teams ranked in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls. Over her last five seasons, Mainz has coached the Crimson Tide to some truly great heights. In 2012, her doubles pairing of Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Daines reached the semifinals in doubles. Guarachi also reached the semifinals in singles in that same season. On May 25, 2015, reigning NCAA Doubles Champions, Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe, stamped their names in the collegiate tennis record books, defeating Cal’s Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi by a final score of 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 to become just the third doubles team in the history of NCAA women’s tennis to win back-to-back national titles.

Her 2014 team made history, wrapping up the season as the sixth-ranked squad in the ITA rankings, which is the highest final ranking for the program. Alabama was ranked in the top-10 throughout the year, reaching a No. 2 ranking on May 1, the highest rank in the history of the program. The 2014 Crimson Tide women finished with just one loss in conference play and posted seven 4-0 sweeps throughout the season. But the most noteworthy accomplishment Mainz pulled off was capturing the program’s first Southeastern Conference Championship. With a 4-3, comefrom-behind victory at eighth-ranked Georgia, Alabama clinched at least a part of the 2014 SEC title; that wasn’t enough for the Tide women. Alabama followed that up with a 4-0 sweep of Tennessee to claim the conference title outright on the final day of the season. For a program that was 0-21 her first season to a conference champion, Mainz has surely transformed the women’s tennis program into a perennial power and one of the University’s most consistent teams. In the Classroom As proud as she is of her team’s on-court success, Mainz is equally as proud of their academic success. The Alabama women have impressed in the classroom each year under her tutelage. Most recently, the team earned the highest grade point average by an Alabama women’s team following the conclusion of the 2013-14 season. In the past five seasons, the Tide women have laid claim to 30 ITA Scholar
Athlete Awards, with five apiece coming in the first three campaigns and a program-best seven in 2015. The Crimson Tide’s efforts in the classroom are unmatched as the women continue to lay claim to the conference’s and NCAA’s most prestigious academic awards following each season. In the last five years, at least one member of the UA women’s tennis team has been named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic AllAmerica team, while the Tide has also claimed five consecutive SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards for women’s tennis. Also, during those three seasons, a member of the women’s team has claimed the NCAA Elite 89 Award, an honor that is presented to the studentathlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. “Academic success is imperative. I have always stressed the importance of academics and I always tell my players that no one can ever take your education away from you. I hope to help produce student-athletes who are well equipped to make an impact beyond tennis,” says Mainz. Being named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Team started following the 2010-11 season, when Courtney McLane claimed the honor for the Tide. McLane received the award a second consecutive year following the 2011-12 season, as well. Following McLane’s graduation, Antonia Foehse picked up where McLane left off, winning the award following the 2012-13 season. In 2014, Mary Anne Daines followed her ex-teammates in earning the honor once again for Alabama women’s tennis. Senior captain Emily Zabor earned the honor a season ago.
In the Community In order to build the best possible person, not just athletes, Mainz has placed a focus on community service and giving back to the Tuscaloosa area. Her athletes are not just stars on the court and in the classroom, but they are also champions of the University and make an impact on their community.
In order to help produce such well-rounded young women, Mainz preaches three core values to her players: having a blue-collar work ethic, striving for constant improvement and working together as a team.
Every year, the women’s tennis team makes it a point to take advantage of every opportunity they have to help out those in need in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas. In the past three years, the team has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help build a house for a person in need. The team also takes part annually in the athletic department’s Halloween Extravaganza for local youth, as well as the Project AngelTree event, in which studentathletes help in making sure that children of incarcerated parents are provided presents each December holiday season.
“Jenny provides an unbelievable support system for her student-athletes both on and off the court,” said 2015 SEC Community Service Team member Natalia Maynetto. “Jenny is one of the most genuine people you’ll ever cross paths with and she truly wants what is best for those around her. Her priority to develop and maintain personal relationships with us helps us on the court, in the classroom and in the community.” The Crimson Tide athletes under Mainz have seen a lot of success during their active time as an athlete with the team, but the women don’t stop their studies once their playing days are over. Alabama women have earned three NCAA postgraduate scholarships over the past four seasons. In 2012 , Taylor Lindsey earned the honor for the Crimson Tide. She was followed up by Foehse in 2013 and Daines in 2014. Although much of the successes of any athletic team are seen on the court, Mainz has produced well-rounded athletes that work just as hard away from the sport. Her women continue to exemplify exactly what it means to be a student-athlete at The University of Alabama.
Board of Directors and served as the co-chair of the Division I Women’s Committee for the ITA. Before Leading the Tide Mainz, once ranked in the top 10 nationally in doubles, was a three-year team captain for the University of Houston Cougars and a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection, garnering numerous accolades for her dedication to the game of tennis on the court. Off the court, however, is where she truly shined, earning CoSIDA GTE Academic All-America status and dean’s list honors while also being a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. Mainz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Houston in 1991.

Zabor was also honored by the conference for her academic success, earning the Southeastern Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2015. The same progression the Crimson Tide saw with the CoSIDA/Capital One All-American awards continued on in the conference as well, as Zabor marked the third consecutive member of the Tide to win the award.
For all their hard work on the court and in the community, Mainz and her team received a proclamation from Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox, making September 16, 2014 “University of Alabama Women’s Tennis Day”. The proclamation was given to the team in recognition of all that they have done in the past year, and to make sure that the community takes note of the accomplishments of the Alabama tennis program. Mainz is actively involved in collegiate tennis on the national front, serving on the ITA’s Operating Committee from 2010-15. She also served as the chairperson for the ITA’s South Region for three years and assumed the same role for the newly formed Southern Region in 2010, a position which she still maintains going into this season. Possibly her most prestigious work on the national front came in 2014, when the Alabama coach was a member of the ITA

Former Alabama standout Shelley Godwin begins her first season as assistant coach, returning to her alma mater from Middle Tennessee where she spent the last four seasons as the Blue Raiders head coach. Godwin spent four seasons as a player for current head coach Jenny Mainz from 2005-09. “It’s great to welcome back former UA women’s tennis standout Shelley Godwin to our Alabama family,” said Mainz. “Our Alabama women’s tennis program has taken a giant step forward with Shelley’s commitment to return to her alma mater to coach. Shelley has done a commendable job in her coaching career where she has coached the same way she competed for the Tide -- with a fierce competitive spirit and a genuine love for the game.” Godwin returns to Alabama after spending four seasons at the helm of the Middle Tennessee women’s tennis program. As the head coach of the Blue Raiders, Godwin led the program to four consecutive winning seasons for the first time in over ten years. She coached two nationally ranked singles players, including the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in
2014. She saw her team reach as high as No. 65 in the national rankings in 2014-15, and finished the campaign ranked No. 75 -- the first time the Blue Raiders have finished a season in the national rankings in over ten years. Prior to her stint with the Blue Raiders, Godwin completed two seasons as the assistant head coach at Michigan State, helping the Spartans reach as high as No. 52 in the ITA rankings in 2010-11. “I am incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to be the assistant women’s tennis coach at The University of Alabama,” said Godwin. “It’s an honor to return to my alma mater and have the privilege of giving back to a program and university that has given so much to me.” Off the court, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders shined under Godwin’s leadership. Her team earned numerous ITA All-Academic Team honors, and saw six of its members named ITA Scholar Athletes. In 2014, MT earned the AllAcademic Team award, and two Blue Raiders were tabbed ITA Scholar Athletes. Seven Blue Raiders were named to the 2014 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, while two
earned C-USA Academic Medals. Additionally in 2014, Godwin saw Nayara Moraes garner Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First Team Women’s Tennis honors. Following the 2014-15 campaign, Godwin was awarded the “Making A Difference Award” at the 2015 Raider’s Choice Awards for leading a group of female athletes on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. A Birmingham, Ala., native, she played collegiately at Alabama and finished her career with a combined 88 victories, including 59 in singles action. She received one of the ITA’s highest honors in 2009, as she was tabbed the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award honoree. The award is presented to the women’s tennis player who exhibited outstanding leadership and sportsmanship as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. On the court, she served as the Crimson Tide captain her final three years, and was picked as a member of the Academic All-SEC Team all four seasons. She was a member of the Dean’s List at Alabama since 2007. Godwin also served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative. In her role with SAAC, she was instrumental in coordinating the tennis teams’ community service activities throughout Tuscaloosa. She also attended the Fall 2008 SEC SAAC Conference in Birmingham. She also has served as an instructor at the Alabama Tennis Camps where she provided individual training for high school athletes, fine tuning their game in preparation for tennis at the collegiate level. She assisted in weekly structured practices, while helping to improve the technical skills of each player. “Shelley has been a pillar of our Alabama program since she graduated in 2009,” Mainz added. “She epitomized the consummate student-athlete representing the Tide with character, integrity and class. The future of our program is bright with Shelley’s experience, leadership and passion for the Alabama Crimson Tide.”

Keith Swindoll begins his second stint as the volunteer assistant on Jenny Mainz’ women’s tennis coaching staff in 2015. A familiar face around The Capstone, Swindoll also served as Mainz’ volunteer assistant for six seasons from 1999-05, the longest tenure for a volunteer coach in the SEC at the time. Swindoll began his coaching career as a student assistant for the men’s team in 1981.
“Keith has unselfishly given an insurmountable amount of his time and energy,” said head coach Jenny Mainz. “He contributes a wealth of experience and knowledge to this program. Keith has a special way of getting the most out of the team. He always seems to say the right thing.” Swindoll’s playing career is highlighted by his countless awards and accolades collected over his tenure. He is a former No. 1 player in the men’s 30-and-over division in Alabama, and a six-time Alabama Tennis Professional of the Year. Swindoll is a United States Professional Tennis Association Master Professional, an honor that fewer than 1 percent of tennis
professionals worldwide achieve. Inducted into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame in Feb. 2013, Swindoll was recently named the Alan Henry USPTA Southern Professional of the Year. Swindoll has been the Director of Tennis at the Indian Hills Country Club since 1987. Under his leadership, the country club has been named United States Tennis Association Tennis Facility of the Year in 1989 and 2000. Aside from tennis, Swindoll has developed a passion for charitable work. In 1990, he set a then southern record by playing tennis for 72 hours to raise money for local charities. He hosts “Keith’s Classic” which has raised money for local charities for the past 10 years. In 2011, he held the tournament a week after a devastating tornado ripped thru Tuscaloosa, raising over $6,000 for the Tornado Disaster Relief Fund. Swindoll raised over $8,000 in 2012 for American Cancer Society in honor of Hubert Kessler, a tennis activist who was battling melanoma. In 2013, he raised over $11,000 for Children’s Hospital in memory of Will May a junior who passed in a tragic accident.

Since then he has claimed numerous awards and honors as Tuscaloosa’s local tennis guru. After graduating from UA in 1985 with a degree in sports marketing, Swindoll received his first shot at being a head coach at Tuscaloosa Academy in 1987. There, he spent twelve seasons as head coach of both the girl’s and boy’s tennis programs, and won at least one state championship in each of those twelve years. He has twice been named Alabama High School Coach of the Year, 1994 and 1998, and is four-time Alabama Pro of the Year, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 2000.
