Naomh Brid shade Division 4 decider sport@dublingazette.com
AN AMY Quinn goal i n s i d e t wo m i n u t e s proved the tonic for Naomh Brid to deny Lucan Sarsfields the Dublin Division 4 camogie Feile title at O’Toole Park last Sunday, eventually seeing them over the line 2-1 to 0-3.
It was a game that had loads of skill and a thrilling finish but, despite looking the more dangerous, the Russell Park outfit could not establish their dominance on the scoreboard as Lucan defended superbly. Faye Murphy was a potential match winner and looked the part
when she scored a lovely point from play in the ninth minute. However Zoe Mayne played a captain’s role for Naomh Brid when she netted her team’s second goal before halftime to give them a 2-0 to 0-1 lead. Naomh Brid also had an outstanding player in Deirdre McCarthy and
her skill, strength and the length of her deliveries were big pluses. She added a fine point in the second period and, although Murphy grabbed her second, Lucan needed a goal. But green flags were scarce and Sarah Murphy in the Lucan goal did her bit to ensure it stayed that way.

1-1 0-1
DUBLIN chairman Pat Martin described this game as an “epic” and he was right. From pillar to post, both sides went at the game with huge intensity, bravery and skill and, for most of the 40 minutes, it looked like extra time was a certainty. Both sides had a huge fan base with Erin’s Isle as usual suppor ting their team in droves. The Peregrine twins – Aoife and Niamh Hef-
fernan – were mighty for their team in defence and attack. For Isles, Molly Brown stood out for her skill and her willingness to lead by example. These are players of whom we will hear more in the years ahead. Twenty titanic minutes of thrilling fare failed to produce a score in the first half but not for the lack of effort as both defences put in tackle after tackle to deny their opponents best efforts. A spectacular 50m solo run by Amy Deegan earned a free for the
Blakestown girls but the stroke fell short. This was the spark that sent Brown on her own 50m run for Isles only to see the final shot skim the outside of the post. Peregrine’s were handed another free eight minutes into the second half but Niamh Heffernan’s shot was blocked on the line. However, before the ball could be fully cleared the same player used her strength and ability to recover possession to point. The Isles’ reaction was swift when Molly Brown, who was later
named player of the match, hammered over a great leveller with time pushing on. T he game seemed destined for extra time, especially after Isles’ keeper Caoimhe O’Toole made another great save but Peregrine’s had one last assault left. A lovely centre by Eirinn Kavanagh was heading for the hand of Aoife Heffernan. She failed to control the ball properly but it fell forward and crept over the goal line for the winner for Blakestown’s Naomh Peregrine.
