President’s Message

“Your gifts of time and financial resources during this past fiscal year have helped accelerate the pace of new discoveries, create novel learning experiences for the next generation of physicians, and deliver compassionate patient care.”

Our stories of healing, discovery and teaching continued to inspire our friends and partners to be generous with their financial resources this past year, despite the struggling economy. Gifts to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and UNC Health Care totaled more than $83 million during FY 2010. While this was an 11-percent drop over the previous year, the total included a number of bright spots. Gifts from corporations increased by 28 percent, highlighted by a $2 million gift from Sanofi-Aventis for cancer research and patient support. In fact, gifts to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center were up in every category of support, and included a generous commitment from Rich and Marilyn Preyer for a new breast cancer professorship. Other highlights included an additional $5.4 million commitment from Lucius Blanchard, MD for the Lucius Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarship program in the School of Medicine. The Blanchard Scholars program continues to be an innovative approach to funding medical education. Thanks to donors like Dr. Blanchard, the Medical Foundation provided over $4.5 million in financial aid to medical students during the fiscal year through the income of its donated scholarships. Almost $7 million was committed to support professorships in both research and teaching throughout the school, from anesthesiology to neurology to pharmacology. Fundraising to support cardiology and the newly formed UNC McAllister Heart Institute was especially strong, totaling more than $3 million. To lay the groundwork for future fundraising initiatives, we began a strategic planning process in the spring. As a result of the planning process, we hope to better engage potential donors, to make our fundraising projects even more compelling to them, and to enhance their satisfaction once they become donors. In addition, we plan to strengthen strategic partnerships within the UNC family and to better communicate our mission and accomplishments. While this work will continue beyond the end of the fiscal year, it has been gratifying for all involved to reconfirm our mutual commitment to support the missions of the School of Medicine and UNC Health Care. Your gifts of time and financial resources during this past fiscal year have helped accelerate the pace of new discoveries, create novel learning experiences for the next generation of physicians, and deliver compassionate patient care. Thank you for being such an integral part of our wonderful story.

Steelman estate creates distinguished professorship and four graduate student endowments Thanks to the generosity of the late Dr. Sanford L. Steelman, Sr., three new endowments have been established at the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. for the UNC School of Medicine. Through his estate, Steelman provided funds to create the Sanford Steelman Distinguished Professorship in Pharmacology, the Sanford Steelman Graduate Student Fund in Pharmacology,

helping us compete for the very best pharmacology students. Likewise, the professorship gives us an edge in recruiting and retaining top faculty.” The graduate student funds will be used to support students with demonstrated financial need, as well as academic merit. It was Steelman’s wish that preference be “given to students born in the State of North Carolina, or to American Indians.”

“These graduate students are our future leaders. We hope that what they accomplish will make what came before them look small in comparison...” and the Sanford Steelman Graduate Student Fund in Cell and Molecular Physiology. Steelman also provided funds to create the Sanford Steelman Graduate Student Fund in Chemistry for the UNC Department of Chemistry.

Carol Otey, associate chair of the Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology, says “There are very few Native Americans or underrepresented minorities in the basic sciences. This opens a lot of doors for them.”

Steelman bequeathed $100,000 for each graduate student fund and $333,000 for the distinguished professorship. The professorship qualifies for a state match of $167,000 from the State of North Carolina’s Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund.

Steelman, a native of Hickory, N.C., had a strong work ethic. When his family ran into hard times in the early 1940s, Steelman, then only a teenager, went to work loading boxcars in the railyards of Asheville, N.C.—strenuous, low-paying work that was usually only reserved for local American Indian men. It was here that the young Steelman became aware of the plight of the American Indian, a learning experience he would not forget. After graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne College, Steelman entered the

UNC School of Medicine, where he earned a doctorate in biochemistry and physiology in 1949. Following his graduation, he joined Armour Pharmaceutical Company and earned distinction as a biomedical research scientist. Two years later, he assumed leadership of the biochemistry department. In 1956, he became associate professor of biochemistry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. From there, Steelman joined Merck Research Labs and worked in various leadership capacities, including serving as director of international clinical pharmacology. He wrote more than 100 articles in scientific publications and obtained five patents. He retired as senior scientific investigator from Merck & Co. Inc.

In 1988, Steelman was recognized by an international committee as one of 200 people, living or dead, who had made a major contribution to reproductive and endocrine medicine. He shares this honor with more than a dozen Nobel Prize winners. He passed away on November 1, 2008. “These graduate students are our future leaders. We hope that what they accomplish will make what came before them look small in comparison,” says Steelman’s son Sanford, Jr. About the professorship, Steelman’s son Brian says, “My father always felt it was important to expose students to great minds, to inspire them to do great things themselves.” – Edward Byrnes

Doughnuts to Dollars: $125K+ and counting

An unlikely dare among college friends becomes the ultimate collegiate challenge and nets tens of thousands of dollars for N.C. Children’s Hospital. One hour. Four miles. Twelve doughnuts. Twenty-four hundred calories. Tens of thousands of dollars for North Carolina Children’s Hospital! N.C. State University’s newest (and perhaps most infamous!) tradition, the Krispy Kreme Challenge, is raising serious cash for N.C. Children’s Hospital, one doughnut at a time. But it didn’t start out that way. The Krispy Kreme Challenge actually began as a dare among friends at N.C. State University. The parameters? Run two miles from State’s bell tower to the Person Street Krispy Kreme store, down 12 doughnuts, and run back to the bell tower—all in under an hour, without puking. A group of about 15 students gathered at the bell tower for the inaugural race on a cold morning in December 2004 and ran into sweet history. The event caught the attention of campus newspapers and, later, found greater notoriety on Sports Illustrated’s “102 More

Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate” list. Organizers decided to capitalize on the Challenge’s ability to capture the imagination and draw crowds by turning the race into a fundraiser for N.C. Children’s Hospital. Since its humble beginnings, the Krispy Kreme Challenge has seen nearly exponential growth, both in terms of the number of participants and the money raised. (See inset table.) In fact, the 2010 Challenge this past February was the biggest to date, drawing 6,000 racers poised to devour more than 72,000 glazed doughnuts and hundreds more spectators. As has become tradition, many of them dressed in less-than-conventional running attire, adding to the pre-race revelry. Superman, a pair of sombrero-wearing tacos, and a man wearing nothing but sneakers and a black Speedo (despite 30-degree temperatures!) were among the first runners out of the gate, just behind a doughnutheaded mascot. After the final runners left the starting line, a group of race organizers gathered at the base of the Bell Tower with the Children’s Hospital’s chief physician, Dr. Alan Stiles, to make a check presentation. “Doctors don’t often advocate the consumption of doughnuts, but the Krispy Kreme Challenge is the one time of year I’m willing to make an exception,” joked Stiles as he accepted the super-sized check from the students. The cardboard check, written to the Children’s Hospital in the amount of “forty thousand dollars (+ more),” was later replaced by a real check for $55,000, proving perhaps that doughnuts, when consumed for a cause, can actually improve children’s heath. – Danielle Bates

N.C. Cancer Hospital endowment receives $2 million gift from Sanofi-Aventis to enhance programs, research

In a ceremony held last December at the N.C. Cancer Hospital, Sanofi-Aventis Chief Executive Officer Chris Viehbacher and other company leaders announced Sanofi-Aventis US’s commitment of $2 million toward the N.C. Cancer Hospital endowment—which helps support the institution’s clinical research and many patient programs. “This investment in the N.C. Cancer Hospital is a tremendous expression of belief and confidence in our faculty, scientists and staff, and their track record of success in fighting cancer in North Carolina and the nation. This gift will support critical clinical research and program enhancements that will directly benefit cancer patients—both today and for years to come,” said William L. Roper, MD, MPH, dean of the School of Medicine, vice chancellor for Medical Affairs and chief executive officer of the UNC Health Care System.

off the main lobby, the suite of four conference rooms is the hub of multidisciplinary care, interdisciplinary communication, and outreach from UNC to the state and beyond— allowing UNC physicians to consult in real time with referring physicians across the state. Dick Krasno, chair of the UNC Health Care Board of Directors, said, “We are pleased to announce that the UNC Health Care recognizes this commitment by naming the N.C. Cancer Hospital Conference Center for Sanofi-Aventis US.We particularly appreciate Sanofi-Aventis’ recognition of the need for support for the N.C. Cancer Hospital and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.” – Ellen de Graffenreid

Roper noted that the newly-constructed hospital was entirely funded by the people of North Carolina through an appropriation from the state legislature, meaning that private gifts to the hospital’s endowment directly benefit patients and programs. “Sanofi-Aventis is honored to be here today and to offer support to the N.C. Cancer Hospital in their pursuit of new and innovative research and expanded patient services,” said Chris Viehbacher, chief executive officer at Sanofi-Aventis. “Sanofi-Aventis has been committed to supporting clinical research … with a focus on oncology for more than 50 years. This donation is another example of the company’s steadfast commitment to advancing research and helping patients in this area.” In recognition of the donation, N.C. Cancer Hospital’s advanced telecommunications conference center has been named “The Sanofi-Aventis Conference Center.” Located

An Opportunity to Live Sometimes a promising idea rises to the surface almost on its own and becomes an overnight success, pulling in grant money and accolades. Other times, promising ideas must be nurtured before they are granted the attention they need to succeed.

ack in the early 1990s, Dr. Thomas Egan had such an idea. He thought that, instead of there being only 1,500 lung transplants done each year in the US, there could be as many as 50,000 if different organ harvesting techniques were used. It took the help of a grateful patient and her family to keep this idea alive and nurture it until the evidence for Egan’s method became so compelling that, in 2009, the National Institutes of Health awarded him and his research team at UNC Hospitals a $1.47 million grant to fund more extensive research. When Cornelia Doherty Condon came to UNC Hospitals in 1993, she was worn and frail, barely able to breathe due to advanced cystic fibrosis. For more than thirty years, she had been treated for the disease by doctors in her home city of Boston. But now, she was told, there was nothing more her doctors could do. The only thing left to try was a transplant. Unfortunately, lungs for transplants are very hard to come by, and Condon’s own lungs had been colonized by a chronic bacterium that dimmed her chances of being a successful transplant recipient. These two factors made the transplant program at Massachusetts General, where she had been receiving her care, reject her as a transplant candidate. “She was totally devastated,” remembers her brother, John Doherty. “They had basically given her a death sentence.” But Condon’s doctor refused to give up on her. He finally found a program that would accept her – UNC Hospital’s Lung Transplant program, under Egan’s direction. Even though she had been accepted into the program at UNC, the process of getting new lungs was slow. Condon’s health deteriorated further as she waited for a suitable donor until one day, six months later, the long-awaited call arrived. “Dr. Egan did a wonderful job,” says Doherty. “Cornelia was in the hospital for about a week or ten days. Then she dived into rehab. She wrote a letter saying that she didn’t look at it as getting a new set of lungs. She looked at it as getting a life.” And that is exactly what Condon did when she returned to Boston. “She embraced life,” recalls Doherty fondly. “She went back to work and began doing, again, all of the things she loved and wanted to do.”

“One of those things was helping to raise money for Dr. Egan’s transplant research. She was very impressed with everyone at UNC Hospitals—so high on the whole program and everybody down there. And she became very committed to helping them continue their work of trying to make more lungs available to more transplant patients.”

Six months later, however, Condon’s fundraising efforts were cut short by her death from an opportunistic infection. In her memory, her parents and brother donated $5,000 to Egan’s transplant research fund. But Doherty kept remembering his sister’s dedication to Egan’s work and wanted to honor her life in a more enduring way. A year later, on his way to the beach in North Carolina, Doherty stopped in Chapel Hill to attend a donor appreciation lunch--sponsored by The Medical Foundation of NC – where he had a chance to talk to Egan again. “John said he’d been very impressed with the treatment his sister had received at UNC – how quick we were to answer calls and all of that. He had assumed that at least in part it was because of the family’s line of business. But we hadn’t known anything about that. We just treated her like we would any other patient. That’s when we found out that Cornelia’s father ran a bank and her brother was its CEO,” recalls Egan. Before the two men parted company that day, Doherty wrote Egan a check for $10,000. He has made a similar donation every year since then, contributing almost $100,000 to date. “The money was not for an endowment; it was for our research,” Egan explained. “And it has made a huge difference. It can be a hard sell to convince people that there is a way to safely and effectively make more lungs available for transplant, and it’s been very hard to convince granting agencies to give us the funding we need to do the necessary research to perfect this idea. The gifts from John Doherty have allowed us to do the early work on this concept that we otherwise couldn’t have done. They’ve also helped us continue our research when we were between grants, or needed special materials that our other funding wouldn’t cover.” “It’s not a lot of money, in the grand scheme of things,” Doherty said, modestly. “It’s just what Cornelia would have wanted me to do. It would have been too restrictive to ask that the money go for any specific thing. After all, you never know where the next great idea is going to come from. And when that great idea arrives, its development doesn’t always follow a linear path. Research often has to wander and take off on different paths.” “Cornelia believed in Dr. Egan’s research, and so do I. After all, UNC gave my sister an opportunity to really live again for the last six months of her life. That meant so much to me, to see her acting like her old self again.” “It’s easy for people to go through day-to-day life and maybe not understand what other people go through. But I could see what Cornelia went through before her transplant and after it. Donating can help you gain a little more perspective … It also makes you feel good.” – Brenda Denzler | 13
