Ozymandias for trumpet and organ

INSPIRED BY Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said--"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read, Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings. Look on my works ye Mighty, and despair!' No thing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare, The lone and level sands stretch far away."
NOTES “Ozymandias is divided into two movements: I. The lone and level sands stretch far away and II. Half sunk a shattered visage lies. The composition begins quietly, as if the traveler is standing in a vast sea of sand listening for any sound of companionship. He is greeted only by the ceaseless shift of sand in the wind. He calls out but there is no response. Repeatedly he pauses to survey the desolation - no living, or even nonliving, thing pierces the vastness of his solitude. The volume and complexity of the work grow as he approaches his destination. Suddenly, and without warning, the ruins rise out of the sand before him. The traveler, faced with what he has been searching for, pauses. Is his vision real or a mirage? At the beginning of the second movement, and after he has surveyed the ruins, the traveller mocks the so-called "King of Kings". All that is left are the broken monoliths of an ancient civilization. His train of thought, however, is interrupted. He begins to alter his opinion of the ruins, realizing how great Ozymandias must have been for anything at all to remain. The work ends triumphantly as here the traveller bows, humbly honoring the effigy of the king!
