Yikes!Ifyou are new visitor to Rocky Point, you are probably not aware of the amount of water that can be dumped onto the roadways within a matter of minutes… literally a minute or two. The Hwy. 85 from Gila Bend to Ajo forms water puddles that may not look daunting but hit them at 65 mph and you can very well send your vehicle off the road and, at the very least, give yourself a good scare. Probably the worst part (consistently) of Hwy. 85 during monsoon season is the stretch from Why to the border through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The dips/washes fill up and run fast and hard across the road bringing rocks, sand, mud, and debris with the rush of water…so be very careful as we are not out of monsoon season yet. Tons of you will be coming down for Labor Day Weekend so keep your eye on the weather and always check out The WhyNot Travel Store on Facebook as they do a great job of keeping us apprised of traffic and hazards. The first half of Hwy. 8 outside of Sonoyta can get tricky too with their running washes causing the same problems during monsoon season. If you’re not familiar with the road, please don’t drive like you are. There’s nothing wrong with hitting your hazards if you’re feel more comfortable driving slower than other people, or you are going to slow down, or are just unsureso much better than slamming on your brakes, which really makes no one happy. I stopped by El Pollo Papago to get some of Martin’s delicious chicken and say hello – he is such a wonderful person. I always give him a good tip because I know he will “pay it forward”. He told me that all of his tips have been going towards his son’s college education. He is so very proud of him and just beams when he talks about him. His son is in college in Puebla and is also a librarian. Every week they take books out into the barrios and read to the children. He even does the same thing when he comes home to Puerto Peñasco – he works with a local mission and helps the less fortunate as much as he can while he’s here. So, if you don’t already buy chicken from Martin, please look him up and stop by. His chickens are delicious, and he is such a great person. I’ve known him since I’ve been here and have followed him to everywhere he’s moved – he’s now been at his current location on Constitucion for a while and it’s super easy to find (it’s even on Google Maps and WAZE) – not far from Farmacia SanOh,Andres.and thank you fellow WAZE app users. I see more of you out there now and your reporting of road hazards and traffic have been very helpful. Don’t forget that our border has extended hours (open until 10:00PM) for the Labor Day Holiday Weekend on Friday, September 2nd and Monday, September 5th. Drive safely and we’ll see you at the beach. Editorial by Lannette Phipps Rain! Rain! Rain! While Arizona was being hammered with rain during this monsoon season, Peñasco actually had a few days as well…enough to make our roofs leak, flood some parts of town and undo some of the potholes fills. Sonoyta was an absolute mess mid-month with slides and water everywhere. Hwy. 85 from Gila Bend to the border saw a lot of water and made a few of the dips impassable. I came north mid-month and found myself in a line of traffic, both ways, with running washes. The larger trucks could get through, but the little cars (smartly) waited – the ones that did attempt to go through the rush of water stalled out and had to be pushed off the road. This was in Organ Pipe where, as you know, there is no shoulder, so it was a bit of a mess. Continuing north, I had just gone through a pretty muddy and debris flowing dip, so I flashed my lights at a Camaro coming the other way – apparently, he did not know I was trying to warn him of the danger ahead - and he hit that muddy water dip full speed which sent rooster tails on both sides and ended up with him the other lane.

Dr. Antonio Castro and nurse Rosa Alejandra recently spoke to our Rotary Club concerning necessary fumigation strategies against rickettsia that must go hand in hand with the efforts of deticking dogs. The Rocky Point Rotary Club in conjunction with the Peñasco Department of Health continue to fight this serious health issue. There will be several activities planned this next year around this topic. Several Rotarians will be traveling to Utah this month. This past year we hosted Rotarians from Utah and worked together in Rocky Point on several projects, now it is time to return the favor! By being a member of our local Rotarian Club, we are part of a network which reaches all over the world!! Friendship exchanges are fun, and we are looking forward to reuniting with our Rotary friends in Utah.This summer we are busy planning our years activities. The following are tentative dates and subject to change, but here goes: October 12th - World greatest meal / polio fund raiser and then October 13-16th - Vistamerica eyeglass clinic. We have also been busy with coordinating our youth exchange program. It looks like we will have three outgoing exchange students this year and two incoming exchange students.Now I want to share with you something that happens all the time because Rocky Point has a Rotary Club: Fellow Rotarians from Fountain Hills, Arizona answered a call for a much-needed wheelchair for local resident, Angel. Alicia Grajeda, from the Rocky Point Times contacted me to see if the Club might possibly be able to help a long-time friend of the Newspaper. Angel used to wash their cars (and help out) for many, many years when their office was off of Calle 13. He was hit by a car a few years back and is paralyzed from the waist down. He went into their office a couple weeks ago asking for help in getting a wheelchair because the one he had was in pretty bad shape. So, Alicia reached out to me, and I reached out to fellow Rotarians and now Angel has a new wheelchair. Such great people! If you would like to become part of the Rotary Club here in Puerto Peñasco, you are welcome to attend our weekly morning meetings on Wednesday at 9:00 AM at the Friendly Dolphin in the Old Port.

By The Old Gringo Of all times of the year, living in Peñasco during August and September are the most trying months. The temperatures rise from the merely uncomfortable in June and July, to the downright torrid. The humidity rises to levels nearing 100% and the sea temperatures climb into the mid 90°F+ range. In years past our town would wind down and ‘go to sleep’ for a couple of months, until the heat broke. Work was done, but only on an ‘as necessary’ basis and everyone moved slowly. Whether it is from the post COVID need to travel and get out, or as I suspect, Puerto Peñasco has been “discovered” as a tourist Mecca, August and September no longer carry the same connotation as they once did. The traffic into the hotels and condos around Sandy Beach is constant and steady. A friend who works at one of the hotels there told me that she is hoping the traffic subsides during the next couple of months so she can get a day off! For any number of reasons, the hotel and rental accommodation market is hot, hot, hot! Just like our weather! It could be the great air conditioning, proximity of pools with swim up bars or the availability of water sports, but summer here just doesn’t seem the same anymore. True, many of our guest visitors are from Arizona, where high heat and the monsoon humidity are not so much different than they are in Peñasco, but that has always been the case. In my opinion, the availability of world class hotel and rental accommodations is the difference. Let’s face it, why spend your free time locked in your home in Arizona...and maybe using your swimming pool, when you can come to our town and enjoy being pampered at a luxury resort with all the amenities, proximity to great restaurants and lots of things to do. That will take the knots out of anyone’s rope. Still, if you live here, you get the urge to head to cooler climes once the August doldrums hit. Watching the condensed humidity run from your roof scuppers and down your screens is not fun. Walking on the beach after, say, 9:00 a.m., becomes reminiscent of watching Fijian fire walkers on beds of hot coals. Thank goodness for air Swimmingconditioning!becomes a new exercise in futility too. You go in the ocean, get wet, come out dry off...you’re still wet. The breeze is wet...your towel is wet...you are wet, and at 90°+ F, the water is not even remotely refreshing. Without a cooled swimming pool (with a swim up bar) and a friendly bartender offering you a frozen Margarita, Piña Colada or a Bloody Mary, you can get a little cranky...if you know what I mean. Going into town for necessities or to visit friends becomes a chore. As I mentioned, the town used to take a snooze during August and September, with many of our favorite restaurants closing for the entire month of August and traveling to all of the little tienditas that you frequented was a simple matter. Traffic used to be nonexistent during those months and it made the small trips worthwhile, mostly.Yesterday, I had the occasion to drive from Miramar over to Las Palomas to see a friend. It was a Tuesday, around 2 p.m. Normally, a drive like that takes about 40 minutes. Not yesterday. Yesterday it took an hour...in August! Remember that this article is being written a month in advance. The trip from Miramar into town was uneventful and usual. The drive from Benito Juarez and Fremont to Las Palomas was a nightmare! The traffic was intense for a weekend, let alone for a mid-week trip. Every stop sign, every traffic light engendered a backup. So much for going to town during August and September!Anyway, it is good to see the level of activity the town has. It means prosperity for the locals who are taking full advantage of it, and it means more “gringo friendly” outlets for our visitors to enjoy, although the cultural flavor gets diluted in the process. Me? I’m heading up to the mountains for a month or so, until the weather cools down. I’ll leave Peñasco in the capable hands of my local friends and their families while the turistas have a full run at everything the town has to offer. Literally, thousands of dogs have been saved and placed in forever homes because of her work. Seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, year after year, she has grappled with these kinds of problems and found workable solutions. But now, this unselfish work has taken its toll.
BARB’S DOG RESCUE A Summer to Forget

You have probably heard the old adage, “When it rains, it pours.” And no, we aren’t talking about the yearly monsoon season that always brings complications to the area. This article addresses what has been one of the most challenging of all the summers we have faced. The problems are serious, and while the staff and dedicated volunteers are working tirelessly to address these problems, we come to you now in need of Waterhelp.shortages, broken air conditioners, problems with our transport van, washing machines on their last leg, or spin as it would be, the intense summer heat in the Sonoran Desert, and the ever-rising number of dogs desperate for our care. Any one of these conditions presents unique challenges. One on top of the other has made 2022 a summer we would like to forget. But sadly, these difficulties are easier to bear than the absence of the one person whose dedication, love and hard work built and maintained this Rescue over the last 20 years. Barb is away from her beloved dogs and is undergoing much needed medical care in the United States. Like any valuable CEO, Barb knows everything that goes on here. She knows each dog by name and understands the challenges each currently faces. Simply said, Barb is the heart and soul of the Rescue and the author of the Rescue’s mission to save as many of the homeless dogs in Mexico as possible.
As most of you know, Barb’s Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization recognized in the U.S. That makes all donations you make 100% tax deductible. Whether it’s a cash donation or one to help fill our never-ending need for high quality dog food, dog treats, puppy pads, cleaning supplies, detergent, bleach, or gently used towels, blankets and other dog supplies, this is what allows the Rescue to continue its valuable work. See the information at the end of this column for ways to reach Anotherus. constant is the large number of dogs who arrive at the Rescue expecting a litter of pups. Those puppies grow quickly and need socialization. The Rescue is open from 10 am to 2 pm each day, and we love visitors who can provide this service. It may just be the most fun and rewarding thing you do while visiting Mexico. We always have dogs who have been adopted and simply need a ride back to the U.S. to meet their forever family in various Arizona locations. The first week I spent in Cozumel so many years ago was the best time I ever had. The second through the fifth were oaky, but nothing like the first. I’ve always heard it said that, “You can’t go back.” I guess that means the first time you try something, if your high expectations are met and even exceeded, it will be tough to ever reach that level of pleasure again. But that’s not always the case, according to Brenda Washington of Gilbert.
CAP’N GREG: Ah, yes. The “mañana attitude.” It’s a very real thing, and not at all like the rat race back home, right?
BRENDA: I think there are two reasons for that. First, they aren't trying hard enough.
CAP’N GREG: May I buy you another piña colada?
BRENDA: Sure, Cap’n Greg. After I finish this one. But it could take a while.
BRENDA: Good times don’t just happen. You have to go grab some. Get off your butt and jump in the water. Stroll the Malecon. Go fishing. Try a Sonoran hot dog on the street, as well as eat at places that serve five-star meals on white tablecloths. Do a sunset cruise. Don’t spend all your time in one bar.
CAP’N GREG: Like how?
BRENDA: Absolutely. The beer is cold. The scenery is spectacular. The people are delightful. In a laidback place like Rocky Point, there is so much to enjoy, and not a single reason to hurry through the experience.

Stingray Stings
Our Rocky Point doctors, clinics and Red Cross are well adept at treating stings. The best way to avoid a sting is by doing the “stingray shuffle!” To avoid stepping on a ray, shuffle your feet slowly as you move through the surf to scare the rays away. Round stingrays are very good at burying in the sand and will remain buried even as you approach. By shuffling your feet you will brush against them and they will scurry away. If you walk through the water as you normally do you will most likely step square on the back of them which causes their barbed tail to come up and sting you. Be extra careful in area where the sediment is silty/sand or where the water is particularly warm.What do you do if you get stung by a ray? Get out of the water and head to the nearest doctor. If you are stranded out where these facilities are not available follow these steps and seek medical attention as soon as you can. First, let the wound bleed - this will allow any toxins entered with the barb to get out. Next, immerse the wound in hot water, as hot as the patient can stand for approximately 45 minutes: This denatures the protein toxin and relieves a majority of the pain. Then treat wound as any other puncture wound or cut, keep clean and bandage: This reduces the chance of infection, promotes healing. If pain or bleeding persists, if wound is large or if patient shows signs of an allergic reaction, see a doctor immediately! If you are staying at a resort go to the desk or convenience store - they may have a first aid kit with a treatment.

Many charter boats and pangas are available for hire by the hour/half-day/ day, or organized trip. We do not have any companies that rent boats for your personal use. Charter boats are located all over town and at the docks and on your way into Old Port (right hand side) as well as at Safe Marina and in Cholla Bay. Reputable charters are always the best choice. Please make sure there is enough safety gear on the boat for all persons in your party and that the captain has a marine radio in the event of an emergency.

However, if you plan to fish from your boat, each person fishing must have a fishing license which can be purchased here in Puerto Peñasco.Aswithvehicles, it is a good idea to carry two copies of your title and registration for your watercraft and trailer. DO NOT BRING THE ORIGINALS! One copy should be kept on your boat/watercraft and the other shoud be carried on your person or put in a safe location during your stay.
First aid for any scorpion sting should involve cooling the wound, which allows the body to more easily break down the molecular structure of the venom. Cooling also reduces pain. Use ice or cool running water if available. On a warm night, a wet compress will help. Keep the victim calm and still. Panic and activity speed up the venom’s spread. Symptoms may include heavy sweating, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, loss of bowel control, jerky muscular reflexes, and respiratory distress. These serious signs are cause for quick evacuation to a medical facility. Antitoxins are available in many areas where dangerous scorpions live. The doctors, clinics and Red Cross are experts at treating stings.

Jellyfish They are usually bright blue and are present in our waters during June, July and August, although they are sometimes hard to see because of the clarity of the water. Some years we have a few, and other years we have tons. In some beach communities, you will find far less than others. A good test to see if they are present, is to look along the tidelines for any that have washed ashoreif they’re up there then there’s a pretty good chance they’re in the water. Use caution when walking barefoot on the beach or digging through the sand with your hands, they can still sting you (I know from experience). If you are stung, get to a doctor or the Red Cross immediately for treatment.

The only U.S. cell carrier, we have found to work in Rocky Point 96% of the time, is AT&T’s International Plan. The Green Angels patrol the highway (Hwy. 8) from Puerto Peñasco to Sonoyta offering free roadside assistance to ve- hicles experiencing mechanical problems. Their trucks are green and white and clearly marked. They are on patrol from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week. What to do if you need help? If you need assistance on the highway, whether it be a broken fan belt, blown tire or empty gas tank, pull over to the side of the road and lift the hood of your vehicle. If it is at night, please use your flashers for safety and always move as far away from the highway as you can to avoid accidents. Feliz Agosto Rocky Point……. whFeliz Septiembre to all our fine friends in Rocky Point!!! We made it through almost all of summer and WOW, it was a beautiful summer. The weather was not too hot or as muggy as I remember some years but maybe I should just put a muzzle in it because I do not want to jinx us. Even in late July, if you were on the beach or near the beach and relaxing, the breeze was enough to keep you cool without necessarily sprinting into the pool or sea for relief. All in all, I would say one of the best summers weather wise that I can recall. Before we announce the winners of the Rocky Point Times Photo Contest…oohhh did we mention world famous? Well, let’s say word has gotten around town. I don’t know if everyone received the low down on the cool prizes because of all the years of putting the contest together, this year by far had the most entries! Some of the entries were serious, some had some amazing views but, in the end, our fine panel of judges chose the one that I think we all need a bit more of lately…laughter! Past winners usually had amazing sunsets, sunrises, dolphins, sea turtles and cool shots from around town. But this year it was unanimous…let’s go with the fun shot! Speaking of fun…a great big THANK YOU to our super fun donors of the prizes for the ROCKY POINT TIMES PHOTO CONTEST. At first, after the conquest, interracial marriages between the soldiers and Indio women were sanctioned. Eventually things changed. Spanish women were beginning to come to New Spain and did not approve of these marriages; they were strongly discouraged. The Spanish Officials positioned in New Spain began feeling threatened by the education given to the Amerindian aristocracy, who would be in direct competition to maintaining Spanish dominance over the Mexica. Slowly but surely the collages were closed. Besides losing a way to become educated, the Spanish guilds were successful in barring the Indios from all professions and skilled trades, such as doctors, shopkeepers, smiths and artisans. The Spanish King forbade them from taking Holy Orders and joining the priesthood. Laws were created under their logic of “protecting the Indios” from being corrupted. The laws also prohibited the Indios from living in close proximity to the Spanish; they were not allowed to wear European dress, own horses or firearms and were not allowed to have debt of more than five pesos; effectively, giving them no way to better themselves. The indios were usually not punished by the death sentence, but it was not uncommon for them to be brutally beaten to death for infractions. A dichotomy was created as the Indios were scorned for not being European and prevented from trying to become Europeanized. There was not much to strive for, no way to better themselves, basically they became slaves; many became drunks and sometimes their frustration turned into violence. The Spaniards effectively created a culture of apathetical, irresponsible and uneducated peasants. Before the invasion of the Aztec world by the Conquistadors the Aztec had developed a highly organized society. Their architecture had built the most beautiful cities in the world, far beyond any that existed in all of Europe. The Aztec possessed the most comprehensive accurate calendar, a healthy diet, a sophisticated writing method, an organized war machine and strict moral behavioral codes. If it were not for the human sacrificial rituals, they had an idyllic society. What a shame that such a highly evolved culture was conquered, destroyed and has faded into the history books. A Codex is a painted pectoral and written history of the Aztec, both from the pre-Columbian and colonial eras. They documented the lineage of Aztec royalty, agrarian cycles, religious ceremonies and the Aztec gods, among other topics.
By Rosarie Salerno (638) 200-1106 With altruistic intentions, the Spanish Conquistadors and Franciscan friars were committed to protecting the Indios. Their initial goal was to Europeanizes the Mexica, integrating them into Christianity and the Spanish culture. The friars were especially dedicated to the task. Padre Pedro de Gante (1480-1572) is known as “the first of the great educators of the Americas,” he was an outstanding writer and translator of the Nahuatl language. He created the School of San Jose de los Naturales for the Aztecs and other indigenous people in Tenochtitlan, modern day Mexico City. There were two other collages located in Tlatelolco and Michoacan. The Indios excelled in the entire curriculum. Besides religion and culture they were taught European philosophy, reading and writing, art and language, including Latin. It was said that the Indios spoke better Latin than the Spaniards. They were largely responsible for writing the translations of history and religious doctrines. With these skills the Aztec were instrumental in the first book published in New Spain, 1546 CE, the Breve y mas compendiosa doctrina Christiana en lengua Mexicano y Castellana. The Doctrina Christiana was a translation of the book that was written in Latin by St. Augustine of Hippo in 397 CE. The book instructs the clergy on how to interpret and teach the Scriptures. It was translated into Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec, and Spanish; transcribed in Latin letters also known as the Roman alphabet. The Aztec also wrote, in Spanish, some 500 Codices.

By Cholla Charli St. Joseph’s Mission Church in La Cholla has continued to evolve, since November of 2014, when the first Mass was held in the cinder block shell that would become a beautiful chapel. From the bring-your-own-chair days when we shooed out the pi geons and dogs before Mass, to standing-room-only services, wed dings and events, the one constant, which draws people back again and again, is the simplicity. The Church, which Peter and the apostles formed in the tradi tions of Jesus, was not grandiose or rich or pompous. It was per sonal communication of the word of God and an invitation to every one to belong and find peace. Over the years, however, the hierarchy began to model itself off the riches and splendor of emperors and kings, in an effort to create an im age of grandeur and importance. Most Catholics grew up in that atmosphere, with gold-tone chalic es and brocade vestments, incense, silent reverence and rote recital of prayers in Latin. It caused many to turn away and seek a more person al encounter with God in the Holy Spirit.The services at St. Joseph’s, and particularly since the return of our pastor, Padre Marco Lopez, are simple, soulful and deeply touch ing at times. On most Sundays, he uses a chalice that was hewn by hand by a local craftsman from black walnut wood. Although a beautiful gold-tone chalice was do nated to the church and is used for high holy days, Father Marco pre fers the wooden chalice because we are in the church of Saint Joseph, theHiscarpenter.expression of Catholicism has brought many people back to the little church in La Cholla. Where summer Mass in the past might see a half-dozen people at the most, we enjoyed near-seatingcapacity attendance this summer. Of course the air conditioning played a part in that! The big difference, however, is that simplicity. The Mass is bilin gual, so all can understand. Fa ther Marco is animated and comi cal and truly touched by the Holy Spirit. His sermons almost always contain a joke or two and the mes sage relates to all of us in this day and age. When he blesses us with holy water, he jokingly speaks as if to “drive out demons.” But, then, whoAtknows?theend of the Mass, he asks a special blessing on those who trav el and invites all to return. The children’s home is located outside of town, apx. 15 miles, and houses anywhere from 10 to 40 children. It provides temporary housing for families that cannot afford to take care of their children or are having a hard time. This is not an orphanage - these children are not up for adoption. The Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club is responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and staffing the VHF Marine Channel 28 for the northern Sea of Cortez as well as CB Radio Channel 3. The CBSC pays the salary of the operator, aides in search and rescue operations. They also publish the Cholla Chatter and put on numerous events during the year such as the CBSC Fishing Derby, Horseshoe Tournament and other fun stuff held in Cholla Bay.

El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is considered one of the most unique volcanic zones in the world. The conservation of these gigantic craters and the surrounding areas are an important part of our ancient history and culture. Self guided hikes, overnight camping and exploring are allowed in the area provided you do not harm, disrupt or take plants, wildlife or artifacts from the area. Xochitl’s is on the opposite side of JJs and the first restaurant you will see coming into Cholla Bay, right after the pavement. Xochitl’s or (Sally’s as I have always known it for the wonderful woman that created it, rest in peace) serves breakfast, lunch and take and bake pizzas, they have a/c inside and a great upper deck with a unique view of Cholla and a huge variety of reasonably priced delicious food. Save some room for a fish taco, because if you haven’t been to Mr. Fish Taco, well... you just have to. (generally open weekends, limited hours) Need a plan? Here’s my agenda for a Cholla BayStartDay.the weekend with breakfast at Xochitl’s, maybe have one Bloody Mary, machaca and eggs, and take a picture in front of the cool artwork on the outside, next you’ll pass Cholla Bay Oyster House, go inside look at the bay and sit at the bar made from a boat, snap a pic and have a beverage, maybe an oyster or crab cake, and then walk out to the edge of the bay and take in all the treasures you can spot in low tide, wander along the sand, shoot some pretty nature pictures, and walk some more. You’ll need the exercise to continue on the next round. Head back and have another cool beverage at Cholla Bay Oyster House, get back in your vehicle, (off road vehicles welcome in Cholla) and then drive past JJ’s Cantina a couple hundred yards, and stop at Mr. Fish Taco, if it’s open have a fish taco at Mr. Fish and take a pic. Now, it’s time to head back to JJ’s and take another trek on the sand at low tide, or if it’s high tide march down the steps to the water and take a dip and cool off in the Sea of Cortez, wherever you’re traveling from, know that at JJ’s you are at 38 elevation. You can’t get much lower….come on up, dry off in the sunshine on the patio and listen to some live music. They have an outdoor bar and indoor bar. Once you’re dry, move inside and try the a/c. You’ll probably be hungry again, if so don’t miss the jalapeño mac and cheese, shrimp tostada, cauliflower buffalo bites, or pastor pineapple chicken sandwich. Buy yourself some cool swag at the Swag Shop, take some pictures around the fire pit, and you’ll have a day to remember. And, just as they do at Wrecked at The Reef, JJ’s will always accept donations and will reciprocate with a free drink/ beer coupon. The donations can be for anywhere or anything such as Red Cross, Casa Hogar, Barbs Dog Rescue, Santa Claus Club etc. and they will make deliveries as often as needed to any places necessary. So, if you’re planning on spending the day in Cholla bring some donations with you. Coming soon there will be one more exciting spot to add to the Cholla Bay line up. The Blue Flag makes our coastline the only coast in the State of Sonora as having met the environmental and sustainable guidelines required for international distinction. Overall, the first half of 2022 has been a success with hotel occupancy rates averaging 42% representing revenue of over 1.68 million pesos based on average expenses per visitor according to the Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau or OCV. The OCV said that the activation of this aerial connectivity will shorten distances for new tourism opportunities and open business markets wishing to take advantage of reduced travel times. This in turn, will translate into longer stays in this port, which offers the cleanest and warmest beaches in northwestern Mexico, the desert and its dunes, the Pinacate Reserve, significant hotel infrastructure, great cuisine, quality service, and many places to explore. This is a win/win for the city and will help to expand our tourism industry and real estate economy. By Vince Deadmond Emblazoned on T-shirts, bumper stickers, and posters since the early 80s, the No Sniveling saying is the perfect thought if you are visiting Puerto Peñasco in September. Normally, I am singing the praises of our funky little beach town. But if you visit in September, you are in for some heat, humidity, and a probable trip to your dermatologist for a rash you have never seen before. Normally I would be talking in glowing terms of our slice of paradise, but the extreme heat, humidity, and insects in September are going to make your trip far from Instagram perfect. If you come in September, adjust your attitude… and No Sniveling. Yes, I am planning a September fly fishing trip to Puerto Peñasco, but I am expecting some difficulties. I will do my fishing trips early in the day, I’ll be in the water, and I’ll have plenty of water to keep hydrated. If you are planning to fish, I would recommend having bug spray handy. The usual hat, sunblock, sunglasses, and quick dry clothing will help you to stay more comfortable. While planning I would recommend you plan your October and November trips to Puerto Peñasco. Those are my favorite months for visiting. Weather, water, and fishing are all good in October and November. While the heat and humidity are bad, the fly fishing is quite good! The warm water has the fish hungry. I’ll probably toss some bigger flies and expect some larger fish. I normally fish one of my trusty 8 weight rods with a #4 Clouser attached. I’ll probably experiment with the 10 weight and throw some 2/0 Clousers, and maybe some 5/0 articulated Musky flies, just for fun. Even with all of warnings I have given you, I hope to see you on the water fishing Peñasco in September.

You will need to go to the small building, which sits in the middle of the two lanes, and tell the officer what items you have to declare and the value of each item. When you are finished filling out the form, the import tax (impuestos) will be assessed and you will be handed two forms to take to the bank and pay. (The bank is at the side of the brick building, past the fountain.) If it is after hours, you will pay your impuestos to the agent who will stamp your form and issue you a receipt. An agent may want to come and inspect your load. The taxes you pay are in pesos and you can now pay with a credit card (they will accept dollars) and are to be paid directly to the bank and you will be issued a receipt. You will need that receipt to cross the border. (If you are pulled over by Aduana after leaving the border, you will need the receipt as proof of payment.)

Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is located in the State of Sonora on the Sea of Cortez. It is approz. 66 miles from the U.S. border at Lukeville, AZ and the Mexican border at Sonoyta, MX. Rocky Point is located within the “Free Zone”, so no vehicle permits are required for you to visit, but you will need your Passport or other ID (see above) to re-enter the United States. If you choose the Integral Inspection the fine will be 1½x the value. In both cases you forfeit the right to the tax exemption.

The Crossing at San Luis (south of Yuma, AZ) is the fastest and easiest point to cross. Head East on I-8 and take Hwy. 95 S towards Yuma. You will cross at San Luis Rio Colorado. Continue straight for a few blocks, turn left at the signal on to Ave. Obregon. That is the main road through San Luis. You will go all the way through town and see a sign for Puerto Peñasco and El Golfo de Santa Clara off to your right. Exit right at the bridge and follow the signs to Puerto Peñasco. Theres is a toll booth you will go through (currently $110 pesos). The road is smooth and free of potholes and has plenty of places to pass and pull over. Just outside of El Golfo, you will turn left onto the Coastal Highway (003) and follow that all the way to Rocky Point. Signs are clearly marked. Vehicle Insurance Mexican Law states that you MUST HAVE MEXICAN INSURANCE while driving in Mexico. A minimum of liability is required though full coverage is recommended. You can insure your driver’s license if driving a buggy, quad, rail, etc., but the vehicle cannot be insured for theft. If your vehicle is stolen, you must immediately file a local, federal (state) and U.S. police report. The insurance companies usually pay low blue book and extras such as rims, tires, stereo, etc. are not covered.
Nuts: acorns, almonds, cocoa beans, chestnuts, coconuts (without husks or milk), peanuts, pecans, pinons (pinenuts), tamarind beans, walnuts and waternuts. Seafood: 50 lbs. of fish or shrimp per vehicle. Avoid customs penalties by declaring all articles acquired in Mexico, and in your possession at the time of your reentry into the United States. If in doubt whether an article should be declared, always declare it first to the Customs Officer on duty. If you understate the value of an article you declare, you may have to pay a penalty in addition to the payment of duty. If you fail to declare an article, acquired in Mexico, not only is the item subject to seizure, but you will be liable for a personal penalty. You are entitled to a $800 exemption in a 30 day period. Articles totaling $800 may be entered free of duty, subject to limitations on liquor, cigarettes & cigars.
Prohibited Items Agricultural items are prohibited if they can carry plant pests or animal diseases.
Cuban Cigars Medicine requires a prescription, carry a copy of your U.S. prescription with you.

Most U.S. policies ARE NOT recognized in Mexico. You may purchase insurance over the internet, phone, mail or stop at a number of places on your way to Rocky Point. Look in this issue for Mexican Insurance. This highway will run from Baja, California through Rocky Point to San Carlos. It is completed from El Golfo de Santa Clara to Rocky Point and from El Desemboque to Puerto Libertdad. Southern California visitors will be able to cut their driving time by using this beautiful, safe new highway! It is a nice, wide, 2-lane highway with rest stops, plenty of passing and wide shoulders for emergencies. See Driving to Puerto Peñasco at the beginning of this section. Everyone in the vehicle needs to provide one of the above forms if identificaton. Parents bringing their babies, who have not received their official birth certificate, may bring the temporary one issued by the hospital. Children 16 and under will be required to show a copy of their birth certificate.
Live Birds: wild and domesticated birds, including poultry are prohibited. To im port personally owned pet birds, contact agricultural inspectors in advance.
You are allowed to bring in $300 USD per person worth of new merchandise - this does not include your personal items such as clothing, toiletries, etc. If you have new merchandise in excess of $300 per person you will need to declare your items and pay the impuestos (taxes) before crossing into Mexico. You may import up to $1,000 USD in new merchandise per vehicle without the assistance of a Customs ToBroker.declare items you are bringing into Mexico, turn left as you cross the border, just beyond the chainlink fence. Park in the designated spot and go into the Aduana Building in the middle of the two lanes. See Crossing the Border for more information on declaring merchandise. If your merchandise totals more than $3,000 USD per vehicle, you will need the assistance of a customs broker. Customs brokers are located on the Mexican side of the border. Park on the U.S. side and walk across to one of their offices.
Puerto Peñasco is located in the Free Zone, where you do not need vehicle/tourist visas to visit. If you plan to travel beyond the Free Zone you will need the following: FMT (personal tourist visa) and your vehicle permit if you plan to drive. Personal(FMT)Visa Available at Immigrationthe Office in Sonoyta, on your right as you cross the border. They are open from 8:00 AM until Midnight. You will need to bring your birth certificate and/or valid driver’s license. You can either park on the U.S. side and walk across or you can go through the border and park. You will need to show your ID and fill out the necessary paperwork (it is in English and Spanish). Once you have filled out the paperwork you will take it over to Banca Serfin, pay approx. $558 pesos (per person) and return to the office to give them a copy.
Straw: generally prohibited. This includes wheat straw, seeds, animal feed, and all articles made from this material. In addition to the excepted items listed above, many agricultural items are per mitted if they pass inspection to be sure they are free of pests, soil and sand.

FIREARMS & DRUGS Firearms, illegal drugs and ammunition are NOT allowed into Mexico. Hunters may bring their firearm with the proper paperwork/ clearance. Possession carries a pentalty of 5 to 30 years.
Your deposit plus any interest will be returned to you when you leave Mexico. You may choose to obtain a bond through an authorized Mexican bonding company located at all border crossings. The bonding company also assess taxes and processing costs for this service. The vehicle permit is good for 6 months and for any type of vehicle weighing under 3 tons. When departing Mexico, and if you are not planning to drive the vehicle back into Mexico, the permit must be canceled with Customs. If your car is found in Mexico, beyond the Free Zone, and beyond the authorized time, or without the appropriate papers, it will be confiscated.
The vehicle may be driven by the spouse or adult children as long as they have the same immigration status. It is a good idea to get a notarized document, if you are driving a vehicle beyond the free zone that is not registered in your name, nor the owner is in the vehicle. It should simply state that the owner has given you permission to drive the vehicle, you may want to include the make, model, year, color and VIN number.
At this time you cannot obtain your FMT in Peñasco, but the Immigration office can stamp your FM3 or FM2 for travel beyond the free zone. If you are flying into the airport you can obtain your FMT when you arrive at the Peñasco airport. By law, anyone who stays in Mexico for more than 72 hours, is required to have an FMT, whether you stay within the Free Zone or not.
Automobile Visa The Free Zone covers most of Sonora, but if you plan to drive past Guaymas, Sonora, you will need to obtain a permit for your vehicle. This can be done in San Emeterio, about 20 miles south of Sonoyta on Hwy 2 or at the check point outside of Guaymas. The cost for this permit is approx. $59.16 dlls. You cannot get a permit in Rocky Point. You will need the original and 3 copies of: • Registration, Title and the valid driver’s license of the vehicle owner • Credit card in the vehicle owner’s name • FMT, FM3, FM2, Passport or birth certificate • Leasing contract (if the vehicle is rented or leased), which must be in the name of the person importing the vehicle. If the vehicle belongs to a company, the papers certifying the employee works for the Ifcompany.youdo not have a credit card you can post a bond payable to the Federal Treasury issued by an authorized bonding company in Mexico. As an alternative to posting bond you may make a cash deposit at Banco del Ejercito in an amount equal to the value according to the “Table of Vehicle Values for Bonding Companies.”

PETS Only domestic animals (dogs & cats) are permitted into Mexico. You need to carry a copy of your pet’s current rabies vaccination certificate as you may be asked for it as you cross the Mexicoborder. has many stray animals roaming the streets so please keep an eye on your pet. Many pets are lost in Rocky Point each year due to surroundingsunfamiliarand firework noise. If your animal is lost while visiting Rocky Point, we have found the best thing to do is scour the area where he/she was last seen. You can also pass out flyers to taxi drivers and water truck delivery men and post them all over town. Putting an announcement on the local AM and FM radio stations are also a good idea. Be sure you have a collar and tag on your animal as well as a current photo. Contrary to popular belief, your pet is not welcome at most establishments, especially where food is served. Please check with the staff before bringing your pet inside as the business can be fined for health violations.

A few weeks later when I arrived at the Club Jessica was standing at the front of the class facing the other students. The bookearlyopenproceededme,athatannouncedteachershehadsurpriseforandJessicatoasmallreaderandreadit
We started this program in 2016 supporting 72 students from kindergarten through high school. That first year we thought that we would only have to provide our younger students with the resources they needed to be able to begin the school year—primarily a backpack full of required school supplies. However, we soon began to learn about the many barriers that would keep these younger students from succeeding in the classroom. Some of these barriers included a lack of food in the home, no transportation, lack of access to medical care leading to excessive absences, and more. We also learned that many of these young students had nobody in their home to provide them with the ongoing academic support and resources needed to succeed in school.So,in year two we opened our first homework club. This club was staffed by a teacher and teaching assistant who provided our grade school students with the daily academic resources and support they needed to succeed in the classroom. During my early visits to this first club, I had an experience that left me in awe of the impact these clubs could have on the kids we serve.

aloud to all of us. As soon as she finished reading all the kids jumped up and cheered for her and when I glanced at the teacher, she had tears streaming down her face. Jessica then ran up to me, gave me a big hug and said “Tia Katy, yo soy inteligente!” (I am smart)—and that is when my tears started! I will never forget that moment and it is one that I think of often. This experience showed me what is possible when we make a relatively small investment in providing kids with the consistent academic resources and support not available in their homes. It is hard to believe that today we support more than 800 students and operate five homework clubs throughout the community. I am so grateful to my local team and our many supporters on both sides of the border who have joined us in committing to providing a path out of poverty through education for so many young people. I am also very excited to share that this next school year we will be offering the opportunity for volunteers from the U.S. help teach English at one of our homework clubs on Saturdays. Most of our renters are awesome. We love to host you at our condos and want you to have the best time and enjoy everything that our town has to offer. We love to give our recommendations and insights on yummy eats and fun activities. It’s always a great feeling when we can help someone have a memorable vacation and want to comeAndback.yet, you sense that there may be a “however” in the above statement.Iam thinking I may need to update my Airbnb listing description with a few additional rules. The following should go without saying, but unfortunately all these things have actually happened, so maybe they need to be addressed…Pleasedonot use the common rooftop areas for sex parties, it really upsets the neighbors. It’s possibly also illegal, but I’m not sure of the public indecency laws in Mexico. Oh, and when you get caught by a neighbor, although it’s very generous of you to invite them to join, not everyone likes that kind of thing.

When it comes to writing reviews, please be as kind as possible. If there was some minor inconvenience, but your host made up for it, don’t leave a bad review. It’s better to not leave a review than leave a bad review; kind of like if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. As far as Airbnb is concerned, anything below 4-stars is a bad review and if you get a few 3-star reviews, they can pull your listing. My advice as a host is, if you feel you cannot leave a 4- or 5-star review, contact your host privately, and don’t leave a review.

If you get your freak on inside the condo, fantastic, I’m happy you had a great time, but it is inconsiderate to leave things like your condom and underwear in the sheets, that’s why we have a trash can.
Inevitably it seems the majority of issues occur between 10pm to 6am, (when I am asleep). One Airbnb I stayed at plainly stated: “We are a small family-run business, so we don't have someone awake 24-hours. If you have an urgent need or issue between the hours of 10pm and 8am, please call.
If you break something, like say, the sliding glass door, please don’t try to pretend it was like that when you got there and tell me the broken glass is safety hazard, and then proceed to do complete 100-point home inspection pointing out every minor flaw in the condo. It’s just rude and I’m still going to charge you for breaking the glass. Aside from these things, I do love my job hosting guests, and I hope you have an amazing vacation, and will accommodate anything within reason to make your stay enjoyable! Love it or hate it, Airbnb is a significant part of traveling today. When I travel, I also use Airbnb as a guest because you truly get unique experiences. Some things to consider as a guest. You are not renting a room at a hotel. Your host is most likely a small business with one, two, or maybe a handful of properties. And like any small family-owned business, there are going to be unforeseen issues.
