Churchgoer Flipped Off Chains Himself To Pew By Bianca Fortis A quiet, one-man protest took place at a Rockaway church this week. Flip Mullen, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales, chained himself to a church pew on Tuesday in protest of new policies enacted by the parish, preventing him from continuing a tradition of daily prayer that he began seven years ago. Mullen began his daily prayer ritual because his granddaughter was diagnosed with a rare form of children’s cancer at the age of 11 months. Soon after, Mullen, who said he had not previously been a particularly religious man, discovered the “Three O’Clock Prayer to the Divine Mercy.” Three O’Clock is said to be the time that Jesus died on the cross. Mullen prayed every day at St. Francis de Sales; shortly thereafter, his granddaughter appeared to be cured of the cancer. She is now doing fine, he said. “I thanked the doctor,” Mullen said. “And he said, ‘Don’t thank me – thank God.’” Which is what Mullen has done: he continued to say prayers of gratitude every day at 3 p.m. That is, until the church began
closing shortly after morning mass. Mullen said he was told that it is the church’s policy to close early. He said other parishioners are also frustrated with some of the new policy decisions at the church. At least one person noted frustration because the church was locked on September 11th. Many groups can no longer use the parish as a meeting place, and many parishioners have left altogether, he said. So on Tuesday morning he decided to chain himself to a church pew, specifically to fight against the early closure. “Unfortunately, it had to come to this,” Mullen said, while chained. Eventually the police came to speak to Mullen and asked him to leave. He agreed to go, rather than be arrested. But the fight was not over for him. He said he and other frustrated parishioners were planning an upcoming rally, a move he thinks will bring about more attention to the situation. According to the Diocese of Brooklyn, of which St. Francis de Sales is a part, the change in closing time was made as a result of issues within the building. “After multiple issues with van-
dalism, the Parish ran notices in the weekly bulletin letting people know this change would come into effect before it did,” a spokesperson for the Diocese said. “The
decision was made in the best interest of the safety of everyone involved and for the greater security of the building.”

Fall Fest! Beach 116th Is The Place To Be Sunday By Bianca Fortis

Looks like sunny in the sixties. The weather outlook is just right for Sunday, perfect for the upcoming Fall Festival, hosted by the Beach 116th Street Partnership, according to its executive director, Krzysztof Sadlej. The festivals that the Partnership hosts provide an opportunity to showcase local businesses to the Rockaway community, as well as other New Yorkers. “In October the business season slows down as there are fewer beachgoers,” Sadlej said. “It’s a day for the people of Rockaway to come out. We have the opportunity to shut down the street and use it as a public space for one day.” Several local bands will play during the day and there will be a special performance by local strongman Mike Greenstein, 93, who will pull his personal Buick by his teeth. Greenstein, whose father was legendary strongman Joe Greenstein, made two appearances earlier this year on the TV show America’s Got Talent. “We want to bring the community back to the community,” Mark
Mina, a board member and the director of events for the Partnership, said. “We want to let everyone know they can come home now.” Mina said the community held festivals in the past past, but those have faded away over time. And so now the Partnership plans to make two festivals, including the Fall Festival, annual events. In June the Partnership hosted the Poland’s International Children’s Day Festival, which saw about 10,000 visitors, Sadlej said. He said it was so successful due in part to the many beachgoers who exit the A train at Beach 116th Street. “The train ends here, so people happened to be passing
by and they lingered,” he said. “It gives them a reason to stop. Maybe they stay 15 minutes or three hours – it doesn’t matter. It gives them a reason to stay longer than they normally would.” At the Fall Festival there will be a beer garden and food options range from sausage and peppers to fried Twinkies and Oreos to ice cream. There will also be a raffle for gift certificates and other items from local businesses, face painting and artists set up along the street. And there will be items for sale, including pumpkins and plants. “It’s going to be a good time,” Mina said.

We’ll Always Have The Bronx then me, - -it’s his first game? Yeah, I said. The guy pushed the tickets towards me, just give me $25 for both, he said. You pay for yours, the kid’s is free. We sat about ten rows in, third base side. The Yankee shortstop was close enough that he could hear us call his name. And the Yankee shortstop hit a homerun that day. And the Yankee shortstop that day was named Tony Fernandez. Bet you thought I was gonna name another guy. Nah, he’d come later. A long-ago owner of the Yankees, Jacob Ruppert, said his idea of a perfect afternoon was for the
Yankees to “score 8 runs in the first inning then slowly pull away.” Our perfect day was finding ourselves in seats that costs $25 each, watching the Yankees win, and then while waiting outside, letting the traffic thin, coming across Yankee outfielder Paul O’Neill about to get into his car. Somehow in a crowd of fans O’Neill decided to sign an autograph for my son before climbing into his car and driving off. That perfect day in 1995 was the foundation of a father-son life commitment to the Yankees. It was the all the more perfect because Number 2, Derek Jeter, would join the roster the same year. Another perfect day came last Thursday. Son, now 25, and I went to Jeter’s last home game. Funny, tickets were no longer $25. I could’ve easily been talked into watching it from the couch at home but my son said, c’mon, we gotta…. And he was right. We weren’t just saying so long to Jeter, we were marking the years and acknowledging a bond. As kids grow, especially through the teen years, communication can be a struggle. But no matter how hard it was to communicate sometimes, we always had Jeter. We could always talk about Jeter and the Yankees. Jeter was the guy for both of us. He was the bond because he was
young and cool but old school, too. Seven thousand and ten days later since that first Yankee game we were in The Stadium again. And it deserved to be called The Stadium because on this night the new place had the feel and energy of the old place. It felt like Game 7 of a World Series. Ask anyone, they’ll tell ya. There’s not much to add here about how the dramatics unfolded that night but it was such an exclamation point for father and son. With people standing on seats and obscuring any kind of decent view I watched Jeter come to plate between a guy’s arm and his body, just a sliver of a view. Jeter swung. I couldn’t follow the ball. But I did see Jeter running. I could only follow him between body parts in the crowd. He turned around first base, his head turned towards home, and then he leapt into the air. His joyous face framed by delirious Yankee fans. Father and son hugged each other, hugged strangers. After the game, on the walk to the car, we gushed about it all. It was so perfect it didn’t seem real. But it was. Words in a column can’t capture a speck of how it felt or what it meant. And yea, as many people said, it was like a movie. In fact, maybe a riff on a line from Casablanca sums it up. We’ll always have Derek Jeter.

Following pro sports is such a dumb thing to do. But then it’s not. In 1995 I took my six year old son to his first Yankee game. I hadn’t been to a game in a few years and didn’t know how much tickets cost. A guy and his wife approached me and said they had a couple of extra box seat tickets and they were selling them at face value. He said they were $25 each – that’s twenty five! –and I couldn’t believe it. My shoulders sagged, twenty five? For each? Goldfeder: Ferry Fee Can Float Ferry Although the Rockaway ferry service was not included in the final city budget, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is continuing the fight and calling on Mayor de Blasio to implement a fee on the Staten Island ferry, for non-residents, that will generate enough revenue to create permanent ferry service for southern Queens and Rockaway families. In 2006, the Independent Budget Office conducted a study and found charging a “tourist-only” Staten Island Ferry fare or a MetroCard swipe for non-borough residents would generate millions in revenue for the city. Goldfeder recently sent a letter to Mayor de Blasio requesting he

The good news is The City will be getting another $200 million dollars for the boardwalk repair from FEMA. The curious news is Parks and EDC never indicated they were seeking additional funds beyond the $270 million they had budgeted. We heard a lot about how things (such as ramps) weren’t in the budget. With extra money on the way, we can’t wait to hear the reasons why they can’t speed up the job. *** Not that we want to be cynical but just how is EDC collecting ferry ridership numbers? A lot of passengers hand over cash, get a ticket and hand the ticket to another guy. That’s it. No scanning, no receipts, no real accounting by the looks of it. Let’s just say, hmmm…. *** The next Community Board 14 meeting is Tuesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. *** With new FEMA money coming in, the boardwalk rebuild is a half a billion dollar job. Enormous. You think the Parks Commissioner would take great interest. Well, he’s been to
Rockaway once. But every Friday he’s in Cambridge Massachusetts teaching a class at Harvard. We’re wondering if the name of the course is, How To Get Great Part-Time Gigs. *** Maybe you’ll be part of a study. Researchers at Columbia University are documenting the recovery from Sandy in the Rockaways and in other parts of NYC. They are conducting a survey of Rockaway residents to document the impacts of the storm and the assistance that people in the Rockaways got, for relief and for recovery. The objective is to understand which efforts were useful and effective and which were not so that the lessons can help to improve this recovery and speed up recovery from any future storms. *** As Rockaway waits for jetties, the sand will keep seeping away (or be gone in a storm swoop). And as much as the extra sand is welcome, there is a major flaw in the whole sand replenishment process. Fort Tilden will not be getting any new sand and will remain an open door for rushing water. We got a blah, blah, blah statement from Chuck Schumer on promising to
keep pushing for more sand (i.e. money). We wonder if it’s money or certain higher-ups in the National Parks Service just want Rockaway to wash away. Seriously. *** Well, certain words will live in infamy. “This time it’s different,” were words spoken by Dan Falt of the Army Corps of Engineers just a couple of months after Sandy. He meant there would be plenty of money and plenty of sand to protect Rockaway. Dan, good guy and Rockaway resident, wishes he could have those words back, we bet. *** Ferry advocates might turn their 11th hour attention to the Governor. He’s the one who could save the ferry. He’s got control over NY Rising Money – Sandy relief money that could be used to keep the ferry going for at least a couple of years. Want to ask what the governor is doing with NY Rising Money? No reason to close the umbrellas. It’s just a mindset! And I’m wondering if now that I’ve contributed $200 to the City of New York and I’m sure there are others in Rockaway who have also been caught in that speed trap, maybe they can use some of that extra money to extend the ferry service and also include service on the weekends as well--I won’t feel so bad if I know my money is going for a good cause. From now on I’m only driving down Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

We drove to the Broad Channel Station, only to be told there is no train service, and we had to get a bus. When I asked the token clerk “Why no Service” he said: I don’t know.... We went to the bus stop, and waited, as six buses passed us by. They were full to the rafters. Three more passed by with signs saying: OUT OF SERVICE. At this point I was pleading with my wife to go back home, as the aggravation was zapping my strength. Just then, a Q53 bus pulled in and took us to Rockaway Boulevard. I asked the bus driver, what happened? He also did not know! We arrived in Lower Manhattan at 3:30 p.m., three hour trip. We had a bite to eat and headed back home by train & Q53. We arrived in Rockaway at 8:30 p.m. It’s amazing that in these times of instant communication, that you still can’t get a response from transit employees regarding delays. Although my wife and I are not regular commuters any longer, this reinforces the need for alternate transportation. The Ferry really seems like a great idea.

The City’s Part-Time Approach Sometimes news is buried or quickly forgotten. Did you know the current NYC Parks Commissioner has a job in Cambridge, Massachusetts? Just about every Friday, Mitchell Silver, the Parks commissioner, travels to Harvard to teach a class in Urban Planning and Design from 2 – 5 p.m. The mayor knew of his out-oftown job when he chose Silver to run the Parks Department. It got barely a mention in the news when Silver was tapped. Now, we’re not suggesting Silver’s treating the Parks job as a part-time gig but since he’s been Commissioner he’s been to Cambridge, Mass a lot more than he’s been to Rockaway where a major Parks project, the boardwalk rebuild, is underway. The boardwalk rebuild is probably as big as any Parks job since the days of Robert Moses. The enormity of it seems lost on the Mayor. It seems just perfect that he’s okay with the Commissioner skipping town on Fridays. There is other news that was almost buried. A Capital New York report on September 19th revealed that the City will be getting $200 million MORE dollars from FEMA for the boardwalk rebuild than originally expected. This is, of course, great news. We think. The City has managed to botch the delivery of the news which makes us more than a little wary. Although they confirmed the Capital New York report they were cautious: As soon as we have a final agreement with FEMA, we will eagerly spread the word. Funny, but we’ve never heard about how additional monies might come along. When residents asked for ramps or better beach access they were told, the money wasn’t in the budget. Never did Parks or EDC say more money might be coming and allow for additional boardwalk features. Which is what makes a comment by the Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver so curious. The Wave got its hand on an internal memo from Silver to City Hall: We continue to be concerned that it will be a political liability for
the Administration in the Rockaways when the full $480 million FEMA reimbursement funding for the boardwalk becomes known, if the City is unable to announce funding for additional boardwalk elements and rebuilding the destroyed recreational zone. Political liability? Where’s the liability in getting more money? The Rockaway Times asked about that. The response: The Commissioner regrets using the phrase you reference when what he meant to stress were community concerns, which we share, about how this money is to be allocated. Whatever. The other part of the memo that makes us wonder is this: if the City is unable to announce funding for additional boardwalk elements. Unable to announce? Here’s what the City should announce: The extra money will be used to SPEED things up. To hire more people, to get the damn thing finished. The City is already using language that the new found money will allow them to “adhere to the schedule.” Huh? They need extra money to stick to a schedule!? Yes, that’s what they’re saying: “The funds (will be used) to ensure the schedules shared with the public are met. “ Stop right there! The schedules they’ve shared with the public are absurd! (They’ve set the boardwalk completion date for 2017). Are they really saying the extra money will help them stick to a turtle’s pace? Unbelievable. Mr. Mayor, Mr. Commissioner, there’s $480 million to be spent. If there’s political liability here, it’s in your part-time approach.

They Forgot To Mention $200 Million For the past year and a half the local Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel Civics have been working with NYC Parks and EDC in planning the recovery from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, particularly in regards to our parks, beaches and boardwalk. Each and every civic leader, resident and elected official has been insisting on one common theme in the rebuilding process meetings. . . DON”T UNDERESTIMATE THE COST OF OUR RECOVERY! Time and time again we’ve asked Parks Commissioner of Queens Lewandoski and NYC Parks Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanagh: How much will the boardwalk cost to rebuild? For some reason, still unknown, we’ve never gotten straight answers! Sometimes we were told $230 million, other times we heard $270 million. Now, a news report from Capital New York and confirmed in a memo from NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchel Silver to the Mayors office tells us FEMA will Reimburse The City of NY $480 million Dollars for our Rockaway boardwalk. I have a question for Commissioners Lewandowski and Kavanagh: HAVE YOU BEEN LYING TO OUR COMMUNITY ALL THIS TIME? Why has Parks NEVER given the Rockaway Communities any indication that Parks and the City of NY were requesting $480 million for the Rockaway boardwalk, while
only budgeting $270 million? What is the exact request for reimbursement from FEMA for the 1 mile of Parks play grounds, Skate park, hockey rink, raised flower beds, hundreds of park benches, handball courts and basketball courts along Shore Front Parkway, between beach 86th and beach 109th which were completely obliterated along with our boardwalk. I applaud Councilman Eric Ulrich’s call for NYC Controller Scott Stringer to come in and do a comprehensive audit of Parks handling of the rebuilding process of our devastated parks and boardwalk. Although, I’d go further and request that The Controller go as deep as possible and do a complete forensic audit. Looking at the bright side, with an extra $200 million maybe we can ask Vanna White for an “R” and get cushions for all the benches on the boardwalk.

Solo But Not Alone: Individuals Shine on Local Music Scene By Katie McFadden
Celtic Cross which has appeared at the local Irish Festival. Ensor also plays mandolin and banjo when he’s playing bluegrass tunes. He’s hoping to start a bluegrass band of his own by next summer and also hopes to create a community space where musicians can come together and participate in open mics. Singer/songwriter John Simonelli was a resident of Roxbury before moving to Belle Harbor and has been playing folk, rock and jazz music around the area for about 11 years. “He’s really a fantastic guitar play and has a great voice,“ Conrad Karl of Uma’s said. Although a solo artist, local bands sometimes ask him to join in because of his talent. “That’s what I love about Rockaway. They know me and know I’m about original stuff but I sit in with a lot of people. I enjoy that because I get to dabble into everybody’s style,” Simonelli said. Simonelli has performed all around the area from Connolly’s to Uma’s to Sayra’s and Low Tide Bar and is a board member of the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA). He released
his first recorded album in March 2014. The 10-track album, which is on iTunes, has a folk vibe that allows a listener to get lost in the music and feel the lyrics that come straight from the heart. Walker Hornung “has a long legacy of great rock music,” Karl says. Hornung describes himself as a singer/ songwriter who is “known more for his singing voice” than for playing a particular genre of music. He has been a member of several bands including Q-South, Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape, and his most recent project is a reggae/ soca/ rock band called The King’s Heartbeat. Hornung lived in Rockaway for 20 years and he, along with Jimmy Dowd and Steve Stathis, organize the annual Rockstock and Barrels Festival. Hornung handles the entertainment portion of the festival and brings in more than 15 performers each year. The King’s Heartbeat will perform at BB Kings Blues Club in Manhattan at 7 p.m. on November 18 as Hornung will be celebrating his 30th year of performing live. Opening for Hornung at the BB

Kings show is singer/songwriter Frank Persico. “He’s just awesome. He’s a very good musician and he has a lot of his own songs,” Chris Dalton said. Although living in Ozone Park, Persico says he’s no stranger to the beach and has been playing his folk, rock, alternative and R&B music in the area for more than seven years. “Rockaway is part of my upbringing,” Persico says. He plays his original music and cover songs at least once a month at local places like Daltons, Thai Rock, the Wharf, Jamesons and at RAA events. “People in Rockaway are a more open audience and they’re more laid back so they actually pay attention,” Persico says. Dalton says Persico draws in fans from all around the area and some women came all the way from Staten Island just to see him play recently. In 2011, Persico released an album called “The Reminder” and will soon release a live EP album. Brian Monaghan may be a Long Beach resident but he lived in Rockaway off and on and started playing in

Bands are aplenty at local bars and restaurants, but the peninsula also has its fair share of musicians who are recognized for their individual talent. Although living in Long Island now, Gerald Bair was a Rockaway resident for 30 years and developed a big fan base around the area with his storytelling singer/songwriter rock vibe. During his career, Bair was signed to a record label and shared stages with stars like Pat Benatar and Bo Diddley. Bair also performed at places like the Blackwater, where he used to bartend, the Harbor Light, The Irish Circle, Fitzgerald’s and the Paddy Wagon. Bair brings many hits that relate to residents such as his song “Driving Out Of Rockaway,” which he describes as a “love song for my old neighborhood” and songs written about September 11th and Hurricane Sandy. Profits from these songs go toward local charities and can be found on iTunes. Bair still plays around the area and will be at Healys on Thanksgiving Eve. Rockaway resident Walter Ensor started around the same time as Bair. “We started as teenagers and played a long time together,” Ensor said. Ensor says when he first started playing, “there were lots of places to play in Rockaway. Music was part of the culture. It wasn’t just about going out and getting drunk. It was more about ‘let’s go out and have a drink and listen to the music.’” Ensor often played at places like the Irish Circle, Jameson’s and the Wharf. He plays the guitar and Irish bouzouki for the Irish band,

“If you don’t like the weather now...wait a few minutes!” While reading all the coverage given the recent “Climate March” in N.Y.C. I could not help but remember that, when I was a youngster, the covers of magazines such as “Life”, “Newsweek” and “Time” used to carry photos of glaciers, hundreds of feet high, crushing their way across the city warning of an new impending ice age and referring to it as “Global Cooling”. Years later the pictures changed to depict flooded cities replete
with a tropical climate accompanied by dire warnings of “Global Warming”. A few years ago, when the powers that be couldn’t figure out if it was getting warmer or colder, the term “Global Warming” was discarded in favor of “Climate Change” with pictures of violent storms and drought ridden fields. Just recently, at last week’s U.N. Climate Conference I started hearing the term “Climate Disruption”
being used in place of “Climate Change.” Apparently, the “Climate Disruption” advocates have yet to decide upon an iconic picture with which to depict such “disruption.” Perhaps we would all be better off if we simply abided by the sage advice of Samuel Clemens (AKA Mark Twain) who said “If you don’t like the weather now...wait a few minutes.” Tommy and Barbara Corbett of West 11th Road just celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. In true Broad Channel family fashion, they spent their anniversary weekend attending four soccer games, a football game and a birthday party with their five children! This lady is a gem!” Of course this is the same Donna Kramer who remarked about her recent kayak trip out to Ruffle Bar on Jamaica Bay, by stating “Very successful kayak trip to Ruffle Bar...came back with a huge haul of old bottles and a mollusk in my bra. All in all a very good day for the mollusk!” Ever wonder where the term “flea market” comes from? The name originated with the legendary marchés aux puces, or flea markets, of Paris. At the biggest and most famous, St.-Ouen, just outside the city’s ring road at Porte de Clignancourt, an “unknown bargain hunter” back in the 1880’s looked down from nearby fortifications, observed junk dealers selling scrap metal, rags and old furniture, and exclaimed, “My word, but it’s a market of fleas!” And speaking of “flea markets”, for all you chachki (aka dust collector) lovers out there the Broad Channel VFW Post #260 will be holding a flea market this Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th, between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm. the area when he got his first Rockaway gig at the Harbor Light in 2002. Dalton says Monaghan “really knows how to get the party going” as the guitar and harmonica player plays a little bit of everything from oldies to current hits and even Irish music. Monaghan has also appeared at the Bungalow Bar and the Sugar Bowl and often plays private parties. “The people in the area really appreciate the live music scene and make a night out of it when there’s going to be live music,” Monaghan said. Michael Brunnock has also caught the attention of Dalton and plays original folk, rock and Irish music at Dalton’s twice a month. Brunnock, originally from Ireland, has been living in New York for the past 14 years and just moved into Rockaway in May. He has toured many parts of the world and in 2012 he won a David di Donatello award for Best Song for the film “This Must Be the Place” starring Sean Penn. Brunnock has five recorded albums, two of which were with a band in Ireland called The Little Palace. His latest album, The Orchard, was released in 2012. Drawing inspiration from the neighborhood, Brunnock plans to stay in Rockaway. “There’s a great sense of space here. I find it very inspiring to write here,” Brunnock said. “There is a sense of community and a real strong sense of Irishness. I feel very comfortable here.” Roxbury resident Mike Byrnes has been singing with different bands for 20 years and made his local debut at the Tap and Grill about eight years ago. Byrnes sings many 60s and 70s
hits and has performed everywhere from the Harbor Light to Caracas, the Wharf, Daltons and the Bayhouse. He recently joined forces with Rockaway resident Kyle Wade to form the duo, Stay Tuned. “Kyle does the strumming and I do the singing,” Bynes said. A favorite of Conrad Karl is a young singer/songwriter named Annika. At just 16 years old, the summer Breezy Point resident has already started to make a name for herself. This year, the young singer won for Queens in the WNYC Battle of the Boroughs and went on to the finals where she won the audience choice award. Annika has been writing her own music since she was eight years old and has written more than 70 alternative, indie and pop songs. While mainly playing guitar live, Annika also played the drums, bass and piano on her album called “Blind Desire” which she released in July. Annika has played at Uma’s, the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, the Bayhouse, the Breezy Point Surf Club and private parties around the area. “I love Breezy and Rockaway. There’s such a
strong community there and people are really supportive and listen,” she said. “Simon Chardiet is kind of a Rockaway legend,” Karl says. Playing music for 45 years and around Rockaway for the past 12, Chardiet is a member of two bands including Simon and the Bar Sinisters and The Rooftoppers. With the Bar Sinisters, Chardiet plays rockabilly, surf rhythm and blues and punk rock and he plays bebop and jazz with the Rooftoppers. Chardiet not only sings, but plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, spanish guitar and upright bass and has played with Bo Diddley and Rancid. Around town, Chardiet has played at Uma’s and Rippers. “The music scene is just really starting here and it’s cool that you get to play right on the block,” Chardiet said. “I’m not a rockstar or anything. I’m just another guy in the neighborhood but I just happen to entertain people.” Live music has become a big part of the bar and restaurant scene in recent years due to the spaces that are now open to it and the local artists who are
willing to share their talents with the community. “I think we have a lot of talent in Rockaway and it is very important to provide an outlet to let artists sing and play original music,” Karl said. “I played every Tuesday with other musicians in Montauk and a bunch of Rockaway people came in and that whole Rockaway thread ran through us. There’s something that runs through the people of Rockaway. It’s like hearing a good song. I feel that way every time I play here,” Ensor said.

This past Sunday, September 28th, was another beautiful day with sunny skies and great for spending time outside exercising. It was an amazing day to run the race for the organization, Music That Heals. This group brings the healing power of music to seriously ill children and adults. Quite an amazing group of people who help ease the pain and bring happiness to so many who are suffering. Kathy Lord, who is the co-founder of Music That Heals, lives here in Rockaway. Music That Heals makes people happy and second running races is a great form of exercise. I signed up with my husband and daughter thinking it would be a nice way to support Music That Heals and maybe I could start running again. Well, my time and discipline did not allow me to train properly. One run every 2 weeks is not enough. Here is how yoga helped me to finish the race and even receive a trophy! As I prepared to start the race, the organizer, Kathy Lord, introduced a beautiful opera singer who happens to be a

Running for Music that Heals
runner from a group called, “ Run to Have Fun.” Tears came to my eyes as she sang our National Anthem. She was quite an inspiration to start off the race. I even managed to see her during the race and she gave me incentive to try to catch her. I didn’t, but my eyes were always on her. We walk to the start and I set my intention, something I do every time I roll out my mat, Go Slow, Steady and Breathe!! Ok all is well. We begin by running downhill, I love this because it makes me feel so strong and it’s easy. Then my brain says, you grew up in this park – Prospect Park - you know there are hills. So my brain says slow up, pace yourself, there is no ego in this race. Ha! There is plenty of ego in racing. I begin to mentally map out the landmarks, ice skating rink is almost half way, , the zoo is the challenging hill, if I run hard downhill it will be a breeze and I will be on the home stretch. I am almost there and as I approach 4th Street my heart beats faster, this is the block my family grew up on and I have so many great memories. I can almost see my Mom and Dad cheering for me to go faster. I begin to pick up the pace. My Aunt Helen, who is almost 83, is at the end of the finish line waiting for me. I have to look good coming across that line, hence my ego is back! Overall, it was such an amazing feeling to cross the finish line but I attest my will power to my daily practice of yoga. I am going to train for my next race because I want to be at my best on race day. Be healthy, challenge yourself for a good cause. It’s inspiring. Curran’s Employee Follows American Dream By Bianca Fortis
It was a bittersweet farewell for the employees of Curran’s Superior Meats when one of their longtime employees, Urbano “Jack” Rodriguez, worked his last day last week. Rodriguez, 27, who worked at the butcher shop for 10 years, will start a new job as an engineer at a Manhattan construction firm. “Those guys, they’ve known me since I was in high school,” Rodriguez said. “They’re my friends, they were like family. They always took care of me and the customers are great.” Tom Murphy, a co-owner of the business, described his former employee as reliable, personable and as always having a smile on his face. “People like him, let me tell you, they’re not easy to find,” he said. “These are the kinds of people you can’t replace.” Rodriguez and his family came to the United States from a remote Mexican village when he was only 8 years old, he said. He said his father worked seven days a week to help put him and his brother through college. Rodriguez said he worked two jobs to help his parents – aside from Curran’s, he also worked at Brennan & Carr, a Brooklyn butcher shop. At City College, he pursued a major in engineering with a concentration in nuclear engineering and a minor in physics. It took 7 or 8 years to complete his studies until he graduated in May, he said. “It took awhile, but I did it,” he said. During that time he also managed to buy a

He said he didn’t want to waste time waiting to save up money until he started his career. “Being Latino, the odds are against you in a lot of ways, I find,” Murphy said. “But he fought right through that.” Murphy posted a message about Rodriguez and his family on Facebook, thanking him for his employee’s service. The post received nearly 300 “likes,” and 67 comments – all of which Rodriguez read, he said. “I loved working there for 10 years,” Rodriguez said about Curran’s. “If i didn’t have my career, I would stay there my whole life.”

Ulrich Calls for Boardwalk Audit City Council Member Eric Ulrich called upon New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer to conduct a comprehensive audit of all FEMA allocations to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Ulrich is urging the Comptroller to investigate how the city intends to spend $480 million in FEMA reimbursement funds it is expected to receive for the reconstruction of the Rockaway Boardwalk. According to local news reports, FEMA is expected to announce $480 million in federal reimbursement money to rebuild the Rockaway Boardwalk and related park amenities in Rockaway Beach – a number that far exceeds the $274 million Parks budgeted for the project. “It is imperative that every federal dollar the city receives for rebuilding communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy is spent wisely,” Ulrich said. “That is why I am asking Comptroller Stringer to use his powers as our city’s chief financial watchdog to bring about more accountability and transparency. The Parks Department must come clean and open the books regarding how much money the new Boardwalk will actually cost and where this money will come from.” Councilman Ulrich will also ask the Committee on Recovery and Resiliency and the Committee on Parks to hold a joint oversight hearing investigating the matter.

basic advice. When visiting your physician it is important that you understand all directions and treatments prescribed. Sometimes a physician will explain things using medical terms the patient does not understand. Ask questions and make sure you understand everything that you discussed. Occasionally the physician will write down directions to help with clarity. If, when you get home you are still unsure call the doctor back. These days we are bombarded by medical “information” in the media from TV ads and news pieces to internet websites. Some of this information is accurate but much of it is either incorrect or intentionally misleading, particularly in regard to TV ads that start with “If you have ever taken (a medication) you may be entitled to a monetary reward”. It is important that the patient does not inadvertently become the doctor. Medicines that you have taken regularly should not be suddenly stopped. This can have dire consequences. If you are uncomfortable taking a particular medication discuss it with your doctor first before you discontinue it. Lastly, never ever take someone else’s medication. We are all different and we have different medical conditions and take different medications. Medications can interact with each other, sometimes

Not surfing related but a recent discussion with one of the Parks Department managers of the boardwalk reconstruction said they are way ahead of schedule. Only problem is that the pieces for the actual boardwalk part won’t arrive ‘til January, otherwise they could be fitting them in place right now he told me. The other good part is they are working on the stretch from 97th to 106th which wasn’t to begin till the new year. Perhaps we might have more in place than what we expected. Hell, we deserve it! ***Parks Dept. logic….well…defies all logic! I keep trying to wrap my head around their way of doing things and I simply fail to understand. For starters they’re putting more of the alien trailer park stations in place downtown. Not sure why they’re continuing with these things when one lifeguard mentioned to me that they’re a massive FAIL. Why? One of the reasons is that the lifeguards don’t even have space in these trailers to store their equipment!

Yep, you read that right. The Parks Department needs to rent additional containers for each location to store all of the lifeguards equipment. That really makes sense. Oh, and here’s a good one my lifeguard friend told me. While they’re on duty and it starts raining, they must close their umbrellas. Huh? *** And here’s some additional good news. Tonight October 2nd, the Rockaway Beach Surfers Association in conjunction with the Rockaway Beach Civic Association will present our collective voice for the amendments to the NYC and NY State Health Codes relating to swimming and surfing, as well as requested amendments to the Parks’ rules on beach access and equipment definitions, such as boogie boards and swim fins. One of the newer proposals that the RBSA presented was the request for new surfing beach locations. I have written pretty extensively here in this space about the benefits surfing has brought to this community. I have also mentioned how dangerous it has become when so many surfers are forced into a finite area. When you look at the expanse of the entire peninsula and assess the small confines of where it is legal to surf, it’s pretty obvious the surfers require more space since the popularity of surfing in NYC has just blown through the roof. This picture with the area highlighted in red are the newly requested areas. The reason for these areas is that jetties capture the sand and taper the bathymetry (ocean floor) in a way that creates a beautiful peeling wave. Areas further downtown aren’t conducive to this effect and usually the waves closeout. Another point against a surf beach further downtown is that Silver Point, over at Atlantic Beach, shadows the swells from the SE and Easterly direction. ***On the “not bad news, not good news” front, great article by The Wave highlighting the scheming and possible lying by Parks on the FEMA funds allocated for the boardwalk reconstruction. I wonder how long the Parks Dept. really thought they could hide the $206 million and allocate it to other areas around the city. That money needs to stay here and build new jetties to fortify our peninsula! And keep the ferry!

Second Chances, Not Thirds This past Saturday night I ran into a guy that I had an issue with a few years back. After a late night of work I stopped at one of the delicious local bagel stores to pick up snacks, it happened to be a friend of mine that owned it. I was with a few friends when I noticed two guys walk into the store. They were young locals, one being a familiar face with a less than stellar track record for doing the right thing. They looked like they had a long night and were up to no good. After a minute of casing the joint, I saw them putting items in their pockets. I let them continue on their unhindered quest for glorious theft, patiently waiting like a stalking cheetah who was
about to pounce on his antelope prey. Though cheetahs are more precise in their craft, my patience quickly subsided after mere seconds, I went into full stealth attack mode. The unfamiliar antelope was dragged out of the store with stolen items simultaneously being retrieved. Being a less than agile cheetah, this young antelope was able to maneuver out of my aging paws after said items were collected. After empty threats were spewed, the message was clearly sent that this is a neighborhood where petty theft will not be tolerated without street justice being swiftly handed down, at least not on my watch. summed up before any interaction took place. “If you show me your friends, I will tell you who you are.” And the company this kid was keeping had him at the bottom of my list of model citizens. My assumptions were justified by his future actions. They were further validated by the arrest of the familiar face not ten minutes after this incident on a separate charge. Some time later, when I saw him in an establishment I work at, I cautiously approached the now familiar antelope seeking an answer. He quickly remembered my face, after a look of embarrassment, he immediately apologized and spoke like a gentlemen. He was in a different place then. A young teenager with no appreciation for the hard work it takes to hold down a job or run a business. He knew he was in the wrong, and

that that was a turning point in his life. A life lesson for both of us, he was looking for a second chance, I was looking to give him one. Had he been on the defensive, he and his entourage would have been asked to vacate the property, as we would have no reason to believe he didn’t have it in him to do it again. Beefchip and Team Cyclops have deep roots in this community, we believe in the maintenance of an orderly society and expect the same out of our neighbors. There are always going to be spoiled apples, but even some rotten fruit deserve a shot at redemption. We hope this antelope grazes our desert with the gracefulness it does the Sahara. If he does not, hopefully there will be a ferocious cheetah waiting to deliver our version of Social Darwinism.

The third week of Snowflake League softball has come and gone. The chance for an undefeated Cinderella season is no more as both the Black Sox and Ruffle Bar succumbed to losses this past week. With these losses, Ruffle Bar takes sole possession of first place due to run differential. Parking this past week up at the BCAC softball field was affected by the carnival that was taking place. Players were told to carpool and find spots on the Boulevard because the Funnel Cake vendors were taking up all the parking spots. Despite all the carnival rides and games, Snowflake League softball still had its games. Well almost all of its games. Mother Nature actually ruined the perfect weather season we had been having so far by giving all cars a free car wash all day long. The field was drenched and it was in everyone’s best interest to cancel the Thursday night doubleheader and re-schedule this matchup for Monday, September 29th. This slobberknocker between the Sons of Pitches and Old Head will begin directly after the originally scheduled doubleheader. Tell your lady friends not to wait up because it looks like you’ll be under the lights till’ the early morning. Old Head has four straight games to attempt to join the left column of the standings. Best of Luck!!! The games starting the week of September 22nd started with a matchup between the undefeated Black Sox and the 2-2 Rock Fam. This marathon double-dip saw a rollercoaster ride with both squads taking and losing leads and eventually resulting in a split.
The Black Sox undefeated season is over and Rock Fam moves to 3-3. The Wire, a team captained by Texas HoldEm legend Thomas O’Connor, named their team after the second best drama series ever to grace our television sets (Sopranos #1 always and forever). This squad defeated the Ruffle Bar on Tuesday night to end their perfect season but then got “mercied” in second game. Ruffle Bar catapults to first place. Wednesday night saw Marine Park carpool its talents to Broad Channel to take on Dennis Cook and the rest of his Crushas. Rumors are swirling that the Crushas had the first game won until their shortstop took his fourth or fifth helping of ‘Irish Coffee’. These errors late in the game allowed Marine Park to storm back to take that win. An hour later Marine Park fetched the broom they brought from their car parked on the boulevard, and swept the Crushas right out of the building by “mercy”. A Columbia University Study of the Recovery from Sandy The sTudy Researchers at the Center for Climate Systems Research at Columbia University are documenting the recovery from Sandy in the Rockaways and in other parts of NYC. They are conducting a survey of Rockaway residents to document the impacts of the storm and the assistance that people in the Rockaways got, for relief and for recovery. The objective is to understand which efforts were useful and effective and which were not so that the lessons can help to improve this recovery and speed up recovery from any future storms.

be done on weekends, beginning at the end of September and continuing through November. They can set up a time to do the survey at a time that’s convenient for you. The survey will take about 45 minutes and will offer a small compensation for your time. They will not record names or addresses in the data so all answers will be completely anonymous. In order to be credible, the study must choose households randomly – kind of like by rolling dice.
