CELEBRATING 21 YEARS OF DESIGN, PEOPLE, AND ADVENTURE

B

eing in business for more than two decades has taught us a lot about being a successful member of the outdoor community, but nothing could have prepared us for this last year. We had to learn and adapt quickly to an ever-changing landscape. It called for more compassion, kindness, generosity and gratitude, and imbued a Kenneth J. Hamilton Photography | White Mountains, NH

deeper appreciation for the ability to get outdoors. While it was not the adventure we planned on, it was the one we were required to navigate. As Kahtoola turns 21, we’re celebrating just how far we’ve come as a small, private company. We continue to design gear that

shapes industry categories, positively impacts people’s lives and the environment, and enables awe-inspiring adventures all over the world. This year we have a renewed commitment to our mission: Make the outdoors more accessible and rewarding by building exceptional products, and we’re proud to share the great things we’ve done along the way, show where we’re headed, and encourage more people to thrive outdoors.

DESIGN

W

e are a company that cares about and believes in great design. But “design” at Kahtoola involves much more than product designers building their ideas into products. It’s an inclusive process that starts with considering people’s adventures and involves customers, dealers, sales reps, ambassadors, friends, family, and our entire team of Kahtoola Product review at Kahtoola HQ during 2018 ambassador retreat | Flagstaff, AZ

associates. We listen closely to understand what challenges people are facing—whether it’s from product testers, at trade shows, sponsored events, or out on the trail—and include them in the process to find solutions. This results in real influence of the products we make, and gear that truly improves people’s outdoor experiences.

PEOPLE Mirna Valerio Our connection to Mirna Valerio, aka the Mirnavator, is as natural as it is filled with joy, laughs, and a passion for adventure. Residing in the icy, snow-covered hills of Vermont, she trusts and regularly uses Kahtoola products to help her train in winter and stay active all year long. In 2020, she participated in our annual Kahtoola Uphill race, and we’re excited to bring her on as our newest Kahtoola ambassador, partnering to inspire others, spread health and happiness, and promote diversity in the outdoor industry. Michelle Craig Photography

Rob Krar Over the past decade, we’ve had the great fortune to work with ultrarunner Rob Krar. It began when he approached us about a team sponsorship for the TransRockies™ Run in 2009. We instead sent a team of passionate everyday runners (which later turned into our annual Kahtoola-TransRockies™ Run Team Giveaway). As fate had it, a member of that team became his wife. Ever since, he’s been a steady supporter of our brand and regularly offers valuable input as a new product tester. Not only do we admire his talent as an athlete and ambassador, but also the positive figure he is in our local community, speaking out on mental health issues, advocating for public lands protection, and mentoring aspiring trail and ultrarunners. Linda Guerrette

ADVENTURE Ray Zahab “It’s one thing when your gear makes your adventure more achievable. It’s another when it is necessary for safety,” says Canadian explorer and ultrarunner Ray Zahab. For more than a decade he has relied on MICROspikes® for epic, unsupported expeditions in some of the most remote places on Earth. In 2009, he set the South Pole world record (1,130 km), crossed Siberia’s Lake Baikal (650 km) in 2010, and has crushed multiple missions in the Canadian Arctic. His most recent expedition (January 2020) was a self-contained speed crossing of Baffin Island from Qikiqtarjuaq to Pangnirtung Fjord (240 km), normally a 15-day journey, which he completed in five days. In February 2021, his sights and spikes are set on Ellesmere Island (1,330 km) in northern Canada. “You can find my MICROspikes® with me in the coldest regions of the planet. Not in my backpack, but on my feet!”

Natalia Gubareva | Baffin Island, Canada

When the world gets coated with snow and ice, enjoying outdoor adventures can become much more challenging. By adding reliable traction to our footwear—regardless of whether you’re jogging around the neighborhood or are deep in the mountains pushing for a snowy summit—safe travel in the harshest winter conditions becomes not only possible, but fun. Understanding the confidence and assurance having great winter traction brings to people’s outdoor experiences is what inspires our growing line of exceptional traction products.

Road running, walking City streets and sidewalks Ice, hard-packed snow Road running shoes

Spike Design Ten spikes per foot with embedded tungsten carbide tips grip icy surfaces. Each spike is held in place with a lightweight aluminum anchor and is surrounded by a TPU cleat for added traction and shock absorption. Dual Compound TPU A soft outer compound provides wear-resistance and flexibility, and aids in snow release, while a hard inner compound near the spikes disperses force against the outsole of footwear. Additional upward-facing traction ensures the traction plates stay in place against footwear.

Reinforced Eyelets Using a patented eyelet design, tough TPU inserts reinforce key stress points, allowing the elastomer harness to be lighter and stronger.

Toe Bail TPU toe bail provides added security and prevents the toe from pushing through the front of the elastomer harness.

Raised Heel Tab Allows for easy pull-back and removal. Elastomer Harness Low-profile and ergonomically shaped, the elastomer harness is constructed from a durable TPE for a secure fit that remains stretchy in cold temperatures, down to -22°F (-30°C).

Mile after mile, NANOspikes® footwear traction provides unrivaled comfort, grip, and performance when running on icy streets, roads, and sidewalks. Ten extremely wear-resistant tungsten carbide spikes per foot bite into frozen surfaces and highly durable dual-compound TPU traction plates feature specialized inserts that disburse impact forces. NANOspikes® also allow users to safely transition between dry and slippery pavement without affecting the natural running motion, providing the high performance road runners demand so they can train and stay outside all year round. Spike Design Twelve integrated spikes per foot deliver three levels of traction. Tungsten carbide tips bite into ice and packed snow, aluminum steps grip uneven surfaces, and TPU lugs dig into loose terrain.

TPU Traction Matrix An industry-first TPU Traction Matrix is extremely durable and more abrasion resistant than steel. The open design quickly sheds snow and adapts to a wide range of flexible footwear.

Reinforced Eyelets Using a patented eyelet design, tough TPU inserts reinforce key stress points, allowing the elastomer harness to be lighter and stronger.

Integrated Toe Bail Using the same technology and TPU as the reinforced eyelets, an integrated toe bail provides added security and prevents the toe from pushing through the front of the elastomer harness. Raised Heel Tab Allows for easy pull-back and removal. Elastomer Harness A new TPE elastomer harness geometry optimizes fit and allows for easy entry. Low-profile and highly durable, it remains stretchy in cold temperatures, down to -22°F (-30°C) Available Colors:

GAITERS

Why Gaiters? One tiny rock, a small amount of sand, or a little bit of moisture is all it takes to make you feel less capable, shorten a great outing, or turn a fun day into a miserable one. Anyone who has stepped foot on a trail can resonate with the irritation of constantly stopping to dump out your shoes, and the experience of having gaiters on your feet versus not wearing them is significant. Gaiters are a valuable tool that can help avoid these scenarios, but they are traditionally viewed as an accessory. When designing our gaiters, we viewed them not just as an accessory, but part of what we consider a “three-piece footwear system. The first socks, second footwear, and third Kahtoola gaiters, designed to complete the system and create a protectiveyet-comfortable barrier around the foot.

e’re committed to making the best gaiters possible and, I admit it; I personally love gaiters. The way they keep me from the discomfort of getting snow, dirt, pebbles, thorny grasses and seeds in my socks and shoes when I’m otherwise focused on the task at hand ... moving efficiently, makes me happy. Annoying issues like frozen ankles, shoelaces untying, and stopping to dump debris out of my shoe start to add up. And it’s really surprised me how wearing a well-designed gaiter changes where you step. Once you realize you don’t have to avoid deeper snow, loose dirt, or dry grasses, you are free to take the most efficient line. Our gaiters are designed and built to deliver a better experience that makes getting out much more rewarding and fun. — Danny Giovale Kahtoola Founder & Owner

O

ur support of social and environmental causes is as important to us as designing exceptional products. When Kahtoola was established in 1999, the ability to give back and a long-standing belief in the potential and goodness of people was built into the Kahtoola brand, and has remained at the foundation of our company after 21 years of business. In 2020, through a fun virtual run, we raised $25,000 to help provide COVID-19 relief to the Havasupai community (with whom we have regularly stood alongside in their ongoing fight to protect the Grand Canyon region from the threat of uranium mining), and donated $7,700 to the Flagstaff Family Food Center. Through Kahtoola for the People, we also awarded multiple grants to fund nonprofit projects in Nepal, India, and the Peruvian Andes. Additionally, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, our Kahtoola Uphill raised $52,000 in support of local outdoor youth education. Moving forward, we will continue to find creative ways to maintain our commitment to giving back and supporting local and global communities. If we’re not using our business to positively impact people’s lives and create a better world, we believe we’re not doing our job.
