Community Board 14 March Meeting Recap By Katie McFadden

It was a short and sweet gathering at the Knights of Columbus for the March Community Board 14 (CB 14) meeting on Tuesday. On the agenda: a construction update on the Rockaway Beach Hotel, the Rockaway Business Alliance’s plans for community events, safety issues within the 101st Precinct and more. CB 14 Chair Dolores Orr kicked off the night announcing hopes for future meetings with the Parks Department to explain the impact of piping plovers and why they cause beaches to be closed, and a Youth Services Committee meeting with the Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) to connect youth with potential job openings. Orr also spoke about the budget for the NYPD in Queens, giving the 100th Precinct a plug for the lowest crime rate out of all Queens precincts for 20162017, with the 101st coming in fourth out of 16 Queens pre-

cincts. Deputy Inspector Janice Holmes, of the 100th Precinct, then provided some updates on the community. She briefly spoke about the robbery that took place at Carvel on March 9, saying the suspect, who had robbed another store in Brooklyn earlier that day, was identified and they’re searching for him. She also warned about another recent robbery spree within south Queens and Nassau County, in which pharmacies have become a specific target. Orr then spoke more about the Borough Board Expense and Capital Priorities. She pointed out that out of all the boroughs, the Queens Community Boards’ budget is lower than in other boroughs. She also spoke about the budget for some continuing capital projects like the reconstruction of Cross Bay Boulevard and raising streets in Broad Channel, installing storm sewers on the main street on the west end of the peninsula, from Beach 169th to Beach 222nd Street,

installing safety fences along Seagirt Boulevard so people can’t cross in the middle of the street, replacing the bulkhead at all street ends, adding check valves and tide gates on storm water outfalls across the district, and more. Some new expense projects that may or may not be feasible include designing and constructing storm sewers at several points in Far Rockaway, upgrading the Rockaway Treatment Plant, having more Parks maintenance crewmembers in the summer, installing two-hour muni-meters along Mott Avenue and more. She also spoke about the expense for education, saying that Queens schools have the lowest per pupil spending despite 108.11 percent of seats being filled within Queens schools, while other boroughs are far below capacity. District Manager Jon Gaska reminded people that if there are streets on the peninsula that need to be repaved, to contact him as soon as possible. The street must be in bad shape

Also, he gave a reminder that anyone looking for a street activity permit for a block party or other event, must give 90 days notice to the Mayor’s Office and must have a petition from at least 70 percent of the residents on the block that support the event. He also said that the expansion of the Joseph P. Addabbo Health Center will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on April 10. The Center is undergoing a 22,000 square-foot expansion that will more than double its space. The meeting was then open for public speaking, which 10 people signed up for. First to speak, Far Rockaway resident Gordon Williams talked about supporting a petition for a dog park in Far Rockaway. Lew Simon spoke about helping residents with post office problems and urged people to contact him if they need help. Pigs and Bananas

A perfectly good cocktail hour was almost ruined for me by a banana. I was at a couple of dress-up affairs recently and like any experienced, self-respecting degenerate looking to get his money’s worth, I attacked the cocktail hour as if that were the main event. If I were the President of the United States, I’d have pigs in a blanket at State Dinners. Talk about diplomacy — who doesn’t like pigs? (Don’t go all poly-sci on me and tell me that pigs in a blanket would be an insult to some. I’m just trying to make a point here). Cocktail hours are the makeor-break of any affair. And all the better if they last more than an hour. You got your pigs, your cold drinks, everyone’s saying hello to each oth-

er, everybody’s psyched for a good time. It’s to ok interrupt — hold on, there’s a plate of Swedish meatballs passing by and you gotta grab one before they’re gone. The biggest challenge is balancing a bunch of little plates while holding a cocktail. Before you know it, the plates are empty and you’ve gotta find a place to dump them because you don’t want to look like a pig without a blanket. As you look around for a place to dump and run, you curse because you’re still holding them as a waiter passes with toast and salmon and some other stuff you can’t identify but looks good. The fastest hour in town is the cocktail hour. It’s like those old supermarket sweepstakes challenges. You get to keep whatever you can put in the wagon in five minutes. The pressure is brutal. You’ve got work to do. But, of course, it’s the kind of work you love. Eat, drink, mingle, laugh

with old friends. Repeat. The countdown is in your head though. It’s going to wrap up before you've had a chance to get some of those mozzarella sticks or those potato things. Damn, they should just keep this going. In a few minutes, everybody’s gonna be relegated to tables. You hope the music is going to be good. And not too loud. The last minute of cocktail hour has you wondering if you’re going to be seated too close to the speakers. You’re having such a good time, why are they stopping it?! And what’s ahead? The usual choice of prime rib, filet of sole, or chicken. You’ll be at a table where maybe you can hear the person next to you but probably not across the table. And, of course, there’ll be speeches. Scientific studies have shown that 94 percent of speeches are a buzzkill. As soon as somebody steps to the podium, you hope those cocktail hour drinks kick in and

give you no choice but to visit the restroom. You just hope everyone else doesn’t have the same plan. Sometimes you’re surprised, and the main event beats the cocktail hour. I’m pretty sure it’s about a 70-30 split in favor of the cocktail hour. But anything could sway things. Like bananas. At one of these particular cocktail hours, I noticed a very ornate fruit arrangement you could help yourself to. But then, I noticed it included small bunches of bananas. I’m pretty sure no one has ever peeled and eaten a banana at a cocktail party. But I worry. I’m afraid the cocktail hour is gonna turn healthy. I think I hear someone say “I’m not gonna have the pigs in a blanket. I’m gonna have a banana.” I’m like, what the — but someone tells me to take it easy. She said, “Banana Daiquiri.” I’m not fully convinced. Ok, but if I see any raisin bran I’m starting a riot.

pital Emergency Department should be complete by April. A Pre-K for all community outreach specialist reminded the audience that 3K is now available at local public schools and the last day to apply for Pre-K is March 30, and 3K is May 11. There will be an info session at Arverne Library and anyone with questions about either program are advised to call 212-6378031. Musicians, Dan Klohe of Solshyne and Tim Farrell of 3 Sheets to the Wind, spoke about rumors that a group of residents are trying to stop live music on the boardwalk. They spoke about the benefits of live music in Rockaway and encouraged any naysayers to come out and experience it for themselves and have an open conversation about their issues. A representative from Urban Upbound said there will be a job fair at Ocean Bay Community Center (57-10 Beach Channel Drive) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those interested must wear business attire and

bring a resume. Two representatives spoke about a proposal for a new project-based charter high school in Far Rockaway by 2020. For more information, see www.ourlegacyacademy.org. Others spoke about encouraging solar energy for homeowners and addressing failing schools in the community. After public speaking, representatives from the construction team of the Rockaway Beach Hotel on Beach 108th, were on hand to provide updates on the project. They said that the design is complete and the site has been cleared and demolished. Foundation work has begun. Some areas were found to be contaminated, but these concerns were removed. They’re now at a stage where watering wells are being created low down so that the site can have underground parking. The foundation work will continue on through June and July. After that, work will begin on the first floor of the six-story building. The façade work will continue until the end of the year. The first half of 2019 will include mechanical and plumbing work

and the interior will be finished in the second half of 2019. The hope is to finish at the end of 2019 and prepare for a soft opening in the first quarter of 2020, with the hotel fully-operational by spring 2020. They will continue to attend community board meetings to provide further updates. Some expressed concern about a recent gas leak connected to the project’s construction, which the reps admitted they miscalculated where the gas line was and said precautions are being taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again. The Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) was on hand to speak about a Department of Transportation-sponsored event, Weekend Walks, with the goal of making streets pedestrian friendly. Last year’s Rock-aBlock events in the Beach 90s were a success, so RBA is hoping to bring such an event to Beach 116th sometime in May. Permits from the city is still required, but the Community Board chose to show its support. The Parks & Public Safety Committee provided its notes

on a meeting they held with the 101st Precinct. The committee met with Captain Tavalaro because of the recent violent crime taking place within the 101st Precinct, including the murder of two teens. The captain said that the shootings were gang-related and that it is believed there are more than 400 gang members on the peninsula. Some suggested a gun buyback program, but from past experience, these types of events were not successful as gang members weren’t the ones to turn in weapons. Another suggestion brought up was to copy a program in California, in which there is a community football or basketball league with two-hour mandatory tutoring through the Board of Education. Each school in Far Rockaway would have a team so kids from around the community can get to know each other in a positive way. The committee also requested a summer detail with more officers at the Beach 17th park, which the Community Board unanimously voted in favor for.

Nat Geo has been around a bit, so that ain’t too shabby. ***** The shady parking lot operation that ran long-term parking to JFK airport has beat it out of town. Soon after The Rockaway Times started asking about what they were doing on city-owned property, they started packing their bags. Anyone driving along Beach Channel Drive and Beach 80th Street couldn’t help but notice all the signs for JFK Parking. All but one

of the signs are gone. That sign will probably be there for years, just like the Marina sign that says, "Coming Soon," which has been there for more than 10 years. ***** St. John’s Hospital continues to make great strides under the leadership of Jerry Walsh. The hospital will need to step up its performance as a new medical center on Beach 105th Street will soon open. We’ve invited Mr. Walsh to write a monthly column hoping he’ll use the opportunity to put focus on the positive things happening at the hospital. Last summer, the lightbulb went off in her head; ten months later, her “Everything Rockaway Beach” downloadable app is on our phones. The idea came to Rachel Sito, app developer and Rockaway native, when she noticed a pattern emerge at the Beach Channel Drive ferry dock. When the ferry riders arrived from their homes in Manhattan and

Brooklyn, she recalls how many stood around for a bit, looking bewildered, taking a moment to get their bearings before making the trek up to the ocean. “They really didn’t know where to go,” she said. Watching the same scenario day after day, ferry after ferry, and confused visitor after confused visitor, Sito was inspired. “We’re more than just the beach,” she said, and knowing firsthand all that Rockaway has to offer, she thought, “we need to show them what we've got!” So the law student by day, business entrepreneur by night, decided to fix what was missing, and her app, “Everything Rockaway Beach” was born. She describes “Everything Rockaway Beach” as the one stop to finding everything on the peninsula. As a local, she knew that accessing Rockaway events could sometimes be hard to do. “It was frustrating

not having one place to find all that’s going on here,” she said. “Some events were only posted on bulletin boards,” she said. “Not too effective at getting the word out.” Welcome to the 21st century. Pull out your phone and voila´. If you want to see a band, check the app. Local events? The app has that too, along with shopping, bars and restaurants all mapped out. Need to cool off with a cocktail? Finding specials are just a click away. “Everything Rockaway Beach” has you covered. “It’s all in one place now and it’s a good way to connect the neighborhood,” Sito said. The app’s front end is user-friendly and the drop down menu houses extras like the ferry schedule and the ability to post photos on the gallery section, which she admits might be her favorite feature. “I want it to be interactive. To connect our visitors and locals with all that’s hap-

And with ridership expected to increase this year, Sito sees promise that her app will steer more customers to local businesses. Still in its infancy, “Everything Rockaway Beach” is already grabbing attention. Sito spent months schlepping from door-todoor, to bars and restaurants to ask them to be part of the app. Now, at only a few weeks old, she says there’s a list of shop owners clamoring to be included. “The support has been amazing so far and everyone just seems to think it’s a great idea, which is really exciting,” Sito said. have reached out and voiced their congratulations, but the best, she says, was when a random guy in a Breezy store recognized her logo on her hoodie and yelled out, “ Hey, I know you. You’re the app girl!” “That,” she says, “was an awesome feeling.” “Everything Rockaway Beach” app is now available in the app store for iPhone and the Google Play Store for Android. With the official celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, the New York State Senate Education Committee approved legislation (S.1933) co-sponsored by NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. to allow New York City schools to recognize March 17 as an official holiday. “Areas of my Senate district encompassing the Rockaway Peninsula have been referred to as the ‘Irish Riviera,’ and I can attest that from Breezy Point and throughout the communities on the peninsula, the grand tradition of Irish cultural pride is an integral part of family life,” Addabbo said. “We need only to look at these gatherings – which draw enormous crowds every year and contribute significantly to our local economies – to know that just about everyone is a little bit Irish in New York City this time of year,” he said. “I hope our educational community will soon be able to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day as a school holiday and officially join in celebrating our City’s many ties with the Emerald Isle.” The legislation will now go to the full State Senate for consideration.

Far Rockaway Walks Out Story and Photos by Katie McFadden

On Wednesday, March 14, one month since 17 young lives were senselessly taken in a mass shooting in Parkland, Fla., students across the country walked out of their schools at 10 a.m. for a 17-minute period to remember those who were killed and to call for an end to gun violence. When the bell rang at 9:52 a.m. at the Far Rockaway High School Educational Campus, some students from the four schools within the building, picked up their books, left their classrooms, and walked out of the building and proceeded to the football field to support the peaceful protest’s nationwide message, and to call for action in their own community in response to the murders of two local teens by teens this year. Before the walkout, there was some chatter around the school that staff would try to prevent more students from leaving, but they were determined to stand for their cause. As a few students gathered on the field before 10 a.m, some feared that not many would be joining them. But soon the students started to trickle on to the field. A large group took over the field and were asked to take a knee. A moment of silence was held first for the students who were killed in the shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, just a month before. And then another moment of silence was held to remember two teens killed by other teens with guns, in their own neighborhood—Trevor Rhudd and Youssef Soliman. Then the students spoke about their reasons for walking out of school on that Wednesday morning. For Queen Richardson, a Far Rockaway resident and student of the Academy of Medical Technology, there was deep motivation to not only help organize the local walkout with a group of her peers, but to participate. “I was in Connecticut at the time of the Sandy Hook shooting and I had cousins there. We didn’t go to Sandy Hook, but we started doing drills at our

schools and it made me think, what would’ve happened if it were my little cousins that were the ones that got killed. After that, I came back to Far Rockaway and in the middle of the night, I would hear gunshots and would have to hide in my own house. One day, when I was 15, my best friends and I were near this pizza shop and these two guys got into an argument at the pizza shop and my best friend was about to walk out the door, but I told her to wait for me. If I had allowed her to walk outside, she would’ve been killed because those two guys started shooting in front of the store. Earlier this year, my friend, Trevor Rhudd, was shot in the staircase of his building and they still haven’t found the killer. Not even a month later, another student in our school, Youssef, was murdered outside in the Beach 40s,” Richardson said. “This walkout is about

us speaking for the kids that didn’t get a chance to speak for themselves and live their lives. That could’ve been me. If it happened to me, I would want someone to speak up for me.” TJ, a student from the Queens High School for Information, Research and Technology (QIRT), spoke about wanting to see his peers make good choices. “I feel that gun violence has a big impact on Far Rock. So many people turn to the street and when you turn to the streets, it can only go two ways. Either you’re in jail or you’re dead. I know you guys have younger siblings and you don’t want to see them get involved in gun violence. They look up to everything you do. Together, we can have a big impact on our community if we try,” he said. Theresa, another QIRT student, spoke on behalf of the students in Parkland. “Gun violence is not okay. My cousin

died in the shooting in Florida. When I got the news that day, I came home from school and I was bawling. That was my closest cousin. I can’t see them anymore. I could’ve even fly out for their funeral, but I am going to stand here and do this march for them,” she said. Students at the Far Rockaway Educational Campus weren’t the only ones to participate in the National School Walkout. Students from Scholars’ Academy, Channel View School for Research and others at the Beach Channel Educational Campus, P.S. 183, and even a small group from P.S. 114- The Belle Harbor School, also reportedly participated in the walkout. And we’re sure, they weren’t the only ones on the peninsula. Richardson said the walkout wasn’t about eliminating guns completely, but for calling for change. “The fact that 14- or 15-year-olds can get their hands on guns without anyone stopping them and there being loopholes where you can buy guns from illegal vendors, it's sad you can do that. With the Second Amendment, you have a right to bear arms, but legally. I don’t want to see teens with guns in their hands,” she said. “Seven thousand kids were murdered due to guns since Sandy Hook and no one has done anything. We’re not going to keep quiet anymore. We’re not going to stop until something changes. There are adults that are putting us down for walking out, but they haven’t done anything to change anything, so why can’t we? They think we’re ill-minded children and we don’t know what we’re doing. We do know what we’re doing. We’re pushing and we’re going to keep pushing until something is done.”

Former New York Dolls Rocker Pens Rockaway Jam

From Los Angeles to Tokyo, Steve Conte has toured the world with big name acts, particularly the infamous rock band, the New York Dolls, but he’s never forgotten the city he’s always called home—New York. The rocker was recently inspired to write a song about a little beach town in the big city, our very own, Rockaway. “Tough is life, back on the beach again, just a sunny day. Got no tan, rockin’ my leather man, New York to LA. Surf is up, we’re pounding the pavement, tonight we’re gonna play. Ooooh gimme, gimme Rockaway,” starts the new fun, catchy rock tune, “Gimme Gimme Rockaway” by longtime rocker, Steve Conte.

his first solo album, Steve Conte NYC, released in 2014. And he hasn’t stopped recording despite still touring the world. Although having spent much of his life living in Manhattan, and now the Bronx, Conte’s latest single, “Gimme Gimme Rockaway” is all about the name of a place in Queens. “I never lived in Queens, but I used to play out there at bars in Sunnyside. A lot of the guys from the New York Dolls, like the late Johnny Thunders, grew up in Queens. I’m also familiar with The Ramones, of course, our boys from Forest Hills,” he said. However, Conte admitted that he had never been to Rockaway when the inspiration struck for his song. “The way I write songs, sometimes it comes from a lyric and you write a song around that, and sometimes I just have a chord and melody in my head, but I don’t have the words. I had this great melody floating around in my head for this strong, fun song and at one point, I just started singing Rockaway and it fit well. I didn’t have the gimme, gimme yet, but I started to think about the Ramones,” he said. Some may be familiar with a little Ramones song called,

car, and this just kind of turned into a summertime adult-teenager anthem. Once I knew Rockaway should be in the title, the rest of the song just fell into place and that’s how it happens sometimes,” Conte said. "Gimme Gimme Rockaway" was recorded with Conte on vocals and guitar, drummer Clem Burke of Blondie, bassist Andy Rourke of The Smiths, and D Generation front man Jesse Malin on backup vocals, and released on the label, Wicked Cool Records, owned by Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band guitarist, Steven Van Zandt, in November 2017. The single, which was voted as the “Coolest Song in the World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage Radio, is currently available on digital download sites like iTunes and on pink vinyl. The “A” side of the vinyl record features “Gimme, Gimme Rockaway” and the “B” side features Conte’s cover of Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz.” Limited vinyl copies are available. Filming began in November when the beaches

were cool and quiet, and the video wasn’t released until January of this year. The video, now on YouTube, features some scenes shot in a fantasy nightclub, but some may recognize more familiar spots like Rockaway Freeway, the iconic bus shelters along Shore Front Parkway, the boardwalk, and of course, the beach, where Conte rocks out in a beach chair. “When the Ramones wrote about Rockaway back in the day, they were singing about its great, beautiful beaches, while in the late ‘70s, it was kind of a rundown, rough place,” he said. “When I went to do the video, I got to see that everything is new and beautiful. If only the Ramones were around to see what it’s turned into. It was really cold when I shot the video in November and no one was on the beach, but I had never been to Rockaway before and I thought it was really nice. Far Thoughts Dear Editor: Loved your Boyleing Points last week ("Far Out"). First, calm down, Far Rockaway has always been Far Rockaway, but not always part of New York City. Having been born and lived most of my life in Rockaway, here's a little history lesson. Back in the day, and generations before I was born, Rockaway was not part of New York City but part of the Town of Hempstead, which already had East Rockaway and so it was decided to name part of our peninsula "Far" Rockaway as being far away from the original, East Rockaway.

THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2018 At that time, as I have been told, the peninsula only ran to about Beach 116th Street and everything west of there was fill-in. Now that was probably from the 1600s forward. Once we became part of New York City, the name was never changed. What should it be? I don't know, but from my childhood, Far Rockaway was a destination. It was quite beautiful. Bayswater had many famous people living there in some of the beautiful homes that are still there and Central Avenue was like walking on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. There were beautiful shops and you could purchase almost anything. Hopefully one day Far Rockaway will again be as beautiful as I remember it in my childhood, and no, that was not in the 1600s! Owning guns is a civil liberty since Americans have the right to own private property. Only the most extreme gun-control advocate would argue a complete and total elimination of all firearms, but I need to ask Rick Horan (letter to the editor 3/1) a question: what liberty do you lose when you're not allowed to own an AR-15 or any of its destructive brethren, these legitimate weapons of war? The Second Amendment was written during a time when it took 15 minutes to reload a musket. It was also written by the same people who determined that a black man or woman counted for 3/5ths of a person. The U.S. Constitution has been a remarkably durable document and serves as the benchmark for modern dem-

Both of our organizations seek to improve access to Gateway and provide visitors with a unique, urban park experience.

Improving access to Gateway has long been a pressing issue for a diverse set of stakeholders, as most of the park’s locations are not served by public transportation. The need to improve transportation in these areas of the city has become urgent in recent years, as larger discussions about equality and resiliency have dominated the public sphere. Improving transportation and access to Jamaica Bay will provide better opportunities for outdoor recreation, environmental education, access to the waterfront and open space, and other community benefits. One way to increase access to Jamaica Bay is to run a ferry that would serve both local residents and park visitors, and allow interbay connectivity between Jamaica Bay parks and nearby communities. Today, individuals, non-profit and for-profit organizations, along with other interested parties can help shape the way Gateway is developed in the future and ensure that trans-

Armed Robber Makes Off with Sweet Loot from Carvel By Katie McFadden

A local ice cream store was robbed last week and we’ve got the scoop. An alleged Fudgie the Whale Bandit, brandishing a gun, pulled off a heist at Beach 116th Street’s Carvel in broad daylight on a winter Friday afternoon. A suspect decided to shake things up shortly after Carvel opened on Friday, March 9. According to owner Paul Guarneri, just after noon, a man walked in and ordered a milkshake from the general manager, who was the only employee in the store at the time. “He ordered a shake from her and it seemed like a normal transaction. She started to ring him up for the shake and he simply pulled out a gun and placed it on the counter and calmly asked for the money in the register,” Guarneri said. “The whole thing is on video. I don’t think our manager realized what was happening at first. She was caught off guard. But she opened the cash drawer and gave him what was in there.” According to the NYPD, the

suspect is a black male in his 50s who got away with roughly $400 before fleeing on foot. The NYPD’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information, did not provide an identity to The Rockaway Times. According to Guarneri, after the suspect walked out of the store, the manager locked the door before calling police, who arrived quickly, but the suspect had gotten away before cops could tell him to freeze. However the suspect may have already been on a rocky road as he had robbed another store in Brooklyn earlier that morning. Police were able to identify him quickly and began a search of a building on Beach 115th Street, where it was believed the suspect had barricaded himself. Unfortunately, the suspect was not in the building and as far as Guarneri knows, he’s still on the loose. By that evening, Carvel was back open for business and the general manager who was in the store, has since returned to work. “She hanContinued on page 19

We were told that the NYPD doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have it in their budget to keep something like that going. But in light of this recent incident, it would be nice to see some regular police presence again.â&#x20AC;? Yet Guarneri is optimistic for the future of Beach 116th. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are positive things going on here and a lot of new development coming. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not gonna let this robbery deter us from staying open for business and having a great summer and season,â&#x20AC;? he said. All are encouraged to pay Carvel a visit and show some support. After all, spring is right around the corner. What ever happened to the shake that the suspect ordered? This STEM educational program (for grades Pre-K through 12th grade), provides students with hands-on experiential learning opportunities to foster an appreciation for their natural environment. With this appreciation, we hope to give students agency to explore challenging social and environmental issues happening in their very own neighborhood. Unplugging chargers and appliances when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not using them will save energy as well. Believe it or not, they still use energy when not being used. Turn off the water during washing dishes and teeth brushing. Also, it helps to take shorter showers. There is a lot of energy being used to heat the hot water. Eat food that is grown locally or at least in your region. Not only will it reduce emissions because it will take less transportation to get to you , but you will see fresher results. Eat less beef and dairy. Cheeseburgers are great, not arguing that. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to consider that animal farming causes 18 percent of all greenhouse gases. Sweet and Salty Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure of 140 or greater and a diastolic BP of 90 or greater. Recently, hypertension has been ranked as one of the leading causes of worldwide disability. It is estimated that one billion adults worldwide (25 percent of the population) have hypertension and this number is expected to rise. Traditional advice to those who have an elevated blood pressure has been to reduce dietary salt intake. In general, dietary salt intake is more than six grams (2400 mg) with 95 percent of the global population consuming between 7.5 and 12.5 grams of salt per day.

Recent evidence has begun to cast doubt on the traditional advice to reduce salt intake to lower blood pressure. In India, most people consume about 11 grams of salt per day, but because of the hot, dry climate they may lose six grams a day through sweating. Hypertension is a serious health concern there and accounts for 24 percent of heart disease and 57 percent of all stroke deaths. Despite the Indian government’s efforts to reduce salt intake, the incidence of hypertension continues to rise. Health experts in India have begun to realize that salt may simply come along with added sugars. In other

words, salt may be an “innocent bystander.” Traditional advice here and elsewhere has been to reduce salt intake and increase exercise, yet these two recommendations may be contradictory because exercise or physical work, especially in a warm or hot environment, and a reduced salt diet may increase the risk of heat exhaustion and prostration. Plus, reduced salt intake may predispose a person to have a negative calcium and magnesium balance, which may lead to osteoporosis, hypertension, adverse heart events, arrhythmias, and sudden death. Like in India, recent studies done here suggest that sugar, not salt, is the likely dietary culprit causing hypertension. Many believe that salting food leads to overeating and its related complications. However adding salt to bitter or bland foods, like vegetables or nuts, will probably increase their consumption because salt enhances flavor. In addition, a higher intake of vegetables and nuts leads to reductions in risk

The Rockaway Times of hypertension and heart disease. Salt “appetite” is an evolutionary conserved mechanism that is approximately 100 million years old. It drives us to seek out and obtain salt when we need it. Salt is needed for basic bodily metabolic functions. More and more evidence and studies are pointing to sugar, not salt, as the cause of hypertension and heart disease. Daily consumption of fruit juice (composed mostly of free sugars) is associated with higher blood pressure. Recent controlled studies have shown that a diet high in sugar, as compared to a low-sugar diet, for just a few weeks causes an increase in blood pressure. All this evidence is suggesting that clinicians should advise their hypertensive patients to cut down on the intake of added sugars (sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, starches, and especially bleached [white] rice and flour) and make dietary salt less of an issue. Shedding the Layers As we move forward into spring, we begin to peel off the layers of clothes, shoes, excess weight needed for the cold winter months (at least that’s my excuse for adding some extra weight on my body) and the winter boots. We love seeing the flip-flops and slip-on shoes outside the studio doors. It warms our hearts to feel the sunshine come in the windows and to lower the heat. There is nothing like the fresh air off the water. Ahh, breathing in I feel light, breathing out I am light.

Sometimes we acquire too much clothing in our closets. It happens slowly and surely. The holiday gifts, the special occasion outfits, the sales, etc. Cleaning out and letting go can be really hard especially if an item has a sentimental value. My rule of thumb is if I did not wear it in the last two years, it must go out the door to another home. Sometimes I fail at this because I put the shirt on that I am trying to give away and wear it for a few hours, deciding I am

going to keep it for another year. Not the right thing to do because next year I will be giving it away. There are so many people who could use the clothing in your drawers that you no longer need. How many t-shirts does a person need? Shoes are a big problem. How many pairs of boots do you need? Shoe boots, rain boots, casual boots, fancy boots, low heel and high heel boots. It’s kind of crazy what we think we need. Then they get old and we still keep them in our closets because they are of great quality and it’s hard to give old shoes away. Leon, the shoemaker on Beach 116th Street, may take some of your boots you no longer need and refurbish them. Donate them to him if you can. He is a great guy who fixes all our shoes. I was trying to throw away my favorite boots but instead brought them to Leon to resole and they look brand new. Shedding weight can be the easy part of spring

cleaning. At least it can be with a little willpower and discipline. Eating healthy and exercising is the most important part of the equation. Choosing whole foods and eliminating processed foods is a great start. Lots of vegetables and NO SUGAR. Ok, that is a hard one, so become aware of how much sugar you put into your body and limit your intake. Cut down or eliminate alcohol from your diet. Oh no, I just realized you may be reading this column on St. Patrick’s Day weekend and that could ruin your day! Instead of two glasses of wine, try one. Obviously, the best-case scenario is not to drink alcohol but everyone makes their own choices, including myself. Clean living can make all the difference in the longevity of your life. It not only helps your body feel great, it gives you a clear mind. Shedding the layers is a gift anyone can give themselves.

Pheffer Amato Introduces Legislation to Ease E-ZPass Issues Local elected officials have been helping some residents that have been hit with astronomical fines related to the cashless tolling system on local bridges. Now, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has taken it a step further by introducing legislation to hopefully ease some of these issues. Pheffer Amato recent introduced bill A.10005 that would amend the public authorities’ law to require the MTA to establish a cashless tolling amnesty program and to post that violation fee waiver policy on its website. This piece of legislation was created in light of the cashless tolling system, which has caused thousands of dollars in violations for NYS residents. Specifically, the bill would provide rational, consumer-friendly relief and reform of the MTA's Cashless Toll-

ing System by (1) Enacting toll amnesty for a period of six months; (2) Providing for public disclosure of the current MTA Violation Fee Waiver Policy; and (3) Capping fees for toll charges at no more than twice the original toll charge for the first three months and no more than three times the original toll charge for fees in the four to six month range. “This legislation would demand the MTA to step up to the plate to ease violations for all New Yorkers who have been affected,” Pheffer Amato said. “The past year of constant and crazy high violations has to stop- this is real money coming out of my constituents’ pockets and it must end now.” As of March 7, the bill is in the Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions Committee.

This past Tuesday, March 13, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced in a press release that a Queens County grand jury indicted nine purported members of the Wildmeda Crips Gang for attempting to shoot rival gang members. The long-term investigation uncovered the plots through social media postings and telephone conversations in which the alleged defendants used code words to plan, carry out and then boast about the shootings on social media. The investigation, which was spearheaded by the New York City Police Department’s Gun Violence Suppression Division, Violence Reduction Task Force, and the Queens District Attorney’s Narcotics Investigations Bureau, utilized numerous investigative tools, including reviewing phone conversations of incarcerated subjects and postings on social media pages of gang members. Over the course of the investigation, social media postings and phone conversations allegedly uncovered top-ranking gang members ordering subordinates to kill and/or injure their rivals, carry out physical assaults and acquire weapons to carry out their goal of ridding their territory of rivals. In an effort to elude law enforcement, the gang members used coded words and phrases in their conversations. Among this coded language, they allegedly referenced shootings as “spanked,” “popped his cherry,” “its litt” and “got busy.” Firearms were referred to as a “situation,” “jawn,” “thoty,” “whoopty” and “bitch.” District Attorney Brown said, “The defendants are alleged to have communicated for months about acquiring guns and cars for hits and actually admitted in conversations online to ‘spanking’ and getting ‘busy’ shooting their targets. This indictment is another example of police and pros-

ecutors working together to eliminate gang violence. The defendants now face a lengthy term of incarceration for these alleged acts.” The attempted murders are alleged to have taken place in June 2015, July 2015, December 2015 and July 2016. The nine defendants — all Far Rockaway residents who range in age from 20 to 29 — are alleged to have operated around the Ocean Bay Housing Development between Almeda Avenue and Beach Channel Drive from Beach 51st Street to Beach 54th Street in Far Rockaway. According to Brown, the defendants asserted control with guns, beatings and intimidation. “The defendants are accused of turning neighborhood streets into war zones by acting in concert with one another to carry out targeted hits on their enemies,” said District Attorney Brown. “A long-term investigation, which included deciphering social media postings, allegedly uncovered four separate plots by members of the Wildmeda Crips to kill rival gang members.” According to the 52-count indictment, the DA said that between April 1, 2015, and December 31, 2016, the defendants targeted members of the 70Gs, SOS, Edgemere Bloods, Flammers and any other gang that ventured into what they considered their territory. District Attorney Brown continued, according to the charges, as part of the conspiracy the defendants would allegedly keep incarcerated gang members apprised of activities related to gang business, including acts of violence. It should be noted that an indictment is merely an accusation and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The defendants are awaiting arraignment before Queens Supreme Court Justice Robert Kohm.

National Poison Prevention Week, (NPPW) March 18-24, is a reminder of all the dangers lurking in our pantries, under our sinks and in our medicine cabinets. Last year, our son’s dog Miley Blair, had a close call in our home.

Through some trick of acrobatics, or perhaps sheer persistence, she managed to pull the cake onto the floor and gnaw her way through the hermetically-sealed packaging, devouring more than half of the rum cake before we found her. Chocolate crumbs, still fresh from her kill, hung in the white fur around her snout as she innocently looked up, cocked her head to the side as if to say, “What? Did I do something wrong?” Fortunately, Miley was okay. It turned out the small amount of rum wasn’t harmful because much of the alcohol evaporates during baking; it was the raisins and chocolate that were problematic. Despite what I thought had been a thorough puppy-proofing of the house before her arrival, she still managed to remind us that pets are curious and quick, and that, in combination with a distracted owner, can be dangerous. Foods, drugs, chemicals, bat-

teries, some household plants top the list of the many items that can harm pets. According to National Capital Poison Center at Poison. org, reports of pet poisoning exposures topped 54,019 in 2016. Dr. Katherine Galatis, a doctor of veterinary medicine at The Animal Hospital of the Rockaways, says the most common poisonings in animals are rat poison, antifreeze, raisins, grapes, chocolate, marijuana, chewing gum and any item with xylitol, which surprisingly is now appearing in foods such as peanut butter. Antifreeze, which tastes sweet and is appealing to dogs and cats, is highly poisonous and causes rapid kidney failure. One lick of antifreeze may be enough to cause kidney damage and possible death. Her advice? “Proper storage and disposal of items is key. Storing garbage bins in a cabinet or in a closet is a good idea and always store all cleaning supplies out of reach of animals, keeping them locked away when possible," Galatis says. She also notes that cleaning solutions can cause respiratory harm when inhaled, not just ingested, by animals— especially to birds and reptiles, so be sure there’s always adequate ventilation. “The most important aspect of dealing with toxicities is to address the situation ASAP,” Galatis says. “The sooner you discover the ingestion or suspect possible ingestion, talk with your veterinarian and treat immediately. The body has a higher chance of absorbing the harmful item/chemical the longer it is in the body without treatment. The sooner we can get the animal medical attention, the easier treatment will be as well. There is also a lot of follow up and monitoring associated with these situations that persists beyond immediate medication treatment, since the damage may take time to show itself.” Accidents do happen, but like the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Take some time during NPPW to look around for dangers. Some may be hiding in plain sight, like on a cake plate in the dining room.

Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin By Sharon Feldman

Saw this on Cooktop Cove. It’s pretty tasty. I made a few changes. Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 pork tenderloins, about 2 pounds each in size 1 pound thick cut bacon ¼ cup soy sauce (for less salt, use Tamari) 2/3 cup maple syrup ¼ cup water 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon salt Ground black pepper, to taste Directions: Cut each pork tenderloin in half so you have four pieces. Season evenly with salt and pepper. Wrap each tenderloin with bacon, weaving the bacon as you would a classic apple pie crust.

Tuck bacon ends underneath. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar and water. Brush a 6-quart slow cooker with olive oil. Place bacon wrapped tenderloins into the slow cooker. Brush all the sauce evenly over the pork tenderloins. Cover and cook on low three hours. Optional step: If you want the bacon to be crispy (as I did), remove the tenderloins to a lined baking sheet. Put in a 375 degree oven for 15 minutes or until bacon is crispy. Allow 15 minutes for pork tenderloin to rest before serving. This is an important step in keeping the tenderloin moist.

Local Mothers Press for Progress at World’s Biggest Mama Meet-up By Edil Cuepo

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 600 mothers plus babies stormed the United Nations Headquarters for the World’s Biggest Mama Meetup. For the first time in the history of conferences, crying babies aka future leaders were welcome. My 17-month-old daughter, June Foley, and I were in attendance, among fellow Rockaway residents. Organized by the Women’s International Forum, Mindr Global, and Global Moms Challenge, the event was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations. The underlying theme of the event was “Mothers as Change-makers in Public Life and the Workplace.” The panelists were mothers and well-respected leaders of the U.N. and/or their own organizations, including U.N. Under-Secretary-General Izumi Nakamitsu.

They have championed motherhood and their professional careers focused on saving humans around the world. Ambassador Jan Kickert, Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations and part of the Gender Champions Initiative in the U.N., warmly greeted the attendees while holding his baby daughter. Two of the most powerful statements that hit home with me are: 1) “Don’t apologize for your motherhood. Be bold and unabashed.” – Chrysula Winegar

We are carers, innovators, negotiators and teachers.” – Sarah Lux-Lee We listened in and spoke about how we can make the world better for mothers and how mothers can make this world better. We voiced out the need for longer and paid maternity leave, proper health care for all mothers and babies, and childcare options. We

also talked about equal pay and the existing gender gap in leadership roles in the public and private sectors. The first-of-its-kind meet-up was very informative and highly empowering. It was incredible to witness the will and determination of mothers to press for progress all the while nursing, feeding, and entertaining our minis. When you see 600 unfazed women able to effectively care for their babies and still be an active part of the conversation, you realize how powerful mothers really are. CROM Teens ‘Champ Up’ in Nat’l Muay Thai Rings By Kami-Leigh Agard

After weeks of intensive disciplined training, three local Muay Thai teen fighters from Crom Physical Culture dug deep, fought hard and crushed their opponents in two national Muay Thai fights this month. First up was 14-year-old Triston Mcleod, a student at Channel View School For Research, fighting only his second amateur fight with Friday Night Fights (FNF), NYC's longest-running fight series featuring Muay Thai and regular boxing, scored a unanimous decision win and put on a great exhibition of Muay Thai. Prior to his victory on Friday, March 2, McCleod had already made himself a name as the youngest competitor to compete in FNF, coincidentally the same series in which CROM’s co-owner and coach, Chris Romulo, made a name for himself as an amateur and professional Muay Thai champion. Next were Marcus Laureano, age 15, a student at Scholars'

Academy, and thirteen-yearold Winston Niles, a student at Academy of Medical Technology, who both fought at the American Muay Thai League’s (AMTL) junior competition in Washington, DC, the next day on Saturday, March 3. Laureano, coming off a loss from his amateur debut, faced a challenging opponent who capitalized in the first round. However, fiercely-determined, Laureano then took over in the second and third rounds, fighting hard to the very end, and came out victorious in a nail-biting close battle by pulling off some tactical Muay Thai moves. obliterated his competition, and earned an unassailable TKO victory against a very worthy opponent. According to Romulo, also a motivational speaker, author of memoir, “Champions Uprising,” and a retired, accoladed professional Muay Thai fighter, these teens all faced very unique challenges, but came out as true champions. “Though there were no titles up for grabs, these being preliminary bouts, our CROM teens fought and carried themselves as true champions, showing honor, respect and great sportsmanship. “In a recent talk I gave to students at Scholars’ Academy, I told them, ‘We are all champions within. Sometimes we lose and get knocked down to our knees. But that’s a part of life. How many of you fall down? How many of you get back up? Everybody should have their hands up. There’s already a champion within you. If you ever feel life is getting to you,

the world is getting to you, and your mind and thoughts are getting to you. Simple words — Champ up — The decisive moment when someone declares to stand up, accepts the challenge of life and fights to win.’ This is the mindset I want all of our youth to keep practicing, not just in the Muay Thai ring, but in life,” Romulo said.
