From Cutting Boards and Bookends… to Bedrooms and Boardrooms!

A 40 Year, Arts Festival Success Story: In 1972, 13 year old Doug Roeshot decided to sell his handmade wooden cutting boards, bookends and candleholders, at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. His products were so successful, the entire family soon embarked on a journey into the woodworking business, and Spectra Wood became a fulltime operation, crafting quality commercial and residential furnishings for over 40 years! Proud to be “American Made”, Spectra Wood products are still manufactured in State College, PA, through innovative and cutting-edge equipment and employee training, successfully competing against the tide of mass-produced imports. Come visit us at our showroom, and see how far we’ve come, thanks to you, our customers, dedication to the art of woodworking, and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts!

In Memorium

The Festival lost two important friends this year, Wally Lloyd and Sharon McCarthy.

Wallis Lloyd

Wallis Lloyd, one of the founders of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, died in January 2012. He was a chemical engineer who moved with his wife, Pat, in 1956 to State College, where he taught at Penn State and was involved in the Atoms for Peace Program. In 1963, he joined Cannon Instrument Company, eventually becoming its vice president. He also was involved in many community activities, such as serving as the president of the State College Chamber of Commerce. It was in that capacity that he contacted the dean of Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture to begin the town/gown venture that is the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts; Pennsylvania Gov. Raymond Shafer opened the CPFA on July 22, 1967. In 1992, Wallis Lloyd received the Borough Legacy Award for outstanding contributions to the quality of community life.

Sharon McCarthy

Sharon McCarthy, a long-time volunteer and board member of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, died in February 2012 after a long bout with ovarian cancer. A native of Lancaster County, she led a rich and eventful life that took her to live on the west coast and then back to the east coast before returning to her beloved Pennsylvania. She was a Democratic Party activist, a successful merchant, an artist, and a lifelong community volunteer. Shortly after Sharon and her husband, John, moved to State College in the late 1990s, she became involved with the Arts Festival. She chaired the Images Exhibition Committee and served on the Festival’s Board of Directors. Sharon was instrumental in the success of the Festival’s Silent Auction, and she and John have sponsored an Award of Merit in the Sidewalk Sale & Exhibition. We salute Wally's and Sharon’s hard work and generous spirits. In more ways than we can count, each of them made our community a better place to live.

Featured Authors

Sara Shepard: Don’t miss Sara Shepard, whose hugely popular book series Pretty Little Liars is the basis for the current hit TV show. The Lying Game, her second thriller series, is also now a TV show, and her latest release, the adult novel Everything We Ever Wanted, is a riveting mystery based on a college hazing scandal. Sara Shepherd Shepard grew up in Main Line Philadelphia, the setting for many of her books, and she also lived in State College for a spell as a youngster. Her first book, Quizzles, won an honorable mention in Schlow’s children’s bookwriting contest! Tawni O’Dell: National bestselling author and State College resident Tawni O’Dell’s books have been published in more than 50 countries. Her first book, Back Roads, was an Oprah’s Book Club selection and is now in development as a film starring Jennifer Garner. Tawni O’Dell 16 - 2012 Arts Festival Program

O’Dell writes with striking authenticity about the coal-mining region of Western Pennsylvania where she was raised, and she is sure to delight Arts Festival attendees. Lee Stout: An acclaimed presenter during our inaugural BookFestPA, Lee Stout returns with his new book, A Matter of Simple Justice. A departure from his first book, Ice Cream U, this is an equally compelling story about the Nixon’s administration’s drive to include more women in government. A great storyteller, Stout is a BookFestPA favorite.

For the kids…and all kids at heart!

Artie Bennett: This author and highly entertaining speaker will present two story times at Schlow featuring his colorful books for preschoolers, The Butt Book and Poopendous! In clever, comical verse, these charming books relay illuminating information about their highlypopular-with-young-audiences subjects.

Historic Films at the Festival www.arts-festival.com

Fred Waring was known as the man who taught America to sing. For almost seven decades, Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians entertained audiences throughout the world on stage, radio, television, records and in motion pictures. Fred Waring’s America, a special collection of the Penn State University Libraries, contains historical memorabilia reflecting Waring’s long career as a band leader, choral conductor, music educator, and entrepreneur. The films being shown at the Festival are part of the Waring archive.

Syncopation

Friday, July 13 3 p.m.; State • historic film Produced by RKO in 1929, Syncopation was the second motion picture to feature sound on film and was the first film to feature RCA’s “photophone” sound on film process. Penn State’s archival copy is one of only two known copies in the world of this film. Syncopation centers on a pair of vaudevillians who are quite close on and off the stage until a dashing millionaire begins wooing the female partner. She, too, is smitten and begins to pick and needle her partner about his faults. Eventually she dumps him, but it is not too long before the two are reunited to make beautiful music together.

Varsity Show

Saturday, July 14 3 p.m.; State • historic film Varsity Show is a 1937 feature film starring Fred Waring, Dick Powell, Ted Healy, Rosemary and Priscilla Lane, and Johnnie Davis. The film also features songs by Richard A. Whiting and many others, performances by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians, and a memorable collegiate finale choreographed by Busby Berkeley. In Varsity Show, Winfield College students, trying to put together the annual varsity show, come into conflict with their faculty adviser — song and dance ensue! n

Color My World: Color Photographs From the Permanent Collection Through Aug. 19 This exhibition looks at the impulse to color the black-and-white world of photography from the very earliest days of the invention through the gradual embrace of color photography as an artistic medium beginning in the 1970s. A wide range of processes are included, from handtinted tintypes to dye-transfer prints to more recent chromogenic methods. American Quilts From the Terasaki Collection Through Aug. 26 This exhibition features 19th- and early 20th-century American quilts from the private collection of Etsuko Terasaki. Sophisticated in design, they testify to the timeless human impulse to create order and beauty in our surroundings, with whatever resources available, for utility and for pure visual pleasure. Protecting Paper at the Palmer Through Sept. 9 Prints, drawings, watercolors, and photographs are highly susceptible to damage from light, humidity, bugs, stuff in the air — and people. This exhibition examines the steps we take to protect works on paper from harm once they have entered the permanent collection, as well as the conservation efforts we make to mitigate whatever damage may have occurred before works were acquired.

Downtown State College Improvement District Italian Street Painting Festival Hiester Street between College & Beaver Avenues Painting July 12 to 15 (weather permitting) Holly Foy, Coordinator

Italian street painting has been a tradition in Europe since the 16th century and a tradition in State College since 1999! In Renaissance Europe, underemployed artists would draw on the streets as a form of advertising their skill. In America today, artists make street masterpieces for the joy of creating and for the entertainment of appreciative crowds. The Downtown State College Improvement District is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of CPFA’s Italian Street Painting Festival again in 2012. The Downtown State College Italian Street Painting Festival features street painters of national and regional significance. In addition to the major pieces, at least 30 smaller works measuring 6 feet by 4 feet will be drawn by a variety of local visual artists, State College Area High School art students, and Penn State art majors. Finally, our Young Artists Alley provides artists of any age and ability with the opportunity to add to the Festival! For a $5 fee, you get a beautiful

Images 2012 is the juried gallery exhibition of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. The show is open to artists working in ceramic, fiber, and paper, in addition to the traditional fine art categories of drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, printmaking, watercolor, and sculpture. Artists must have their primary residence in Pennsylvania, one of the adjacent states, Virginia, or the District of Columbia. While the exhibition is regional in scope, it is a very large region. In fact, it includes over 20 percent of the population of the United States. The works in Images 2012 were selected by our juror, Barbara McNulty, director of the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery at Lebanon Valley College in Annville. At LebanonValley College, McNulty has developed courses on the history and theory of portraiture, on the body in the art and architecture of the Middle Ages, and on the history of photography. As the director of the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery, she curates exhibitions that span a broad spectrum of art historical interests. McNulty has presented papers at academic conferences throughout the United States. Her art historical research focuses on Byzantine and Medieval portraiture on the island of Cyprus. Most recently, she presented a paper at a study day on Cyprus called Cyprus from Byzantium to the Renaissance held jointly by Dumbarton Oaks and the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington, D.C.

46th Banner Exhibition & Competition Maura McConnell, Chair

Sponsored by Walk's Service Center Each year, the Arts Festival hangs more than 200 banners over the Festival route. Each of these banners was once an entry in the Banner Competition. Entries are judged based on creativity, originality, craftsmanship, durability, and overall design. Cash prizes are awarded in three categories: professional, general, and youth. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Allen Street Stage, 9 a.m. Saturday, July 14. Our 2012 banner jurors are Amy Frank, Mary Moyer, and Kim Horn. Frank is a local artist and mother who recently began teaching sewing classes to children in the State College area. She also creates inspirational jewelry, accessories, and home goods. She has participated in the Three Rivers, Manayunk, and Eagles Mere arts festivals, among others, and is a former recipient of the Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Emerging Artist Award.

Entries from many years of banner competitions hang above the Festival route.

After earning an undergraduate degree at Bucknell University, Moyer taught art to gradeschool children in a creative arts summer program and then began a career as a family therapist. Art always has been an active part of her life, whether through teaching, creating, or appreciating. Horn has lived around the corner from the Arts Festival for 12 years and always enjoys her frontrow seat to the hoopla. She has been knitting and tackling other fiber arts since childhood. Her daughter is excited to participate in the Arts Festival Children & Youth Day for the first time this year. Horn’s day job is as a typesetter for a translation company. n

CPFA Silent Auction www.arts-festival.com

The Silent Auction booth offers a glimpse at the wide variety of works on display throughout the Sidewalk Sale & Exhibition.

Sponsored by Corvette America

The CPFA Silent Auction, which raises money to support Festival programs, is an unqualified

success due to the generosity of exhibitors, the able and enthusiastic leadership of Festival volunteers, and the shopping of hundreds of Festival-goers. Located in the 100 block of South Allen Street, the Silent Auction features a wide array of fine art and craft donated by Sidewalk Sale exhibitors. Many patrons use a visit to the Silent Auction as their jumping-off point before heading out to check out the artists in the Sidewalk Sale & Exhibition. People see something they like in the Silent Auction and take note of whose work it is so that they are sure to stop at the artist’s booth. The proceeds of the Silent Auction help to pay for the Festival, and artists have found that having a piece in the Silent Auction is a great way to bring patrons to their booths. The Silent Auction opens on Thursday, July 12, at noon. It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are from noon to 5 p.m. n

More than 300 exhibitors offer a wide variety of objects for sale including baskets, ceramics, jewelry, fiber, painting, photography, and wearable art. As part of the Sidewalk Sale & Exhibition’s jury process, almost 1,000 artists from the United States and several foreign countries submitted digital images of their work. Pat Farrell Community Sing-Along 7:30 p.m.; Presby Last year’s first-ever Pat Farrell Community SingAlong was such a success that we’re doing it again! For many years, State College residents came together for a“community sing”each week during the summer, under the direction of Frank Gullo of Penn State’s Glee Club and Hummel Fishburn of The Blue Band. This fun tradition disappeared in the 1970s, but the Festival brought it back last year in memory of Pat Farrell, a former Arts Festival board president. Young and old, those who can sing, and especially those who can’t carry a tune in a bucket, are invited to join former Director of Choral Activities at Penn State and Music Director of the State College Choral Society Douglas Miller and Essence of Joy Director Tony Leach as we come together to make some joyful noise. It promises to be a fun evening of traditional songs, folk melodies, camp ditties, and perhaps a show tune or two. Sand Sculpture Festival-goers can watch something incredible emerge over several days from a 25-ton pile of sand in Sidney Friedman Park. Sand sculptor Greg Glenn is a founding partner of Sandscapes and has been a full-time sand sculptor

since 1987. He has performed at hundreds of events and assignments around the world. Originally a land surveyor, he got his sand sculpture start at competitions on Southern California beaches and quickly made the transition to professional sand sculptor, filling key roles in many world record sand sculptures. In addition, he has numerous international, national, and regional sand sculpture titles, including 12 World Sand Sculpture Championships in both team and solo categories. Glenn was one of the original four full-time sand sculptors operating as Sand Sculptors International in the mid to late 1980s. Many of the techniques and procedures developed and refined by this group are now the standard in professional and competitive sand sculpture. n

Flashback Forward 9:30 p.m.; Park • pop/rock Flashback Forward is a State College band whose first two singles, Surrender and Nineteen, have received favorable praise for their anthemic feel and unique sound, most notably from U.K. rock critic Neil McCormick, who has described the band’s sound as potent and atmospheric. Yes, the band has played in the New York City subway. But they’ve also played at popular venues that do not require a fare card or transferring to an express train at Times Square to get uptown quickly. The band looks forward to recording in New York City and being signed by a label. Oh and what does Flashback Forward sound like? Some say psychedelic rock and others say ’90s pop. 10 p.m.; Park • country J.P. Harris and the Tough Choices play country music, period. You won’t hear any new-fangled, nouveau, mod, watered-down, lite, pop/country Idol-ized stuff from them. If you thought country music ain’t what it used to be — and we do mean, “ain’t” — think again. J.P. Harris and The Tough Choices have been resurrecting the ghosts of a time when real, hardcore honky tonk ruled the airwaves, before the words “pop” or “new” ever met the word “country.” Leaving home at the young age of 14, J.P. Harris has lived the songs he writes for well over a decade, getting his start around fires in sheep-herding camps in the Southwest and hobo jungles across the country. Compared by many to George Jones, Harris writes with the humor, grit, and grace of a bona-fide road-worn author. In just over a year, The Tough Choices have traveled nearly 65,000 miles and played nearly 150 dates, from Vermont to Louisiana to California, from festival stages to roadhouses you can’t find on a map. If you like to dance, or even just to tap your foot a bit, and if you like scruffy guys in tight jeans, then don’t miss J.P. Harris and The Tough Choices.

The Sue Crowe Memorial 37th Annual Arts Festival Races

The Arts Festival 10K is the oldest and most storied race in Central Pennsylvania. First run in

1975 as a 10-miler, the Arts Festival race became a 10K in the late 1980s. The course has gone through numerous changes over the years. In 2005, a 5K race was added and a new course created that combines the best of the East and West campuses. Proceeds benefit youth running activities in Centre County and the continuing operations of the Nittany Valley Running Club. 10K and 5K Race Information: The 2012 10K and 5K races will be held on Sunday morning, July 15, at 8:30 a.m. Race HQ will be at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, with start and finish lines nearby. Registration fee is $19 if postmarked by July 13, online through Active.com before July 14, or in person on July 14, and $20 on race day. NVRC members deduct $2. Check the NVRC Arts Festival Race site for application information: www.nvrun.com; click on “Race Calendar.” Kids’ Fun Run: The kids’ run starts at approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 15. The race is a quarter mile for kids 5-6 and a half mile for ages 9-10 and 11-12. Packet Pickup & Late Registration: Participants may pick up race packets or register on Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Central Pennsylvania Convention & Visitors Bureau, 800 E. Park Ave. Raceday registration will be from 7 to 8 a.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Questions may be directed to Dave Egglar at (814) 571-1960 or dhe1@psu.edu. n
