Firefighter’s Life Celebrated At 13th Annual By Bianca Fortis The life of a former Rockaway lifeguard will be celebrated during a two-part event, the Steve Belson Memorial Swim and Music Festival. The Rockaway community will honor Steve Belson, a man whom his friend Sean Keller described as a free spirit. “He was a really, really caring and genuine man,” Keller said. “He was everybody’s friend. Any time you had a conversation with him it was like you were the most important person on the planet at that moment and it was a gift. He probably had 200 best friends.” Belson had been a lifeguard in the peninsula in the 1970s for about a decade, Keller said. Later he worked as a firefighter until he was

killed on Sept. 11, 2001. Keller said Belson’s friends joined together with the goal of memorializing and celebrating Belson’s life each year. “We wanted to do something positive,” Keller said. “And somehow we hit on this idea of having a swim.” Keller explained that Belson was an athletic guy. He was also a huge fan of music – the two had met at a Grateful Dead concert – so they combined his two passions and added the music festival component to the swim. Besides celebrating Belson, who was 51 when he died, the purpose of the event is to raise money for scholarships for Rockaway lifeguards enrolled in college. So far, 113 students have received awards

of $1,000 each – a total of $113,000, Keller said. Most of the funds come from small donations, proceeds from T-shirt sales and raffles. “That’s kind of the way we like it,” he said. “We don’t want big sponsorships.” Each year between 200 and 300 people attend each of the separate events. Keller noted that it’s remarkable that the number has remained consistent. “We haven’t lost interest. And the community hasn’t lost interest,” he said. “It’s not like year after year you see a

dwindling of people who come and celebrate Steve. We’re still there. And we’re still very strong.” The events will be held Saturday, Aug. 9. The swim begins at 10 a.m on Bell’s Beach (Beach 92nd Street). The music festival will be held at the Bungalow Bar, at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 92nd Street, at 7 p.m. The scholarship application form as well as a T-shirt order form are available at belsonmemorial. blogspot.com.

Gulf Ghost

Gas Station Closes; Prices High Elsewhere By Kevin Boyle On Thursday afternoon you could get a tank of gas and pick up a copy of the Rockaway Times in the fully stocked mini-mart in the Gulf gas station on Beach 115th Street and Beach Channel Drive. The next morning was another story. The store was boarded up, the gas tanks removed or boarded up, too. Just like that. Overnight. Closed. Calls to Gulf Headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts revealed nothing. A Gulf spokesperson said The Rockaway Times’ request for information had been “given to people who deal with these things.” And we never heard back. Meanwhile, four nearby gas stations remain open, though Mobil on Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive was out of gas on Tuesday. The shortage likely saved Rockaway motorists some money. The station has the highest gas prices on the peninsula. A regular tank of gas this week was fetching $4.11 for a cash purchase. Using a credit card cost more: $4.21 per gallon. Just a few blocks east, BP was charging considerably less, $3.79 cash or credit. Channel

Shell on Beach 59th was the next best buy, getting $3.84 with no extra charge for credit. Wave gas on Beach 108th costs $3.89 for regular gas but tacks on 16 cents per gallon for using a credit card, bringing the total to $4.05. Shell on Beach 116th was getting $3.99 per gallon, $4.09 with a credit card. Gas prices across the nation have fallen in recent weeks. Not so much in Rockaway. The average price in Rockaway is nearly 40 cents higher than national averages. A number of factors, taxes and distance from distilleries, for example, influence prices.

CB14 Committee Miffed Over Latest Boardwalk Designs By Bianca Fortis Members of Community Board 14 expressed their displeasure – again – at the most recent designs for the new Rockaway Beach Boardwalk. The New York City Economic Development Corporation and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation presented the current plans for the Rockaway Beach boardwalk to the Parks and Public Safety Committee of Community Board 14 Monday night at the Knights of Columbus hall. EDC and Parks representatives said they wanted to hold the meeting in order to discuss the designs – which had already been present-

ed in June – and get feedback from the community. However committee members were miffed because the board had already voted down those same plans two months ago. The biggest problems for committee members were some of the proposed boardwalk finishes: specifically, chaise lounges and “tanning tables.” According to Emil Martone, an EDC representative, those elements were not in the original proposed design. However, when the designs were presented to the city’s Public Design Commission, a board of 11 individuals appointed by the mayor, the board found the designs unsatisfactory.

While there is seating along the entire boardwalk, and the PDC asked that the seating near the main entrances be differentiated in some way – hence the chaise lounges. The tanning tables, which are essentially sloped flat surfaces, are designed to utilize some of the space between the boardwalk and the ramps leading up to the boardwalk. The Parks Department selected those elements from several designs that the EDC had developed in response to the PDC, Martone said. The exact number of how many chaise lounges or tanning tables would be installed was not available.

Committee members were vocally outspoken against the designs, arguing that the add-ons could welcome vandalism. They said ideas such as flowers, a water garden for children or shaded seating would better suit the needs of the community. Committee member John Cori said the lounges or tanning tables could act as projectiles should another storm come. “Did you ever consider what we wanted?” he asked the city representatives. “We sat for almost a year telling you what we wanted and you gave us nothing that we asked for.”

The Price Ain’t Right What can I say? Sticker shock always inspires a column. There were many a scam artist and price gouger in the wake of Sandy. It was just a few months after the storm when I went for a bite and a beer. Turned out, the beer was the bite. This local place, though not known as a watering hole, had the audacity to charge 6 bucks for a lousy bottle of Bud. I wanted to know if Anheuser or Busch themselves brewed this bottle. Somebody wants to charge that for some artisan beer with hops

and barley grown on somebody’s roof, ok, I get it. But a bottle of Bud? My latest case of sticker shock happened off the peninsula. A 10-ounce draft beer at Peter Lugers? $7.65. And now I’m thinking, what would Beef Chip and Team Cyclops do? They’re the bar restaurant experts who write for this paper. What’s a customer supposed to do about a tip, if the price is a clear rip off? I left the change on the bar so my 10-ounce draft beer cost me $10. You do better at Yankee games.

Most times I don’t pay attention to prices. (If I did, The Rockaway Times might cost something). I don’t use coupons. I couldn’t run for office because I don’t know what a quart of milk costs. But I do have an obligation to report highway robbery. Though speaking of highways – I hope that doesn’t trigger another letter to the editor from traffic-obsessed Rick Horan. He’s becoming another Larry Penner – which is an inside joke to anyone who reads letters in Queens’ newspapers. Where was I? Peter Lugers, Peter Schmugers. $7.65 for an Amstel Light. Sheesh. That’ll teach me to leave the peninsula. Boyleing Over: Suggestions come in from time to time about what to add to The RTimes. Some people would like to see crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and horoscopes. Of course, some people already feel like reading Boyleing Points is enough of a crossword puzzle. What’s a six letter word for not funny? Horoscopes take up too much space but some famous Leos – Mick Jagger, Madonna, Fred Marino, and Jerry Rea – have me wondering about astrology. I met a mystic – I knew he was a mystic because it said so on his t-shirt -- under the Freeway who said the stars for Leos this month

Page 5 were especially noteworthy because they formed some kind of triangle over the peninsula. He handed me a card. The Leo Horoscope: Increased energy and a renewed feeling of confidence is with you now, so take advantage. Mars and Jupiter and the Dragon Boat are aligned for you to be the inspiration for others. A straight-forward approach is best now. You are at the height of your solar powers with or without Walter Meyer. The sun is in your house and you radiate it towards others. Be generous, offer sunblock to others. People will offer you a cold drink. Accept it. I looked up and the mystic was gone. I wanted to ask if people believed this stuff, if it was worth putting in the paper in The Rockaway Times. All I know, is I saw some Leos later that day and they were shining. *** You can let me know if you want the Virgo horoscope next month. Or should I just work Soduku into this column. *** Hello Mary Teller, Maureen Hagner, Annie Graves and Mrs. Raphael!

Resilience Center Awarded $3.6 million The Science and Resilience Institute (SRI) at Jamaica Bay, a research consortium led by The City University of New York, has been awarded $3.6 million from the Department of the Interior’s Hurricane Sandy Mitigation Funding to support research projects that will advance knowledge of resilience in urban coastal ecosystems. The Bay contains more than 10,000 acres of city and federal parkland. The funding provided by DOI will enable the SRI to embark on ten research projects covering an array of significant topics such

Coastal Protection $$ for Breezy Point As part of the federal government’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, plans are now underway to establish a double dune barrier system, along with other bayside flood and erosion protection measures in Breezy Point. The federal government has awarded $1.2 million to support technical and feasibility analyses and permitting for the project, with the potential for more than $56 million in design, engineering and construction funds to follow. According to officials, the proposed dune system, which would continue the existing dune line located on the Atlantic side of the

as water quality within Jamaica Bay and the health and resilience of its salt marshes, the monitoring and evaluation of current ecosystem restoration efforts and an assessment of barriers to future projects. The research funding will also allow SRI to help evaluate community generated resilience strategies, to catalog the environmental history of Jamaica Bay and to start developing process studies and the groundwork for long-term research. The funded project work will begin immediately and continue through late 2016.

Cooperative’s property, will provide sustainable, natural flood and erosion protection utilizing the area’s natural features. The plan is comprised of an ocean side double dune system and complementary set of bayside flood and erosion protections that are designed to safeguard the community from future storm events. The dune will be designed to withstand the forces associated with a 100 year flood height as indicated on FEMA’s latest maps and the projected risk of sea level rise (2.58 feet) at that location over the life of the project. It will provide long-term, sustainable protection without the need for frequent maintenance. The estimated cost of the double dune system is $20.6 million. Many of the projects adopted by Breezy Point’s NY Rising Community Reconstruction Committee will work together with the proposed comprehensive coastal protection system to further protect this community. These measures will be complemented, on the bayside in Breezy Point and Roxbury, by the construction of bay walls and groins which are proven to combat flood and erosion respectively. The estimated cost of bayside protection is $37.6 million. As part of the HMGP Program, FEMA funds provide 75 percent reimbursement of eligible costs, up to the amount of the award. To offset the financial burden of Breezy Point, New York City has committed its disaster recovery resources for the remaining 25 percent.

More On Speed Camera

Dear Editor: First and foremost, how are we to know if the speed cameras are operational? I doubt they are accurately calibrated. Secondly, why the $50 summons? Why not start at $1 and double it each time, until it reaches a determined level, say $32. Even at the lowest levels, motorists would be vigilant to avoid getting any further summonses and that would be the effect that the city supposedly wants. Right? Maybe it isn’t about safety at all! Maybe it is only about generating revenue. There are better ways to alert motorists to pedestrians in an area than a clandestine camera. These have a zero effect on most motorists. Case in point: We have all seen traffic slow to a crawl when a Highway Officer is sitting on the side of the road! The speed cameras would have the same effect if they were conspicuous. Alas, revenue would plummet however and the city does not want that. Gerard Cunningham

Be Heard On Climate

Dear Editor: I am writing to urge Rockaway and Broad Channel residents to take part in the Climate March in Manhattan on Sunday, September 21, 2014. World leaders will be attending a conference on climate change at the United Nations; the march will make it clear to them how strongly ordinary people feel about this issue. Organizers hope that it will become the biggest climate change march to date. Those of us in the Rockaways and Broad Channel have a first-hand understanding of the threat posed by climate change. Since Sandy we have been diligent in working to defend ourselves against future storms and flooding, but it is also crucial to go on the offensive to stop climate change. I hope both individuals and local groups will attend the march and make it clear how important this issue is to us all. The whole world will be watching to see what steps our leaders take on this issue. Let’s make sure to be there and to have our voices heard! Jocelyn Smith

Beware of Rolling Thieves

Dear Editor: A young woman with shoulderlength brown hair glided to a stop on her skateboard next to my car on the northwest corner of Beach 99th Street and the Dirty Boulevard as I was preparing to drop off two big bags of dirty linen at the laundromat across the street. A tall young man with a brown ponytail, also on a skateboard, joined her. Despite feeling some suspicion, I did not roll up my windows or lock the car doors. I had my shoulder bag with me. When I got back to the car, minutes later, the couple was gone and so was my wallet. It must have slid out onto the car seat, ripe for nabbing. That night (July 27th) someone used my American Express card at CVS, and the next day my bank card was used fraudulently at Key Food and Stop & Shop. Did you know about this scam? From now on I will trust my instincts and lock my car. I hope the perpetrators develop kidney stones the size of hockey pucks. Mary Norris

About That Waldbaums Stop Sign

Dear Editor: (Regarding Rock Horan’s letter about the stop sign in Waldbaum’s parking lot) Rick, why are you blaming the manager of Waldbaum’s for the installation of the two stop signs? The Great A & P Corporation obviously thought it was a good idea for safety reasons or those stop signs would have never been installed. I also explained to you the reasons why I asked to have them installed, which I see you do not agree with. I also said to you that many vehicles exiting the Waldbaum’s parking lot are exiting in excessive speeds just in order to beat the changing traffic light at the Western end of the parking lot which is a very dangerous move. I brought this topic up at my last 100th Precinct Community Council. After explaining the reason for the two stop signs I said to all the members, it only takes a couple of seconds to stop look and then continue, followed by it’s better to be safe than sorry. There were no questions at all thrown back at me

at this meeting on the installation of the stop signs especially after I explained the reasons on why they should be installed. Another thing, so what if the light changes and you have to wait at the stop sign for another green signal, again it’s better to be safe than sorry. You speak about rear end accidents, if you can have a rear end accident while exiting the parking lot you must be going a little faster than you should be or you’re just not paying attention to your driving. You stated

The Rockaway Times the stop sign on the western end of the parking lot will cause confusion; there should be no confusion, the sign says stop, so stop. Oh yes, the pedestrians should also take some responsibility but as we know some drivers do not give the pedestrians the right of way. I know both you and I want to have safer streets, we just have different opinions on how to achieve that. As I said to you, we can agree to disagree. Danny Ruscillo Jr.

The High Tide A little of this and that Can you do us a favor? The Rockaway Times is going like hot cakes. If you can’t find the Rockaway Times in any of the 60 + locations we make drops – ask the shop owner to give us a call – we’ll either refill or add the place to our drop list. THANKS. ***** So the boardwalk will have the word “Rockaway” spelled out in large enough letters that it will be seen from the sky. Trouble is the “R” is part of a section of the boardwalk to be built later. So people will see “ockaway” from the sky for months. Locals are taking bets that the R will never be added and it will remain the Ockaway boardwalk. They’re worried the Mayor won’t put the R in the budget. ***** Anthony Weiner seems to be slowly emerging from solitude. Rockaway has always been kind to him so it’s probably a good place for him to start. ***** We asked an EDC spokesperson

about the ferry RFP. We want to know if the bids can be made public. That was July 23rd. Apparently, the spokesperson doesn’t speak, at least not to us, on this topic. ***** As part of the federal government’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Breezy Point will get a double dune barrier system on the ocean side and erosion protection on the bayside. Jetties are expected to be erected and will be considered as existing factors as the Army Corps completes its reformulation study. ***** If you need to contact PSEG, the company that took over from LIPA, make sure you call PSEG Long Island. The website PSEG directs you to a New Jersey number. ***** McRevenge. At least one neighbor near McDonald’s on Beach 92nd Street has had it with the fast food employees who allegedly toss litter wherever they feel like it. We hear the irate neighbor picked up

the trash and walked into the store and placed it on the counter. ***** Rockaway Brewing Company, which actually brews in Long Island City, was hoping to raise enough money to start canning their popular beer. Just when it seemed like they might fall short on their Kickstarter campaign, they eked past their goal of $30,000 with just minutes to spare. ***** The Allied Rockaway Foundation for Animal Recreation and Fitness, ARF-ARF, which oversees the very popular dog run at Beach 83rd street and the Freeway announced that the run has new agility equipment and that new mosquito traps are working. ***** A real estate website announced that “a 101,000-square-foot residential development in Rockaway Park has hit the market. Avison Young is marketing the property at 115-05 Rockaway Beach Boulevard and 165-187 Beach 115th, which is zoned for residential with a retail component.” Interesting. But the same piece noted “the Ocean Grande on the corner of Beach 117th Street and the Boardwalk, where units go for more than $1 million.” More than a million? Try half that. ***** We hear Debbie, formerly of the

Irish Circle, had a little get together for her old regular customers in Brendan’s bar on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Maybe Daltons and Healy’s, Brendans, the Taco King aka PasaTiempo and Kerry Hills will make this stretch of the Boulevard a destination. There’s another good rumor we’re hearing but it’s a tad early to report. Stay tuned. ***** In last week’s Back In The Day photo, we printed a picture of a girls’ basketball team from 1940. Little did we know that Alice McLaughlin was one of the girls. Just about a year later she married Charlie Rayder and together they produced 12 Rayder kids and a legendary Belle Harbor family. This week’s picture has no names but maybe you’ll recognize someone and let us know. ***** To raise awareness (and money) for ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease there is something called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. People film themselves dousing themselves or plunging into cold water. A lot of them can be found on Youtube. Memorable ones worth finding include Sean Tubridy and Phil Goldfeder. Between the groins By John Cori

Hard To Believe It’s hard to believe the Rockaway beach Boardwalk is still not rebuilt almost two years since its destruction. What’s even harder to believe is that The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is now attempting to amend the final design. On Monday night, The EDC presented the final boardwalk design to the Community Board 14(CB14) Parks and Public safety committee, which represents our peninsula and Broad channel. For those who may not know, CB 14 is a collection of the peninsula’s residents. The majority of the members on the board are civic leaders recommended to the board by our two NYC Councilmen and appointed by the Queens Borough President. At Monday’s meeting of CB 14’s Parks and public safety meeting EDC continued its attempt to change its “final design.” Now I say

“continued” because at the June 4th Parks and Public safety meeting they did the exact same thing. The issue may seem trivial to some, but to members on the Committee it is a matter of principle and taste. According to EDC there is a need to incorporate chaise lounges and tanning tables onto our new boardwalk. Why these are needed was not very clear. EDC claims the decision to use chaise lounges and tanning tables instead of choosing from a 7-page list of community ideas and suggestions came from the New York City Design Commission. What is the Design Commission? According to its own website it is: composed of 11 members, who serve pro bono, and includes an architect, landscape architect, painter and sculptor as well as representatives of the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Muse-

um of Art and the New York Public Library. The Commission holds monthly public hearings in its offices on the third floor of City Hall, where it has resided since 1914. The Commission also acts as caretaker and curator of the City’s public art collection and maintains an extensive archive documenting the history of New York City’s public works. WHO THE HELL ARE THESE PEOPLE??? HOW and WHY does someone from the Brooklyn museum have the ability to tell us what we should have on our boardwalk here in Queens? There was one other, un-

planned, item on the agenda on Monday evening, it was called frustration! The frustration of the “public” and not being able to ask questions at a committee meeting of CB 14. Here is a little secret: Any member of the community can request to become a public member of any committee of CB 14 they wish. This way as “public member” of a particular committee you may ask all the questions you wish. Simply contact District Manager Jonathan Gaska at cbrock14@nyc. rr.com or call 718-471-7300 and request to be put on a committee of your choice. You’ll have questions I’m sure!

Walter Meyer: Arverne East Will Be Sun Driven

Page 13

By Bianca Fortis

A new environmentally sustainable development in Rockaway is one to two years away from being shovel-ready, according to one of the project’s designers. The development, Arverne East, will be New York City’s first “netzero” neighborhood. Each of the approximately 1,200 homes, apartments and the planned business district, would be powered by solar panels, so all power would be generated on-site, according to Walter Meyer, one of the founders of the design firm Local Office Landscape Architecture. Modeled after the Rockaway bungalows, the homes are designed to be large enough and affordable enough for working families. The development will feature plenty of parking as well as plugs for electric cars. Arverne East parking was modeled after the parking lot of the Whole Foods in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Meyer said. “You can get your energy from the sun today, rather than the sun from millions of years ago, which is toxic,” he said. Local Office was commissioned for the project by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and the developer, L+M

Development. Local Office has designed a similar project in East Hampton, 555 Montauk, a luxury housing development. Arverne East will apply the same technology to a working family situation. “Everyone should have access to this knowledge,” Meyer said. “Technology shouldn’t just be for rich people.” The development is not off the grid – but “grid-connected,” Meyer said. Additionally, the power in Arverne East will stay on even in the case of a blackout, for example. “That’s what resiliency means,”

Meyer said. “That even in the face of change, you can adapt and find some semblance of normalcy.” Developments like Arverne East are designed with a specific goal in mind: to eliminate the world’s dependency on fossil fuels and help halt climate change. New York should not have been hit by the trajectory of Hurricane Sandy, Meyer said. But a shift in the climate allowed for the storm to strike the city, despite it being “against the grain of what nature does.” Carbon-based fuels are finite as well as toxic, Meyer explained.

And while some energy providers have moved toward using natural gas, extracted through fracking, natural gas is really just methane, which is even more toxic than carbon dioxide, Meyer explained. Renewable energy – geothermal, solar and wind – are safe, reliable and infinite. “My hope is that very soon this becomes the standard, that everyone designs this way,” Meyer said. “That solves this problem in the short time, and then we focus on other things.”

Is Surfing the new Golf? As surfers we’ve often joked about this. From the hordes of adults just learning, to the level of entitlement these beginners feel they have, with complete disregard to the sports history and unspoken rules, one of which is to “respect the locals” and also “do not drop in”. There are working professionals getting together on weekends to surf and creating their own clubs, such as in Florida with the “Doctors, Lawyers, weekend Warriors”. Even C-level executives in California opt to have their “Board Meeting” not on the links but in the ocean with their actual boards. The only difference is that they don’t have to book their T-off for their four-ball and pay hefty green fees. But very unlike golf, where you can go to a practice range and keep swatting those balls till you get that stroke down, in surfing, never is a wave the same. Which makes

practicing ones maneuvers very difficult. There are two absolute things said about surfing, “it is the sport of Kings”, which the Hawaiian Kings contested each other for land rights, and secondly, “Surfing has the longest learning curve of any sport”. Even 11 time world champion Kelly Slater says he’s still learning. But all this is about to change! While some would think of waves as being infinite, well, they’re not. They arrive on one day, and in these parts, they can be gone within hours, sadly to say. As of now, surfboard shaper Greg Webber in Australia has sealed a deal to create the first ever wave pool in Australia, and we need one here! While we have wave pools in Florida and elsewhere in the US, the technology is primitive by comparison. There are currently three new

Webber Wave Pool types of wave pool technology developed, with one of them already launched and creating an international buzz, that being the WaveGarden. Kelly Slater has his pool technology where he states it can create a variable wave form that can be tailored for each individual. But this uses a technology to create a Soliton wave, much like a tidal bore, a single wave with smaller trailing waves. Webber’s pool uses a Kelvin wave that “retains its shape as it moves in the alongshore direction over time.” Webber uses a hull to drive the wave creation and it reacts to a trough, the same as in nature. On top of this wave maintaining it’s height and speed, Webber actually can change the shape of the wave as it moves. He also claims it can generate 500 waves an hour! Crazy technology! Webber will also be using RFID

wristbands, so the system can keep track of your performance and dial the wave to be more difficult as your surfing progresses. Imagine physically turning up to your local golf course and wishing you could be playing St Andrews in Scotland, or Pebble Beach in California. Well, this wave pool can perfectly mimic any famous surfing wave from around the world. So it has come to the point where these wave pools will not be unlike a golf course. You’ll have to book your time, pay your green fees (possibly $2 a wave), wait in line to T-off and enjoy your day in the elements. Even practice on an identical wave to get that maneuver down. But what will be the surfing pool equivalent to a “FORE!”? At any rate, here on the peninsula we have plenty of room to have one of these built, a NYC water park would be epic…and easy ROI.

“Where residents track tidal charts the way horseracing fans scour the daily racing form.” The community of Broad Channel is unique among the myriad of other neighborhoods that exist within New York City. Nestled within the 18,000 acre wetland estuary of Jamaica Bay and isolated from the mainland, life in our community is inextricably and deeply intertwined with our environment. Hurricanes; tropical storms; nor’easters; storm surge; coastal flooding; tidal street flooding; sea level rise; global cooling; global warming; climate change and ground subsidence are terms we are all intimately acquainted with. Reporter Lisa L. Colangelo of the N.Y. Daily News once described Broad Channel as a community “…where residents track tidal charts the way horseracing fans scour the daily racing form.” Speaking of tides, there will be a full moon this Sunday August 10th accompanied by some exceptionally high tides (tidal heights of 6.9 to 7.1 feet) during the period of Saturday, August 9th through Tuesday, August 12th. If you routinely park in an area that is prone to tidal flooding, make sure your car is parked somewhere high and dry so it doesn’t inadvertently become a killie trap during these spring tides. Hurricane season runs from June to November and this season has already spawned two storms (Arthur and Bertha) which have both, thankfully, tracked away from us well out into the Atlantic. That being said, now is not the time to get complacent. Keep in mind that historically the period of mid-August through midSeptember is the most active part of our annual hurricane season as weather conditions and warm water temps provide fertile grounds for increased storm development. On Saturday, August 16th, from 2-6 pm, the Broad Channel V.F.W. Prince-Wynn Post 260 will host yet another Summer of 2014 BBQ open to all. ($20 adult...$10 children...

kids 4 and under can sneak in for free!) If you have yet to attend one of these events, mark this date on your calendar and try to make it. By mid-August, the summer heat will have returned! Imagine sitting in the Post yard at an umbrella shaded table with your friends and neighbors looking out across Jamaica Bay at the Manhattan skyline with an ice cold draft beer or soft drink in one hand and a hamburger or hot dog with all the fixings in the other. It just doesn’t get any better than that and all proceeds go to benefit our veterans! Mardi Gras 2014 continues…. Stop by Ruffle Bar in Broad Channel Friday evening, August 8th at 9pm and with a nominal cover fee of $5, enjoy the live music from Mr. Big Deal! Did I mention that Ruffle Bar now serves frozen libations? Yes - I have mentioned for 3 weeks in a row so get over to Ruflfe Bar and check it out, you won’t be sorry. Did you know that the American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. The Society’s Jamaica Bay Chapter serves as the eyes and ears on the waters that surround our home here in the middle of Jamaica Bay. It is headed up by one of Broad Channel’s own, Don Riepe. Don and his group are presently engaged in an effort to restore the freshwater West Pond in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve which was breached by Super Storm Sandy. To find out more about this organization, to get involved or perhaps even join as a member, visit their website at www.littoralsociety.org. QUIGLEY INSURA Let Children Be QUIGLEY INSURANCE

After 31 years in the education field, I have some thoughts on the enterprise. My Pot Luck contributions will air them. First: Children ought to be themselves. Children possess powerful learning instincts which express themselves differently in different children. These natural instincts and individual differences are seen shortly after birth, especially with siblings. For a while, siblings will explore the same things in the same way, but in a matter of months they will start developing different objects of interest, different ways of discovery and different likes and dislikes. Parents and grandparents can attest. Yet, from kindergarten, the command to children is to ignore their natural instincts and individual differences for being all the same. The Animal School by Dr. O. G. Reavis, former Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Cincinnati, Ohio, voices the dilemma: “Once upon a time the animals

Kitchen Patrol Anthony Weiner Making Plans For Rockaway Restaurant By Kevin Boyle

Anthony Weiner is a name you don’t forget. And it’s now the name being associated with a fledgling non-profit called the Rockaway Restoration Kitchen. On Idealist.org the endeavor is described as “a social entrepreneurship that operates a healthy, sustainable restaurant in a hard luck community to provide training, on-the-job apprenticeship and placement in the culinary and food service sector for unemployed New Yorkers.” The goal is to operate a restaurant with “locally sourced food that satisfies the hunger of Rockaway residents, attracts visitors and serves

Say You Saw It In The Rockaway Times

up dignity and self-sufficiency by serving as a hands-on training ground to provide skills, real experience and job placement in the culinary industry.” In simplest terms, the website claims the goals are nutrition, education, and restoration. Weiner’s aim is to launch something that can help the disadvantaged in Rockaway. For now, it’s idea in need of a little more baking. Weiner is still looking for a home for this enterprise. Although Weiner has not made any public statements regarding the venture he has had talks with Ron Moelis of CEO of Arverne Views (formerly Ocean Village) and others regarding possible space. And the Rockaway Restoration Kitchen is doing more than seeking a home. It’s seeking an Executive Director. The lengthy job description can be found on Idealist.org, a website with job listings for non-profits. Weiner has made no public announcements and his name does not appear in the Rockaway Restoration Kitchen website but his site search and stated goals have been noted by a growing number of locals. Although Weiner famously fell from grace, more than once, he often found solace in the receptions he received in Rockaway. If a restoration is underway, it might suggest more than a kitchen.

Nicholas Marino, age 9, is a member of the traveling All Star team called the Forest Hill Bombers. He’s also grandson of The Rockaway Times salesman, Fred Marino. The Bombers took on the Ozone Park Athletics on Sunday, July 27. Starting pitcher Dawson Montess hurled shutout ball for 66 pitches until handing the ball over to Nicholas who contin-

ued the scoreless pitching. The Bombers rolled to a 10-0 win. Nicholas started his baseball in the Rockaway Little League at age 5 in the Tee-ball division. Grandfather Fred, who also coached his own son at a smilar age, bursts with pride knowing there have been three generationsof Marinos who’ve played and loved the game of baseball.

Summer Classic Roundup The Men’s Open division wrapped up its regular season last week and playoffs began with quarterfinals on Thursday. Quigley Insurance finished undefeated and earned the top seed. Slices and Ices, and Caiazzo Plumbing both finished 6-2. Richard Kenny Law, and Buckley’s and Kennedy’s square off against each other. Rock Park All-Stars, Bridge Café, and Jameson’s complete the playoff field. Semifinals are this Thursday night August 14 and the finals are August 21. Walsh Properties is 4-0, separating from a logjam of Girls Grammar Junior teams bunched around ..500. Likewise with the Boys Junior, Blue Bear Risk Management is 5-0. Rathbones

and 265 Entertainment share the top of Boys Grammar Middle at 4-1 with Rockaway Little League, Pubco Tax, and Greene Machine at 3-2. Walsh Management, Boarders Surf Shop, and Storage Place are all 3-1 in Boys Grammar Senior. Breen Electric is the last undefeated team in Boys High School at 4-0. IC/ IC follows at 3-1. The Girls High School division resumed after a short break with Animal Hospital of the Rockaways in the lead and Rockaway W.I.S.H. still tops Girls Grammar Senior. This is the last week of the regular season with playoffs beginning on Monday August 18. Championships are scheduled August 21 and 22. See you at the schoolyard.

The Fishing Report By Matt Whalen

Ahoy Rockaway ! Here’s what’s happening in the Rockaway area. Water Temp. 70*F (B-9th St.) It’s kind of cruel when mother nature gives us nice weekdays full of sun and summer and then gives us a rainy weekend. This has been the “norm” for the last few weekends but, there are still plenty of fish out there, and the fluke fishing continues to be great in Jamaica Bay. You may have to put up with a lot of short fluke (under 18”) coming up to the surface on your line (that you must throw back) but, the smaller ones often fall off of the line before they ever make it to the net, saving you the work of “catching and releasing”. The fishing action is good even though many fish are small but, if you keep fishing you’ll get a few keepers. I can’t think of a better summer meal, and it’s available right in our backyard for a short time only. Snappers (baby blue fish) are also showing up at piers and docks. These are easy to catch with either a small spoon lure, snapper popper, or spearing on a hook, with or without a “float’ (bobber). You can find these fish in back creeks and local docks everywhere (limit 10 fish per person). Bernie Matzen was drifting

Reynolds Channel on Sunday between B-9th Street and the Lido Golf Course on the incoming tide and had some good results while using “Gulp” lures, lots of undersized fluke but, some keepers in there too. Bern was also using a white 1/2 oz. Buck tail lures recently producing keeper fluke, and some cocktail blue fish in the 20” size while drifting near the Bridges. Some blue fish are around showing up then disappearing quickly near the bridges. Bernie said that the water on Sunday was “murky and weedy” because, of the storms earlier. Bernie has taught us that Gulp Lures work well because, soft baits like spearing or squid often get taken off the hook by the fish on the first strike. Gulp lures can be dropped back down after a fish strikes it, so it can strike it again (allowing you to set the hook) because, the artificial bait that’s attached to the hook is still there. These lures are available at your local tackle shop. Howard Beach: Captain Mike reports that the fluke fishing is phenomenal in Jamaica bay, with everyone limiting out on fish. On the last trip “Ed Monroe” caught the pool fish, a 9 pound 2 ounce fluke.

The Mustache Bash – Rules of the Road It’s that time of year. The time of year to short companies such as Gillette, Edge, and Bic. The time of year to get your bicycles in tip top shape. And the time of year to give back a little something, for what you have gotten out of being a product of the greatest town on Earth. Yes folks, it’s MUSTACHE SEASON. You’re all on notice. August 17th at 12 pm the Bash starts at Thai Rock, takes its usual long distance trip to Connolly’s for our first water break and cool refreshing AC. We will then storm the Concessions like the Allies took Normandy. Parks Department officials will do the likely “Who’s in charge?” routine, to which you will respond in any language other than English. There is no organizer of this. We are all friends on a bike ride. The route will continue on its usual path to the Irish Circle, memories will be shared, homage will be paid and a moment of silence followed by a harmonious

“God Bless America.” Though he is still alive, it’s said Dicko’s ghost appears through the windows with whispering chants of his name. We will see what happens. Shore Front Parkway’s weight limit will then be tested with a straight run to Mickey Carlton Way. Healy’s will welcome us with a warm hug, fat guy temperature Air Condition and ice cold brew. Brendan’s Bar will complete the journey where stories of yesteryear will be shared and possibly reenacted. Experience has shown us that anything more than this can result in serious injury. For all the fun this charitable day brings, this column will serve as ‘How To’ guide while navigating the treacherous conditions you may encounter. 1) Please bring your A game. This is not a day for amateurs, this is for professionals only. This is a charitable day where we give to local organizations that help our community. So leave your ego at

home with the “look how crazy I am” motif. Please be respectful to our fellow bashees, neighbors and their property. This is a man’s game, if you act up, as permanent Grand Marshal Jughead will sing you a lullaby. 2) Helmets are not required but as experience has taught us, they are encouraged. You will most likely be laughed at, but the mild ribbing may indeed save your life. 3) The event costs $100, do a favor for your ride captains, bring large bills. They do not want to carry your gross singles you took off the bar last night. Hit the ATM Jack!

4) This event is rooted with deep history; you will be amongst many Legends that your parents have told you stories about. Act accordingly, if you do not adhere to rule 1 and 4 you will promptly turn in your mustache and hog and asked to vacate the area. 5) This event is strictly 21 and over. No questions asked. With all that being said we would love to thank the wives out there, we know that you know what this day of camaraderie and male bonding brings. We do it because we love this town and its people. There is no place like it.

teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the tree top down. He also developed charley horses from over-exertion and then he got a ‘C’ in climbing and a ‘D’ in running. “The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class, he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there. “At the end of the year, an abnormal seal, who could swim exceedingly well, but also run, climb, and fly a little had the highest average. He was valedictorian. “The prairie dogs stayed out of

school and fought the tax levy because the administration would not add digging and burrowing to the curriculum. They apprenticed their child to a badger and later joined the groundhogs and gophers in starting a successful school.” Healthy growth -- mental and physical, emotional and intellectual--- requires schooling to fully allow for the individual differences among children and permit each to grow in his own way and in her own time according to their own natural learning instincts creating a personalized rather than a cohort driven approach to schooling. Be Well, Be Happy By Patricia Rorke

Never Been To A Spa? It is possible you have never been to a spa. You may think, why do people go to spas. Isn’t it just a waste of your hard earned money? Not at all! In today’s crazy world, people work long hours and then spend entire weekends working around the yard, cleaning the house, running kids back and forth to various events, and trying to find some down time for themselves. Although it’s considered a luxury type of self-pampering to some, many people have no trouble going to a day spa to unwind. I’ll never forget this one gentlemen who came into the spa so stressed out you could see it all over his face. After a one hour massage he walked out of the

treatment room like a new person. He smiled and said this is not a luxury, it’s a necessity in this day and age. He now comes on a regular basis while others will make it an occasional treat but regardless, the outcome is always the same – relaxation and wellness. Did you know that massage therapy is now being used alongside standard treatments for a variety of health issues? Massage has been a client favorite for reducing stress and battling muscle tension for quite some time but, more and more people are now utilizing massage therapy for an increasingly wide variety of health conditions. Sit back, relax and read on. Before I tell you more, you might be wondering “What exactly IS

massage?” I’m glad you asked! In simplest terms, massage therapy is the manipulation of the various muscles and connective tissues in a variety of ways. This manipulation aims to increase function, aid in the healing process and to soothe and relieve pain. Massage has been around for thousands of years. Massage boosts the immune system, increases circulatory function, aids in the release of toxins that are harmful to your body, reduces swelling and eliminates the pain associated with a variety of conditions. In addition to all of this, it reduces STRESS!! Now onto my favorite spa treatment, a FACIAL that gives results! If you want your skin to look its best you have to take care of it. A facial does for your skin what a month of exercise and good nutrition does for your body. Noticeably improve its look and feel through exfoliation, deep-cleaning of pores, stimulating and improving circulation and use of professional-strength products. Your esthetician can make a lot of progress towards improving your skin in a single session. Like a personal trainer, she has experience, techniques, products and equipment that cannot be replicated at home. So why would I get regular facials? While a month at the gym will achieve great results (as will a facial), if you stop exercising and

eating well, your body will start heading back to its previous condition. You’re still better off than you would have been without that month of conditioning, but if you keep up the program, you will continue to improve your appearance and your health. Likewise, regular facials (especially with an active home-care regimen) will help prevent breakouts, keep your surface cells newer and healthier and will ensure that your skin looks it’s very best. The View From Belle Harbor

BHPOA + Rockaway Ferry + Meeting = Successful Event! The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association’s July meeting held on July 31st at 4:35 p.m. on the cruise ship, aka the Rockaway Ferry, was a resounding success. The meeting was a very fluid event; the main topic was the need to secure the Rockaway Ferry on a permanent basis with an extended schedule that includes weekends. It was unanimous. Everyone on board agreed this was a goal our city fathers must adopt for the future expansion of transportation services for our great city. Our city is one that has never stood still and is continually redefining itself. The New York City’s Riviera, aka the beaches in Rockaway, have tremendous potential to become a great tourist attraction and contribute to the economic engine of our city. Expanding ferry service from Kennedy Airport to a ferry terminal/hub in the Rockaways and ultimately to Manhattan would substantially open up ferry ridership. The challenge, as a community, is how we get our city fathers to share this vision with us and develop a working relationship to making this a reality. The spectacular ride into the city was captivating for all those on board. The views of Jamaica Bay, the Marine Park Bridge, Coney Island, the Verrazano Bridge, the Brooklyn shorefront, the Statue of Liberty and downtown Manhattan skyline proved quite exhilarating for all those on board. The meet-

ing became for many a mini vacation on the cruise ship Rockaway. When we landed in lower Manhattan people took advantage of restaurant week/month and spread out to find restaurants for a meal. Others went shopping at the seaport or did a run to Century 21 in lower Manhattan. Some folks continued sightseeing by visiting the Raging Bull on Broadway and Wall Street. Summer is a time we all look forward to. After the last winter we have to recharge our batteries and take advantage of the nice weather. What better way than to take a cruise on the Rockaway Ferry to the greatest city in the world. Besides helping to increase the ridership on the ferry, the trip contributes to everyone’s well being. Checking out the smiles and windblown hair of those leaving the ferry at the end of the evening confirmed that fact that all had a good time! Our association is urging our members and all Rockaway residents to plan trips into the city using the Ferry. Families with young kids, with time on their hands, could plan a trip on the ferry to the city in the morning and, once in lower Manhattan, catch the ferry to Governor’s Island and see the spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan from the Island. If you arrive early on the Island you can get to use a rental bike free before 12 noon;

The ferry gives you the opportunity to stroll downtown.

Ferry good place to hold a meeting. after that you pay. Arriving on the island around 10:40AM gives you enough time to get a bike and see the whole island in 45 minutes. Another idea, once landing in lower Manhattan on the ferry, is walking the Brooklyn Bridge. On the Brooklyn side you can catch a ferry under the bridge that brings you back to Pier 11 in Manhattan. While in Brooklyn I recommend you walk the newly developed waterfront area running from the base of the Bridge to Atlantic Ave. And on Wednesday, you can catch a matinee on Broadway. What a great way to ride the ferry in to 34th Street in Manhattan. Go

with friends, get tickets for a show, catch lunch and return home on the afternoon/evening ferry. The ferry does allow bikes to come on board. How about taking your bike into the city and riding up the west side to Central Park? Pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery. A healthy way to get some exercise and enjoy the day. Finally, we are declaring every Thursday in August a dinner excursion night to Manhattan. Catch the 4:35PM ferry into the city, have dinner, do some site seeing and return on the 7:50PM ferry back. You will be glad you did!

Claws and Effect? Local Vets Against Declawing Cats By Jules Verdone Most veterinarians in the United States belong to one of two camps: They declaw cats or they don’t. Dr. Allan Simon, who cofounded the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways in 1977, sees the divide this way: “As more people get educated, the veterinarians who continue to do it are going to be on the wrong side...of the welfare of cats.” Simon and his colleague, Dr. Susan Whittred, recently became the New York State co-directors of The Paw Project, a nonprofit organization that opposes declawing and funds reparative surgery for domestic, wild, and exotic cats injured by the procedure. Whittred says most people don’t know what declawing entails. The most common procedure, onychectomy, involves removing not only the cat’s claws but also the bones from which the nails grow. As Whittred puts it, “If someone chopped off all [the ends of] your fingers and you had to walk on them, you might have some problems.” In addition to pain and the risk of infection, she describes potential behavioral consequences, including not using the litter box—often because it hurts a cat’s declawed paws—and biting. “Because they don’t have their claws, they can become more aggressive,” she explains. As a matter of practice and principle, doctors at the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways have rarely declawed cats. Now it’s policy: They won’t do the procedure. And although the American Veterinary Medical Association and some of its California affiliates opposed the 2009 bills to ban declawing—citing concern that cats who scratch might be abandoned or euthanized—the AVMA amended its policy in late July. The updated policy on declawing describes it as an “amputation” and says it “should remain an option of last resort for veterinarians and pet owners.”

Dr. Ted Cohn, the new president of the AVMA, calls the revision “an important modernization. It heightens the awareness of the procedure in the minds, I hope, of our members, as well as the public.” He believes more people now know that declawing is major surgery; he says that at his practice in Denver, “Ten to 15 years ago, 75 to 80 percent of cats we would spay or neuter we also declawed.” Cohn says that number is down to one or two procedures a month. Dr. Jennifer Conrad, the Southern California veterinarian who founded The Paw Project, calls the new AVMA policy “wishy-washy and frustrating.” She says vets won’t stop declawing cats unless the AVMA deems the procedure “substandard medical care and practice.” She takes issue with parts of the policy, particularly this sentence: “There is no scientific evidence that declawing leads to behavioral abnormalities.” Conrad points to research cited on her website, pawproject.org— including one study of 57 cats published in 2001 in the AVMA’s journal—that reports increased behavioral problems among declawed cats. Cohn isn’t familiar with the study but says more research is needed and added it would be difficult to prove cause and effect between declawing and a behavioral problem: “I know of [no study] that has been done to show that on a reproducible, ongoing basis.” At the heart of the disagreement is this question: Does declawing allow people to keep pets whose scratching they cannot tolerate or does it result in behavior that leads to more abandoned cats? The answer is almost certainly “some of each.” As Cohn acknowledges, “It is very complicated.” Whittred sees declawing and the abandonment of declawed cats as a disturbing cycle. In addition to her work in Rockaway, she is the director of veterinary medicine at the Pa-

Whenever she sees an online posting of a declawed cat at Animal Care & Control of NYC, she makes a copy. “I have reams of declawed cats who have lost their homes, probably because of inappropriate urinating or biting,” she says. “Maybe veterinarians think people know what [declawing] is, and it’s been this big cycle, which needs to stop.”

Simon says he and Whittred focus on educating clients and other vets. The Paw Project’s founder praises Simon’s efforts: “Here’s a veterinarian who has been in the practice for a long time,” Conrad says. “He’s a practice owner who says declawing is not necessary for revenue. He’s proud to be on the forefront of changing this. We’re not TV repairmen. We’re taking responsibility and being accountable— and we advocate for the animal.”
