But when voters of the new county had their first election in 1857, they overwhelmingly decided on a new name: Kitsap, after Chief Kitsap of the Suquamish Tribe. We made history. And then we made a name for ourselves. Kitsap County, which includes Bainbridge and Blake islands and the Kitsap Peninsula, boasts more than 250 miles of saltwater shoreline, as well as resplendent outdoor areas and vibrant, active communities. Kitsap was carved out of King and Jefferson counties when the Washington Territory was created in 1853.
Kitsap has made a name for itself in many ways since, from its marinas and museums, to its beaches and brews. Great dining and fun activities are endless. The area has an abundance of farmers, growers and producers, and their fresh ingredients help create delicious foods and beverages. Many of these products are used by local restaurants, bakeries and caterers. The Kitsap Peninsula has plenty of places to sample fine cuisine, taste locally brewed beer or local wines, snack on a scone, ice cream treat or some local chocolates. Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial 4192 Eagle Harbor Drive NE
The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial is a historical and informational site commemorating the actual location where the first West Coast Japanese Americans were forced from their homes following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Because of the island’s proximity to naval bases, local Japanese Americans were the first in the country to be interned, and 227 Japanese Americans were ultimately ordered to leave the island with only six days’ notice. The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) 550 Winslow Way East
BIMA showcases artists from around the Puget Sound through rotating displays of pieces from their permanent collection and also special seasonal exhibitions. Admission is free. www.biartmuseum.org
Bloedel Reserve
7571 NE Dolphin Drive An experiential public garden and forest reserve, a mixed tapestry of woodlands, meadows, and landscaped gardens, the reserve offers 150 acres to explore and 14 distinct landscapes accessed by about 2 miles of well-maintained bark and gravel trails and paved roads. Summer hours (from May 27 through Sept. 2) are Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Sunday. Clear Creek Trail: The year was 1841 and Captain Charles Wilkes had just managed the tricky task of navigating through a narrow channel from Puget Sound, eventually arriving in a large bay. This bay would come to be known as Dyes Inlet and divides roughly half of the geographical area of Kitsap County. As
the legend goes, in 1886, shortly after Mrs. Hannah Schold moved to the area — making her one of the first non-natives to call the area home — Schold remarked at just how clear the small creek that ran in front of her home was, this despite a recent storm that had rolled through the area. The name, it appears, stuck and the small creek that meanders through Silverdale’s green valley became known as Clear Creek. In 1950 Kirk Best constructed his barn near the mouth of Clear Creek, using recycled and surplus materials from a nearby Army barracks and another, older barn. Tides End, as the barn was called by the Best family, guarded the mouth of Clear Creek for a decade before the property was sold to Carlton and Betty Smith in 1960. The Smith family resided at the property for some 30 years, raising a family near Clear Creek, before donating the barn and the surrounding property to the Kitsap Land Trust (now the Great Peninsula Conservancy). The Smiths’ generous donation proved to be the ember from which the Clear Creek Trail has grown. In 1995, after years of neglect, the Clear Creek Task Force began the arduous process of renovating the old barn in a new interpretive center. After seven years of work the Clear Creek Sa’qad Interpretive Center was born and today stands ready to receive visitors and students in search of the wisdom contained within. Parking and the trailhead for the Clear Creek trail are both located just north of Silverdale.

Nestled at the northern end of Hood Canal, Port Gamble lies just to the east of the Hood Canal Bridge, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone on their way to — or from — the Olympic

Peninsula. Late 19th century style homes exhibit the unique New England aesthetic cultivated by this former company town. It’s a perfect place for visitors to take a stroll while admiring the many shops, learning about historic buildings and sampling the local fare. A visit to the Port Gamble General Store is a must for any new visitors and the Sea and Shore Museum located upstairs is sure to catch the attention of an inquiring mind. Located just below the General Store, visitors can find the Port Gamble Historical Museum, which contains the history of this one time mill town. The Port Gamble Historic Cemetery is located just up the hill and overlooks the bay, a fitting resting place for those who called Port Gamble their final home. The cemetery dates back to 1856, when U.S. Navy Coxswain Gustave Englebrecht of the USS Massachusetts fell in skirmish between the Navy and a raiding party from the Tlingit Tribe. Englebrecht is credited as the first U.S. Navy
sailor killed in the Pacific and was laid to rest at the cemetery. Today, Port Gamble is also an attraction for those seeking to commune with the great beyond via ghost tours and paranormal investigations. The historic WalkerAmes house in particular is said to host a number of “permanent residents” who never left the home, despite their own physical departure from the mortal realm. In November, the town hosts the Port Gamble Ghost Conference wherein speakers from the world over come to share their experiences with the paranormal. Psychic readings, paranormal investigation classes and vendors can all be found at the three-day event as well.
Bremerton USS Turner Joy
Located at 300 Washington Beach Ave. along the Bremerton waterfront sits the USS Turner Joy. Once a mighty Navy destroyer,

Poulsbo
At 19010 Front St. NE in Poulsbo, you can find the Maritime History Museum, and it’s not hard to miss with the scale replica of the historic mosquito fleet vessel Hyak facing Front Street. Poulsbo’s Maritime History Museum showcases the Viking City’s close connection to the water. Guests are invited to plumb the depths of Poulsbo’s seafaring history, from the Alaskan codfish fleets that called Poulsbo home to the local farmers who traveled the surrounding shores to sell their goods, and right up to the visiting yachts, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards that cruise the waters of Liberty Bay today.

Sounds of Summer Bainbridge Island The weekly Sounds of Summer concert series, presented by the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, will return to Battle Point Park in July and August. Waterfront Park & City Dock 301 Shannon Drive SE The new dock is now open and ready for public use! Waterfront Park is one of the most popular civic and social gathering places for island residents and visitors alike. It welcomes annual festivals, summer performances, special events, picnics, music performances and more. It provides sunny lawn areas for play and relaxation

and easy access to the water’s edge for boating and tranquil views of Eagle Harbor. The 5.5-acre park also supports a children’s play area. Waterfront Park is bordered by the downtown area featuring a wide range of restaurants, businesses and retail stores within walking distance. The 900-foot city dock is directly south of Waterfront Park. It is open year-round and is first-come, first-served and vessels raft together. Blakely Harbor Park Head of Blakely Harbor, closest cross streets are Blakely Avenue and 3-T Road This 40-acre park is on the former site of
Port Blakely Mill, one of the world’s largest sawmills in the late 1800s, and is perfect for recreational uses like picnicking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.

Point White Pier 3949 Crystal Springs Drive NE An important port for the island’s historic Mosquito fleet, the 100foot dock and surrounding park is now an ideal spot for fishing, gorgeous vistas and scuba diving. Also, the waterfront drive to get there is pretty easy on the eyes. This is an ideal photo op in both ideal and tumultuous weather, as the pier looks especially cool in some fine thick Northwest fog. Those interested in a scenic bike ride will be pleased by the sparkling Rich Passage views upon approach via Point White Drive. However, those looking for a real workout should maybe plan to end their ride here, as the three-mile stretch of shoreline is mostly flat.
Bainbridge Island Historical Museum 215 Ericksen Ave NE Get educated about the history of Bainbridge at the island’s historical museum - housed in a 1908 schoolhouse. It has artifacts, photos and hands-on exhibits related to Bainbridge through the years. Fay Bainbridge Park 15446 Sunrise Dr NE Fay Bainbridge Park is a 17-acre marine camping park with no day-use fees and 1,420 feet of saltwater shoreline. The park offers sweeping views of Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains and features sandy beaches and plenty of driftwood to climb on. There is also a playground and picnic tables complete will grills. On clear days, Mount Rainier and Mount Baker are visible from a sandy beach.

The Grand Forest 9752 Miller Road NE The Grand Forest encompasses 240 acres across three separate parcels, with approximately 8 miles of trails in an understory of largely second growth forest, which was previously a State of Washington Department of Natural Resources tract. The Grand Forest is a popular destination for trail users on Bainbridge Island. It has a canopy of lush firs, cedars and maples and a few giant conifers. Trails are relatively flat with few inclines and a trail surface of dirt, mulch and gravel. There is currently no wheelchair accessibility. Approximately 10 parking spaces are located at the parking area at Miller Road and the West Grand Forest and eight spaces are located at the East Grand Forest, Mandus Olson Road. The West Grand Forest (121 acres) is a trail user destination with the “Main Trail” loop being a flat 1.5-mile walk with wood bridge over Issei Creek and a small pond on the eastern boundary shared with Hilltop. The rock cairn off the Ron Williamson Trillium Trail (1 mile) is also a popular stopping point. Forest to Sky Trail, McRedmond Trail and Hilltop Trail are three connecting pathways that lead from West Grand Forest to East Grand Forest. The Forest to Sky Trail is the longest (1 mile) and leads from West Grand Forest to Battle Point Park. The North Grand Forest (39 acres) is a separate non-contiguous park parcel with similar terrain and forest canopy.

Japanese American Exclusion Memorial 4192 Eagle Harbor Drive NE The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial is a historical and informational site commemorating the actual location where the first West Coast Japanese Americans were forced from their homes following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Because of the island’s proximity to naval bases, local Japanese Americans were the first in the country to be interned, and 227 Japanese Americans were ultimately ordered to leave the island with only six days’ notice. Battle Point Park 11299 Arrow Point Drive NE The mother of all parks on the Rock, Battle Point totals 90.3 acres of scenic space. It’s a former naval radio station and is largely open space with two ponds, jogging trail, two soccer fields, three softball fields, horse area, a picnic shelter, two tennis courts, play areas, two basketball courts shared with a roller hockey court, a large children’s play structure, garden plots, disc golf course, an observatory and the park district maintenance shop and offices. The covered picnic shelter is heavily used and reservations are recommended (206-842-2302), but courts are available for casual play.

Capt. George Vancouver had no idea what lay beyond the wooded coastline of Bainbridge Island as he explored Puget Sound in 1792. A half century later, however, Capt. Charles Wilkes discovered that the place we call home was actually an island unto itself, set apart from the pennisula to the west by Agate Passage. Wilkes proclaimed the isle Bainbridge Island, in honor of Commodore William Bainbridge, a hero of the War of 1812 who was in command of the USS Constitution during its victorious battle against the HMS Java, where Bainbridge was wounded twice but maintained command of his ship. His deeds would soon earn him the Congressional Gold Medal. Our Bainbridge, as well, has distinguished itself as worthy of the gold standard. The island has been widely recognized as one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest — and the country. It’s a place with a world-class quality of life, rich and diverse history, abundant natural beauty, outstanding schools and a deeply committed and caring community.
Winslow, the island’s downtown and commercial heart, is just a short walk from the ferry terminal. Get your bearings at The Waypoint, the city’s gateway park that was built by volunteers a few years ago, before heading into town. Just across the street from The Waypoint is the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, a crown jewel in Kitsap County’s cultural offerings, a free-admission facility that opened in 2013 and features artists from Bainbridge and across the region. Continue along Winslow Way, the main street through downtown, to find multiple art galleries, boutiques, one-of-a-kind stores, cafes and coffee shops, remarkable restaurants and one of the best independent book stores in Puget Sound. Winslow Way has changed with the times but is still rooted in the past; a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare that for more than 140 years has served the diverse residents of the Eagle Harbor towns of Madrone, then Winslow, and today, the city of Bainbridge Island. On the south side of Bainbridge, in the heart of Lynwood, is Pleasant Beach Village, a shopping, dining and entertainment haven hidden just off the island’s busier roads. The area is home to the historic Lynwood Theatre, as well as new and bustling businesses in Pleasant Beach Village. While you are strolling around, make sure to stop in The Treehouse Café, which is an exciting and welcoming pub and pizzeria located in the historic Lynwood Center. Or grab a bite at the Marketplace, self-serve froyo spot Island Cool, “Best of Bainbridge” hamburger pick Hammy’s Hamburgers, The Beach House Bar & Grill, or get even classier at Manor House Restaurant. Don’t forget the furry family members either - or maybe meet a new beloved pet - because Pleasant Beach boasts two specialty spots for critters: Salty Dog Wash and PAWS at Pleasant Beach, an adoption advocacy and education center. There’s even a pool - a 25-yard recreation pool, a children’s wading pool and a hot tub, too - at the Pool at Pleasant Beach.

Tour the historic mill town of Port Gamble
Originally, Port Gamble was a community consisting almost entirely of employees of the Pope & Talbot sawmill. In the years since Andrew Pope and William Talbot laid claim to the land, situated near the shore at the northern end of the Hood Canal, Port Gamble has become something of a tourist hotspot. Port Gamble offers something for those seeking to delve into local history and stroll the streets perusing the wares of the local shops, artists and farmer’s market. Not to mention the various events held in Port Gamble each year, including the Paranormal Conference wherein folks from the world over congregate to talk shop on all things supernatural. Indeed Port Gamble has something for everyone, including those with a refined palate as well, with the Butcher & Baker Provisions’ locally sourced cuisine, butcher shop and bakery.
Point No Point Lighthouse
A beacon of light on a foggy night, the Point No Point Lighthouse is a lifeline for mariners navigating Puget Sound. Built in 1879, the lighthouse has served as a navigational aid ever since its inception and is regarded as Puget Sound’s oldest lighthouse. Today the lighthouse continues to serve as a navigational aid, warning sailors of the nearby treacherous shoal and as the unofficial demarkation of the entrance to Puget Sound. A weekend visit to the Point No Point Lighthouse offers
the opportunity to take a tour between noon and 4 p.m., April through September. The nearby beach is a sprawling, sandy shoreline just begging for a family picnic. Visitors often build forts from the piles of driftwood that wash ashore at the point and the nearby wetlands provide a prime spot for birdwatchers to observe a great variety of waterrelated species, including gulls, cormorants, loons, terns, jaegers, ducks, grebes, mergansers, scoters, brant and alcids.

Visitors to Poulsbo should make time to rent a kayak from the Olympic Outdoor Center in order to really get a feel for the Viking City’s close

Beginner paddlers can easily handle the paddle from the Port of Poulsbo Marina, up north to the Dogfish Creek Estuary to examine some of the natural wonder still preserved in the area. Another solid bet for newbie paddlers is a trip south to the nearby Oyster Plant Park where a dock offers the opportunity for novice paddlers to get out and stretch their legs before making a trip back. Not your first time in a kayak? Well, how about making the whole loop between both the estuary and Oyster Plant Park. If that’s not enough, veteran kayakers can enjoy a paddle from Poulsbo to Keyport, where they can beach their boats and head up to the Keyport Mercantile for a little grub. Olympic Outdoor Center will also host the Paddle Kitsap event Aug. 10, wherein kayakers will make the journey from Fay Bainbridge State Park, all the way down to Poulsbo.
Kingston Waterfront
An oft-overlooked gem, the Kingston waterfront contains spectacular views
of the intersectionality of nature and mankind’s innovation. A sweeping eastern view, sometimes prominently featuring Mount Rainier in the distance, will often be accompanied by the sight of one of Washington State Ferries’ vessels making a crossing from Kingston to Edmonds. Not to be outdone by the massive ferries are Kingston’s (almost equally) massive adirondack chairs, prominently featured throughout town. Visitors are welcome to climb up onto the chairs, take a load off, enjoy their lunch (preferably from a comically massive lunchbox), or snap photos. If you happen to find yourself stopping in Kingston, do yourself a favor and snap a couple selfies with your legs dangling from one of these giant chairs and then just wait for the confused comments on social media.
Try lutefisk in Poulsbo
For more than a century, Poulsbo has been known for its annual Lutefisk Dinner, hosted by the First Lutheran Church. In fact, lutefisk happens to be a large part of the local identity, what with the town having been dubbed the “Viking City.” The Scandinavian,
lye-cured fish is often featured at local events like Viking Fest (May 17-19), which features a lutefisk eating contest. The contest sees contestants racing each other to see who can finish a pound of lutefisk first. After multiple rounds (yes, multiple rounds), only the strongest persevere. That said, if attending a dinner entirely dedicated to consuming lutefisk or entering a competition in which the contestants are tasked with choking down pounds of the fish don’t sound like appealing ways to try lutefisk for the first time, you could always make a stop over at the Slippery Pig Brewery in Downtown Poulsbo. The Slippery Pig offers a somewhat familiar dish in their lutefisk tacos, although it should be noted that their menu says “if you don’t know what ‘lutefisk’ is, you don’t want it.”
Walk the Indianola Pier
No trip to the Kitsap Peninsula is complete without a stop-over in Indianola to take a gander at the views and tread the boards of the wonderful Indianola Pier. Easily identified by the sprawling 900-foot-long pier, Indianola’s most notable feature was also once its only tie to the outside world. Before a road was punched in connecting Indianola to Poulsbo, the only way in and out of the vacation community was via boat. Today, the dock is a summertime favorite among young men and women looking to cool off in the (often frigid) waters below. Locals and residents will occasionally leap from the pier at high tide and then swim to shore for an exhilarating experience. Editors note: The time spent falling into the water is usually just long

Learn about the world beneath the waves
Weaving through the woods and along the bank of Dogfish Creek are a series of trails, situated between Bond Road and Viking Avenue NE in Poulsbo, the 40-acre Fish Park offers visitors the opportunity to see a side of Poulsbo untouched by the rising development and constant growth felt elsewhere throughout Kitsap. In the fall, visitors can watch as salmon return to their native streams to spawn. The attraction draws quite the crowd of visitors to the park, hoping to catch a glimpse of one. Visitors
Western Washington University operates Poulsbo’s SEA Discovery Center, which serves as a veritable font of information for visitors hungry to learn about the watery world surrounding the Kitsap Peninsula. The aquarium features exhibits of local species from the Puget Sound and the nearby Salish Sea. A replica tide pool is also onsite where visitors can interact with sea stars, anemones and other critters from the depths below. From Oct. 1 to July 2, the center is opened from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. on the weekends. From July 3 through Labor Day, the center is open from summer 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday and closed on
Mondays.

Best take advantage of the hoppy innovations happening right under your nose (and we mean that literally) and visit some of the area’s local breweries. Poulsbo is home to five breweries: Sound Brewery, Slippery Pig Brewery, Valhöll Brewing, Western Red Brewing and Rainy Daze Brewing. Kingston has two in Downpour Brewing and the Hood Canal Brewery.
Learn about Torpedo Town, USA
In Keyport, the United States Naval Undersea Museum offers visitors a bounty of knowledge related to undersea warfare. Learn about the boats (and ordnance) that go boom, including submarines, torpedoes, sea mines and more local Naval history than you could rattle a deck chain at. Visitors can also check out the actual control room of the USS Greenling, which has been moved into the museum’s facilities.

NORTH KITSAP discover more Hansville
Those who prefer to get out in the country, away from any sort of large-scale development, are sure to find Hansville appealing. The rural setting and proximity to the water make it a perfect location to spend an afternoon (or longer) getting away from the trappings of a busy life. Visitors to the small community’s Norwegian Point Park can find a prime location for picnics or just enjoy a sandwich during a lunch hour. Sweeping views of Puget Sound and a clean, sandy beach are the hallmarks of Norwegian Point Park. If they wait long enough, visitors to Hansville will often be treated to a view of the mighty freighters, military ships and other various commercial vessels making their way to and from Seattle. Visitors should be sure to stop by the Hansgrill or Peninsula Pies to enjoy a tasty treat.
Port Gamble
The streets of this old logging town haven’t changed much since the 19th century. Today, Port Gamble is a popular tourist destination filled with unique textile, antique and gift shops, a historic theatre and refreshing, tasty restaurants. Many of the businesses are located in original New England-style homes that have been restored and preserved. The town is also known for its paranormal activity and hosts an annual Ghost Conference in October.
Poulsbo
With the nickname the Viking City, one would half expect the City of Poulsbo to be perpetually engulfed in flames as seafaring raiders continuously plundered the local shops. Quite the contrary, actually. The City of Poulsbo is a quiet, quaint
waterfront town with a proud Scandinavian history. Poulsbo celebrates the history and culture of its forebearers with the annual Viking Fest celebration in May. Visitors to the town would be remiss to leave Poulsbo without having stopped at one (or all) of its five craft breweries: Rainy Daze Brewing, Slippery Pig Brewery, Sound Brewery, Valhöll Brewing and Western Red Brewing.

Indianola
Indianola lies within the boundaries of the Port Madison Reservation. Originally established as a summer/weekend community, W.L. Gazzam began constructing a dock in 1916 in an attempt at enticing potential real estate buyers. The only way of accessing the community was through steamboat until 1939 when a road was constructed connecting the surrounding areas. Indianola thrives in the summer months when the weather is hot and the views are spectacular from the beach. The pier and 900-foot dock remain the most prominent features of the community and is one of the best places in the area to look at
the stars. A big tradition for the community is Indianola Days, which occurs in August.
Keyport
Trademarked as “Torpedo Town, USA,” Keyport is home to a small depot of torpedos that are ranged and repaired for the U.S. Navy and allies. Features of the town include the Port of Keyport Marina and the Keyport Mercantile & Diner, an old-fashioned grocery store with excellent sandwiches, ice cream and great views of the nearby marina.
Kingston

CANNABIS IN KITSAP COUNTY Since the recreational use of marijuana became legal in the state of Washington in 2014, numerous retail locations have opened up in Kitsap County. Anyone 21 years of age or older can purchase up to one ounce of harvested flower marijuana, 16 ounces of marijuana-infused edibles in solid form, 72 ounces in liquid form, and seven grams of marijuana concentrates. You’ll need a horizontal I.D. that shows your age before entering any of these retail stores. Most stores only accept cash, although some do accept debit cards with a small fee.
Things to Know: n It remains a felony for anyone but a licensed retailer to sell or provide marijuana to anyone else. Providing or selling marijuana to a minor under the age of 18 is subject to 10
years in prison and a $10,000 fine. n It is illegal to consume marijuana in public view. It is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana and in doing so may result in significant legal penalties. n You cannot take marijuana out of the state. n As with tobacco, smoking marijuana in any indoor location is subject to the restrictions in the Washington Smoking in Public Places law. The law prohibits smoking in public places or places of employment and within 25 feet of entrances, exits, open windows and ventilation intakes. If the establishment permits it, and you are either vaporizing or staying in a room where smoking is allowed, it is legal to consume marijuana in a private hotel room. n If you are boating and in navigable waters,
according to the U.S. Coast Guard, they will enforce federal law. Possession of marijuana is still federally illegal. It is never ok to operate a boat under the influence of marijuana or any other drug. The law against marijuana use in public view also applies to state parks, public hiking trails, national parks and ski resorts. Downtown Silverdale
Silverdale is known as the shopping center of Kitsap County because the Kitsap Mall is located downtown. The mall includes more than 100 stores, restaurants and local boutiques. It opened in the 1980s and recently underwent renovations including the addition of Dick’s Sporting Goods, World of Beer, Moctezuma’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. The Kitsap Mall is located at 10315 Silverdale Way NW. If you still have spending money, head up to the Trails shopping center at 11999 Pacific Crest Place. You will find a number of discount stores such as Home Goods, Marshall’s, and Old Navy.
Old Town Silverdale
To get a sense of what Silverdale was before the Kitsap Mall came about, visit Old Town Silverdale at Silverdale Way and NW Byron Street. Historic buildings are still in use today and are now home to

microbreweries, spas and shops. Old Town is located directly across from the Silverdale Waterfront Park, one of the more popular in the region due to its family and petfriendly amenities. It includes a large play area and picnic shelters. There are other casual dining cafes in the area including Cash Brewing Company, one of the newest additions to the district, offering classic pubs along with its own craft beer. The Port of Silverdale offers rental kayaks and sailboats. Near the gazebo is a memorial to the military and veterans. From April to October, you’ll find a farmers market in the parking lot of Waterfront Park where fresh vegetables, flowers and homemade goods are offered.
Clear Creek Trail
For outdoor enthusiasts, take a hike along the Clear Creek Trail. Enjoy the quiet and natural space right in the middle of a busy city. On the trail, you’ll get a view of Dyes Inlet where the Mosquito Fleet once ferried
passengers and goods. Other features of the area include ponds, forests, wetlands and more. Salmon, eagles and blue herons can be seen along
34 | DISCOVER KITSAP 2019 the trails so keep an eye out. Parking and entrance is off of Bucklin Hill Road at Myhre Road. A cabin is at the main entrance that houses artifacts from the area.
All Star Arcade Bowling and Casino
This is a great indoor activity located in Silverdale at 10710 Silverdale Way. There’s 40 lanes for bowling, a large arcade, and a casino for those who are of age. One of the featured events here is Rock n’ Bowl on Friday and Saturday evenings which includes rock music and strobe lights in the bowling area. It also includes a grill where hamburgers and fries are served along with numerous breakfast items. Ozzie’s Place bar and bistro is also located here and includes live music on the weekend.
Central Kitsap Community Campus
Located at Silverdale Way and Bucklin Hill Road is the YMCA and future plans for a retail center and apartment living for seniors. The YMCA is a full-service gym with a pool and offers guest passes. There are also areas available outside to run, jog, or walk. If you are someone more interested in golfing, check out the NW Golf Range, which is considered the county’s ultimate entertainment complex. Amenities include a two-story driving range that has 50 stalls, six of which are heated. There is also a 18-hole mini-golf course with a large waterfall running throughout to incorporate a northwest logging theme. You can also find batting cages here and a golf pro shop with golf clubs.
Island Lake County Park
Located between Poulsbo and Silverdale is a cozy and quiet lake with great park activities including swimming, fishing, walking trails, picnic areas and shelter, and a playground. Fishing is allowed on the lake by canoe, kayak or non-motorized boats.
The community building is an ideal facility for weddings, private parties, ceremonies, family reunions and meetings among other things. Seating can accommodate up to 100 people with tables and chairs provided.
U.S. Naval Undersea Museum
Located at Naval Undersea Warfare Center-Keyport is the only official Naval museum that interprets all of the Navy’s undersea activities. The country’s most comprehensive collection of U.S. Navy artifacts, documents and reference material related to undersea subjects are located here. Several of these significant artifacts are on display in the museum’s 18,000 square foot exhibition hall. The Naval Undersea Museum is one of ten museums operated by the U.S. Navy under the direction of the Naval History and Heritage Command.
Seabeck
This historic mill community is located just west of Silverdale and is an excellent tourist attraction for those looking for peace, quiet and the most stunning views of the Olympic Mountains in Kitsap County. Seabeck offers scenic drives and has the basic features of a rural town including the historic Seabeck General Store, a public pier, boat launch and lots of space to enjoy the beach and perhaps launch a kayak. Seabeck is also known for its cycling routes and overnight camping at Scenic Beach State Park. The Seabeck Community Center

Whaling Days Festival
This festival has been held annually since its inception in 1974, celebrating the founding of Silverdale. This year the dates are set for July 26th-28th. Whaling Days is a family-fun, nonprofit and volunteer led community festival located in “Old Town” Silverdale. The event also gives back to the local community using funds to support other nonprofit organizations. There are plenty of things to do and see at Whaling Days including riding the fair rides, watching the parade, taking part in the fun run, enjoying live music and participating in the famous Silverdale Rotary Duck Race on the last day of the event. Green Mountain Wildcat Trail
Just west of downtown Bremerton and south of Seabeck is the mighty Wildcat Trailhead of Green Mountain. Suited for hikers, this 9.5 mile round-trip trail has a steep and rocky ascent to the peak. On the way up, enjoy views of the Hood Canal, the Olympic Mountains and sometimes Seattle. The trail is open to motorized vehicles since it is an open forest where logging activity occurs on occasion. The water here has encouraged rampant growth, hence the name “Green” mountain. As you climb further up, there is a horse camp with cabins where campsites are available. Once you arrive at the top of the mountain, there are picnic tables to enjoy lunch and take in the views from up high. A hurricane fence is located at the top protecting hikers from the steep drop-off below.

U.S.S. Turner Joy
Along the Bremerton Marina waterfront you’ll find the USS Turner Joy, a Forrest Shermanclass destroyer that served from 1958-1982. It was the first ship in action during the Vietnam War and was involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Now, the ship serves as a historical museum where visitors can tour the vessel and even stay aboard overnight during special events. Open hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to February and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from March to October. The ship is closed on major holidays such as Christmas,Thanksgiving, Easter and New Years Day.
Illahee Preserve Heritage Park
This park covers 545 acres of preserved land and approximately five miles of trails in the active use area and is a phenomenal place to hike and explore. Wildlife includes over 55 species of bird, a fish-bearing stream with

coho, chum, cutthroat and steelhead salmon, and a self-contained undeveloped watershed draining into Puget Sound. Future goals for the preserve include the establishment of interpretive walking trails, restoration of a salmon stream to near historic conditions, creation of a regional trail system and the creation of an interpretive center. Come spend a day at this wonderful place and get lost in your surroundings!
Puget Sound Navy Museum
If you happen to be downtown, check out the Puget Sound Navy Museum, which details the history of naval heritage in the Pacific Northwest. Many exhibits explore the history of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, including a section dedicated to the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. Make sure to check out the sail of the Sturgeon class USS Parche, a decommissioned nuclear submarine that is said to be “the most highly decorated vessel in U.S. history.” The museum also offers a gift
shop, research library and a children’s area.
Manette
Manette is an adorable neighborhood across from the Manette Bridge from downtown Bremerton. It is a compact business district with an art and photography scene, and many bars and restaurants, like the Boat Shed, to accompany the spectacular water views. Manette Fest is annually held on the first Saturday of September and there is a bike parade for the youth that is said to be the shortest parade on earth.
Bug & Reptile Museum
Located near Navy Yard City is this fun and interactive experience for kids or anyone interested in bugs and reptiles. You can watch them on display, look at them through a microscope, look through glasses that make you see like a bug and even watch the busy ants in a giant eight-foot-long ant farm. Come

Lions Park
This beautiful park sits on the Dyes Inlet near the Manette Bridge and displays stunning views of the Olympic Mountains on a clear day. The park features about 17 acres with a looped path that nears one mile. A boat ramp is available along with numerous trails and pathways to discover. Tables and benches are also present for when you need to take a break from walking and enjoy the scenery around you. Sport facilities are included such as a lighted softball field, a basketball court and tennis courts. Come and see all that Lions Park has to offer.
Kitsap County Fairgrounds
This plaza of sorts offers all kinds of shows and events year round such as antiques, art, quilts, rocks and gems, and guns. The Eagle’s Nest and the Kitsap Sun Pavilion Conference Room are available for rent for various parties and meetings. The signature event held at the Fairgrounds is the annual Kitsap County Fair, set to be held Aug. 21-25. The fair includes a rodeo, carnival rides, food, animals, vendors and an exhibition hall of various items to see. During the occasional weekend in the summer, the Kitsap Destruction Derby takes place for all kinds of races and cars. Soccer, baseball and softball fields are also featured for club teams and youth sports. Also make sure to visit the historic log cabin to see how life was in years past.
Kitsap County Historical Museum
Another go-to venue on the Bremerton waterfront is the Kitsap County Historical Museum at 280 Fourth St where you can learn all about Kitsap County history. The museum resides in the former office of Seattle First National Bank and is operated by the Kitsap County Historical Society, an organization that collects, preserves and exhibits the diverse culture, history and heritage of Kitsap County. Featured exhibits include storefronts and classrooms from the early 1900s, a saloon and hands-on exhibits for children. The Valentinetti Puppet Museum is also located there to celebrate the art of puppetry through creative, historical and cultural experiences
for all ages. There are areas for kids to play with puppets and where actual puppet shows are performed. Both are open and free to the public on the First Friday Art Walk downtown, which is held on the first Friday of each month. Youth and adult tours are available.
Olympic College
This two-year public college is at 1600 Chester Ave., where more than 15,000 students attend classes each year. Olympic College offers transfer options to state universities. The 33-acre campus opened in 1946 and offers four-year degrees in nursing, mechanical engineering, business, internet technology and filmmaking, among others. Through partnerships with local universities such as Washington State University and Western Washington University, students can complete an associate degree with Olympic College, then transfer into a partner program to earn a bachelor’s degree without having to leave Kitsap County.
Admiral Theatre
Bremerton’s Admiral Theatre is located downtown at 515 Pacific Ave. and provides world-class live entertainment in an intimate 1942 art deco movie house. The theater offers
various concerts, often with Grammy awardwinning and multi-platinum selling artists, new breakthrough artists, family shows, dance, comedy, film, tribute acts and youth arts and education. Bremerton is the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula and is known for its great art community, a U.S. Navy base and a scenic waterfront where visitors can catch a ferry over to Seattle. Founding father William Bremer came to the Port Orchard Bay region in 1888 as a real estate businessman and had a vision for a thriving city. Originally called Port Orchard and then Charleston, Bremer founded Bremerton due to his efforts of making the present-day naval shipyard a real possibility. The city was incorporated in 1901 with A.L. Croxton becoming the first mayor. Surrounding communities include Manette, Illahee and East Bremerton.

MANCHESTER STATE PARK
This lovely, serene 111-acre camping park offers visitors a retreat from busy urban life with 3,400 feet of saltwater shoreline on Rich Passage. For those who wish to amp up their visit, though, there’s plenty of offerings, including hiking, fishing, horseshoes and volleyball.

The historic MV Carlisle II vessel takes visitors on a half-hour leisurely trip across Sinclair Inlet from Port Orchard’s ferry dock to Bremerton, where they can take in lots of shopping and sightseeing in this naval community.
PORT ORCHARD FARMERS MARKET On summer Saturdays, one of Western Washington’s oldest and largest vegetable, fruit and crafts markets takes over the city’s waterfront parking lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning April through mid-October. It’s a place where vendors offer locally grown produce and handmade crafts to visitors with a smile.
BANNER FOREST HERITAGE PARK

Taking advantage of Port Orchard’s unique marine vista, the city is in the midst of creating a recreation and entertainment mecca for residents and visitors on the water side of Bay Street. The action takes place at the Port of Bremerton’s Marina Park, which offers a children’s playground, the Soroptimist International Overlook covered area and the Rockwell Pocket Park, soon to open to visitors.
SOUTH KITSAP REGIONAL PARK of walking and equestrian trails leading to a scenic open area. The park also shares information about this wildlife habitat on the Kitsap Peninsula, which offers occasional bear sightings!
HOWE FARM AND DOG PARK
An 83-acre park was recently upgraded to provide visitors with plenty of walking trails for the humans and two off-leash dog areas — one for the big guys, another for the little squirts. Howe Farm is on Long Lake Road between Mile Hill Drive and Sedgwick Road.
PORT ORCHARD WATERFRONT AND CHILDREN’S PARK
This large county park is a popular recreational mecca for South Kitsap residents. It has an array of baseball fields, a new nature trail with interactive stopping points and a miniature railroad operated by the Kitsap Live Steamers, a nonprofit group of railroad enthusiasts. Rides are offered on a donation basis from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the
second and fourth Saturdays of each month through October, weather permitting.
MCCORMICK VILLAGE PARK
The City of Port Orchard’s newest park opened to the public early in 2019 to rave reviews with its beautiful expanse of green space and trails for humans and their dogs. The 65-acre park off Old Clifton Road also includes a splash pad water play feature sure to be popular during the warm summer months.

SOUTH KITSAP discover more PORT ORCHARD While Port Orchard is known primarily as Kitsap County’s seat of government, it offers so much more to those living on the Kitsap Peninsula and visiting from outside the region. This community of about 14,000 residents is a maritime gateway for visitors who come from Seattle from the east, Tacoma from the south and Bremerton from the west. The Washington State Ferries provides sailings from West Seattle’s Fauntleroy ferry terminal to South Kitsap’s Southworth dock. Heading up SR 16, drivers from South Puget Sound have easy access to Port Orchard, especially convenient these days with the completion of the multi-million-dollar community gateway Tremont Street widening project that leads to the downtown area. And for those leaving or arriving from the Bremerton side of Sinclair Inlet, there’s the quick 15-minute passenger-only foot ferry that departs from the Port Orchard waterfront terminal.
Port Orchard will become even more convenient in which to visit and live with the introduction in 2020 of a fast-ferry route leaving from nearby Southworth to downtown Seattle. Kitsap County’s government seat has for some time managed to elude the growth of urban Seattle to the east and the encroachment of bustling Pierce County to the south. But because of the white-hot economic growth in the region, South Kitsap and Port Orchard has been impacted with signs of similar vibrant activity. New housing has started to sprout in formerly rural stretches of South Kitsap as young homebuyers seek affordable housing unavailable elsewhere in the region. The once-slumbering downtown Port Orchard and its Bay Street shopping area also is at the cusp of a significant revitalization. Developers have created plans to build a new community events center across the street from City Hall that will include a scenic pedestrian harborfront walkway to the waterfront. Also in
their scope are plans for major multiuse commercial and residential development downtown that will add thousands of square feet of rental properties, and office, commercial and retail space to the city. The Bay Street Pedestrian Pathway project is being completed in phases, highlighted by a scenic bridge crossing Blackjack Creek near the waterfront’s edge. Soon, walkers and bicyclists will have a paved path between the Annapolis ferry dock to the north and the south end of SR 166, also known as Bay Street. Adding a recreational component to the downtown mix is completion of the

Port Orchard’s newest park — McCormick Village Park — just opened to residents and visitors in March 2019. It’s a delightful addition to the city’s park system with walking trails, dog parks and children’s play areas, as well as a wide swath of green. Most noteworthy, especially for children, is a new splash pad water feature sure to come in handy during warm summer months. While Port Orchard is changing with the times, what remains the same are the hometown folks, many who have lived in the area for generations. It’s a place known for rolling vistas, scenic homesite views and the Olalla Americana Festival, formerly known as the Bluegrass and Beyond Festival. 56 | DISCOVER KITSAP 2019 This 88-acre camping park has 1,500 feet of saltwater beachfront and is known for its wild, native rhododendrons. On a clear day, enjoy the stunning views of the Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains. Trail paths lead visitors to a country garden, gazebo, rustic bridge and huge trees. Keep your eyes and ears perked for the diverse birds and wildlife that call this area home. Also, enjoy the rocky beach where oysters can be harvested in-season. There are 52 tent spaces and 18 pull-through campsites for RV’s up to 60 feet.
Lions Park, Bremerton
This community park sits on Anderson Cove and offers 1,900 feet of shoreline and picturesque mountain views. Take a walk around the .7 mile loop path and also check out the playground, shelter and picnic tables. Plenty of parking is available. A tennis court, basketball court and lighted softball fields are provided for sports activities.
CHILL ON THE BEACH Point No Point Lighthouse and Park
Featuring a historic lighthouse that overlooks a sprawling sandy beach and sweeping views of the Puget Sound. Sit by on a sunny day and watch the freighters drift on by. Salmon fishing is good at the point as well, but be sure to get there early as space can become quite competitive at the height of Chinook salmon season. Birdwatching is good, too, with nearby wetlands, those armed with binoculars can spot a healthy mix of seabirds and other species. Ample parking and weekend lighthouse tours make this beach a no-brainer for any hot summer day.
Salsbury Point Park
A commanding view of the Hood Canal Bridge and top-tier boat ramp are the most notable features of this beach and park. Sheltered picnic area, BBQ and a wide lawn also offer visitors a prime location to catch some rays as well.
Eglon Beach Park
Between Kingston and Hansville, this small beach is a bit out of the way, but because of this fact, can almost guarantee you won’t be fighting the crowds for a parking space. Covered picnic shelter and boat launch (which is often sandy, so beware) also make it an excellent spot to enjoy some lunch before an afternoon fishing.
Foulweather Bluff Preserve
At low tide, this beach near Hansville offers a seemingly endless stretch of sand upon which to stroll, looking for sea critters and enjoying the views. Wide open spaces make the spot a top pick for families with children. A short woodland
hike leads through a bird marsh and 3,800 feet of beach. No restroom facilities at this location though and all trash must be packed out by any visitors, no pets allowed and no removal of driftwood or shells from the beach.
Kitsap Memorial State Park
With a nearby park situated beside a cliff overlooking the Hood Canal, this beach offers visitors the opportunity to have the best of both worlds: an elevated view and a grassy area to lay down a picnic. The cabins at the park are also able to be rented for anyone hoping to extend their beach visit into a multiple-day endeavor.
Anderson Point County Park, Olalla
This 66-acre park has nearly 2,000 feet of picturesque saltwater shoreline and is a great family destination. Views include Colvos Passage, Vashon Island and Mount Baker on a clear day. Keep a keen eye out for orca whales, harbor seals and eagles.
Silverdale Waterfront Park
This park is near the heart of downtown Silverdale and offers some wonderful attractions and amenities. The waterfront park has a gazebo, a large playground for kids, sandy beaches and waterfront trail access. Picnic tables are also accessible and local shops and cafes are right across the street. The Port of Silverdale provides a public boat ramp, trailer parking, guest moorage, showers and restrooms. Not to mention the spectacular views across the water.

A park couldn’t be named more perfectly!
Guillemot Cove Nature Reserve, Seabeck
Try to keep your feet dry while exploring a series of trails amid the historic 184-acre secluded cove. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Olympic Mountains and take the trail that leads to an old Stump House made from a gigantic hollowed out cedar stump.
Arness Roadside Park
This sweet little roadside park is located at the head of Apple Tree Cove on South Kingston Road and offers a gorgeous panorama of the Port of Kingston, Edmonds Ferry and the Cascades beyond. There isn’t much room to take a walk or a hike but it’s a great place to hold a picnic and launch a kayak.
FAY BAINBRIDGE PARK, BAINBRIDGE ISLAND
A 17-acre marine camping park with 1,420 feet of saltwater shoreline on the northeast corner of Bainbridge Island. The park has sweeping views of Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains and, on clear days, Mount Rainier and Mount Baker. The campground has 14 tent sites ($20 per night) with a central water location and a portable toilet. There are 26 RV sites with water/electricity ($40 per night), plus three cabins ($95 per night peak season and $65 per night off season). The park also has two restroom facilities, one with showers.
ANDERSON POINT COUNTY PARK, OLALLA
This 66-acre park gives you a chance to get away from it all. It offers one of the best beach walks on the Kitsap Peninsula, with view of Colvos Passage and Vashon Island.
PORT ORCHARD MARINA PARK
There’s plenty to do here for adults and children alike. There is a children’s playground, beach access, a pocket park, pedestrian pathway along the waterfront, and views of Bremerton and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. On Saturdays during the summer, the Port Orchard Farmers Market sets up shop in the adjacent parking lot.

Kids’ Activities There’s plenty for the little ones to do in Kitsap. Indoors or outdoors, athletic, creative or scientific, there are a number of options for physical or mental exercise. If the kids love to skate or want to try, you can head over to the Bremerton Ice Center and its indoor skating rink at 1950 Homer Jones Road, Bremerton. Ice skating a little too cold for you? Head to the roller rink at Bremerton’s Skateland at 1740 NE Fuson Road, Bremerton. Beat the summer heat or keep out of the cold by staying inside at Ahoy Kitsap, a pirate/seathemed popular spot for kids to have fun or relax. Open daily except for major holidays. Head over to downtown Bremerton to Aurora Valentinetti Puppet Museum to check out a huge collection of puppets, hats and other props. There is a play area for children with puppets, books and musical instruments, plus two theaters for putting on a show. The museum hosts tours for under $5 per person. A “Day of the Dead” puppets exhibit is on displayed through November 2019. Located at 280 Fourth St., Bremerton. Check out a collection of critters and creatures at the Bug & Reptile Museum. See and learn about various bugs and reptiles from around the globe, and get up close and personal with them. See

The museum is designed to encourage and develop sensory exploration in a fun environment, with weekly events such as Messy Mondays, Tuesday Tunes singalongs and Discovery Fridays. Kitsap Memorial State Park
This 62-acre camping park has nearly 2,000
This multipurpose recreational park includes 209 wooded acres. Features include three athletic fields, batting cages, hiking trails, a skate park, walking trails and a miniature railroad that travels through the park. The athletic trails and the park picnic shelter are available to rent for events.
Evergreen Rotary Park
This park is just over 10 acres and includes the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial that has a metal tower made from portions of the World Trade Center. The community park also hosts the Bremerton Farmers Market every Thursday during the months of April to October. Amenities include a playground, shelter, tables and benches, trails and pathways, basketball
courts, water access, boat ramp and 75 parking spaces.
Fish Park, Poulsbo
This 20.73-acre park is located just off of Bond Road near downtown Poulsbo and features a lake, nature hiking trails, boardwalk, winding paths, lawn and sitting areas, arboretum, wildlife and bird viewing, viewing platforms, pedestrian bridges, interpretive signage, kiosk and parking. The trails that are available are dog-friendly. A few small ponds like the Liberty Bay Estuary and Dogfish Creek can be accessed through the boardwalk and make sure to stop by the huge salmon sculpture constructed out of driftwood by local artist Travis Foreman.
Central Park, Port Orchard
This small 1.4-acre park is well suited for toddlers and their families. Amenities include three picnic tables, playground equipment, a sports field, a basketball court, restrooms and an additional covered picnic area.
Mike Wallace Park, Kingston
Just a short walk from the Port of Kingston and downtown shops is this one-acre park. Public events are held here on a regular

This locally operated public recreation area comprises 17 acres and is located south of the Point Monroe sandspit on the northeast tip of Bainbridge Island. Panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains are present and on clear days Mount Rainier and Mount Baker are visible. Sandy beaches are featured along with a campground with 15 tent sites at $15 per night. A central water location and a portable toilet are provided at the campsite. Cabins are also available for

BLAKELY HARBOR PARK, Bainbridge Island
In the 1880s, Port Blakely was home to one of the world’s largest sawmills until it burned down in 1907. It was later rebuilt in the 1920s, only to burn down again. The harbor was once the most industrial in Puget Sound. Today, it is a natural amusement park for picnicking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing that spans 40 acres. Visitors can hop along a driftwood trail down to the former Blakely generator building which is home to an ever-evolving graffiti art collection. Just past the concrete artifact is a roughly 90-year-old watergate used in the sawmill era to hold water and logs at the head of the bay.

Shrimping Season begins in May. There is a daily limit of 80 shrimp and shrimp heads may removed while in the field, prior to coming ahsore. The minimum mesh size for shrimp pots is one inch. From dates June 1 through Oct. 15, the daily limit is 10 pounds. Crab Season opens in the summer of 2019 and includes Dungeness crab, Red Rock Crab and Tanner Crab, all fishing methods. For Dungeness crab, the limits are 6.25 inches, five males and you must retain black shell while in the field. You must release all soft shell, females and undersized crab. A catch record card is required.

CAMPING Kitsap Memorial State Park

Five miles of saltwater beach await those who can make it out to this park, commanding views of the Olympic Mountains and Seattle skyline are the rewards for those who make the voyage.

CYCLING Green Mountain
lies west of Bremerton proper and is the second highest summit in Kitsap behind Gold Mountain. It features sweeping views of Seattle, the Olympic Mountains and the Cascades on sunny days. There are plenty of tough trails for seasoned riders, including the Wildcat Trail, which is a 4.5 mile section to the top of Green Mountain. A shorter, less-traveled trail, known as Gold Creek, is a 2.5-mile ride to the summit.
Swimming
BAINBRIDGE AQUATIC CENTER 8521 Madison Ave. N., Bainbridge Island, features two pools, both housed at the aquatic center. The Ray Williamson Pool is a six-lane 25-yard pool and was built in 1970 as an outdoor pool. The Don Nakata Memorial Pool, built in 2001, is a 360,000-gallon pool that includes a 180-foot water slide, lazy river, sloped beach entry, tot pool, water features, toddler frog slide, 1- and 3-meter diving boards and four 25-yard lap lanes.
Illahee Preserve in Bremerton is perfect for a quick trip through the forest. It’s a 570-acre park with about five miles of trails. Get started at the parking lot near Almira Drive.
The Port Gamble Forest has 60 miles of
trails and is a local favorite for mountain biking as well as horseback riding and hiking. Check out the Forbidden Forest Loop Trail, an 8.5-mile path that takes you through diverse groups of trees.
Banner Forest Heritage Park in Port
Orchard is 636 acres and has a network of trails that combine for a 20-mile journey. There’s a bit of everything here except for very large hills.
Newberry Hill Heritage Park is next to
Klahowya Secondary School, west of Silverdale proper and east of Seabeck. There are approximately 13 miles of trails and plenty of access points.
The North Kitsap Peninsula Bike Loop is a 40-mile road route that begins and ends at North Kitsap High School. The ride takes you through Indianola, Kingston, Hansville, Port Gamble and back through the Striebels Corner area before returning to Poulsbo. Indianola Loop is a 14-mile ride with rolling hills near the Port Madison Reservation.
Hansville Loop is a 15-mile route that runs through Little Boston and the Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation.

Kayaking The Kitsap Peninsula National Water Trail
has 371 miles of shoreline and plenty of access points all over the Kitsap Peninsula and trails ranging from beginner to expert. Explore the bays, inlets and canals west of Seattle with plenty of chances to encounter unique and interesting wildlife. There are also a number of islands, especially on the south end of the peninsula, some of which can only be accessed by watercraft.
Scuba Diving
Hood Canal is a beautiful ride that takes about five days to complete, but there are many destinations along the way, including the nearby towns of Belfair, Seabeck, Hoodsport, Brinnon and Union. There are also a number of campsites and parks located along the canal, including Scenic Beach State Park in Seabeck. Silverdale WaTerfront Park offers
plenty of places to launch into Dyes Inlet and casual paddlers can even rent a kayak in the summer months for a short trip around the inlet.
There are plenty of dive sites through Kitsap. Blakely Harbor, Point White Pier and Rockaway beach on Bainbridge Island; Scenic Beach State Park in Seabeck; and Harper Pier in Port Orchard. You can also dive near Manchester, Illahee Dock, Port Washington, Fort Ward, various points along the Hood Canal and Kitsap Memorial State Park.

Green Mountain: Just to the south of Seabeck
and to the west of Bremerton, Green Mountain provides 13 miles of trails for hiking and other recreational activities.
Ilahee Preserve 3540 NE Sylvan Way. A winding
labyrinth of walking trails weave through this 380acre nature preserve. This spot is an absolute must-see for any nature enthusiasts seeking to get out and stretch their legs. Nine looping trails run along wetlands and near the Rolling Hills Golf Course.
Newberry Hill Heritage Park 7607 NW Newberry Hill Road, Silverdale. The result of approximately 1,200 acres of public land, acquired in 2009, this park offers Kiosks, maps, helpful guides and trail markers to assist those who are new to the area in navigating the park. Constantly evolving, work is being done continuously, keeping things exciting for repeat visitors.

Bainbridge
Cut Off Road NE, Kingston. More than 4 miles of trails cut through the 443 acres of land that constitutes Kingston’s North Kitsap Heritage Park. Seven trails offer visitors access to forest which runs directly up to the White Horse Golf Club, Indianola and Kingston. Trails are clearly marked and easily navigated with a map of the trails available online at Kitsapgov.com/parks. Trailheads can be found along Miller Bay Road, Norman Road and Indianola Road.
FAY BAINBRIDGE PARK: 15446 Sunrise Drive NE, Bainbridge Island. This 17-acre park on the water is Bainbridge’s premiere camping park, with three cabins, 14 tent sites and 26 RV sites. Along with 1,420 feet of waterfront, the park offers volleyball courts, a playground, and sheltered and unsheltered picnic tables. Reservations accepted year round.

Rd. NW, Seabeck. Seabeck’s 184-acre nature reserve is a favorite among those who appreciate the outdoors for its eight trails of varying lengths that cross through the reserve. The main access trail is about a mile long and includes a big leaf maple tree forest and carries hikers over the Old Sawmill Plateau. Seven other trails and beach access also await visitors to the Guillemot Cove Nature Reserve.

A 68-acre nature area with trail loops and three scenic viewing areas can be found at Anderson Landing. Trailheads can be found on NW Anderson Hill Road and Warren Road NW.
Clear Creek Bike and Pedestrian Trail 9641 Levin Rd. Silverdale. At 1.4 miles long, this trail provides a 10-foot wide path which is paved. The path connects to the Clear Creek Trail for anyone seeking to lengthen their trip. The Clear Creek Trail also provides five miles of dirt trails which wind through the area between Silverdale Way and Trigger Avenue.

BATTLE POINT PARK 11299 Arrowpoint Drive, of the 14 main trail systems in Bainbridge, Battle Point is one of the most popular offering roughly 3.5 miles of trails that allow bikes. The park is surrounded by 1.5 miles of equestrian terrain. GRAND FOREST 9752 Miller Road NE, has three
sections; the Grand Forest West Trail System is the most popular trail system on Bainbridge Island and consists 2.95 miles of forested trails meandering along hillsides, wetlands, and streams; the Grand Forest East Trail System consists of 2.9 miles of forested trails that connect to the Grand Forest West Trail System via the Hilltop Trail; the Grand Forest North Trail System consists of a 0.8 mile loop. Trails are relatively flat with few inclines and a trail surface of dirt, mulch and gravel.

WE ALL HAVE A STORY TO TELL Officially formed Jan. 16, 1857, Kitsap County has a long and storied history. For starters, Kitsap County used to be called Slaughter County, in honor of Lt. William Alloway Slaughter, who had been killed in 1855 in the Yakima War. But the name Slaughter County lasted only seven months — in the first election, on July 13, 1857, voters had the opportunity to rename the county to Kitsap, named for Chief Kitsap of the Suquamish Tribe. Now, residents and visitors to the Kitsap Peninsula have plenty of chances to learn about the ensuing 160 years in museums throughout the county, as well as the history of individual communities and the naval presence in Kitsap County. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Memorial Plaza
250 1st St., Bremerton. This is a 2.2-acre park in busy downtown Bremerton, near the ferry dock and the Naval Museum. It’s a place for a relaxing walk in the middle of a bustling city while learning about the various contributions the local shipyard has made to both the city and the nation. There are a number of statues, informative plaques and seating areas for the public as well as a few fountains to cool off on a warm day.
U.S. Navy
Since 1892, the U.S. Navy has been a prominent presence on the Kitsap Peninsula. The large bays and channels provide a strategic location and serve as great assets for the Navy. The
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is the Pacific Northwest’s largest naval shore facility and one of Washington state’s largest industrial installations. Naval Base Kitsap was created in 2004 and merges the former Naval Station Bremerton and Naval Submarine Base Bangor. The mission of Naval Base Kitsap is to serve as the home base for the Navy’s fleet throughout western Puget Sound and to provide base operating services, including support for both surface ships and fleet ballistic missiles and other nuclear submarines having their home ports at Bremerton and Bangor.
Puget Sound Navy Museum

This museum has collected, preserved and interpreted the naval heritage of the Pacific Northwest, documenting life on the sea, pivotal moments for the Navy in Puget Sound and the history of the Naval Shipyard. Features of the museum include the captain’s steering wheel, a collection of Japanese swords, a sea mine, Russian uniforms and an exhibit about the USS John C. Stennis nuclear-powered supercarrier.
Kitsap County Veterans Memorial
3337 NW Byron on the Silverdale waterfront. The Homebuilders Association of Kitsap County worked with other community organizations to build this park, honoring all who served in any era. It is one of the few memorials to honor all six branches of service, including Merchant Marines.
Silverdale Waterfront Park offers great views and is a perfect location to reflect on what veterans have done for our country. The memorial also honors Henry R. Johnson, a World War I veteran from Silverdale who lost his life in the Muese-Argonne Offensive.
Suquamish Veterans Memorial Park 18490 Suquamish Way NE Suquamish. Set in a natural landscape of native plants, this 9,000-square-foot space reflects the traditional Big House architecture of the Coast Salish and houses the tribe’s collection of artifacts, photographs and manuscripts. Thick wood pillars are displayed on the outside of the museum, one representing Chief Sealth and another representing Chief Kitsap. The public area offers permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, research space, education rooms and a museum store.

6861 NE South Street, Suquamish Located in the historic waterfront community home to Chief Seattle’s Gravesite, the House of Awakened Culture and the Old Man House Park, the Suquamish Museum teaches visitors about the culture of the Suquamish and Coast Salish Tribes. The facility opened in 2012 and features the Ancient Shores - Changing Tides exhibit that envelopes visitors in a forest-like environment. The objects in the museum are on loan from Suquamish families to authentically teach folks about the Suquamish culture. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Kitsap County

Naval Undersea Museum

Focusing on the unique history of undersea warfare and exploration, the Naval Undersea Museum offers visitors a plentiful series of exhibits, artifacts and even the control room from USS Greenling. Learn about torpedoes (built and tested in Keyport), submarines, sea mines, early divers and much more. Outdoor exhibits showcase deep-sea vehicles, sure to interest anyone with a curiosity for Naval history or a thirst for undersea knowledge.
USS Turner Joy
300 Washington Beach Ave. Bremerton. 360792-2457. This Vietnam-era U.S. Navy destroyer was the first permanent and publicly accessible naval heritage and educational ship attraction in the Northwest. The ship can be toured from stem to stern and from boiler to bridge. The Turner Joy is also available for private tours, banquets and youth group overnight stays.
House of Knowledge
31912 Little Boston Rd. NE. Kingston. 360-2972646. The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s House of Knowledge features four integrated buildings with a spectacular collection of Native American carvings and art. The 5,700-square-foot
longhouse is used as a ceremonial space and for weddings and events and can accommodate up to 400 people. All one room, the longhouse features a central performance area, surrounded by seating.
Chief Sealth’s Grave
7076 NE South St. Suquamish. Seattle was named for Suquamish Chief Si âl (Sealth), who became known as Chief Seattle. The chief’s grave site is in the small community of Suquamish and overlooks Puget Sound. Sealth’s grave was also renovated and rededicated on Veterans Day 2010.

Hansville Point No Point Lighthouse

Hansville Holding the honor of the oldest lighthouse on the Puget Sound, the Point No Point lighthouse serves as a beacon in the night to passing ships, warning them of treacherous shoals nearby. The lighthouse has remained in continuous service since 1880 and was manned until 1980, when the system was automated by the US Coast Guard. The lighthouse and museum are open to tours on the weekends.

Bruciato arose from Chef Brendan McGill’s longtime and popular pop-up, and the 2,000 square-foot restaurant features classic Neapolitan pizza as well as modern interpretations. McGill (“People’s Best New Chef” by Food & Wine in 2013) has a storied relationship with Neapolitan pizza: as
the executive chef of Via Tribunali, he traveled to Naples in 2009 and dove deep into the city’s traditions of both pizza and espresso. White Horse originally opened in 2007 and
was rated one of America’s best new courses that year by Golf Digest, thanks to its beautiful natural surroundings and incredibly high degree of difficulty. The course was originally designed by Cynthia Dye McGarey, a famous course designer. The course fell into foreclosure due to the 2008 economic crash (the golf course was one part of a larger development) but was rescued by the Suquamish Tribe — and has flourished since. McCormick Woods is an 18-hole course built in

GETTING THERE How will you travel to your Destination The best way to get to the Kitsap Peninsula is by ferry. Drive or walk onto the Bainbridge Island or Bremerton ferries operated by Washington State Ferries from Colman Dock in Seattle. The Bainbridge-Seattle route is about 35 minutes long and the Bremerton-Seattle run is about 60 minutes. There are also ferries running between Kingston and Edmonds (30 minutes) and Fauntleroy (West Seattle), Vashon Island and Southworth (south of Port Orchard, 40 minutes). Kitsap Transit also offers passenger-only service to Bremerton and Kingston from Seattle.
Highway 3 is the main thoroughfare through
Kitsap County, and it connects Poulsbo to Silverdale and Bremerton. It merges with Route 104, which leads to the Hood Canal Bridge and the Olympic Peninsula at its northern terminus and runs south and west to Shelton in Mason County. Highway 3 also links up with Highway 16 in Gorst, which runs through Pierce County across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Tacoma. Highway 3 also connects to 305, which runs to the Bainbridge Island ferry at Eagle Harbor.
Bus Service
Kitsap Transit has routed bus service serving Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Kingston, Suquamish, Silverdale, Bremerton and Port Orchard. Bus routes are designed to connect with one another as well as the local foot ferries, fast ferries and Washington State Ferries vessels.
To board a bus, have either the exact change in the fare box — bills and coins are accepted — or tap an ORCA card. Make sure to ask the driver for a transfer if you need one. Route No. 1 and 2 serve as a fast-ferry express for those arriving in Bremerton as a carless passenger. Route 1 goes to the North Viking Transfer Station in Poulsbo and Route 2 goes to Ridgetop Boulevard in Silverdale, which can then be taken to the nearby Kitsap Mall. Route No. 90 serves the Bainbridge Island Ferry terminal, bringing passengers to Poulsbo. Route No. 91 serves commuters between the Kingston ferry terminal and the Bainbridge ferry terminal. Hood Canal Floating Bridge is approximately 1.4 miles long and is an important connector to Jefferson County and the Olympic Peninsula. The only other way around is a three-hour drive down Route 3 through Belfair to Shelton, where it intersects with Highway 101, which runs north and south along the western side of the Hood Canal. It is the third-longest floating bridge in the world and the longest one situated on saltwater. The bridge links Kitsap County to the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park. It is a nontoll road, but drivers not familiar with the area should check the bridge’s status ahead of time since it does open for marine traffic, which can cause delays.
Carlisle II was in operation back in the days of
the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2017. It’s one of remaining surviving vessels of a fleet of boats that Carlisle II is now a floating museum with black and white photos in the interior. The vessel was built in Bellingham in 1917 and originally operated there, running between the city and Lummi Island. It was then bought and used to make the short trip across Sinclair Inlet between Port Orchard and Bremerton, where the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard grew its operation during World War II. This was an important route because the drive around the inlet between the two cities took double the time. Carlisle II is now owned and operated by Kitsap Transit and still makes the Port Orchard-Bremerton run as a foot ferry, often used by commuters. Crossing time takes approximately 12 minutes. There is also a foot ferry to Bremerton from Annapolis, which takes about five minutes.

TRIPS ON A TANK NAVIGATING THE PENINSULA ON A SINGLE TANK OF GAS One of the wonderful things about the Kitsap Peninsula, is just how close you are to everything once you’re here. Of course the year-round residents have already learned just how far one tank of gas can get them, those visiting Kitsap should keep the following in mind: you are never far from adventure. One tank of gas, that’s all it takes to get to the following places, all selected for their proximity to Kitsap and the fact that getting there will be a little easier on your wallet than a long road trip.
Port Townsend: Founded in 1851 Port Townsend is home to numerous historic sites and a charming city center to boot. Perhaps most noticable, Port Townsend features numerous Victorian buildings from the late 19th Century. Many events are hosted in Port Townsend, not the least of which is the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, held in September. Fort Worden offers a nice mix of natural beauty and historic interest, given its crucial role in providing seaside defense. Dungeness County Park, Dungeness Wildlife Refuge: The Dungeness County Park in Sequim features two camping loops for folks who want to brew up their morning coffee in front of what is undoubtedly one of the most commanding
views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca the area has to offer. Try to shoot for the northwestern-facing campsites, if you can, for the best views. The key feature of the park, aside from its vantage from the bluff, is its walking trail, which leads directly to the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge. Open from 7 a.m. to 30 minutes before sunset, just $3 gets visitors the opportunity to hike the 5 miles down the spit to the New Dungeness Lighthouse. The trip is an easy one for ablebodied folks, just so long as you catch a 6-foot tide or lower. Any higher than 6 feet and hikers can be pushed up onto the driftwood and rocks, making the trip considerably longer and more difficult but not impossible. After hiking the spit, there’s a good chance you’ll have worked up quite an appetite, and for that, Blondie’s Plate in Sequim is going to be your next go-to spot. Located in a former Episcopalian church on 2nd Avenue, Blondie’s Plate is a hard one to miss and features fresh, local seafood and other contemporary Northwest cuisine sure to please even the most pretentious of wannabe gourmands. This spot is going to be a bit higherend than your average roadside greasy spoon, but you better believe, it’s well worth it if you’re
into seafood. Hitting Blondie’s during their happy hour between 4 and 5 p.m. will also get you $3 off certain menu items, good for folks looking to sample a couple of items.
Hobuck Beach: Hobuck Beach, located near Neah Bay in Washington’s northwestern-most tip, you will find Hobuck Beach, a haven for surfers, campers and beach aficionados. The drive along the Strait of Juan De Fuca Highway (SR-112) near the coast makes for an interesting trip, with plenty to see along the way. Shortly after the

Certain sections of SR-112 can be extremely rough and pose serious hazards to motorcyclists and larger vehicles towing trailers. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for signs identifying bumps on the roadway, as these are not your average quarter-inch grading differentials that you might find after the county does a little roadwork. Between Twin Beach and the community of Pysht, travelers can take in a clear, hilltop view toward the mouths of Joe Creek and Jim Creek. Farther in the distance, the Pillar Point Recreation Area is also visible. There are a number of locations conveniently placed along the Strait of Juan De Fuca Highway where folks can pull over and take in the views of the strait and Vancouver Island. After arriving in Neah Bay, your GPS may tell you that the best way to get over to Hobuck Beach

the case. The Makah Passage is an unpaved, rutty, bone shaker which will almost certainly wake any passengers lulled to sleep by the winding coastal roads. Instead, visitors should take Cape Flattery Road until it reaches Hobuck Road, thereby foregoing about 20 minutes of traveling speeds of 10 mph or less.
Hobuck Beach Resort is a
good place to camp near the beach. One night’s stay is $25 in a general camping area, which is basically an open field where campers are allowed to set up wherever they can fit. Because Hobuck Beach Resort is located within the Makah Reservation, visitors are required to purchase a $10 recreational use permit from the tribe. Alcohol and marijuana are expressly forbidden from the reservation as well, with violators subject to citation and prosecution.
shore break, making it a popular spot for surfers to catch a wave. The beach also provides a cool breeze for those who aren’t looking to don a wetsuit, and the fine coastal sand makes for good barefoot walking. Remember to keep an eye out for the patches of dried kelp scattered across the beach since they can dry into hard, pokey masses. Hobuck Beach is a wonderful trip for anyone hoping to experience the rugged, raw, beauty of Washington’s coast without straying too far from civilization. Remember, when you’re in Kitsap, you’re only one tank of gas away from adventure.
Olympic National Park: With a labyrinth of sprawling trails for any skill level, backpacking in the Olympic National Park is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys communing with nature. Picturesque vistas and alpine lakes abound in the Olympic National Park, if you’re feeling lucky you can also bring along a rod and reel to try your hand at catching a lake trout. Be sure to check with the local ranger station to ensure that you adhere to local fishing regulations. Regardless of your skill level, the Olympic National Park has something for you so do yourself a favor and get out there and get on the trail.

WHIDBEY ISLAND
Whidbey Island has a little bit of everything for
everybody. Just a short ferry ride from Port Townsend, Whidbey has a plethora of choices for the most particular of travelers. Located in Jefferson County, it has a beautiful natural setting with hiking trails, camping, shopping and lots of history to discover. And it’s easy to make your trip to Whidbey Island a weekend adventure. There are lots of hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts to stay at overnight. The island forms the northern boundary of Puget Sound and is home to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The economy of the area south of Oak Harbor depends on tourism, small-scale agriculture and the arts. Langley and Freeland both have a number of art galleries and antique stores. Whidbey is often referred to as Puget Sound’s largest artists colony, and it’s no wonder why. It’s home to many working artists, writers and performers. On the historical front: Whidbey Island contains Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, the first national historic reserve in the U.S. It was created by the National Park Service to preserve the rural history and
culture of the island and to protect the area’s rare and sensitive native plants.
Washington State Parks located on the island include Deception Pass State Park, Joseph Whidbey State Park, Fort Ebey State Park, Fort Casey State Park and South Whidbey Island State Park. There’s also a series of countyoperated parks throughout the island. Sites not to be missed on the island include the Greenbank Farm, located at the mid-point of the island. There also are several artists shops and a local wine-tasting room, along with gardens to view. A small cafe offers in-season specials that are great for a lunchtime picnic nearby. Whidbey Island hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Among the most popular is the Whidbey Island Fair on July 18-21. It includes rides, food and 4-H animal shows. Another great event is Whidbey Island Race Week, a week-long sailing regatta every summer based out of Oak Harbor, with daily racing in Penn Cove and/or Saratoga Passage. Usually on the third week of July, it
can vary slightly due to tidal conditions. Check with the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce for information.
Orcas
Make use of the waters surrounding Whidbey Island. There are a number of whale-watching tours, including Deception Pass Tours at www.DeceptionPassTours.com. There are two ferry routes to Whidbey — the Clinton to Mukilteo run on the south end, and the Coupeville to Port Townsend route. Check with the Washington State Ferries for time and rates. During the summer months, reservations are suggested when traveling the Coupeville ferry route. Access on the north end is via the Deception Pass Bridge routing travelers to Highway 20, which then connects to I-5 at Mount Vernon.
