Scouting in Llangollen District The District is responsible for promoting the development of Scouting in the District and arranging co-operation with other organisations. It is also responsible for the raising of funds and the administration of the District’s finance and property and supervising the administration of Groups, particularly in relation to finance and the trusteeship of property. Attending to District administration, particularly relating to the appointment of Leaders, Section Assistants, Skills Instructors, Administrators and Advisers forms an important role for the District. The Llangollen Scout District covers an area comprising the southern part of Denbighshire and the south western part of Wrexham Maelor. It extends from Llandrillo and Corwen along the Dee valley to Chirk and includes from Johnstown to the Ceiriog valley.

The District is part of the Clwyd Area Scout Association which brings together the Llangollen District with the Scout Districts of Wrexham, Vale of Clwyd and Flintshire.

Annual Review 2017 - 2018

Llangollen District Scouts – Annual Report Baden Powell spoke of The Scout Association being a movement, in that everything keeps changing, evolving. And he was so right! I consider Llangollen District to be stable (certainly compared to many!), yet no two years are the same. So, I guess it means things stay interesting for our members and certainly keeps me on my toes! Statistically membership numbers are stable, but the quality of activities and opportunities increases year on year. Accessibility to a good range of activities, international trips and a well supported Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is proving popular with explorer scouts and numnbers here are increasing. Well done to Explorer Scout leaders in supporting this notoriously difficult – to – please age group (14-18 years). Adult numbers are up. Thank you to all our adults. Nothing could happen without you. We have sadly lost a Scout Troop in one area (lack of local volunteers), but gained a Beaver Colony and Scout Troop in another. We have more leaders than ever before qualified to run water activities, air rifle shooting and archery so it’s easier to deliver these activities locally, and more leaders with a Night Away permit so more individual sections can run their own events. All good. As ever, our District Team is incredible in supporting local leaders to provide the necessary (and often not necessary but highly valued) activities. This team was awarded the first ever “Group Winners” Award in the national Scoutscymru awards last October, recognizing the devotion of the team and opportunities offered. One of our team members, Rose CorbettThomas was also awarded a lifetime achievement award after more than 50 years of service to Scouting and still a face that pops up everywhere! The District team has changed a touch over the last 12 months. ADC (Beavers), Sarah Harrison has grown up and moved to Scouts, her place being taken now by Debs Fullard. Its not my place to record the activities offered over the year – team members can do that in their own reports – but I can comment on the fantastic cooperation of all leaders, meaning that on most District events, every group is represented. Summer 2017 saw our first ever allsection District Camp and I am proud to say that every section of every group attended. The teamwork demonstrated continues throughout the year with groups working together to ensure that our young members truly do get the opportunities they need, and if that can’t be provided in the local group, transition to another group is supported. True demonstration of the Family of Scouting.

There has been much publicity made nationally by The Scouts this year with an updated rebranding and recognition of the “Skills for Life” that we provide. Has it changed anything that we do? No. Skills for life is what it’s always been about, and will continue to be. 111 years in and getting stronger. Can’t be bad. Let’s raise a plastic camp mug to the next, exciting 12 months!

Joanne Gregory - District Commissioner

Cae Llwyd: District Campsite Report Not much has really changed in relation to the usage of Cae Llwyd. It is such a wonderful site although it continues to be more popular to scouting from outside of the District with scouts and explorers using it for week long camps. I know that the condition of the track leading up to the site is something that may put people off but, the effort is well worth it. It continues to be a very popular site for overnight camping for practice and assessed DoE expeditions. It is also very popular as a venue for canoeing and raft building. The Dee Valley Scout Canoe Club – fortunately, we have a group of instructors from within the District – again used the site for kayak and canoe training and a venue for a Foundation Safety and Rescue Training enjoyed particularly, by explorer Scouts who are hoping to complete their Silver and Gold DoE expedition by water. In the summer of 2017, the DVSC Club again ran well organised and popular canoe / kayak training weekends with two separate days for Paddlesport and BCU 1* training and assessment in June and two more in July concentrating on BCU 2* training and assessment. These were well attended with representation from most Groups within the District.

Discussions are still ongoing representatives of Dee Valley Water Company [now Severn Trent] regarding the renewal of the lease – it’s been over two years since these began! The drinking water equipment located in the galvanised cubicle has now been replaced. As always, if any Scout Group or Section is interested in using the site please contact me.

Gerry Kellett - Camp Warden

District Beaver Report District Beavers have been a little quieter than normal this year as we lost our Assistant District Commissioner (Beavers), Sarah Harrison, to Scouts. Thank you though to all Beaver leaders for pulling together until Debs Fullard (finally) agreed to take on the role. All Beavers in the District have had the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities and overnight events, including camping, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, hiking and so much more. Year on year the Beaver programme expands which is reflected in the surge in interest in Beavers. We welcome the successful reopening of a Beaver Colony at 1st Corwen and the involvement of leader Charlie in the national "Damboree" project to get more Beavers into tents, and their leaders camp permits. So, we welcome Deb into the brilliant District Team and look forward to an exciting 12 months for Beaver Scouts in Llangollen District.

Joanne Gregory - District Commissioner

District Cub Report Over the last year Cubs have taken part in various District Events including the Paddlepower Weekend, Sports evening and the highlight of the year, our first LLanboree. The Paddlepower weekend is for all members of Llangollen & District over 10 years old and is a great event for the older Cubs to work towards their BCU 1* Award as well as gaining staged Time on the water & Paddle Sports badges. It is an excellent link event for helping Cubs transition into Scouts and have a taste of what’s to come when they do.

The next event was the Sports night which was held at Penycae this year and included alternative sports to the usual races. The events included frizbee golf, football shootout, obstacle course, hockey course, blind trail and rubber band shooting. There were plenty of prizes to be won & the Cubs were left to try out whatever they fancied. To follow this, we had the Llanboree which was themed on Pirates and included many activities over the weekend. With it being an ‘all sections’ event, it was a fantastic opportunity for Cubs to mix with other Cubs as well as Beavers, Scouts & Explorers from all over our District. I’m sure that this will be included in other reports so I’ll leave this there with the thought that plans for a Llanboree 2020 are in the pipeline. JOTI was then held in October with the Cubs completing their International badge as well as the opportunity to contact other Scouts from all over the world. Cubs found out about India, making sweets, learning about Diwali and the festival of light. Towards the end of the year we held a District Quiz where Cubs took part in questions on many different subjects, their knowledge of Space always amazes me! Well done to all who took part & 1st Penycae for winning. We had a District Beaver & Cub Christmas party at the end of 2017 to raise funds for Bosnia 2018 – Many thanks to Neil for running the disco, the Cubs (and the leaders!) certainly had a great night. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Rose and all the Cub Leaders for their support over the last year and for all that you do to bring an excellent experience to the Cubs within our District. Unfortunately, the final event of the year – Kibblestone, was postponed due to the snow at the beginning of this year but has since morphed into a District Camp…. but that’s a story for next year.

Karen Knight - ADC Cub Scouts.

District Scout Report As a district we currently have 80 Scouts across 5 Groups. The groups being Llangollen, Penycae, Chirk, Johnstown and Corwen Our Scouts are being offered an amazing array of skills, activities and the opportunities to work towards gaining the top award within this section, allowing 10 to have been awarded with their Chief Scouts Gold Award in the last 12 months, and many more well on their way. We have been busy with so many things including, climbing, rafting, fencing, geocaching, survival skills, tracking, learning to drive real cars, changing wheels on cars, go kart racing and so much more the list is endless. Our Scout Leadership team within the district have enabled their young people to attend camps including All Wales Scout Camp, Chamboree, visits to the peak district, local expeditions, Cox Wood Scout Campsite and many more local to each group. The Scouts have also had the fantastic opportunity to attend Paddle sport training weekends and then being able to use the skills attained whilst attending river cruises. We have started to coordinate yet more District Activities and hope that in the next twelve months that we can share the current extensive experience and knowledge to the newer members of our leadership team thus offering even more incredible adventures for all our young people. Many thanks to all our dedicated and enthusiastic District Scout Leaders, you should all be very proud of what you have achieved as without your hard work and commitment we would not have done what we have. So, watch this space as who knows what we are going to be getting up to next, but one thing I can be assured of it will be rewarding and fun for all involved.

Sarah Harrison – ADC Scouts

District Explorer Scouts Another packed 12 months for Explorer Scouting in Llangollen District! Just look at the following joint District Explorer Scout activities:─ Explorer Scout Forums ─ 10 Pin Bowling Competition ─ Banff Mountain Film Festival ─ Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition Training Weekend ─ DoE Bronze / Silver practice and assessed walking expeditions ─ DoE Silver Assessed water expedition Adolygiad Blynyddol 2017 - 2018

─ ─ ─

District Explorers helped to run activities at the District Llanboree Camp Various ‘get-togethers’ including a weekend camp to plan for the 2018 Explorer Belt Fundraising events for Bosnia EB

Again, the District expedition training weekend was a great success with a record number of Explorer scouts attending – approaching 40.. This quality training enabled the Explorer Scouts to complete practice DoE expeditions and successful assessment. So well done to all those who completed their expedition section of the DofE. Explorer Scouts also took part in several camps [within their Groups], various canoe training sessions and the annual River Wye and Severn Canoe Trips. Young Leader Training for those Explorer Scouts who are or wish to work within the other sections within a Scout Group is mandatory in such situations and it is important that ALL Young Leaders are registered with the ESL(YL) unit, regardless of whether or not they take part in the wider Explorer Scout Programme. Unfortunately, Chirk Explorer Scout Unit had to close but those still wanting to continue have joined one of the two Explorer Units within the District - associated with two Scout Groups - Penycae and Llangollen. Both are very successful and have over 40 Explorer Scouts. That’s a record number of Explorer Scouts for the District and is a great testament to the quality of Explorer Leaders and the activities that are put on. There are some 14+ year-olds remaining in Scouting within some of the other Scout Groups - as always, there is an open invitation from both Explorer Units for any young person between the ages of 14 to 18 within the District to go along and take part in Explorer Scouting. If any other Scout Group within the District would like me to come along to talk about the merits and excitement of Explorer Scouting to older scouts I would be only be too pleased to do so. The highlight to come will be the District Explorer Belt to Bosnia.

Annual Review 2017 - 2018

Scouting age ranges There are 400,000 young people in Scouting, spread across five sections: Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and the Scout Network. Each section has its own balanced programme of activities, badges and awards.

Beavers (6–8) Beaver Scouts are our youngest members. They usually meet weekly to take part in a wide range of activities including games, crafts, singing, visits and good turns, along with plenty of outdoor activities. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps and sleepovers. It may be the first time they spend a night away from home so it’s a real adventure for them.

Cubs (8-10½) A Cub Scout Pack can have up to 36 Cub Scouts and is split into smaller groups called Sixes. Cubs take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors. Camps and holidays are some of the most memorable events of the year for Cubs.

Scouts (10½–14) Each Scout Troop consists of small units of six to eight Scouts called a Patrol, usually led by a Patrol Leader. Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Throughout the year, Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp. Rock climbing, potholing, gliding, photography and international experiences are just some of the things they get up to.

Explorer Scouts (14–18) Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections. There is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions.

Scout Network (18-25) Scout Network is the fifth and final section of the Scouting movement. Scout Network members take part in a variety of activities, which they undertake and organise themselves with the support of a Scout Network Leader. Example activities include abseiling, camping, circus skills, climbing, go-karting, gorge walking, hiking, pioneering and watersports.
