Homegoings Marilyn Louise Callender Culberson Mossop Sunrise: July 11, 1922 Sunset: December 10, 2016 2 Corinthians 5:8 KJV “... to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” Marilyn Louise Callender Culberson Mossop transitioned from Hillside Manor Nursing Home Saturday December 10, 2016 at 11 p.m. She was 94 years young. Marilyn was born July 11, 1922 in Harlem, New York and raised in Corona, Queens. Marilyn attended NYC public schools and is an alumna of Hunter College, City University of New York. Marilyn was a New York City civil servant serving as a microbiologist for various hospitals in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation system and then transferring to the New York City Board of Education where she served as a Biology Lab Specialist for various high schools including Springfield Gardens High School where she retired in 1975. and in the community serving in many roles including Sunday School Superintendent and Summer Day Camp Director for Grace Episcopal Church, Jamaica, New York, President of the Flushing Suburban Civic Association and Community Planning Board #8 member and Area chairperson. Marilyn enjoyed vacationing annually in Barbados, the birthplace of her father, and obWaverly Vinson was born in Harlem, New York on July 3,1938 to the late Stanley Vinson, Sr. and Ethel Lee Vinson. Waverly received her early education in the New York City Public School system where she earned her diploma at Julia Richman High School. After high school Waverly worked for the United States Postal Service and later transferred to the New York City Transportation Authority. Waverly accepted Christ at an early age and continued on with her faith throughout her life. Waverly brought joy to everyone she met with her loving spirit. Waverly had a passion for shopping from which she received the nickname “Ms. Macy’s” for being a wellknown, longtime customer at Macy’s clothing store. Waverly enjoyed participating in yoga at the Rochdale Village Community Center, had the passion and divine skills for dancing and was a member of the senior dance group “The Rockaway Review.”

Waverly was a vibrant, kind and caring person. She helped many people in their times of need. She was outgoing, loving, opinionated and strong-willed. She loved her family, son Melvin, daughter, Norlyn and took great pride in talking about her grandchildren.

Marilyn Mossop was a resident of Rochdale Village Building #14, Circle 4 since 2011 before entering Flushing House Retirement Home in September 2015 and finally Hillside Manor Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility after a hip fracture in the Spring of 2016. Marilyn Mossop is survived by her three children, Verne Culberson, Ivan D. Mossop, Jr. (Rochdale Village resident) and Mitchell C. Mossop; two grandchildren Clarissa K. Mossop and Malcolm J. Mossop and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. As per her request, her remains have been cremated and interred in the grave of her deceased WWII Army veteran husband, Ivan D Mossop Sr. at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale. A memorial is planned for a date to be determined in the Spring/Summer of 2017. Lovingly submitted by the family.
On Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the age of 78, Waverly was welcomed into the arms of our Lord and Savior. She is preceded in death by her father, Stanley Vinson, Sr. and mother Ethel Lee Vinson. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Melvin (Cheryl) Vinson, daughter Norlyn (Gregory) Washington, brother, Stanley Vinson, [r., sister, Lavern Wilkerson, uncle Walker Norwood, 8 grandchildren, Shawn, Lateaka, [amel, Tamara, Starr, Crystal, Melanie and April. One great-grandchild, Cleveland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. We truly loved and will deeply miss her presence. We have been blessed with fond memories and will cherish them forever. However, God in his infinite wisdom has a greater plan and we will submit to his will knowing we will see her again.
