We open up the Museum, integrate it with the park and connect it to the surrounding neighborhood. Like urban acupuncture we improve the circulation in and around the Museum by creating new access points, opening arteries, animating many types of experiences and enhancing the ongoing regeneration of the Exarchia neighborhood. The Museum and the City become one. The extended and revitalized National Archaeological Museum will become an urban magnet and a place for ALL – museum visitors, tourists, scholars and the citizens of Athens at large.

The vicissitudes of Europe's largest steelworks constitute an emergency issue not only for the city but also for the inhabitants. The debate opened in the 21st edition of the Villard, tries to shift the focus from the quality of the buildings to the quality of living. The three selected areas for the project exploration, Salinella, Tamburi and Paolo VI, are symptomatic of these needs and express them fully in their individual fragilities, which account for a widespread overall dimension.

About the project

The main theme of the Salinella District project is the regeneration of some stratifications present in the area and the securing of the entire site with respect to the high hydraulic risk. The reading of the urban materials present, in particular along the edges of the Salina, and of the consequent hydraulic vulnerability, have allowed to build an accurate intervention strategy that is declined in a sort of adaptive urban infrastructure, able to build a new interface between the city and the territory. The project imagines a new edge, along the perimeter of the Salina, which aims to create a space of open dialogue between multiple realities.

The urban infrastructure is entrusted with the task of defining a closer relationship between city and countryside and, at the same time, to contain the expansion of the built environment and work on the existing, facilitating the crossing of the landscape to the consolidated urban fabric. The infrastructure manifests itself in the form of a park: as an urban device that intercepts the quality of spaces, both the residual ones still waiting for a definition, and those between the layers present in the area.

Site Plan: Starting from the geography of the risk, it takes an adaptive form, requalifying and recomposing the spaces in between

The soil is entrusted with the task of explicating the re-founding action of the place, securing it against the rising waters of the Salina. The result is prefigured as an inner karst landscape, accessible from the city and from the new flows generated by the park; the construction of a new relationship between artifice and nature; a hypertext of relationships mediated by the elements of nature that take possession of this space and its cavities. It is precisely the porous spaces from which the new social habitat takes shape. Salt marsh side elevation: The system consists of towers, as reference elements in the urban landscape

Year: 2020 Location: Pescara Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Pasquale William Sforza, Luca Lidonnici Competition: Pescara Summer School, Faraway so Close

The health emergency and the socio-economic crisis in progress, if on the one hand have laid bare the structural fragilities of the Italian country, on the other offer an opportunity to rethink the forms of living in cities and territories. In this perspective, public space with its regenerative and structuring qualities is particularly important. Taking that element as central to our project, we have developed an experimental proposal for the regeneration of the Borgo Marino Sud neighborhood in Pescara. We asked ourselves: how to rethink the space of socialization and aggregation within our cities? How to imagine the forms of domestic living in the city of emergency? For us, the residence must be configured as a micro cosmos in which private and public space are integrated within it.

RENEWAL OF PUBLIC HOUSING

Information

Year: 2020 Location: Pescara Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Pasquale William Sforza, Stella Lolli University course: Environmental design

The project objective is the renewal of public housing in Rancitelli district (Pescara) in "Via lago di Borgiano". The demolition of three building blocks is planned to have a direct connection between the project area and the playroom in "Via lago di Borgiano". The regeneration of the neighborhood focuses on improving the architectural quality of the public space but also of the remaining building blocks by acting not only outside but also inside through a redistribution of housing. The solutions were chosen after a careful study of the area in order to highlight the needs and adopt appropriate systems to increase bioclimatic performances.

The bioclimatic greenhouse is one of the techniques for the "passive" exploitation of solar energy. The lean-to greenhouse is a transparent structure added to the existing or planned building and exploits the process of the greenhouse effect. As a result, the infrared radiation is "trapped" inside, causing a rise in temperature, thus achieving the objective. The greenhouse represents a buffer space that improves the thermal insulation of the external wall and is an unheated space. Energy savings are expected because the temperature difference between the interior of the house and the greenhouse is less than the temperature difference between the house and the exterior space. The greenhouse is oriented towards the south but in this case also towards the north in order to have an extension of the internal environment to be used as a veranda and to improve the thermal insulation of the north wall since it makes much less use of solar radiation as it is exposed to it for a minimum period of time which is not sufficient to implement the greenhouse effect process KFH described above. MARCONE RESTORATION Information Year: 2020 Location: Atessa Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Luca Antonio Lidonnici, Lorenzo Santone University course: Restoration 2 About the project We have been asked to plan the restoration of the palace Marcone, built around 1600 that rises in the historical center of Atessa. This building it develops in the ground below in various hypogeal spaces and in one of these spaces there is an oil mill reachable from the countryside below, which has served for years as a source of income for the family. Our project consists in detecting, identifying and remedying the deterioration of the building. In addition, we designed the conversion of some spaces in an exhibition space that could be reached by anyone by eliminating any kind of architectural barrier.

TRAVEL CHAIR Information

About the project

7

Year: 2020 Author: Roberto Monticelli University course: Design 2

The travel chair is an object that follows you, unfolds/closes, carries by hand, opens/unfolds and follows you again; the travel chair is an object with a strongly necessary character,in which the aspects of tradition, the conditions of the materials and the kinematic systems of the structure, are the conditions for the definition of the form, which language technique.

MIURA ORI_ TRADITION AND CHARACTER

The initial idea has always been to design a chair that when closed, had the size and lightness of a notebook and at the time of need, in a journey as when there are no seats on the train, you can open and sit. So the most important character that dictated the design process was the spatial development of the object and Origami was able to translate this necessity in the best way, in particular the Miura-Ori fold. The technical tradition of the Miura-Ori origami allowed me to keep tied together some prerogatives that I had set myself such as maneuverability, lightness and adaptability.

Chair development and ergonomics: The design of the chair focused on the action of sitting and carrying the chair.

FINE

The Miura-Ori fold consists of alternating concave or convex folds that allow to reduce/compress a sheet of paper considerably. An interesting aspect of this technique is that the paper becomes "programmed" and develops a fold memory. I created tubular structures capable of developing spatially due to localized bending along prescribed fold lines. Coupling these hinged "origami tubes" substantially increased the rigidity of the system, which allows only one mode of deformation, the horizontal one. Once coupled, the "origami tubes" were arranged by means of a cellular assembly that improved in its own way the mechanical characteristics and the geometric versatility, thus obtaining a developable and light structure.

The area is located along the recently developed "via verde", an ecological infrastructure designed to connect the centralities established in that part of the city. The project is based on a main longitudinal axis that connects “via verde” to the university. Along the axis were placed the new structures for university departments, an auditorium, laboratories and a modern media library.

Year: 2019 Location: Bogotà, Vederedas Charrasquera and Charras de San José del Guaviare, Colombia Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Luca Antonio Lidonnici, Salvatore Festa, Antonio Torlontano University: Università Gabriele d’Annunzio, Dipartimento di Architettura - Uni La Salle

The workshop was held on an itinerant basis, based in Charrasquera, in the municipality of San Josè del Guaviare, a complex reality, formed by a community of people who live in a border area, already subject to conflicts in the recent past, including armed conflicts, subject to conditions of particular difficulty: environmental, economic and social, access to resources and common goods, in search of a new balance and new perspectives of life. The main focus of the workshop was in fact the small village partially reborn after the destruction of 2002, at the height of the Colombian armed conflict. In this center, inhabited today by very few people, but re-emerging center of the community life of a "veredas" (low-density settlement units, characteristic of the territorial organization of rural Colombia), we carried out some activities such as the construction of an ecological kitchen with earth and materials of the place and ecological and environmental survey and monitoring of the landscape, including a visit to the ETCR center of Charras and the natural area of Laguna del Nare.

CONCEPT DESIGN OF A YACHT Information

Year: 2018 Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Luca Antonio Lidonnici, Lorenzo Santone Univerity Course: Design 1

The project has as a fundamental objective the organization of the distribution layouts of the internal living spaces of a modern shuttle for family cruising, 6 guests plus 4 crew members. The areas studied were: the living area located in the Main deck and the owner's cabin located in the Lower deck. First, we tried to identify, for these two environments, what were the needs necessary for survival and life of a family, and what the needs for the proper conduct of simple activities on board the boat. At this point it was possible to arrive at the formulation of a first interior concept that provides for the organization of the living area and the owner's cabin according to certain requirements, found in the brief, which serve to satisfy all the activities derived from the needs and requirements.

About the project

I have been asked to design a student housing block on the ex FEA lands in Pescara (a long and narrow lot orthogonal to the beach, between Via Manzoni and Via Foscolo). The project focuses on the location of the building and the division between public and student spaces through a large elevated square. The project provide space for 160 students, with related services and cultural facilities for the city such as library, cafe, gym and footsal pitch.

DESIGN OF A SINGLE FAMILY VILLA

Information

Year: 2017 Location: Francavilla Authors: Roberto Monticelli, Luca Antonio Lidonnici, Lorenzo Santone University course: Architectural Composition 1

The course required the design of a single-family villa, with attached garage and boathouse, on an imaginary lot facing the sea with direct access from the road. The ground floor, intended for the living area, consists of a series of ordered spaces that offer varying views of the sea. The entire glass facade folds almost invisibly around the spaces and creates a contour that, together with the projecting superstructure, allows for varying incidence of light. The wooden box, intended for the sleeping area has several large openings. In the center of the house there is an empty space with a skylight. In the facade facing the sea are the bedrooms with a panoramic view of the surrounding nature. Wooden sunshades were placed to shield the sunlight and solar heat.
