A Farmers Market for the Rockaways

RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) is ramping up for its second season of Rockaway Market Street @ Beach 60th, in response to years of hearing from folks wanting their own outdoor farmers market on the peninsula. The Rockaways consist of eleven neighborhoods with over 125,000 residents and significant levels of food insecurity, particularly in Far Rockaway, Edgemere, and Hammels.

With limited access to fresh vegetables and healthy food options, a market venue for local farmers, food producers, and artisans offer job opportunities for people and a place to bring neighbors together with the goal of supporting the health and wellness of our community!

This year, the farmers market will operate on Saturdays,

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., from June 10 through October 28. Live musicians will complement the celebratory vibe under the elevated A train tracks at Beach 60th Street.

Returning vendors include Rockaway Drinks, Blacksmith’s

Breads, Edgemere Farm, Mushroom Queens, Rockaway Microgreens, and Saratoga Peanut Butter Company. Those interested in joining should go to riserockaway.org and click on Programs, Community, and Rockaway Market Street.

Add the chicken and toss until fully coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

• 4 boneless skinless, chicken thighs

• 1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard

• ½ cup balsamic vinegar

• ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

• 2 tablespoons rosemary

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• Salt and pepper to taste (I used sea salt)

Put chicken and remaining marinade on a lined baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes until chicken is no longer pink. Serve and enjoy! Find

Directions: Combine the mustard, balsamic, garlic, rosemary, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Pour into a zip lock bag or plastic container.

On Saturday, April 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to the Beach 108th hockey rink for the 100th Precinct’s Easter egg hunt. Bring a basket to collect treats, meet the Easter bunny and more. Recommended for ages 12 and under.

On Sunday, April 9 at 11 a.m., House on the Rock Church is hosting Easter on the Boardwalk at Beach 94th Street. Join in the plaza for live music, encouraging words, an Easter egg roll for the kids and free candy for all.

On Tuesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for a guided walk around one of the trails and learn what it takes to become a Jr. Ranger! Children will use their senses to explore. Program followed by an official Jr. Ranger “swearing-in” ceremony. This is an all-weather walk, so dress for the conditions. Space is limited. On Tuesday, April 11 at 7:15 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for CB14’s next monthly meeting. Sign up before the meeting for public speaking.

On Mondays at 11 a.m., head to the RISE Center (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join Ann Fosteris’ Fitness to You class. Masks required inside RISE.

On Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., certified yoga instructor Ruth Graves offers a FREE chair yoga class at RISE (5803 Rockaway Beach Blvd.). Beginners to seasoned practitioners--and everyone in between--are invited. Masks are required inside RISE.

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head to Seaside Library (116-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join for a total body, non-contact workout fit for all levels. Punch, hook, and kick to motivating, high-energy music that progress into heart-pumping combinations. Through April 1.
