A group of independent record store owners came up with an idea for a day to honor record stores with an event where independent record stores from across the nation would participate. The participating record stores would hold special events such as meet and greets, live music, releasing unique products made exclusively for the day, and other happenings.
On April 19, 2008, the first Record Store Day took place. Today, Record Store Day has grown from a national celebration to a worldwide event. There are participating independent record stores on every continent except Antarctica, and cities including New York, Los Angeles, Boise, and Las Vegas have even declared the day an official holiday.
Each year, a Record Store Day Ambassador is named to help bring awareness to the event. This year’s Record Store Day Ambassador is Taylor Swift, a title previously held by artists and bands including Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Grohl, Metallica, St. Vincent, Pearl Jam, and Brandi Carlile. Visit RecordStoreDay.com to view a list of participating record stores and find the nearest independent record store to you.
