‘You’ll be exposed to Christian values’ Rocky Mount Family Medical Center was established in 1983 by Dr. Richard Michal. After having interviewed at several other established practices, he decided to open his own practice so that he would have control over the Christian environment that he wanted to establish and to be able to pray with his patients. In 1994, Dr. Mark Abel, also a Christian provider, joined the practice and became half owner. “Being run by Christians does not mean that you have to be a Christian to either be a patient here or work here, but it does mean that you will be exposed to Christian values,” said Amanda Bell, Customer Service and Marketing Manager. When patients enter the waiting room, the first indication that there is something different about this practice is the Contemporary Christian music playing in the background. RMFMC’s mission statement is: Caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of patients and each other with excellence, consistency, grace and respect. “Every member of our staff is actually excited about coming to work, and it shows in their interactions with the patients and with each other,” Bell said. “Our goal is to ensure that patients have a pleasant, memorable experience in their interactions with us, whether it is on the phone, in a treatment room, at the check-out desk or in the parking lot. We want them to know that we are here to serve God and to serve them, that they are important to us and that we consider them part of our family,” Bell

said. The practice has evolved to keep up with the constant changes in healthcare and technology. After moving from Noell Lane to a new, larger facility at 804 English Road in 2001, new Radiology and Laboratory Departments were added for their patients’ convenience. RMFMC was one of the first practices in Rocky Mount to offer electronic health records -something considered essential in today’s healthcare field. Currently the practice has eleven board certified providers and a support staff of over fifty. In addition to extensive, certified radiology services and a complete, fully accredited lab, they offer complete family care, women’s health care and a coagulation clinic. Diabetes education classes are held on the first Tuesday of each month and are open to the public. RMFMC is active in the com-

munity and world outreach. The providers take several mission trips both in the US and abroad every year. They also spend time at the Tar River Missions Clinic to provide healthcare to those without insurance. RMFMC is very involved in the Rocky Mount Chamber and was named the 2012 Chamber Small Business of the Year. They are also involved in Rocky Mount Business Builders and the Women’s Professional Networking Group as well as Relay for Life and the American Heart Walk. The practice has been awarded several People’s Choice Awards from the Rocky Mount Telegram, including Dr. Michal being awarded Best Physician in 2012 and tied for 1st place in 2013. In 2012, his nurse, Frankie Williams, was voted Best Nurse and was 2nd place in 2013. In 2011, RMFMC received

the prestigious Patient-Centered Medical Home Certification. Currently they are the only office in Rocky Mount with it. To receive this, they went through an extensive process of proving that they are meeting and exceeding standards of care from the time the patient first needs an appointment to after the visit. Special recognition has also been awarded for their care for heart/stroke patients and diabetes patients. RMFMC now offers a patient portal which allows patients to communicate directly with the office and communicate with their provider electronically. Treanor Chiropractic Wellness Center As a 25 year old young man, Tim Treanor was an electrician. While on the job, he took a bad fall, leaving him with extensive nerve damage on his right side, which meant that he could not stand or walk upright. After six months of seeking help from various specialists and physical therapy with no relief, he was ready to go on disability. In a last ditch effort to find relief, Treanor reluctantly went to see a friend who was a chiropractor. Ultimately, that decision gave him his life back. This was the catalyst for him to change careers and go to chiropractic school in order to help others regain their lives the way he did. His goal was and still is to not only reduce and remove the pain but to help patients establish new patterns of health and life long wellness so that they can reach their fullest potential. Today, Treanor is a chiropractic physician who has been practicing in Rocky Mount for the past 17 years. In order for him to ensure that he was educating his patients the way he wanted and to create the healing environment that he envisioned, he opened his own practice last year at 4161 Capital Drive. He is particularly proud of the unique, open layout of his office, which allows for better patient flow and optimal patient care. Through a complete physical, chiropractic, orthopedic, neurologic and radiographic assessment, he will get to the root of which subluxation or joint fixations are causing the problems and create a comprehensive plan to proceed. Treanor says that even patients who have previously had back surgery can be adjusted safely and effectively. Subluxation is a misalignment of the spine which creates irritation and interruption to the normal flow from the nerves. It creates inflammation and reduction in circulation and causes toxicity within joints which ultimately causes decay. When there is reduced nerve function, the body is unable to use its natural

ability to heal itself. This can affect any and all parts of the body and can sometimes be a matter of life and death. One of Treanor’s goals is to educate the public about the difference between Casual Care and Corrective Care. Casual Care is when the patient comes in with pain and receives treatment just until the pain is gone. They return when they

have another new issue or a relapse of the old one. Casual Care merely puts a bandaid on the problem and does not allow enough time to effect the root of the problem. Treanor explains that when the patient is not in pain anymore, they go back to doing all of the things that caused the pain in the first place. What they don’t understand is that, even though their pain is gone, the problem has not been fully corrected. Corrective Care, on the other hand, extends treatment into a wellness phase which allows more complete and longlasting healing and optimal health once the patient goes back to their normal daily activities. Performing spinal adjustments over a period of time to correct subluxation allows the nerves to regenerate and heal itself and allow the patient “to live a life where they are not just existing from pain episode to pain episode and missing time from work, time from their family and time with their sweetheart,” Treanor said. Eastern North Carolina Medical Group Say the words Eastern NC Medical Group to anyone from Rocky Mount and the immediate thought that usually comes to mind is Dr. Crocker, a wellknown and highly respected physician who has been practicing in Rocky Mount since 1975. In 2000, he opened his own practice specializing in Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology. Today, ENCMG operates five satellite locations including Wilson, Zebulon, Louisburg, Nashville and Highway 97 in South Rocky Mount. They have privileges with Nash Health Care Systems, Franklin Regional Hospital, Life Care Hospital, Heritage Hospital, and Wilson Medical Center, and see patients in virtually all of the nursing homes. ENCMG offers care in the areas of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Oncology, Critical Care, Pulmonology and Gastroenterology. They have a lab where patients can have their blood drawn. They also administer travel vaccines for patient’s convenience, as well as offer x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and nuclear stress tests in the office. With three full-time providers, the Nashville office is the busiest office of all the satellite locations. One of the physicians at the Nashville office, Dr. Shandal Emanuel, is double Board Certified in Internal Medicine and as a Pediatric Internist specializing in Pediatric Mental Health issues such as bi-polar disorders, ADHD and depression. children presenting to the ER in psychiatric crisis until they can be placed in an inpatient mental health facility, which can often take a few days. She is also the Medical Director for the Nash County Health Dept. After graduation from ECU medical school, Dr. Emanuel joined ENCMG in 2005 at the main Rocky Mount office. A year later she was sent to the Nashville office and never looked back. Dr. Emanuel says that she enjoys the challenges of all of her patients, but she particularly enjoys working with children. “I treat some very sick, challenging children,” Dr. Emanuel said. “There is a growing trend of children with adult diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, sleep

apnea, morbid obesity, hypertension and hypothyroidism,” she said. The children with these conditions present a unique treatment challenge in that the medications used to treat adults with these conditions are not formulated for children. Drug companies have begun to address this issue, but there is still a long way to go. Dr. Emanuel is a member of the Lumbee tribe of Native American Indians, which is the largest Native American tribe East of the Mississippi. She was born in Lumberton, NC and reared in Durham, NC. She is very active with the local tribes and treats several patients from the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe in Hollister,

NC and supports their annual pow-wow. Dr. Emanuel won the 2011 Reader’s Choice award for the Best Doctor from the Rocky Mount Telegram. The staff at the Nashville office is a very tight-knit group. They work as a team in the office and are family outside the office. They are all friends that do several social activities together throughout the year including a girl’s weekend at Myrtle Beach. Dr. Emanuel holds an annual pool party at her home for the staff, drug reps, patients and their families. Dr. Emanuel takes pride in the fact that, even though it is a very busy practice, the Nashville office is very familycentered. Langellotti, O.D. and Associates, five licensed optometric professionals at three locations in Rocky Mount, Wilson and Raleigh provide primary eye care services for all ages, which includes a complete eye exam that analyzes eye health and vision function. In addition to eye exams and vision testing, their team provides state-of-the-art testing for glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, allowing them to catch changes in the earliest stages. They offer pre- and post-operative care for LASIK, cataracts, and glaucoma. They will also see patients on an emergency basis

in the case of an eye injury or infection. They take even routine eye exams very seriously. During a yearly or bi-yearly examination, their patients will receive a patient history review, a series of vision and eye tests, assessments of eye focusing and movement, and a thorough eye health evaluation. Their optometrists will discuss any additional testing that may be required to diagnose an eye disease or condition. Dr. Langellotti says that often a patient will come in with complaints of blurry vision or headaches and believe that they simply need their prescription changed. But after a thorough examination and review of their medical records including their medications, it is found that the source of their complaints is actually from a medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes which requires intervention by their primary care provider. Dr. Langellotti recalls that recently a patient came in with similar complaints. After having done a thorough exam and taking his blood pressure in the office, the patient was found to have a blood pressure so high that it could not register on the machine. This patient was immediately sent to the Emergency Room. Subsequently, he spent 2 days in intensive care. “That patient could have had a massive stroke and died had we not looked beyond the blurry vision to find out the source,” Dr. Langellotti said.
