Get Out and Vote in PB Ballot By Kami-Leigh Agard

Rockaway and Broad Channel residents — want to make a difference in your community? Starting this Saturday, March 25, through Sunday, April 2, get out and vote for where you want your taxpayer dollars spent on city-funded projects that will help bring upgrades to local schools and enhance the overall quality of life in Rockaway and Broad Channel. This is Cycle 6 of the NYC Council’s Participatory Budgeting (PBNYC) initiative. Local participating council members across the five boroughs, give at least $1M from their district’s capital discretionary budget for residents to participate in the decision-making of where money should be invested. It’s a year-long process of public meetings, where local council representatives empower residents to make informed decisions on where the money should be spent. Community members discuss local needs and develop proposals to meet these needs. Then, through a public vote, residents then decide which proposals to fund. This year, you can vote for as many as five of your favorite PBNYC project proposals on your district’s ballot. Each participating councilmember guarantees funding for the projects that receive the most

votes, until their Participatory Budgeting (PB) funding runs out. This is the sixth year, City Councilman Eric Ulrich, who represents District 32 local neighborhoods: Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Howard Beach, Neponsit, Ozone Park, Rockaway Park, Roxbury and Seaside, is participating. According to Robby Schwach, Deputy Chief of Staff for Ulrich, they have allocated $1.5M of their budget for the district’s Rockaway and Broad Channel neighborhoods. One million dollars for the west end of Rockaway and about half a million for Broad Channel. “We made both a separate allocation and ballot for Broad Channel,” Schwach said. “It is more fair for Broad Channel to have a separate process because their needs are different from the west end of the peninsula. They need funding for their parks and overall uplifts for their community. “This is the sixth year our district is participating in this process. PB is not a new phenomenon. It was first developed in Brazil in the late 1980s. And as of 2015, over 1,500 instances of PB have been implemented across the five continents. It’s great because instead of the elected officials deciding where residents’ tax money is being spent, now the entire

community gets to decide. In District 32, children over the age of 14 also get the right to vote,” Schwach said. This is the third year, City Councilman Donovan Richards, who represents District 31 Rockaway neighborhoods: Arverne, Edgemere and Far Rockaway, is participating. For Cycle 6, Donovan has increased his district’s PB pot from $1M to $2M, which also includes funding for neighborhoods outside of Rockaway: Laurelton, Rosedale and Springfield Gardens. According to a statement released by Donovan’s office, “Last year, PB was a huge success in the Rockaways as we brought in more than 3,000 votes resulting in some big improvements for Far Rockaway High School. This year, I look forward to bringing PB back to both Southeast Queens and the Rockaways with $2 million dedicated to projects democratically chosen by the community. This process is an excellent way for residents to take part in the budget decisions in their neighborhoods and have a direct impact on deciding what improvements will best serve the community. We hope to see even more Rockaway residents getting civically-engaged this year to put their fingerprint on their community's future. PB is civic and community engagement at its finest. It helps to teach our youth about the excitement of getting involved in the democratic process at an early age.” See list of District 32 and District 31 projects below. Note that you can vote only once in 2017. Voting results will be announced on April 3, 2017. District 32: You can vote for up to four projects. 1 — Amenities for new playground planned for P.S. 256 & P.S./M.S. 114 on Beach 135th Street/ Cronston Avenue. Making Way for a New Hotel 377 BEACH 92ND ST, ROCKAWAY BEACH

Tubridy’s Bar as seen in the film No Looking Back. By Katie McFadden

Out with the old and in with the new. After a couple decades of sitting idle, the old Tubridy building on Beach 109th Street is coming down, to make way for a new Tubridy-owned venture. The demolition process for Tubridy’s Bar began on Monday, March 20, to make way for the future Rockaway Beach Hotel. It’s the end of an era for what was once Tubridy’s Bar. The building has long been neglected, but it had seen better days. Tubridy’s Bar was fully functional since the ‘70’s, until it closed in 1989, and thereafter only opened on specials occasions, like during the old Irish Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Parade, for a few years. Before that, it was Hugh McNulty’s, a bar and hotel owned by Hugh McNulty, of Ireland. It had been McNulty’s since at

least the 1930s. The building also spent some time known as Fennessy’s. Aerial photos show the building itself had been there at least since the 1920s. The demolition is the beginning of a new era, that of the Rockaway Beach Hotel. A six-story, 61-room boutique hotel, developed by In Good Company Hospitality and JBS Project Management, is coming to the block. It will take over the space that was occupied by Tubridy’s, as well as Dalton’s Bar and Grill, which was bought out and closed in October 2016. Permits are still in the process of being obtained for the demolition of Daltons. The Tubridy-owned hotel to come will have a bar and restaurant, a pool, and underground parking. It is too early to tell when the hotel will be complete.

Random Thoughts It’s not mine. I’m holding it for a friend. It’s hard to believe that this one is still being used by kids today. Parents find the usual contraband - drugs, alcohol, birth control, pornography, cigarettes (trying to think what else contraband would cover…), and the best the kid can come up with is the excuse that’s been used since Cain and Abel? Has a kid ever asked another kid to hold something? Ever? Hey buddy, hold this bag of weed for me. I don’t want my parents to find it.

The other kid: Sure, no problem. If you want me to hold your gun and stolen credit cards I can hold them, too. Wouldn’t you be thrilled to know your kid was so generous? You find out they’re holding something … um, worrisome…but you, the parent, were too quick to think the worst. There’s nothing to worry about – your angel was really just being a good friend. It’s good to know that things carry on from generation to generation. Kids are dumb and they think their parents are dumb. But maybe kids can be forgiven.

They probably don’t get enough sleep. Some of them are probably being told to recite The Children’s Prayer. Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. If I should die before I wake? What the hell? Kids must think, I better work the odds on that one. Just stay awake. I’m not sure if “don’t the let the bed bugs bite” is any better. Some parents leave aside prayers and wacky sayings before nighty night and instead encourage kids to take a warm bath – which triggers a series of random thoughts in my sleep-deprived mind. I wonder why people take baths. They step into clean water and all that stuff on the body washes off. So aren’t they just laying in dirty water after that? I next wonder why, when I drop the remote control, the back always flies off and the batteries spill out. And at least one of those batteries rolls under the couch. While I’m looking for the battery, I suddenly wonder why people take photos of cakes. Do they actu-

Page 5 ally then show them to other people? Hey, look here’s a picture of the cake. And look at this one, from a different angle. Here, look at this, I used a flash. Makes me wonder, do people like looking at cake photos? It’s a cake! Speaking of photos. They’re so much better than video when it comes to looking back. A lot of young parents spend time trying to catch magic on video while barely enjoying the moment. You know what you end up with? Stacks of VCR tapes or DVDs no one will ever watch. Most videos (usually shot by dear old dad) are painfully tedious. You’ve got a boring video with dad who is not only filming, but doing a lousy job directing. Through long minutes of actionless video you’ve got Dad yelling out, How old are you now? Can you say Happy Birthday to Grandma? Go over there. Do this, do that. I was moving stuff around in the garage the other day and a friend popped his head in and noticed a box of videos, family videos. What are those, he asked? Oh, them? I’m just holding them for a friend.

BHPOA Meeting Recap

By Katie McFadden

The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA) met at P.S. 114 on Tuesday, March 21, for its monthly meeting. About 30 people showed up to see what’s new in Belle Harbor. On the agenda was updates from the 100 Precinct, an introduction by NYC Public Advocate Letitia James, plus updates on storm protection, flood insurance and Parks Department baffle wall projects. The meeting started off with Captain Janice Holmes of the 100 Precinct providing updates and answering questions. She was followed by Letitia James, Public Advocate for the City of New York, who introduced herself and, then listened to residents' concerns. James explained that as PA, she is “second in line to the mayor. If anything happens to

the mayor, I serve as mayor for six weeks until there’s an election.” She also presides over the City Council and she has the ability to sue the mayor, which she said she’s done often. “I work with him when necessary and I’m the first one to be in his face and sue him from time to time, especially when he’s wrong,” she said. James vowed to fight for those who are still struggling after Hurricane Sandy. “You shouldn’t be punished for a changing climate if the city isn’t prepared for future storm surges. We must ensure that the peninsula is protected from ocean and bay floods,” she said. Councilman Eric Ulrich announced that the voting process for Participatory Budgeting is beginning and discussed a delay on previously voted projects. “The Parks Department has tak-

From there to Beach 149th, all we have is a berm, which has been getting smaller with each storm, and a poorly designed baffle wall,” Iori said. “We still have 1.2 miles of area to reinforce. When I spoke with Dan Forth of the Army Corps of Engineers, he first said they may get started on protection in 2018. Now he’s saying maybe 2020 because they don’t have the money from the federal government, and Washington isn’t focused on helping us. The Army Corps says it has $300 million, when they need about $4 billion. It will probably take until 2024 before we see anything. They’re putting us at risk. It’s four years since the storm. He has brought up the delay to Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, as well as the concern that there still isn’t much protection for Rockaway residents west of the boardwalk. “We’re holding the Parks Department accountable and we’re staying on top of them,” Ulrich said. BHPOA President Hank Iori also spoke about the lack of shore protection for those in Belle Harbor and Neponsit. “After the storm, I said protection should be the number one focus, anything else comes second. When I look at the peninsula, protections of homes still needs to be number one. The boardwalk serves

Sandy Scam Homes Up For Auction By Katie McFadden

Two properties that were used in a Hurricane Sandy-related scam are up for auction. Last month, as revealed in a report by DNAInfo, Donna Rea was arrested and charged with grand larceny for allegedly taking advantage of a dead woman’s property. That woman was Karen Connors, who owned two properties on Beach 120th Street. Connors was sick with cancer and passed away in November 2011 at Peninsula Hospital. Connors had no next of kin and was assumed to be poor, leading her to be buried at Hart Island. In January 2013, Rea, who claimed to be a friend of Connors, formed the Karen M. Connors Living Trust, a document that sup-

posedly contained the signature of Connors, who had been dead for more than a year. The Trust gave Rea control of Connors’ jewelry, furniture, a bank account containing $32,000, her condos in Florida and her two homes on Beach 120th Street. With the homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy, Rea applied to Build it Back to have them repaired. She was approved for $60,000 in repairs and reimbursements, which were used to fix up the homes. Rea allegedly turned one into a rental property, earning Rea $50,000 before she entered an agreement to sell one the home for $800,000. A probe by the Department of Investigation over Rea’s Build it Back claims, uncovered the bigger scheme. Rea was arrested and charged in February. She plead not guilty,

but could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Connors’ properties were turned over to the Queens Public Administrator to be put up for auction. That auction will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29 at the Queens PA’s office (88-11 Sutphin Blvd, Room

61.) The property at 174 Beach 120th Street, a three-story detached 40 x 100 home will start at a minimum bid of $225,000. The second property, at 178 Beach 120th Street, a two-story detached 40 x 100 home with a

garage, is starting at $800,000. All offers to purchase must be made orally at the auction and must be accompanied by a non-refundable 10 percent deposit in the form of a certified of bank check. More information can be found at www. queenscountypa.com. According to a February 19 NY Times article, the money from the auction will go toward having Connors disinterred from Potter’s Field on Hart Island, where people who are typically poor or whose bodies go unclaimed, are buried. The PA’s office found that Connors’ parents were buried at a cemetery in Long Island. There is no room at that cemetery, but Connors will be buried at another Catholic cemetery nearby. Any remaining money will go to any cousins that come forward.

YOU LIKE US! YOU REALLY LIKE US!

On Tuesday, March 21, the Rockaway Times Facebook Page reached a huge milestone. We hit more than 10,000 “Likes!” Not too bad for only being two-and-a-half years in business, if we say so ourselves. But enough about us. Those “Likes” didn’t come from nowhere. Thanks to the more than 10,000 readers and fans for checking out our social media page, giving us a “Like,” and interacting with our story links, photos and things that can’t quite make it into the

newspaper, like videos. We truly love our “Likers” and readers. Without you and our advertisers, none of this would be possible, and we are truly grateful. If you haven’t done so already, head to www. Facebook.com/RockawayTimes so you, too, can follow our Facebook page, where we offer readers even more Rockaway fun. You can also check out our Instagram page by searching for “rockawaytimes.” And while we’re talking digital, make sure to sign up for our e-mail list. You’ll receive an e-mail version of the full Rockaway Times newspaper straight to your inbox by 8:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings. Head to http://bit.do/ RTemail to subscribe, for free of course.

Do you have a closet full of clothes you no longer use, much less remember? Garments, shoes and accessories with the tags still on? Instead of hoarding, clean out your closets, gather the no longer desired items, and swap them at RockaSwap’s clothing swap this Sunday, March 26, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Rockaway Brewing Company, 315 Beach 72nd Street. How it works? The items you bring are swapped with other folks’ oldies, but goodies. According to RockaSwap organizer, Kate Horan, folks who swap, can take anything they like home! Remember to bring your own bag to take stuff home. This is an event for women, men and children. “The idea for this began when I lived in Rincón, Puerto Rico, and participated in a clothing swap at a friend’s.” Horan said. “I

thought, "Wow, this would be an amazing idea to get the Rockaway community together to recycle clothes and help local families in need. When I moved back to Rockaway, I started clothing swaps at my house, and then eventually threw my first big swap at the now closed Playland. Now I am doing it at the RBC. This will be my third swap in Rockaway.” RockaSwap is also collecting prom attire. Horan said, “There is an upcoming Prom Boutique, so dig up those dresses and suits you'll never wear again!” All of leftover clothes collected are donated to nonprofit organization, We Care New York, who in turn gives the clothing collected to families in need. A Better Idea Dear Editor: (THE IDEA GUYS by Chris Boyle Re: Amazon Box Return)…Amazon Prime has a program where you can fill their empty boxes with unwanted items (clothing, toys, shoes, linens etc.), and Amazon will give you a posted paid label that you can download and mail them to Goodwill. I was so glad to be there to shout, "Here we go Kingsmen, here we go!" Dolores "Kavs" Ostrowski Thumbs Up For Rock Pops Dear Editor: Thumbs up to Denise Baker's reply in the Rock Pops section of last week's issue. When asked "What businesses do you think your neighborhood needs?" She replied "a good indoor playground or facility for kids." Rockaway doesn't have anything like that for kids and in a neighborhood where our winters are especially harsher than other areas that aren't close to the water, we need an indoor facility for kids of all ages to work off that ener-

gy during the winter months when parents are going crazy trying to keep them entertained in the house and refuse to have the television on all day. I've said that very same thing to my husband all winter, as I would find myself driving my 20-month-old son all the way to Green Acres Mall just so that he can burn off some steam and get some form of exercise, but driving from Rockaway Park to Green Acres is such an inconvenience. A facility like that on the peninsula with parking is just what Rockaway needs. Thanks for mentioning it Denise. Melissa "Missy" Torres-Echevarria Kickstarting Dear Editor: I've been here, on and off, since 1938, and yes, I was very young and now I'm not. I've lived here, full-time, since 1977. Paul Charosh Alternative Facts Dear Editor: I just wanted to tell you that there have been frequent measles outbreaks here in the U.S. because of lack of immunization, primarily due to medical ignorance as well as irresponsible parenting. In January 2017 there were at least 20 cases in Los Angeles alone. So the "fact" that "measles has been eradicated" is not actually a fact unless it's a Trump alternative fact. Thank you for your consideration. Janet P Over the A Dear Editor: When are they going to get rid of the Shuttle and simply have an A train that continues from Rockaway Park into Manhattan? Palliative vs. Hospice Care

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

In general, hospice care falls under the category of palliative care, however the two have different indications and goals, and are often provided in different settings. The first palliative care unit was opened in 1976 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Quebec by Dr. Balfour Mount. His motivation for opening the unit was his perceived neglect of dying patients in the acute care setting. Since then, palliative care has evolved and is used in many different settings including caring for a life-limiting illness in a patient who is not terminally ill, a life-threatening illness in a patient with symptoms but with the potential to recover, and a chronic illness like heart failure

or emphysema in a patient with symptoms and on therapy, who will eventually succumb to the illness, but who is expected to live longer than someone with advanced cancer. Many people, doctors included, confuse hospice and palliative care. Palliative care focuses on the patient’s experience of the illness rather than the disease itself. Symptom management, psychosocial support, and decision-making support are cornerstones of palliative care. Starting palliative care early in advanced cancer improves outcomes and limits overly aggressive, ineffective therapies at the end of life without hastening death. Palliative care may actually prolong

(blood oxygen percentage) of less than 90 percent. A hospice patient can get oxygen with no questions asked. Home hospice care includes 24-hour on-call services and will provide a physician specialist if so desired. Home-based palliative care can be provided, but its scope is limited. Unlike hospice care, 24-hour coverage is not available and all equipment must be provided under Medicare or private insurance stipulations. Patients needing home-based palliative care must be homebound or severely limited in their mobility. This type of care can often serve as a bridge to hospice care for those who feel they are not ready for hospice care at the time of hospital discharge. Those who receive palliative care at home are less likely to be hospitalized at the end of life, more likely to be transitioned to hospice care at the appropriate time, and more likely to have relief of symptoms while keeping their dignity. life. Palliative care is indicated in someone with advanced cancer who has symptoms even though curative therapy is planned, at the time of a sentinel event like a recurrence on unexpected hospitalization, when palliative radiation is needed, and when changes in chemotherapy are needed because of disease progression. Palliative care is usually given in the inpatient setting. Hospice care, on the other hand, is usually given at home, in a nursing home setting, or in a hospital hospice unit or private hospice facility. To qualify for hospice care the patient must have an illness, certified by two physicians, likely to cause death in six months or less. The purpose of hospice care is to provide quality of life and comfort and to avoid overly aggressive, expensive, and futile care at the end of life. Hospice care is fully covered by Medicare, including any and all devices and equipment. For example if someone who is not on hospice needs home oxygen, they must have a pulse-ox

Marching Season

By Lou Pastina

Last week the mermaid and I had the honor of marching in the New York City St. Patricks’ Day Parade. This is the oldest parade in the city and one that I remember watching on television with the genial white-haired Jack McCarthy for years. It never occurred to me that I could actually march in the parade in those days; that was for others, but not for mere mortals. So when the opportunity came our way via St. John’s University, we jumped on it. It turns out the Irish have been marching for centuries dating back to the 1700s. The parade route has changed over the years, and politics has sometimes overshadowed the parade, but hey, these are the Irish, of course that will happen. In fact, this year a fellow Rockawayite provided us with

buttons protesting against the powers that be in parade management. And when he told me they wanted to change the name of the parade, I tended to agree with the protesters, so I wore my button proudly. Turning onto Fifth Avenue, you get a rush of excitement to be walking down the middle of the street of dreams. It’s a different feeling when people are waving at you and you find yourself waving back, as if you are the Queen herself! Luckily, Friday was a beautiful day with brilliant sunshine, making the mile-and-a-half trek up Fifth a good stretch of the legs. We got to pass by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and few auxiliary Bishops were lingering about, but most of the upper clergy had long vanished. You see we didn’t step off (as they say in parade lingo) until 3 pm, finishing around 4 in the afternoon. All the celebrities and politicians had long since paraded. But it was still thrilling to march past the Cathedral in the middle of the street. From the ecclesiastical to the

rich and powerful, we headed further north toward Trump Tower. We had to march on the other side of the street, I guess Melania was home and didn’t care for the riff-raff passing by. But march we did, past Trump Tower (I may have been guilty of an Italian salute as we passed by), and on past the Plaza and upwards along Central Park. There were many years I stood on the side of the park watching the pipers and County flags go by, and now here I was marching right along the green line. I would have imagined that back in the day the elites of upper Fifth Avenue probably didn’t care too much for those fleeing the famine, walking through their neighborhoods. And I am sure that those marchers felt a supreme feeling of pride, walking freely in their new country. It’s no wonder that every other group of immigrants have followed suit and instituted their own parades of pride. Interestingly enough Ireland didn’t really have St. Patrick’s Day parades until fairly recent-

ly, imitating us here in America. But they always had parades; in fact you wouldn’t believe how many parades they have. The parade industry is highly regulated in Ireland and for good reason, as so many different groups parade and usually parade through their enemies’ neighborhoods. Oh boy, that didn’t always go well. But back to the sheer number. In 2007 there were 2,863 parades according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. That’s about nine parades a day. Have you been to Ireland? It’s not a big country, so chances are if you go, you’ll see a parade! Me? I just like to walk, and how many times do you get to walk in the middle of the street in NYC for a mile-and-a-half? And God bless the Sanitation Department! The street was cleared of snow. You know if you go to New Orleans, you can get a permit to march in your own parade right down Bourbon Street with a rented band! So it’s marching season, let the marching begin!

BHPOA

Continued from Page 6 on? It’s our city government that should be taking care of the properties that we pay taxes for. If we have protection on the beach and bayside, it would give us an argument to fight against higher flood insurance costs,” Iori said. Dana Kochnower, Senior Policy Advisor for the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, discussed flood insurance issues further. Last year, NYC won an appeal of the troublesome FEMA flood insurance maps released in 2013, which would put residents in zones that would lead to them paying extremely high flood insurance premiums, after it was found that some of the methods used to develop these maps were not done properly. FEMA is now in the process of developing two new maps, which could take anywhere from four to six years. “Everything is up for review with Congress.

We’re working with other cities to get FEMA and Congress to understand the challenges we’re all facing.” In the meantime, Kochnower said, “the only thing you can do right now to ensure significantly lower rates is to elevate your home.” She advised those currently looking for assistance to check out FloodhelpNY.org. The meeting ended with a brief update on the baffle wall project. The plan to add concrete inside the baffle wall areas in Belle Harbor and Neponsit was long delayed over a fight over whether or not they existed pre-Sandy. Realizing that the concrete was previously there, the Parks Department will install the concrete again in a project that may begin late spring. BHPOA members, elected officials and others, will be conducting an inspection of the beach, and how to better protect it on April 5. The next BHPOA meeting will be in May.

Set Sail! First New Ferry Boat Heads to NYC The boat is coming! The boat is coming! The first of 20 new boats built for the soon-to-belaunched Citywide Ferry Service departed Horizon Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama on Tuesday, March 21 and is on its way to NYC. The vessel will travel 1,742 nautical miles, across the Gulf of Mexico, through Lake Okeechobee, and up the East Coast of the United States. Depending on weather and other conditions, the vessel is expected to arrive in New York Harbor early next month. You can follow the boat’s progress by following @CitywideFerry or www. citywideferry.nyc. From start to first splash (when a new boat hits water), each Citywide Ferry vessel takes roughly eight months to complete. The vessel then undergoes a sea trial to ensure it is fit for service and for its maiden voyage up the East Coast. Each sea trial, which lasts about a week, includes a

series of tests conducted by the shipyard, the vessel’s owner and the U.S. Coast Guard. With 20 vessels operating at 21 landings across NYC, Citywide Ferry will carry an estimated 4.6 million trips per year across six routes – providing a new and easily accessible transit option for traditionally underserved communities. Mayor de Blasio recently announced hiring for the first of 200 new jobs to be created by Citywide Ferry Service. Boats will now be docked, fueled and maintained out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where an additional passenger stop will be added in 2018. Rockaway service is expected to start in June. The Rockaway route will connect to the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Wall Street. For more information on Citywide Ferry and to stay up-todate on the latest information, visit www.CitywideFerry.NYC.

I swooped in, did some light cleaning, added some swag seating space, and with minutes to spare, folks began streaming in. Thank you to everyone who came! Families came with their children in tow, educators, and local school advocates. Dr. Griffith gave a powerful talk and presentation of her book, “AU-MAZING GIFT: A Journey to Autism Acceptance", while the adults listened and the children frolicked. How do I financially plan ahead for my child? Also, present was Trishia Bermudez, founder of non-profit, Perfect Piece of the Puzzle, Inc., an organization that advocates to financially empower parents of special-needs children. Bermudez brought her tiny munchkin, Matthew, who had a ball dancing for everyone. He is definitely going to be a heartbreaker! Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

The Show Must Go On! By Kami-Leigh Agard

There is a Rwandan saying, “If you are building a house, and a nail breaks, do you stop building, or do you change the nail?” Translation — The show must go on! Last Thursday, the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group meeting had a slight hiccup, due to locality. Our always gracious host, William Francis, proprietor of local cafe, Willderness Yard, was literally entrenched in ice and snow in Upstate New York due to Winter Storm Stella, and because of power outages, Will had no way of contacting me. During the week, I stopped by Willderness Yard a few times, a little befuddled as to why they were closed. Thursday, anxiety began to build, as they were still closed, and by 4p.m., I was still unable to reach Will. Folks, anxiety evolved into panic! Many people confirmed they were coming, plus I had a special guest. What in the flying feathers was I going to do? Running up and down Rockaway Beach Boulevard like a headless chicken, by 5:30p.m., a million thoughts flooded my already aching noggin. Maybe I should cancel? Maybe I could host it somewhere else? Local barber shop, Frenchies, located nearby, generously offered their space. However, I felt guilty to impose such a last minute request. I went home to my granny and collapsed. She looked at me with her owl-like stare, and

The Idea Guys

Idea Casserole By Rick Horan

Here are some more ideas we cooked up for you. And most are dumb! Maybe robots taking over the world isn't the worst thing. Have a building where the elevators are fixed, and pressing a floor button moves the entire building to the floor you want to go to Add beer to nicotine, and smoke it, or drink it. Americans can give up their vote in exchange for a free Big Mac every election. Make a bacon-flavored tooth paste to encourage people to brush their teeth. Commit crimes, but have a friend videotaping from a distance, so if anything goes wrong you can pretend it's just a YouTube prank. Open a buffet that charges

people based on their weight upon entering. Send a team of astronauts to the moon, and have them set up a studio there where they fake their own landing back on Earth. Start a restaurant called "Tacos Tacos Tacos." Sell only pizza. Raise a child from birth without any toys. Convince him that household chores are fun. Let's pick a random address from Google Maps and everyone send a letter there today. Everyone switch jobs at random for one day. Take out a huge insurance policy on your home. Disassemble and rebuild the house with gingerbread. Eat the house. Heard any great ideas? If you have, send them to us at Mail@Rockawaytimes.com.

Here is a close-up side view of the Dublin House, on the SW corner of Seaside Avenue (Beach 103rd Street) and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Old Irishtown Rockaway, USA. The year is 1949 and the sign notes there is TV inside the Dublin House. Other signs read Hire’s Root Beer and other types of liquid refreshments and snacks at the time. The sign on the utility pole on the right states that robes must be worn to and from the beach! Notice the Boulevard is paved but the old brick pavement is still visible. Seaside

Avenue was the only street to keep a name when numbers were given out due to the street’s historical significance. At the top left in the photo is the Schilling Road House at Beach 102nd Street where the Irish Circle Pub & Restaurant was. The Dublin House and much of Old Irishtown were demolished several decades ago for the construction of Dayton Tower’s West high rises.

Place onion wedges and garlic at the bottom of the crockpot. This will act as a platform for the meat so it doesn’t touch the bottom and dry out.

Place meat on top of onions and garlic. Mix together water, beer, sugar and vinegar. Pour mixture over meat. Sprinkle seasoning over the meat. Set crockpot, cover and cook on low for 8 hours. After 4 hours of cooking, add in the potatoes and carrots. Cover and continue cooking. When 1-1/2 hour remains, add the cabbage. Cover and continue cooking for the remainder of the time.

10 DIYer Projects For Under $20.00 1- Add a little accent color If you have shelves in a room, you can add a little accent color to the room by painting the shelves. Using a pastel paint will also brighten up a room even in small portions (like on shelves) 2- Replace light switches (and plate covers) Most people don’t consider replacing a switch as an update, but changing it to a dimmer switch allows you to adjust

a room's lighting to the perfect mood. Adding a decorative switch plate cover is also a nice added touch. 3- Re-caulk a bathroom Re-caulking a bathroom not only adds a fresh, clean look to the caulked areas, it also provides a fresh seal to prevent water leaks. 4- Doorknob coat hangers Old doorknobs make great coat hangers. With everything from antique brass to a glass look, and most anything else you can imagine, you can find doorknobs to accent any entrance way. 5- Natural wood coasters Wood discs cut from branches are easy to find online. By staining a few to your desired color and applying a clear coat, they make great coasters, hot plates, etc. 6- Personalized key holders Using an old picture frame,

The art of

paint the frame to a color of your liking, add a fabric background and a few hooks along the bottom, and you have a personalized key holder. 7- Paint a bottle Old decorative bottles are nice, but hand-painted ones add a unique decoration to any room. 8- Stain touchup coat Not all staining projects require major work. An older, worn piece of furniture may look good and just need a little touchup. Applying a quick coat of stain can bring many things back to life. 9- Paint a door A fresh coat of paint on the entrance door to your home, can give the entranceway a whole new life. 10- New lights There are many light fixtures

that cost less than $20, and a new light can change the entire look of a room. If there is a project you would like to see in The DIYer, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

One On One Coming to 116

By Katie McFadden

Beach 116th is getting a bit of rehabilitation. One On One Physical Therapy is set to open in the middle of the block, taking over a large space that has been empty for too long. On Monday, March 27, One On One Physical Therapy will open its doors at 231 Beach 116th Street. Anthony DeSena, Executive Vice President of One On One and a partner in this new location, along with Richard Bodian and Joseph Saraceno, said One on One decided to come to Rockaway because there was a demand for it. The new center will provide a more local place for current patients who utilize one of One On One’s Brooklyn, Manhattan or Staten Island

locations. “I’ve been working at our Marine Park office for about 11 years and we have a ton of patients who come from Rockaway and they all said they’d love to have one in the area,” DeSena said. One On One Physical Therapy centers are a part of the NYU and the Hospital for Special Surgery networks, so post-op patients from those hospitals are often referred to One On One locations for rehabilitation. Now those patients from Rockaway will have a location right in their own backyard. There are 18 One On One locations across New York. The Rockaway location will be the first one in Queens. It will also be open to new patients, which there is plenty of room for in the two-story, 4,400 square-foot space. The building was previously home of the short-lived Rockaway Diner, a ‘50s-themed eatery which opened in the summer of

2008. Before that, it was home to a bank. The large space caught the eye of those at One On One, who were looking for the perfect spot for their Rockaway location. The transition to a One On One Physical Therapy Center has been a process a year in the making between permit issues and construction, but it’s finally ready for business, and the owners hope it will bring some new life to Beach 116th. “We’re excited to be coming out here and being a part of the rejuvenation of Beach 116th Street,” DeSena said. One On One Physical Therapy will offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, sport rehabilitation, gait and balance training, sports performance training, strength and conditioning, post-surgical care and more. Most major insurances will be accepted. The brand new facility, which has an elevator, will have

are also considering leasing out some space within the facility to local doctors who may need office space. With other physical therapy facilities on the peninsula, like Sands Point and RBNY Physical Therapy, One On One will be another great option for those in need of care. DeSena says they will be a valuable addition to the mix. “Our approach is different. We’re not cookie cutter and every treatment is targeted toward the individual patient. The number of offices we have across the city shows that we’re doing something right,” DeSena said. He added that One On One will also aim to help the local community. “Besides providing the highest level of care, we’re huge on community outreach. We do what we can to help out around any of our locations

we think will help a lot of the business owners here,” DeSena said. The owners are happy to finally open their doors on Monday. “It’s exciting, There’s been a lot of time and energy dedicated to this project. Our patients that live out here are super pumped to see it open. We’re ready to serve the community and it seems like it's wanted here. We hope this will help bring Beach 116th Street back to its glory days,” DeSena said. For more information about

state-of-the art equipment, an open gym space and private treatment areas across its two floors. The facility will be staffed with some locals. The owners

and we support surrounding businesses. When we open, we’re going to direct our patients to the local restaurants and stores on the block, which

OVERLOAD

Recognize and note the signs of overload. Feeling tired. Not knowing where you are for a second. Feeling drained. Feeling down. Overload is different from stress, yet needs attention just as much because it could be the underlying cause of stress, which we all know by now is detrimental to a good, happy life. First thing to do is to note the cause or causes of overload. Often it’s a buildup: needs of work, family, friends, pets, organizations you belong to, etc. etc. Fill it in. Note it all. Sometimes we just forge ahead – because we can “do it all” and then BOOM, some of those signs above start becoming. . . start manifesting. You will realize: “Wow, I’m dealing with and doing a lot.” Just to yourself. Just come to terms with all of it to yourself. No one is going to tell you that you are so incredibly amazing because you are dealing with so much because they are going through the same! Number one: don’t take anything else on. There is nothing wrong, when someone is asking you for something, with saying “I have what I can give my wholehearted attention to right now, maybe sometime in the future we can talk about it.” When we are ok, we can give what others need in a wholehearted way. If we are on overload, that is not possible. Once you have recognized and noted ALL that is going on in your life, the next step is assessment. What is absolutely necessary today? What is absolutely necessary this week? Then make these

things priorities, and let some things fall off just for the time being. Just for the time being! What can I back off from? Get a break from some one thing. Of course, if there is a possibility that you can retreat to a vacation to refresh and renew, do it! If not, we have to find ways to alleviate the OVERload so that we feel more at ease and all of those weighing down symptoms lift off. A free day! If it is at all possible to clear one day, do it. What can I do now so that I can have a free day tomorrow? Just like a snow day. Cannot go anywhere – stopped. What would you do or not do? Bottom line: Feel. Think : Do or Not Do. The continual going going going has no room for: “what am I feeling now?” No room to think : “is this good right now?” No room to be in the present moment with conscious, feeling decisions about what we’re doing at the moment in time. It’s almost like a train proceeding on a track with no stops – no checks and balances. Determine what your checks and balances should be – for you. No two of us are alike, so only you can know. What is your barometer? When is it too much? When are you on OVERload? Back off, take a long, deep breath and find a way to let some things go for the moment. Get back to establishing a balance and go from there. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Far Rock Softball League Batters Up To Spark Change By Kami-Leigh Agard

Driving down Seagirt Boulevard during the spring through summer months, have you ever seen a band of women fully-geared in softball uniforms in a kaleidoscope of team colors, playing softball on Beach 17th Street Park? Age ain’t nothing but a number, because these women ages 16 to 54, are mothers, aunts, daughters and even grandmothers, who all belong to Far Rock’s Stop the Violence Softball League. According to James Jenkins, organizer of the league and coach since 2013, these women have been coming out full force playing softball, to inspire and drive their Far Rockaway community to stop the violence, and instead mobilize to come together for positive change for everyone, especially youth. “First I was just a participant. I coached the team, Rockaway Diamonds, and then when the

league expanded, I came in as an organizer. My vision was to broaden it into more than just a community affair. I knew that with proper structure and organization, we could be a fullfledged league,” Jenkins said. “In 2013, we started with two teams, who played in the back of Redfern Park, an area noto-

rious for street wars, drugs and gangs. Then in 2014, we decided to bring the women to the park on Beach 17th Street, which had a better environment and more exposure for the women. “After two years coaching, I stepped up and tried to take us to the next level. We went from two teams in 2013, five teams in

2015, eight teams in 2016 and now for this upcoming 2017 season, we have a total of 12 teams,” Jenkins said. According to Jenkins, a lot of these women did not have structure in their lives. Some of them come from the projects and broken homes. “These women have had rough patches in their lives. When they see positive male role models, they look at you differently, show respect and ultimately have more respect for themselves. They are used to guys just feeding them what they want to hear, and who ultimately have an unfavorable agenda. “We have a great turnout, it has been amazing. This is something we weren’t able to do in Far Rockaway, a neighborhood that has a notorious reputation. The street wars between the projects, gun vi-

FAR ROCK SOFTBALL

Continued from Page 33

olence and drugs kept folks isolated and reluctant to engage. So this is why the women’s softball league became enormously inspirational for the community. We have a fan base of over 200-300 people coming out every Sunday to watch and support the women playing. That’s why we call it “Stop the Violence” because now folks can avoid what’s going on in the streets and support something positive for the community,” Jenkins said. According to Jenkins, the 101 Precinct is a huge support. “Officers Kevin Campbell and Lynn Blanchette wholeheartedly jumped in. The Redfern Housing Projects were considered the most dangerous on the east end of the peninsula. Now, the crime in the area, especially during the spring and summer months has drastically decreased. The precinct, neighborhood men, women and youth all love the league. The youth, most of all, take pride in seeing these women’s ded-

ication in promoting positive team spirit and companionship. Everybody is watching the women playing softball in a safe place. We all love it!” Jenkins said. According to Jenkins, since the league’s genesis in 2013, there have not been any violent incidents or crimes at the league’s games. Then in 2015, the Far Rockaway RBI Baseball for Kids was born. “We saw the pride the youth took in carrying the women’s equipment and just helping out on the field. We haven’t had a youth baseball league in Far Rockaway in years. Through social media, giving out flyers on playgrounds and just talking to folks, within a few weeks, we had a team! RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities. Deepmalya Ghosh, a director at Childcare Center of NY, was passionate about bringing youth baseball to Far Rockaway. As he also has a connection with Major League Baseball (MLB), we were able to get funding for uniforms and equipment, and a trip for our kids to fly to Flor-

ida for training. Last year, MLB sponsored us to go to San Diego, Calif., to compete with teams from cities across the country. This experience exposed the kids to different people and taught them how to interact. Imagine a Far Rockaway kid befriending a kid from Boston. Let the kids see there is something outside of Far Rockaway. “Inner city kids idolize drug dealers. They see this guy everyday who looks nice, drives expensive cars, and the women love him. They think his life is all good. That’s what these kids are seeing and idolizing,” Jenkins said. For a safer school district for his children, Jenkins moved to Delaware. Yet, he is in Far Rockaway every weekend. So why is Jenkins, a husband and father of four so passionately committed? “I have lived in Rockaway almost all of my life. The guys in my area in the 40s had ‘beef’ with the guys in Edgemere and Hammels. It was rough. I have seen a lot in the streets, and wanted to start change, espe-

The Rockaway Times cially with the kids. It’s hard to reach them. Now we have Rock Safe Streets (RSS), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to ‘cure violence’ through prevention, mediation, advocacy, and education to build a safer, stronger Far Rockaway community for all. These guys go out, get guns off the streets and reconcile street ‘beefs.’ Stop the Violence Women’s softball league has the same goal — to advocate positive change and peace in the community,” Jenkins said. The Far Rockaway Stop the Violence Softball league plays on Beach 17th Street Park, the football field on Beach 32nd and now in 2017, they will also be playing on Beach 112th Street. “We wanted to bring more exposure for the league, so folks across the peninsula and Broad Channel would know the positive impact we are making in the community,” Jenkins said. Opening day is April 23rd. For more information on the league’s schedule, visit http:// stv.leaguerepublic.com/l/ fg/1_620968528.html

A 5K for Firefighters

On Saturday April 22, a new race will debut in the always-popular boardwalk Rockapulco Run Series. FDNY Lieutenant Thomas Healy and retired Army Colonel Kevin Boyle have teamed up for the LT Healy Foundation 5K, benefitting the charity of the same name. “From day one our charity has provided financial assistance to members of the FDNY who have family members battling cancer, or are themselves faced with this monumental challenge,” LT Healy said, “and we could not dream of a bet-

ter location than Rockaway to hold our race as this area is the home of so many of our great firefighters, and I can not think of a community more supportive of us.” The flat and fast 5K run will be contested solely on the recently reopened boardwalk. The race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on Beach 102nd Street. A post-race celebration will be held at the Community House, and is open to all runners, families, and friends. Day-of registration will also take place at the Community House about an hour before the race, but

early registration is encouraged. In addition to camaraderie, fitness and refreshments at the Community House, plus free t-shirts, the race will feature several cash prizes. The overall race winners will receive $250 with cash prizes also going to the second and third place finishers. However, the jackpot will be the prizes for firefighters. The firehouse with the most participants will earn $1000. Additionally the oldest, youngest and fastest firefighters will also receive cash prizes. “I attended undergrad and law school at St. Johns before serving throughout the world with the Army. Knowing that our firefighters sacrifice every day for our city, it just made perfect sense to come to Rockaway with its tremendous reputation for supporting New York’s heroes (both police and

firefighters). In addition to benefitting a great charity, this event will be a great day of camaraderie, plus a chance for many heroes to earn some cash prizes. We could not thank John Edwards, Rockapulco director, and The Community House enough for all their support,” Colonel Boyle said. He continued, “we are looking forward to a great event, not just for our firefighters, but for the NYC running community, as well as for the great people of Rockaway.” Registration is available online at http://www.active. com/rockaway-park-ny/running/distance-running-races/1lt-thomas-healy-foundation-5k-2017 Plus day of race registration is available at The Community House. THE MARY LOUIS ACADEMY CAPTURES STATE “AA” CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL CROWN By Jim McCool

It’s March Madness for TMLA! The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) High School girls basketball team, located in Jamaica, Queens captured their first-ever New York State Catholic High School “AA” championship, defeating Monsignor Scanlon (Bronx, NY) in an exciting overtime thriller at the Rose Hill gym on Fordham University’s campus. During the past few weeks, TMLA won the Brooklyn-Queens Catholic diocesan championship defeating Christ the King, the NY City Catholic High School championship defeating Monsignor Scanlon and lastly, the NY State Catholic High School title after defeating Cardinal O’Hara from the Buffalo, NY area in a semi-final match-

up, before facing Monsignor Scanlon for a third time this season, after they defeated St. Anthony’s of Long Island. A few Rockaway locals helped with the efforts. Courtney McCool, a senior co-captain and Carly McCann, a junior, both residing on the Rockaway peninsula in Belle Harbor, made key contributions to the TMLA successful season and championship run. McCann came off the bench to make

two key 3-pointers during the victory over Christ the

King in the diocesan championship. McCool came to TMLA, winning the JV City championship as a freshman and has been part of the starting lineup the past three years for the varsity team, contributing to the success of the TMLA basketball program. McCool will attend and play basketball at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC next fall. The Mary Louis Academy now travels to Glenn Falls, NY to compete in the Final Four for NY State Federation championship. We wish the girls and their teammates best of luck. Go Hilltoppers!
