Family Home Health Agency (FHHA) underwent a complete renovation to accommodate the expanding staff of over 100 employees. New landscaping, lighting and outdoor seating area for employees and visitors showcase the exterior additions to the facility. The “wave” wraps around the building, sheltering walkways and creating visual interest. The “eyebrows”, three interlocking canopies, provide shelter from sun and rain to provide a breezy yet protected outdoor area for employees. Curved awnings over the windows use a perforated fabric that filters the sun, reducing solar heat gain and preventing glare for employees. The design for the awnings has received two SWIFA awards.

The tower is a response to the agricultural and social crisis in Korea. It consists of two separate uses, an agricultural and fish farming business and a mental hospital. The farming utilizes a rotating aeroponic system and aquaponic systems that are situated in the double skin facade of the perimeter of the building. The hospital is situated on the inner layer of this building, which provide spaces that deal with all the aspects of mental healing, including services from optometrists, dentists, neurologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. These two uses are joined by the multipurpose atrium space at ground level that is primarily used for the farmer’s market. This atrium helps erase the stigma of mental institutions in South Korea, and encourages the community and public to frequent the space.

The project is part of new development consisting of mainly high rises in Nanchang, China. The program is 70,000 sqm of office space and 30,000 sqm of hotel space. The main goal of the exercise is the use of parametric software (grasshopper) to explore quick design alternatives. The facade pattern is determined by the amount of sunlight that each side of the building receives. Each side has a unique ratio of glass to shade. While the shape of the building reacts to minimize the amount of solar radiation.
