City Officials Address Locals at Town Hall By Bianca Fortis New York City Economic Development Corporation President Kyle Kimball knows Rockaway wants its ferry, but the service is just too expensive for the city to maintain. “It’s not lost on me that this is something the community has come to depend on,” he said. Kimball made the comments on Monday evening at a Town Hall and Resource Fair to discuss the state of the community two years after Sandy. The event was organized by Councilman Eric Ulrich and Councilman Donovan Richards. Ulrich said the intention of the meeting was to be a “constructive dialogue” between the city and Rockaway. “Hurricane Sandy impacted Far Rockaway the same way it impacted Belle Harbor,” Ulrich said. “It affected Breezy Point the same way as Bayswater. Everyone was affected in the same way.” Hundreds of community members were present at the event. Arguably the hottest topic of the night was the planned termination of ferry service on Friday. According to Kimball, the city analyzed the cost of the ferry and decided it was just unaffordable. While a ticket for a ride on the ferry might cost $3 for a pas-

senger, the city would have to subsidize it $30 per person. By comparison, the Staten Island ferry costs $4 per passenger, the subway 60 cents per passenger, the East River Ferry $2 per passenger and Select Bus Service $13 per passenger. “I realize I cannot convince you this is the right decision,” he said. “I realize through all the conversations there’s just a difference of opinion about how the city can spend its resources. All I can ask is for you to trust that we have made the best decision that the city can afford.” During a question and answer session, Kimball was asked about the status of the Game Changer grant program. Last year the city allocated $84 million to five areas throughout the city that were hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. A portion of that, about $18 million, was set to go to Rockaway. Local economic development groups then submitted proposals to the city to secure portions of that funding. However, none of the funding has since been distributed. The EDC has repeatedly said it is still evaluating the proposals. “We are continuing to evaluate the effectiveness of that particular program relative to the proposals we received to make sure the money that is deployed,

whether or not it’s Game Changer for some of the other resiliency competitions, is used in a catalytic and transformative way,” Kimball said. Another notable moment from the town hall was when Mitchell Silver, the commissioner of the New York City Parks Department apologized for his wording in a memo to de Blasio that became public last month. The memo was written to notify the mayor’s administration that FEMA would likely provide $480 million for the new Rockaway Boardwalk, a much higher number than the $274 million budgeted for the project. “We continue to be concerned that it will be a political liability for the Administration in the Rockaways when the full $480 million FEMA reimbursement funding for the boardwalk becomes known,” Silver allegedly wrote. “I want to take this opportunity to

apologize for a mistake I made early in my tenure,” he said on Monday. “I suspect you’re all wondering about my incorrect or unfortunate words when I used ‘political liability’ in an internal memo sent to the first deputy mayor about a month ago. What I meant and wish I had said specifically is that the Rockaway community is concerned about how many FEMA reimbursement moneys are to be allocated and we understand those concerns. As the mayor said in Rockaway two weeks ago, of course it’s not a political liability to have resources and of course we should be accountable for those resources. I share the mayor’s thoughts and I hope I can earn your trust moving forward.” Anyone with additional questions or issues related to Sandy can contact Ulrich’s office at 718-738-1083 or Ricards’ office at 718-471-7014.

All season long, BuyCostumes.com has been hosting its first ever coast-tocoast Orange Tour, in which its team of Orange Ambassadors have been donating costumes and performing “boo’ing” – random acts of kindness – in nine major cities. On Thursday, October 30, the tour will finish following one final charitable act—giving back

to those in the community and paying it forward to those who helped during the Rockaway Beach’s time of need. The celebrating will continue with an early-evening bash at The Knights of Columbus organization in Rockaway Beach in partnership with Rockaway W.I.S.H. There, guests can enjoy a variety of festive activities including a kid’s costume fashion show, face painting, pumpkin decorating, spin art and more. Food Network host Sandra Lee will be on site to discuss curated Orange List content with recipes for food and drinks, and will showcase some sweet Halloween treats, including Yummy Mummies and Orange Cupcake Pumpkins. The Rockaway party will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. The Knights of Columbus is located at 333 Beach 90th St.

YANA Hosts Fundraiser Community resource center YANA is hosting a fundraiser to help keep its doors open. The organization, whose name stands for “You Are Never Alone,” aims to help job-seekers find employment.

The benefit will be November 8 at the Fort Tilden RAA Gallery T7. It will be from 5 to 10 p.m. The organization asks for a $10 donation. Bands to play include Jammin Jon’s Mad Music Trip, Walker Hornung, Billy Sal Band, John Simonelli, and Jessie May.

Goldfeder Criticizes FEMA ‘Recoupment’ Just days before the second anniversary of Sandy, with many still struggling to recover, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder blasted the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s recent decision to demand Sandy victims return at least $5.8 million dollars in federal aid. “Families who received additional assistance, through no fault of their own, should not be asked to return money that was clearly spent on aiding their recovery from Sandy,” Goldfeder said. “For FEMA to ask victims to pay back funding already spent on recovery, when many are still drowning in debt from the storm, is unacceptable.” According to residents, FEMA recently sent out letters to homeowners requesting that they return aid money paid out in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Many victims had used this additional money to rebuild their homes, cover rental expenses while displaced or to pay for damaged property. This policy, which FEMA calls “recoupment,” is intended to recover excess funds paid out to Sandy victims as a result of poor record keeping and clerical issues the agency in the aftermath of the disaster. These extra funds, which for some homeowners total thousands of dollars, are not considered to be cases of victims knowingly committing fraud, which are handled by a different FEMA department from the one handling recoupments.

Peninsula Nursing Grand Reopening Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center honored first responders during its celebration of its grand reopening after the building was renovated due to damage from Hurricane Sandy. The facility first opened in 1972 and received a $2.5 million renovation after it was taken over by Cassena Care. The first floor of the building was destroyed, but the facility stayed open with the help of a generator.

Somebody at the same

affair wearing torn dungarees gets the warmer welcome every time. Men hear it at home from their wives or girlfriends about how they’re supposed to dress better when they’re going to functions (men think that corduroy jacket from 15 years ago IS dressing better). On the way, the wife is not happy. You really have to buy some new clothes. When they get to the function, it’s about 2 minutes before the husband spots a guy in dungarees and maybe a shirt that somebody else bought for him. See? Look at that guy? Look at how he’s dressed? The wife ignores this. And that guy, the one in jeans, is always happy! He never looks self-conscious. He owns the down and dirty look. Every man wants to be him. He’s the Dos Equis guy. He doesn’t have to loosen his tie or take off the jacket to get comfortable; he already is. The only time I can remember somebody being called out for sartorial stupidity was when a friend showed up at a wake in a sweat suit. Not that there is a taboo against sweats at a wake. It was a one day wake and my friend, a gym teacher, got the news while he was already at work. “I can’t go the wake,

Page 5 I’ve got gym clothes on, my sweats.” It was me who said, “Steve will remember you came for his mother’s wake, not that you were wearing a sweat suit.” “Yeah, you’re right, ok,” he replied. Well, when he walked in wearing an electric blue sweat suit, the friends at the Irish wake howled. He gave me a dirty look because I had talked him into coming. I said, “You didn’t tell me it was THAT blue!” Boyleing Over: The good lines never stop. After a couple of columns about proverbs and lines heard regularly in households, readers continue to send in some beauts. Mary Ellen Olsen offered one with some Cold War overtones: “When we were growing up and having dinner at our dining room table, sometimes while some of us kids were eating fast, my dad would say “Slow down, You’re eating as though the Russians are in Broad Channel!” Kim Greene reminded me of another tough love nugget. “You crying? I’ll give you something to cry about.” Sharon Gabriel cracked me up with this one from her father. When he would get annoyed with someone he would say “I don’t have to talk to you, I can talk to important people.”

The Dylan Smith street renaming ceremony was attended by hundreds of people. Sandy evokes many memories and we can see progress or lack of it with the spectrum of rebuilding efforts. As far as we know, the Dylan Smith sign is the first lasting tribute to heroism borne from the storm.

What did we do? We asked Jill Weber, Rockaway Parks Administrator, to write something for the Sandy issue. We figured it’d be interesting to get a perspective from someone who was there for the clean up, through the various stages, and attended numerous meetings, etc. She said yes. A couple of weeks later a higher up, Assistant Commissioner for Communications, Arthur Pincus, said no. Hope we didn’t get Jill in trouble for asking!

Maybe the Mayor will show up in Breezy Point on the Sandy anniversary, just two days and a year after he promised to come back. On October 27, 2013 Bill de Blasio, as a mayoral candidate visited Breezy Point. Denise Neibel of the Breezy Point Cooperative said: “Bill, I would like to

invite you and Chirlane, one year from now, to come back right here and let’s talk of the success we’ve had building back the 350 homes that aren’t here today and see where this community is”. The mayoral candidate replied: I happily accept your invitation and we’ll be back before that, too. ( Well, we know he didn’t get back before that. Will he be there on the anniversary?)

***

The Village Voice conducted a reader’s poll about the “best of” in New York City. Rockaway was voted the best beach (of course) and the Thai Rock was called the “Best Restaurant in Far Rockaway.” Yea, we know, they called it Far Rockaway. Rockaway Taco was called the best “Pop-up” given its seasonal existence.

Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation today that will lower the default speed limit in New York City from 30 to 25 miles per hour. Beginning November 7, the speed limit on all streets will be 25 mph, unless otherwise posted. ( We hope people, forced back into cars because the ferry is going away, won’t speed).

***

Kyle Kimball, the mysterious man of the mysterious EDC, met locals at a town hall Monday night. He said they tried, they really, really tried to keep the ferry. And he was asked about Game Changer money, the $18 million Rockaway was supposed to get to spur economic activity. “We’re continuing to look to make sure we’re spending the right way for the community.” Maybe he’s saving it for a rainy day. Pssst, Kyle, the rainy day already happened.

Gripe of the Day

Dear Editor: We need more public transportation not less for Rockaway and Queens. Those that oppose a quiet AIR TRAIN type and all city council members should be forced to live in the area and be forced to use the public transportation here, If they did, lots of things would change for the better. Dorothy Fraher

An Oasis In the After Storm

Dear Editor: I remember the thoughts going through my head after the storm...all the hard work I put into getting this business (Blue Bungalow Spa) going and now it’s gone. My business didn’t physically get damaged. But no one is going to even think about a Spa treatment for a long time, I thought. And then lo and behold, the clients I had developed a relationship with over the first year and a half started

to call. They needed a place to go to and get away from all the anxiety they had to deal with after the storm. They needed to start taking care of themselves in order to move along. We would sit after a treatment and just talk, sometimes the tears would flow from both of us. Everyone was so thankful to have a place to retreat to and they left with a little lighter step to carry on. After the first few months of rebuilding my home with my husband and trying to keep the Spa open, I realized if my business can make it through this year then we have a chance of keeping this dream going for a place to just unwind and recharge your body, mind and spirit right here in Rockaway!! Pat Rorke

Enough Already

Dear Editor: How is it that a 4 foot concrete wall and 10 feet of sand is enough PROTECTION for Belle Harbor and Neponsit but not enough for the rest of Rockaway ? Why couldn’t that ap-

proach be used for the whole peninsula ? Why do we have to destroy our boardwalk and replace it with a concrete road? Why do we have to increase our debt for a project that we don’t need or want ? Please send this letter to the Governor, Mayor, FEMA, NYEDC, the NYC city council,a ll of our local politicians, the community board and the residents of Rockaway. John Edwards

Failed Leadership Continues

Dear Editor, Failed leadership from the moment Hurricane Sandy hit NYC continues two years later. Let’s not forget that only a day or two after Hurricane Sandy hit New York, Governor Cuomo wanted to move forward with the NYC Marathon. While he and other New York electeds were planning the marathon, over one hundred NYC families were planning masses and burials for their loved ones killed by the Hurricane. Only after an uproar form Hurricane Sandy victims did Governor Cuomo call off the Marathon. I realized at that very moment how out of touch the Governor was with the people. It is unfortunate to say that two years later our current political leaders are still failing us. Use your power, on November 4 2014, to let the current elected’s know how unhappy you are with the slow pace of recovery from the storm. Vote the Incumbents Out on Tuesday Nov. 4,

2014. Vote for Rob Astorino for Governor and Michael Conigliaro for State Senate. It’s time for a change. Margaret Wagner

Everybody’s Not A Winner

Dear Editor: I very much connected with the last line in last issue’s Boyleing Point about all kids being winners and students of the month. I saw my kids grow up in a upper middle class white neighborhood in NJ. Many kids there got new cars the day the license comes in, but the thing about it is that it’s a giant cocoon like living in Mr. Roger’s neighborhood. I saw it in the Little League, in their gym class, in band and so many other parts of the school life. Made me concerned that when the cold difficult aspects of reality hit they will be ill-prepared. I’ve made sure to inject hurdles and tough goals into their lives and to give them conflicting issues for them to resolve and digest. I’ve let them know that when things don’t make sense, there’s probably a problem and important decisions usually come with sacrifice and hard choices. We are diluting the words themselves, there was a time when being a winner meant something. Like you said, now it’s a title that is passed around the classroom student by student, each getting a turn. Robert Kaskel

The Meeting Will Be Revealing Our elected officials are meeting with the Mayor on Wednesday to talk about the ferry which is scheduled to shut down after its last Friday run. Frankly, we expect a compromise or a promise of some kind that is too good to pass up. Why else would he meet? Why would he meet now? To embarrass all our reps? Embarrassed they should be if they walk away empty handed. There is one question we’d like each of our elected reps to ask the mayor: do you expect me to support you the next time you run? And then we hope some of them have the backbone to say, I won’t unless you help us here. Somehow, they should get their money’s worth for going to this meeting. Six million dollars will float the ferry. And while the subsidy is large, the $6 million can come from Sandy relief money. No matter what you hear about federal obstacles regarding how the money is spent, funds can go the ferry. Just like Build It Back and other programs

have had to improvise and lobby to get the feds to budge, the same could happen here. Sandy money (NY Rising, for one; Game Changer for two) can be used. Yes it can. Look where the money is going now. To consultants. No hurdles there. If the elected reps walk out empty handed it will be a clear demonstration that they have zero clout. It will be a clear demonstration that they are just rally-goers and sign holders. We’ve already got people doing that and they don’t get paid. While the reps try to secure a ferry deal, they may as well try to get the Mayor to commit to an accelerated boardwalk rebuild schedule. While the ferry is important on a symbolic level and will lead to greater economic opportunities, it currently only serves hundreds. The boardwalk is vital to many thousands. In the summer, it’s vital to millions. Somebody, somewhere should make the case that’s what’s good for Rockaway is good for the City. That line of thinking has never been tried.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

2 Years Later In Broad Channel The Band Plays On! Two years ago on the evening of October 29th, 2012, a freak of nature by the name of Sandy gave birth to a 10+ foot storm surge from the swollen pregnant belly of Jamaica Bay which quickly rolled up the east and west sides of Broad Channel onto Cross Bay Boulevard on top of a 5.3 foot high tide. Watching incredulously, in awestruck silence, we saw the waters of the bay quickly lay claim to our small town against the backdrop of a dark night intermittently

made brilliant with the flashes of exploding electrical transformers and short circuited power lines. When the sun rose on the morning of Tuesday, October 30th, those of us who chose to remain during the storm slowly emerged from our homes and surveyed the devastation that had enveloped us overnight. We stood together, dumbstruck, as the realization that our worst fears had come to pass. The wind driven waters of Jamaica Bay had risen and trans-

formed our small community of Broad Channel into a watter sotted wasteland without power, heat, communication, transportation, fuel, sanitation, food, habitable living space, emergency services, post office, churches or school. Then, less than 48 hours later, just to add insult to injury, we were struck by a nor’easter which dropped some two inches of snow and ice on the street making an already miserable situation even worse. The following days, weeks, and months found us all consumed with the myriad and incredibly difficult tasks at hand in attempting to get our homes back to a semblance of habitability while dealing with the complexities of FEMA, the impersonal, slow to react and less than caring attitudes of our flood insurance companies and the reluctance on the part of our banks to disperse such funds when they finally received the checks. Two years later, although serious issues still face many of our residents, there is no doubt that our community of Broad Channel has made great strides in recovering from this disaster. And we did it together, as we always do. We realized that not only had we suffered incredible individual losses, the very real possibility existed that we had also lost what all

of us hold most dear, that which keeps us anchored to our island community – our town. Together, we found that to be completely unacceptable. Together we shared laughter, tears, frustration, elation, sorrow, hope, despair, food, drink, showers, towels, soap, clothes, tools and much more. Together we helped each other slowly repair and make whole what this terrible storm had torn asunder. Together we endured this nightmare and came away from that experience with a new sense of rebirth, hope and community spirit. Together we celebrated and shared Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meals. Together we showed the entire world that Broad Channel is no featureless town to be easily rubbed off the map, cast aside and forgotten. Somebody once remarked to me that the night Sandy ravaged our town was the night the music died for Broad Channel. Two years later we still proudly stand together as proof that, here in Broad Channel, the band plays on. Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else? What Would Dylan Do? By John Sica As the second anniversary of Superstorm Sandy arrives and Beach 130th street is renamed for Dylan Smith it is a good time to look back on what happened that night in Belle Harbor. The following account was taken from my speech at the ceremony for the renaming of the street. With the permission of Dylan’s mother, Mary, I contacted some of the people that he saved that night and asked them if I could interview them on camera for a documentary I was making about Sandy. I had heard what Dylan had done that night from various people and I thought good job Dyl, you paddled around and took people to safety. How naïve I was. As I stood behind the camera listening to my neighbors tell their stories, tears streamed from my eyes from the power of those stories. Let me set the stage first. Many people here who stayed that night will never forget what it was like as we watched our town get swallowed up by the ocean. We all have our own stories but beach 130th street was much more devastating. The river that was raging down the street was described by Mike McDonald and Kathy Cregg as “a raging torrent, carrying with it couches, and boilers and all sorts of debris, that if the debris hit you as you tried to make your way through the water it would knock you out.” Ray and Lauren Marten described “flaming embers the size of softballs raining down from the sky making it necessary to wear ski masks to keep from getting your face burnt.”

As the fire spread from house to house it was apparent that no one, not the police, nor the fire department could come and help them. Once your house caught fire, it usually started on a deck or roof, you had no choice but to take whatever you could safely carry and head out into that raging 6 foot deep torrent of water, debris and fire. Everyone, including elderly men, women, and children leaving their houses and everything in it, for the last time, heading into the unknown with no choice. While these people had no choice but to go out into this dangerous chaos, Dylan smith had a choice. Watching from the safety of his window with his mother and four family friends who had escaped their own dire situations, he knew what he must do. In a way though, he too had no choice because that is the kind of man he was. He couldn’t sit there and watch when he was trained as a lifeguard to

save lives. He jumped out of his window with his surfboard and headed straight towards the fire. It is in this helpless environment that I heard story after story about, “just when it seemed most hopeless”, Dylan Smith would appear on his surfboard, with his wetsuit and hoodie on, raising the spirits and saving the lives of all he touched that night. Kathy Cregg said “out of the black, with embers raining down, across the torrent came Dylan.” And as Kathy tells it, Dylan pulled up onto her steps with his surfboard and asked in a calm manner, “You guys need help?” After Dylan assisted with the six people in that house getting across to safety, Mike McDonald said, “I looked at Dylan and he looked at me and I knew where he was going, the fire was making its way down the block and there were more people in desperate situations.” One of them was 12 year old Lauren Marten. She, her brother and father were forced to evacuate their house. Lauren, wearing a hat over her face to protect her from the embers, had a broken arm and was trying to walk through the high water and debris and embers, holding her broken arm over her head so she wouldn’t get her cast wet. When she reached the corner and stepped off the curb she was totally submerged and jumped back on the sidewalk. She called to her father that she was not going to make it. Her father Ray Marten tells it, “ at this point I didn’t know what I was going to do, but out of nowhere came a man on a surfboard with his Continued on page 20

Jacob Armstead was, by his mother’s account, a normal 11-year-old boy. He was a straight A student, played football for the Rockaway Ravens and had plans to enroll at the Waterside School for Leadership. But his life changed when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of stomach cancer, in July. One small tumor had grown into the size of a cantaloupe in about a month, his mother, Odalys Figueroa, said. “Sometimes he was sluggish after practice, but I said, ‘Ok, that’s normal,’” she said. “Then it was a domino effect – 1, 2, 3. It was a lot.” He’s already undergone three operations, and now he goes to chemotherapy several times a week at Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Northshore LIJ. Those days last anywhere between six and and thirteen hours, Figueroa said. She said it’s like having a full time job, which leaves her little time for her actual job as a bartender at Applebee’s in Five Towns.

Jacob’s treatment is expected to last more than a year, during which time he’ll continue chemotherapy, undergo a few more surgeries and may undergo radiation treatment. Figueroa said she still works shifts at Applebee’s when she can, but, between homeschooling her son, spending long days at the hospital and taking care of her other two children, her job has taken a backseat. She expressed her gratitude toward her fiance and her family members who have become her support network, but the situation is still taking its toll financially. That’s why she set up a Gofundme campaign: She’s trying to raise $10,000 to help with gas money, bills and the other expenses she’ll encounter that are associated with raising a sick child. “I’ve fallen behind a little,” she said. “I want to make sure we keep a roof over our head.” To read more about Jacob or to contribute to the campaign, visit http://www.gofundme.com/g258x0.

1st NYC Longboard Challenge a Success! The day broke with great anticipation for a new surfing event for Rockaway, but aspirations were sidelined when the ocean was as flat as a pancake. Organizers knew a wave would appear at low tide but would it be contestable. Around 11am little waves started to appear and by 12:45pm the contest was a serious go! The camaraderie on the beach was spectacular, with local surfers mixing it up and meeting surfers from all over Long Island and even New Jersey. There were some stand out performers in all divisions and some fantastic hooting and hollering while the surfers put on a great show in challenging conditions. To say that this inaugural longboard event was a success would down play what was really achieved, a very first for an independent longboard

event for the Rockaway community. There are more ideas fostering for a Rockaway Cold Water Classic surfing event and even a seasonal comp, where competitors would need to surf in every season to claim the final prize. So stay tuned here for more news on this. Every surfing event takes enormous effort to pull it all together. Huge props go to Brandon D’Leo, Conrad Karl and Nigel Louis who worked with myself and the RBSA for the infrastructure, but also massive props to Jimmy Dowd of St. James and Jill Weber of the Parks Department for their gigantic efforts to make this happen. Davina Grincevicius did an amazing job with our new logo and all other sundry designing. But if it wasn’t for the pure professionalism of Rick Anthony, who has probably marshaled more surfing events

than people hosting dinner parties, this event would never have been so smooth. And then there was Will Hallett Sr., who with his hilarious announcing of the blow-by-blow action added such a great layer to a great day of camaraderie. What surfers do for one another is almost unique in the world, where local and global surfers respect and honor our brethren who have fallen. One type of honor is with paddleouts and ceremonies. At the end of the contest there was paddle-out and collective semi-circle of participants on the beach to honor Dylan Smith, one of our local heroes, who had a street named after him that same day. Highly emotional and beautifully lit as the day came to a close, it reminds us to cherish what we have, the ocean, the waves and one another. Well, at least for most of us.

In the past two weeks, I’ve had the good fortune of running into two people who are who are handling major roles in our way, way too slow, Sandy recovery: Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanagh and Build it Back director Amy Peterson. Although in the past, the City has hired people they call the Commissioner of NYC Parks, Liam Kavanaugh is the guy who does all the work, or at least the hard work. As much as I, a beach activist and community board member, bang heads with Liam about our Parks recovery, you have to give him major credit. He shows up!!! Meeting after meeting he is there taking the justified blows from the great people of the Rockaway peninsula! The same can be said for Amy Peterson, the Build it Back Director,

who took over a Sandy recovery program that was in a downward spiral from its inception. She shows up!!! Not only does she show up, she has done an enormous job of Rapidly Repairing Build it Back! I ran into Amy Peterson at the Sandy Job fair in Far Rockaway and Liam Kananaugh at my favorite lunch spot called the Aroma Café. What I found incredible about both these encounters, both Liam and Amy truly wanted to hear what I had to say. It was nice to get a chance to speak to them away from the “limelight” of meetings, where they are being pulled in ten different directions. It was good for me to express what I had on my mind without having 20 questions and comments to try to rattle off in less that 2 minutes. Continued on Page 27

What Would Dylan Do? Continued from page 11 wetsuit and hoodie.” Dylan put Lauren on his board and when he was getting ready to take her to safety Ray said “Who are you?” Dyl replied “It’s Dylan smith” and as Ray puts it he said to Dylan, “I can’t thank you enough” and Dylan just smirked at him and took his daughter to safety. Long time resident of sixty years, Patricia Fullerton , was holding onto her cane and a chain linked fence fighting the raging waters. She was trying to get to her nieces house around the corner, as her own block burned. As she puts it “Out of the darkness, magically appeared a young man on a surf board.” He took her hand and pulled her up. She expressed her fears about her weak heart and he held her tighter and as she says, “his voice was so calm and his demeanor was so calm that I said to myself “I can do this.” Although she did not want to appear in the film she wrote a five page letter describing her experiences that night, she wanted people to know how Dylan saved her life. In the letter she tells how she wanted to thank him so she crocheted him an afghan and as she put it “with

thanks in every stitch. “ She completed it a week before Christmas but decided to wait to give it to him on Christmas day She was heart broken and collapsed when her son told her the tragic news of Dylans’ death, two days before Christmas. These stories are just the people that I was able to contact for the documentary, but since its release others have contacted me because they too were saved by Dylan. I am not sure how many he saved that night, he wanted to downplay it to family and friends. But I realize what a truly heroic, unselfish, dangerous thing he did that night, and it is Dylan’s spirit that makes our community one of the greatest neighborhoods to live in, in New York and the world. I made my documentary so Dylan will not be forgotten. Naming the street that burned on the night of Superstorm Sandy Dylan Smith Way, will keep his heroic acts and memory alive for generations to come, hopefully inspiring future generations to be the selfless neighbor he was. If you’d like to see the documentary it is on Youtube and Facebook, called “Seven Miles to Shore.

Life Long Benefits By Helen Kilgallen THE GUEST HOUSE: “This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they are a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whatever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from be-

yond. “ --Jelaluddin Rumi Imagine being strong enough to listen and follow the words of the great sage, Rumi. It is not easy but we must somehow try when life doesn’t run so smoothly. They say we cannot see light if not for the darkness. We could not find happiness without struggles in our life. There is a reason for everything even if we have no idea why something bad happens to us. No matter how much you prepare for the worst you are never quite ready. Breezy’s 50 Shades Of Grey of our den. We called it the mermaid cove. I remember countless mornings waking up in the cove to a room full of Spanishspeaking construction workers chatting and working about two feet from where I was sleeping. At first, it was startling, and then after a few weeks, it became completely normal. I would get up, say hello to the boys, make coffee, and start my day. In terms of privacy, Hurricane Sandy has broken my walls down drastically. Hurricane Sandy tested our boundaries and pushed us into situations we may have never come across. When you and four family members are staying in a twobedroom apartment, cuddling is the only option, and it’s not a half bad one. Sharing a coat, shoes, and well… everything, becomes a necessity too. What’s mine is yours, and yours, and yours, and yours. With time, I stopped thinking about the things that I lost in the storm, and started thinking about all of the new moments that I was able to create with the people I love. It was the little things that meant the most; a hug, or an old photograph, or a really fun night of drinking wine and playing board games in a house with no electricity. In those moments of fear and loss and stress, privacy was the very last thing I wanted. Over the past couple years, the strength that we got, we got from one another. (Laura Cryan is 23, a writer, bartender, and traveling ESL teacher, author of the children’s book “Whalemina.” currently resides in Breezy Point).

By Laura Cryan It’s been two years since Hurricane Sandy tore through our peninsula, and I think it’s safe to say that things have finally been looking up. There are exciting prospects to discuss now… like our new homes. In Breezy Point, we went from a cozy community filled with humble houses, to ground zero, to the land of the giants, all in two years. The quaint and unique homes that used to line the walks and lanes of Breezy Point have been replaced with matching castles that stretch up to the sky. Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled that Breezy is rebuilding, it just gets a little confusing sometimes. In “the wedge” where over 100 houses burnt down, a lot of the new properties have the same exact dimensions, same white railings, and same exact blue-grey or slate-grey siding. It’s Breezy Point’s Fifty Shades Of Grey. I almost walked into someone else’s house instead of my grandma’s the other day. That being said, it is a Breezy Point tradition to walk right into other people’s homes, sometimes deliberately and sometimes accidentally. For a private community, Breezy has never been the most private place. On a random Sunday morning, you are bound to have four neighbors in your living room before noon. About a year ago, my house was still making its comeback after the hurricane. As we were in the reconstruction process, I no longer had a room, so I slept in a little nook tucked behind a wall in the corner

Election Day is Tuesday This Tuesday, November 4, is Election Day. New York State Senate and NYS Assembly, Governor and Congressional choices will be on the ballot. Also, the following are ballot proposals. Revising State’s Redistricting Procedure: The proposed amendment to sections 4 and 5 and addition of new section 5-b to Article 3 of the State Constitution revises the redistricting procedure for state legislative and congressional districts. The proposed amendment establishes a redistricting

commission every 10 years beginning in 2020, with two members appointed by each of the four legislative leaders and two members selected by the eight legislative appointees; prohibits legislators and other elected officials from serving as commissioners; establishes principles to be used in creating districts; requires the commission to hold public hearings on proposed redistricting plans; subjects the commission’s redistricting plan to legislative enactment; provides that the legislature may only amend the re-

The SMART SCHOOLS BOND ACT OF 2014 The SMART SCHOOLS BOND ACT OF 2014, as set forth in section one of part B of chapter 56 of the laws of 2014, authorizes the sale of state bonds of up to two billion dollars ($2,000,000,000) to provide access to classroom technology and high-speed internet connectivity to equalize opportunities for children to learn, to add classroom space to expand high-quality prekindergarten programs, to replace classroom trailers with permanent instructional space, and to install high-tech smart security features in schools. Shall the proposed amendment be approved? Permitting Electronic Distribution of State Legislative Bills: The proposed amendment to section 14 of Article 3 of the State Constitution would allow electronic distribution of a state legislative bill to satisfy the constitutional requirement that a bill be printed and on the desks of state legislators at least three days before the Legislature votes on it. Sandy Bonus Riding the Wave of Interest By MJ Diehl Pondering one’s existence is an activity typically associated with the heavily- bearded German philosophers of the 1880’s, rather than the cute, perpetually sun-tanned girls of the late 1980’s— unless, of course, they happened to live in Rockaway Beach. You see, B.S. (before Sandy) very few people outside of Rockaway, actually believed Rockaway existed. A pristine shoreline free of dirty mattresses, syringes and hamburger rappers; immaculate streets which begged a child to be shoeless for entire summer vacation (let future stilettos be damned); a cavalcade of sea-creatures that only Sponge Bob or the Natural History Museum could compete withâ€Śâ€œOh, come on!! This place can’t be real, let alone in New York City,â€? is what I heard time and time again from my poor, misguided Brooklyn and Manhattan school friends who thought “clutteredâ€? Coney Island, “lameâ€? Long Island, or the “haughtyâ€? Hamptons was their only beach retreat in NYC. So, I spent most of my school years, outside of Rockaway, convincing people of Rockaway’s “existence.â€? And, while I was quite

convincing (personal tours, tasteful bikinis, and other visual aids were often involved), it is interesting that, despite all my efforts, an eco-tragedy like Sandy, finally put us on the cultural map. And, now that we’re there, let’s stay there! We got their attention. Let’s make it work! Let’s ride this wave of interest. After Sandy (A.S.) I’ve been thrilled to see a new Rockaway emerging. A Rockaway where one can attend an art exhibit or concert that doesn’t require a “Life’s a Beachâ€? lawnplaque‌A Rockaway where date-night op-

tions are not restricted to Dunkin’ Donuts or MacDonald’s‌a Rockaway that is not only aesthetically invigorating, but culturally interesting and inviting—to people around the world. The Rockaway Artist’s Alliance, Rockaway Taco, Uma’s, PS1 MOMA were among the first to make waves. Nevertheless, I sense a counterproductive undercurrent— a riptide of resentment or insensitivity. “Are the hipsters exploiting Rockaway?â€? “Do the locals support the new business I’ve brought through my investment?â€? And, my only question: Will everyone involved respect the past, enhance the future, and ride this riptide of interest in the right direction? I can only hope so and will do my best to make it happen. While I currently live in Manhattan, I’ve always got one flip-flop firmly planted in Rockaway Beach, my hometown. Rockaway Gets, Lends A Helping Hand Through Free Flea By Bianca Fortis Before Hurricane Sandy, Marissa Bernowitz wasn’t the type to volunteer or give donations, she said. She hadn’t even taken the time to get to know her neighbors. And although she was a victim of the storm as well, she realized she was privileged because some of her possessions stayed dry even after the floodwaters receded. “People that I see every day were outside in the freezing cold with nothing on their backs,” she said. “My son saw another kid without shoes and wanted to give him his. So I said OK.” Bernowitz has subsequently become an advocate for helping others and is one of the founders of the Free Flea. The Flea began

as a relief site, located at the St. Camillus School, immediately after the storm. But when the gym floor needed to be remodeled, the group had to leave. They bounced around between a few different locations, including a temporary storefront until it had to undergo renovations through the Build it Back program. And although the needs of Rockaway community members is not quite as immediate as right after the storm, there is still a demand for supplies, according to Bernowitz. For each of the women involved, personal issues became a priority and the market now happens once a month, rather than weekly as it did before. They also work on specific projects, such as providing Thanksgiving dinner for those

it forward so much,” she said. “People’s mentality has changed so much for the better.” The women behind the Free Flea are also still working on future plans for the project. Bernowitz said she would like to return to serving hot meals once a weekly and even provide opportunities for counseling. She would also like to work out of a storefront again and believes it could be a self-sustaining operation. But for now she and the others will continue volunteering their time to fulfill their mission of helping those in need, whether in Rockaway or around the world. “People just want to help,” she said. “We just want to help.” For more information about the Flea, visit https://www.facebook. com/WeeklyFreeFleaMarket.

And their coverage area has expanded: they have helped with relief efforts in many other disaster-stricken areas, including Oklahoma, which was hit by a tornado in 2013, and the Philippines, which was hit hard by a typhoon almost a year ago. Bernowitz has traveled as far as the Bronx to bring someone supplies, she said. “If stranger calls in the middle of the night and says “the heat is out in my house, I need a blanket’ – I’m gonna go,” she said. She nearly went to Oklahoma herself and said she would have flown to the Philippines if she didn’t have a toddler to take care of. Immediately after the storm, supplies came from around the country. But now, materials come largely from within the community. “The people of Rockaway pay

Church Seeks Help Before Winter Hits

Official Conversation‌ Continued from Page 16 What I told them was simple: Put themselves in the sandals of the people of the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel. I tried to get them to understand what life is like having no windows in the basement and facing a third winter of using temporary heaters to keep the pipes from freezing or worse. Put themselves in the place of someone who has no home at all and yet is still paying a mortgage while paying rent for a temporary apartment. I tried to get them to understand that our boardwalk, whether designed that way or not, acted as protection for our neighborhoods from the ocean. Baffle walls are inadequate in Belle Harbor and Neponsit! I tried to help Amy understand that it’s not just Build it Back that is driving us crazy, it’s the lack of a

boardwalk and parks along Shore front Pkwy! I tried to help Liam understand that it’s not just an unfinished boardwalk, lack of parks and inadequate protection in Belle Harbor and Neponsit and the entire bay side that is driving us crazy! I let Liam know that Build it Back is weighing heavy on our efforts to move forward. I tried to stress to both Liam and Amy how devastating the termination of our Rockaway ferry will be to our growth and development as a peninsula. I asked both how they would feel if their children had to use a trailer for their library for three years I think it’s time for The Commissioners of every City, State, and Federal Agency to come out to the Rockaway Peninsula and walk eleven miles in our sandals! Maybe then they will feel our pain!

A Rockaway church is seeking community help for a new heating system so its members don’t have to spend another winter in the cold. During Hurricane Sandy, 11 feet of water poured in through the windows of the Macedonia Baptist Church basement and seeped in through the ground, destroying the flooring, the electrical system and the heating system. For about a month and a half after the storm, members the church held its services out of PS 42, just down the street. Services began again inside the church. But last year, there was no heat to keep members warm during the brutal winter months. They managed “by the Grace of God, some space heaters and members wearing their coats during the service, according to the Rev. Evan Gray. “Folks are just faithful, he said. The heating system is expected to cost about $45,000. Gray is just focused for now on getting the funds to fix the heat. Thousands of dollars have already gone toward renovating the church and Gray foresees having to put at least $130,000 to complete the remodeling. Part of that will go toward the floor of the basement, which was completely torn up by the floodwaters. The basement was used for community meetings, Gray said.

The floor of the basement is among the next which had been used for community meetings, is completely torn up, and will likely cost about $50,000 to fix. Gray said all of the churches in Rockaway were adversely affected by the storm. “If members of a church are hurting, that’s further pressure on us as we are accustomed to helping others, he said. “It’s been challenging to say the least. Gray pointed out that the federal government doesn’t provide rebuilding funds for houses of worship, which leaves them on their own for finding the money. “We were there for the community before the federal government did anything, he said. “And then we were left out in the cold. They look for us to do more and more for the community, but there’s nobody helping us. Membership now stands at about 230 people, quite a drop from the 400 it had before the storm. People continue attending the church because of “their love for God and knowing that somehow the Lord is going to make a way, Gray said. “They come to church to worship a good God in the cold. But there are people living under parkways and in cardboard boxes in the same cold. So even in that element, we are still quite blessed. The church is located at 330 Beach 67th St. The phone number there is (347) 246-9560.

By Peter Galvin, MD Well it’s here – flu season, that is. Yes, I know, so is Ebola. But Ebola poses a threat mostly to healthcare workers. An outbreak of Ebola in the general population is extremely unlikely. Influenza on the other hand is a more realistic threat. In an average year about 30,000 to 40,000 people die of the flu and its complications. By far the worst year on record was 1918 when a world-wide flu pandemic killed 20 million. Now almost 100 years later a disaster on that scale is extremely unlikely given the advances in medical science and the overall

The picture I paint above is the basis for what music is today. There was a time when music had style and charisma. Unfortunately those days are “slip sliding away” as “the millennials” don’t even attempt to grasp what real music is. When I was coming up, I feel like we all had an appreciation for the oldies. Our idols were influenced by Elvis or Hendrix or The Beatles. Not to mention the legends they were in their own right. There is no relation from today’s up and coming to what might be considered oldies to them and, as a result, our society is suffering. Feast your eyes on this important news. The latest in the music world has been a Twitter battle between Deadmau5 and Paris Hilton. This is a guy that hides under the cover of a Mickey Mouse helmet that is pissed off that Air Head Heiress is collecting $1 mil per gig. If this isn’t the pot calling the kettle black, then Kevin just stop letting me rant. Why is this even news in the first place? Please both of you, get a horse, go hide in the mountains and stop bothering people. Here’s the point, the forefathers of turntables are turning in their grave, if they are in one. I know we can do better than what we have now. Some may say I’m hating. I say I’m hating on fake and fraud and I’m calling them all out. But don’t forget to follow me @ DJBeefchip on all social media for news on my upcoming Your Smoked & I Have You Fooled Tour.

over, and the guys you bought your $150 ticket from are going to hand me a check of $100,000. With a straight face, I will accept this check, hop on my private plane and repeat this process tomorrow. Questions? Yes you in the back. DJ Beefchip, is this real life? Sir, it’s pretty hard to believe but yes this is real life. I have you fooled into thinking I have talent. I surround myself with people that I pay, that I slap five with while the music plays. This is in an effort to make me look cool and make it appear that people want to be around me, next question. DJ Beefchip, who are some of your colleagues? I usually flail my arms in an uncontrollable fashion with DJ’s like Steve Aoki, David Guetta, Deadmau5, and Calvin Harris is to name a few and yes they have you fooled too. Next! DJ Beefchip, what ever happened to mixing music with Beats Per Minute synchronization? Ma’am, the working man is a sucker, that’s a dying form of our art. Guys that have talent like Jazzy Jeff, Hip Hop Healy, DJ Fat Bass Ted, DJ Mouse, DJ Kevy Kev, and DJ Timmy Tubbs have too much integrity for our game. Though my skill was influenced by them, I just found it much easier to be a fake. Back to reality, Beefchip and Team Cyclops scratch their head often. This is one that leaves us dumbfounded. Some of these high priced producers/DJ’s make decent tunes. But for the most part folks, it is all an act, and your kids are the victims.

VOTE NO ....... Your Vote Against the Incumbents

CHANGE IS NEEDED, AND IT IS NEEDED NOW!

Young children love to sing the fun song, “If You’re Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands”, when they’re sharing and enjoying experiences together, but can we honestly say that our children’s future is looking better at this point? Now, in these tense times of unease with national security, xpublic health emergency concerns, economic stagnation, and severe distrust of politics in general, can American voters, including New Yorkers, sing a happy tune as they go to vote on November 4, 2014? The answer for a large majority of voters will unfortunately be, “NO!” With disappointment and distrust of our current state and national leadership growing by the day, and recent polls showing that the large majority of Americans believe we are moving in the wrong direction as a nation, now, more than ever, is a time to stand tall and make a statement to the politicians elected by the people, and supposedly, for the people, to honestly represent “the people”, and their best interests, not some political agenda or ideology.

CHANGE IS NEEDED AND IT IS NEEDED NOW! Where is our Rockaway Ferry? Where is our Boardwalk? Where is our Hospital? What is the plan for our National Park? Where are the Jobs promised?

Public service is supposed to be a privilege, not an entitlement. I’m running for State Senate because I’m tired of career politicians, like Joe Addabbo, who have been in office too long and take us for granted. Rockaway deserves better. AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Water temperature 65*F- At the entrance to New York harbor (outside) Welcome Rockaway anglers to the fall run of 2014. Well, Rockaway we did it, we finally had two great days in a row for the weather in one weekend. This is the most exciting time of the year for fishing. The big fish are moving into the surf and bay in search of food as water temperatures drop, signaling them to feed. Anglers also have the best beach access at this time of year as beach goers have mostly gone for the season. Don’t underestimate the quiet back creeks either. That small creek that you caught snappers in all summer can come alive with the chopping jaws of 15 pound blue fish chasing bunker that are back there trying to evade the blue fish blitz suddenly now on them. Now is the time to get

out those HUGE expensive lures that you bought. You are convinced that monster 50 lb. striped bass are now going to commit suicide instantly on these new lures that you have. It’s more likely that your new expensive lure will become “ONE” with the abandoned pole that you wrapped it around while casting it out from the pier 50 yards away (at least that’s what always happens to me). I’m still not sure if they make those artful sparkling fishing lures to attract fish, or fishermen’s wallets. I always bite and buy the lure. Some lures get used only once, they caught a big fish and are put away. Some lures are handed to you from your grandfather on that “Special Day” that you both went out fishing. Some lures are given as gifts from your dad or uncle, they have sentimental value and never make it out of the package because, you don’t

want to ever lose them ! Any large swimming plug, or “Popper”, “Striper Swiper” (Reg. T.M.) will work well in the surf (or bay) at this time of year. Be prepared to lose one, or two lures. Keep in mind that some people still use the water for recreation. Be respectful of that and move to another spot, the beach is BIG. When you are done fishing for the day, please bring all of your refuse with you and put it in the proper receptacles. Be respectful and you’ll always be welcomed back to the beach. Keep in mind that others use the beach, and the ONLY thing that you should be leaving behind in the sand are your footprints when you leave. Now go out and catch some BIG fish, and enjoy the warm sunshine, cool air, sparkling water, and BEAUTIFUL Beach ! Jamaica bay: Big Ron’s Bait and Tackle, We checked in with Captain Ron over at Big Ron’s bait and tackle on Cross bay Blvd. in Howard Beach. Capt. Ron tells us that there is some bass action in the area. Porgies have just about all left but, some are still present in the bay. The black fish are in but, still a tad on the small size with many throwbacks among the action. Flounder are in the bay but New York State D.E.C. won’t let you keep any of them. Jamaica bay and outside: Tom’s Wave service station/ Bait and Tackle on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park, We called the shop today and

Eileen Carroll and Jen Lang get high hook at the Annual Beach 140 Fishing Tournament. we spoke with “Mike” who has some good news. The black fish action is on the bite right now off of B.C.H.S.. Mike said that the green crabs work the best at nailing the “Tog”, and they have plenty of them at the shop. Mike also said that their has been confirmed striped bass caught on the beach recently. The striped bass were caught using bait. The bait offered (and taken), were clams, and bunker. That’s it anglers, the next few weekends is when it all happens. Let’s hope for some great weather !
