5 Best Short Hikes Around Kathmandu Valley

If you don’t have time and energy to do an adventurous trek, short hiking tour of 1-2 days around Kathmandu valley is a best option. The sub-alpine forests and quiet countryside make for a great short break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Most of the hikes mentioned here are suitable for children and older people and can be done in a single day. 1) Phulchowki Hike (Godawari - Godawari)


Phulchwoki is situated to the south of the Kathmandu valley and it is a highest hill near Kathmandu. It is 14 km far way in south of Kathmandu and you will drive to Godawari to start your hike. En route you will be able to see sub-tropical thick forests filled with oak trees and rhododendron. You will also see the species of orchids, birds, and butterflies. From viewpoint you get a awe inspiring view of Kathmandu valley. On clear days you can get the beautiful view of Annapurna range to Gaurishanker in the east. 2) Champadevi Hike

Champadevi is situated in Makwanpur district in the southeastern corner of the Kathmandu valley. The routes to reach the top of Champadevi summit takes you along the Dollu valley through pine forests and along the grassy ridge top. The hike starts from Hattiban Resort. The trail of this hike is well paved and easy to follow. The total times it take to do this hike is around three hours, there and back. Parking is available at the Hattiban resort. The second and less used route to reach Champadevi begins from the Dakshinkali Temple road. This routes takes you walk along dirt roads through fields until you reach the forest where the trail climbs steeply through the forest to reach the ridge above Hattiban resort. This route takes about 4 to 6 hours to complete the hike.


3) Hikes around Nagarkot Nagarkot is 32 km far away from east of Kathmandu and can be visited for a day. But to appreciate the beauty of sunrise and sunset, it is a good idea to stay overnight. To start a hike you will drive approx. one hour to Sankhuh, an ancient Newari town on the northeast corner of Kathmandu valley. The routes take you through the pine forests and it takes approx. four hours to complete this hike. On reaching Nagarkot you can look around the beautiful village and watch the sunset spectacularly over the Himalayas. You can stay overnight at Nagrkot and early morning you will be rewarded with beautiful sunrise view to the north east of Nagarkot over the Himalayas including Mt. Everest. 4) Chisapani Hike

Chisapani is situated at the altitude of 2,215m above the sea level. It is a small settlement of Brahmin, Gurung, and Sherpa people. Hiking around Chisapani offers fantastic views of Himalayas. The hike starts from Sundarijal, passes the main water source for Kathmandu and goes on through Shivapuri National Park until you reach Chisapani village. 5) Chisapani to Nagarkot Combined Trek


The best way to expand your trek to Chisapani is to keep on going the next day to Nagarkot. Trek Sundarijal to Chisapani as mentioned above, you can overnight stay at Chisapani and next morning you can hike approximately 7 hours through mostly dense forest to Nagarkot. In Nagarkot you can overnight stay again or drive directly back to Kathmandu. Next alternative way to make your hike longer is better to keep trekking from Nagarkot to Changunarayan. The trail from Nagarkot to Changunarayan descends through terraced fields, through a Tamang village. It takes about 4 hours to reach the temple at Changunarayan from Nagarkot. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it has been restored after being damaged in the 2015 earthquakes. There is also a very interesting museum at the temple. From Changunarayan you can walk or drive to Bhaktapur which is just 8 km far from the temple. Explore Bhaktapur, a medieval town with its rich cultural history.
