ello and welcome to issue 108 of VWt. I’ve got to admit, I bloody love this time of year. The sun is shining (sometimes), it’s light until late and show season is in full swing, at least what there is of it this year. And, I’m going to appreciate being out and about more than ever, in fact after last year I don’t think I will ever take being at a show for granted again. It’s not just being released into the wild though that’s getting me excited, it’s the chance to finally see some vans and put some faces to those builds I’ve been following on social media over the last year. Usually a lot of our feature vans are sourced whilst at the shows, so it’s been nice to hunt down some fresh metal in the flesh. We hope you enjoy this month’s great selection of vans, all very recently photographed including one that was shot, written and sent to press on deadline week. Why am I telling you this? Well, I think it’s important that you know that we try to keep the mag as fresh as possible. Obviously, we can’t compete with the speed of online, but we think VWt is worth the wait so you get to see something more in depth than a few sentences and some emojis. Talking of getting out and about, a few issues back we did a guide to great driving roads in Britain, and it went down a storm - but we also had a few e-mails saying, oi what about Ireland?! Don’t worry, we hadn’t forgotten, we just thought we’d do one on Ireland at a later date and that time is now – so check it out on pages 61 to 66. It gives us great joy to hear that people enjoy these and some have even planned holidays around them. Remember, it’s your mag. So if there’s something you would like to see, drop us an e-mail, details are at the bottom of this page.

id Ford (43) is a builder and has been for more than twenty years. He runs his own company, Stonehaven Construction, and builds beautiful barn conversions, extensions and, if you’re feeling flush, he’ll even build you a brand-new home. He’ll show up in his trusty and beloved Transit van, get the job done and leave you to enjoy your new thing that he built. That all sounds very lovely, but it’s unlikely you bought this mag to read about that. You see, as much as Sid is a fan of his ‘backbone of Britain’ Transit (and with a surname like his, why wouldn’t he be?) his real love is his bit on the side. Yes, this 2010 T5.1 which did serve a hot minute as his work van was deemed ‘too nice’ and now lives a life of luxury whilst the Ford takes a hammering. I think we can all get onboard with this situation. The funny thing is, when Sid decided the Transporter was too nice it didn’t actually look anything like this. “I bought it about 4 years ago,” he says. “My dad’s firm was selling a few of them off. I’d always fancied one and so took the opportunity.” He used it for work for about six months, all the time messing about with the styling which isn’t something he’d done previously with any of the Transits. “I guess it’s a Volkswagen thing!” he laughs. The ‘messing about’ stage involved blacking out the windows, including those on the sliding doors of the white Startline Kombi as it was, a set of Bentley We love a bit of hydro-dipping!

wheels and some JOM coilovers. “Once I started to play around with the suspension, that’s when it was game over as a work van,” he admits. “Carrying bricks around is bad enough without having to worry about every pothole and speed bump!” The van came off the road and the real work started. Being a family man, Sid’s main goal was to create something for going away with his wife, Suzy and their kids, Woody (15) and Lottie (12). In the meantime, his energy for the Volkswagen had brought together a couple of VW owning mates and between the three they founded Tamworth Transporters in 2018. “We just wanted to create a group with a few different trades and do jobs for each other,” he says. “It started off small but once we set up a Facebook page it just went crazy.” With over

2,000 members and growing, crazy seems a fair assessment. One of the coolest things about the club is that they have their own unit where members get together and work on their vans, often helping each other with their own particular skill set in the process. It’s not all work though, the BBQ and music weekends are what it’s really about! “I can honestly say that the only thing not done by me or someone in the club was the wrap,” says Sid. Yes, of course you noticed that the once white van is now fully coated in a layer of 3M matt anthracite thanks to the skills of Wrapstarz Pro in Tamworth. “I think it was one of the first vans in the UK to be fully wrapped,” says Sid. “It took me some time to convince him to do it, but eventually he said yes!” The finished surface has since been protected with a ceramic coating applied by Dale Payne, otherwise known as Detailed By Dale in - you guessed it - Tamworth! The Pop Top UK roof, fitted just over three years ago was one of the first major changes to the van. “It was a little scary at the time, cutting a massive hole in the roof,” Sid laughs. “It came with a template though, so it was pretty straightforward.” For a man who literally builds houses, you would trust his skills would be transferable in some positive way. “Done a few now though for 14 VWt

other club members.” If that wasn’t enough for a first time go at modifying a Transporter, Sid then tracked down a second hand air ride kit online. The AccuAir setup came with HP DriveTech Struts and Bilstein rear shocks. Cutting a hole in the roof is one thing, but messing with safety critical areas like your suspension is a whole other world. “I’m happy working in most areas,” says Sid. “But when it comes to the mechanical side, that’s where I leave it to the pros.” Luckily, Tamworth Transporters have their very own suspension guy in Patrick Scott. The test drive after any major suspension work is an important part of the

process. You need to allow time to make any adjustments and dial things in so that it’s just right. In which case, Sid had Patrick install the kit in the same week he was due to head to the south of France for a family holiday - in the van! “I’m not going to lie, I was nervous during the build up,” Sid admits. In the event, the 2,000 mile round trip went without a hitch. “I took loads of tools with me,” he reveals. “Way more than I ever would normally! But, it didn’t miss a beat and hasn’t since.” Solid work, Patrick! You’ll notice the wheels getting tucked by that kit are not something Volkswagen ever offered on the Startline model, nor are they

VWt HOT VANS

Sunken air tank takes centre stage the Bentleys Sid first rolled around on. That’s because they are a customised set of 20” Judd wheels. “They really are a work of art,” Sid beams and it’s all thanks to Matt Arnold at Hinckley Body WRX. Taking some candy red paint, supplied via one of Sid’s mates who works at Triumph, Matt detailed the wheels as well as painting the barrels inside black. When it came to working out the layout, it was simply a case of storage and somewhere for a fridge. With that in mind there is plenty of room to party in the back of this LWB van. That’s even taking into account the rear bulkhead Sid built behind the seat where he stores chairs and a bank of batteries for

TOP MOD: ‘FAUX’ REAR BULKHEAD With all the space available in the LWB version, the idea of a ‘faux’ rear bulkhead is a really good one. It creates a brilliantly versatile space, completely separate from the living area of your van. With perfect access via the rear barn doors you can easily store larger bulky items with no problem. A welcome side effect is the additional noisecancelling properties offered by a large slab of 22MDF behind your head as you crash into a drunken sleep at the next show! Dad was really into it though and even built a centre console for me that I’m yet to fit.” The units are made from 22mm MDF. He wanted a nice piece of compact laminate for the worktop but, although he clearly isn’t afraid to spend on the van, kept coming up against ridiculous quotes. In the end he sourced some backboard more commonly used behind cookers in a kitchen and, by building a supporting frame made something just as good, if not better for a quarter of the price. “The lads all said that, at 9mm the top would be too flimsy,” says Sid. “But with the frame me and dad built it worked out perfectly.” The tambour door storage is another neat touch. You’d be forgiven for imagining this van is a potential keeper after all this effort, but Sid’s head has been turned. “I’ve got a good friend who owns a designer brand,” he says. “He’s got a T6 with a balloon payment due and asked me if I wanted to take it on.” It’s obviously the kind of deal not to be refused, especially the way prices of Transporters are going right now. If this represents what Sid, along with the Tamworth Transporters crew can do straight out of the blocks, just imagine what is coming next with this experience behind him! t

VWt NEWS

NEWS All the latest from the world of Transporters... The design has certainly split opinions, what do you think?

ALL-NEW MULTIVAN UNVEILED Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed the all-new Multivan, featuring a daring fresh design, more flexible interior, and, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid option. The Multivan is the replacement for the current Caravelle, but despite some confusion it is not a replacement for the T6.1. Even though it’s being called the T7 Multivan, there will be no panel van, kombi or California version on this platform. The Multivan will no longer be built on the Transporter platform and will be based on VW’s MQB platform which sits underneath the likes of the Tiguan, Seat Tarraco, Skoda Kodiaq SUVs and even the new Mk8 Golf. The Multivan will also eventually replace VW’s Touran and Sharan in the MPV section, so this gives you an idea of where it sits in the brands vision going forward. The Multivan has an all-new exterior design. The A-pillars have been remodelled to improve visibility, while rather unique front and rear lights give it a fresh look. It’s fitted with LED headlights as standard, but can be upgraded to interactive IQ LED matrix headlights, which offer a permanent full beam. The front air intakes, painted in the same colour as the vehicle, have been reduced, apparently paying tribute to the heritage of the rear air-cooled engine models of the past. Overall, the new generation has a longer wheelbase and wider, lower profile, all designed to improve aerodynamics and lower fuel consumption. The model will be available with wheels up to 19”, and in three

specifications: Multivan, Life, and Style, there will also be a LWB version. Inside, it’s more flexible and spacious than ever, with a new modular, lightweight seating system and innovative table. With space for up to seven seats, the rear five seats, can be moved and removed to suit, while the second row can be moved 180-degrees to create a conference style seating configuration. The full-width bench seat for the third row has been replaced by individual seats to allow single seats to be removed for complete flexibility. An innovative multi-function table has also been designed, using the central track, this can be moved between any of the seating rows, and for the first time can be used as a centre console between the front seats. Cool eh? Enabling the flexible seating and table track system is the completely flat floor from front to rear seats with no centre console, made possible by the removal of the traditional handbrake. Instead, the parking brake is activated electronically by button, or automatically. The cockpit area has been completely redesigned alongside a new multi-function steering wheel and it’s only offered with an automatic DSG gearbox controlled via shift-by-wire technology. All key features in the new Multivan are now on one line of sight, with a secondary line for other functions. On the central line are the 10.25-inch ‘Digital Cockpit’ display and the 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Centrally

arranged between the two on a high-gloss black surface are the new, minimalist shift-bywire DSG controls. It has a towing capacity of up to 2,000kg and is available with three powertrains, including for the first time a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option. The new eHybrid combines a 1.4 TSI 150 PS engine with an 85kW electric motor to produce a combined power output of 160kW/218 PS, providing silent, zeroemission driving when in electric only mode for short, urban trips. The eHybrid uses a bespoke six-speed DSG gearbox. The front-wheel drive Multivan is also available with two four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines: a 1.5 TSI 136 PS and a 2.0 TSI 204 PS. A four-cylinder turbo diesel, with a power output of 150 PS, will join next year. All of these are twinned with a seven-speed DSG gearbox as standard. Prices are expected to be announced later this year and start from about £50k.

DAD’S THE WORD Hi VWt, I’ve been reading the mag for about four years now, since I bought my van in fact. Each month after getting the mag there is always a ritual that happens - somehow the magazine finds its way into the hands of my father, Martin, who throughout my van’s life has been there helping me bring my vision to life. He’s always amazed at the vans and the attention to detail that people put into their builds. With last month’s issue being no exception. Top work and keep doing you VWt! Dan Longhurst via email VWt: Hey Dan, it seems your ol’ man has good taste. Maybe you should get him his own subscription for his birthday? Ahem, page 86 by the way...

GIMME MORE Hey VWt, First off, long time subscriber here, love the mag and the variety of vans. I was reading issue 107 and noticed Nadine and Bastian’s amazing 2020 T6 4Motion with the Terock conversion in the Your Vans section, what a build! Any chance of a full feature? That thing looks insane! Darren Eden, e-mail via email VWt: Hello Darren, we’ve had a few emails/DMs etc about this van, it’s a stunner eh? We’re hoping to have a full feature real soon, so stay tuned!

20 VWt

SOMETHING DIFFERENT Hey VWt, I’m a big fan of the money no object builds, as love to see what can be done when budget isn’t an issue, but I prefer the home builds, so I was really stoked to see Mark Shire’s ‘70s style T5. I’m sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but fair play for featuring something very different! Denis Wright via Instagram VWt: Hi Denis, glad you liked it. Amazing what one man can build in a gazebo eh?

RED HOT Hello VWt, Would it be possible to put a picture of my father-inlaw’s T5 in your magazine? VWt HOT VANS

SANO One thing that always puzzled me in American VW mags when I was kid was the word Sano. Years later, I found out that it meant “Same as no other”. I can’t think of a better van to use this word on than Tom Kahler’s T6 - it’s truly unique! Words Mark Walker Photography Tom Kahler

VWt HOT VANS VWt

The cabin mods are subtle and classy

I

’m not saying that every van VWt feature isn’t different in some way from other vans; many of the vans we feature adhere to a similar recipe of parts and modifications, but they’ll always carry through the owner’s interpretation of what’s cool. You could put two vans side by side that are the same model, year and colour and they’d be like chalk and cheese. Likewise, you could have two vans parked side by side with the exact same combination of parts, but they’d likely be from different years, different colours, or would have a few things that one owner preferred over the other. Some people, though, like to blaze their own trail. They look at everything that’s out there and conclude that they quite like the concept, but the execution isn’t quite right. I’m one of these people, never taking the easy

route to anything can be exhausting - like when you spend a whole day searching for tyres with the right look or being perfectionist over tiny details – but it’s also seriously rewarding when you cross the finish line on a project and know you’ve created something truly Sano. Tom Kahler undoubtedly falls into the trailblazer category. Anyone who’s creative enough to forge a living in the field of photography has an eye for detail, as well as the urge to create something 100% unique. Turning your back on predictability isn’t always straightforward, but it comes with a huge sense of satisfaction when you look at the results of your endeavours and think... “I did that”. If you check out Tom’s Instagram on - @ tomkahler – you’ll realise that, while he also

snaps pictures of cars, it’s the adventure and lifestyle that really floats his boat. This isn’t Tom’s first VW van rodeo; he previously owned a high mileage T5, which turned into a bit of an unreliable beast. The decision was made to invest in a T6, but, try as he might, he couldn’t find someone out there who could build him what he wanted. Before he could address this though, he still had to find the right base van. He spent a lot of time looking (usual story) before finding this LWB Highline 180PS T6 with a tailgate and just 40k on the clock. Searching the used car or van market is never fun. I’ve said this before and it may have just sounded like a moan, but I don’t think it matters what price bracket you’re in – the great stuff, with the best spec, always gets snapped up super-quick and most people don’t know how to price vehicles. Let’s just say there’s always a lot of abused, overpriced shite on the secondhand market and the abuse only comes to light after you’ve travelled a ton of miles to view something. In Tom’s case, it was DSG that kept tripping him up; reading that, you’re probably thinking that he wanted an auto but couldn’t find one, but in the price bracket he was looking in, 24 VWt

pretty much everything with high spec had DSG and Tom didn’t want it. Reflecting on my own opinions on VW’s direct-shift, Tom isn’t a fan either: “DSG kind of annoyed me; I have a Porsche Cayman with the PDK setup and I like it, but I just found the DSG really clunky with tons of lag”. I hear ya, Tom, I do. Having tried DSG in anything from T6s to diesel and GTI Golfs, I’m definitely in the no camp. With the right van – a 6-speed manual – eventually secured, Tom could get on with slamming it on B14s with big wheels and a carbon splitter. Yep, we know what you’re

The shaker style kitchen with tiled splashbacks is pretty cool. I mean, there are a lot of companies out there making very cool and truly unique looking cabinets these days – a far cry from the staid old grey veneered or twee wood units of old. But the units in this van are different again. I’ve got nothing against rustic burned wood or sleek fibreglass at the other end of the spectrum, but I think Tom nailed it with these units, in that it feels like a sleek modern house and a place that would be cosy enough to spend time in, without ever feeling like the environment was cold or clinical – I love it.

The attention to detail is next level VWt 25

VWt HOT VANS

thinking. It’s not that Tom didn’t like the B14s, the wheels, or the whole package: “I enjoyed it and it never caused us trouble in that guise, but we wanted to take a trip to Norway, which would involve a lot of wild camping, so a rethink was on the cards”. Out went the B14s and in came a Bilstein 50mm lift kit with Eibach springs, along with a set of BF Goodrich AT3s on Black Rhino Boxer 18” wheels. “They weren’t supposed to fit, but I’d already upgraded the van to the big brakes that came as standard on the later Euro 6 models, so choices were severely limited” comments Tom. Surprisingly, despite going upwards over 100mm in height, Tom reckons the handling hasn’t suffered, such is the quality of the Bilstein/Eibach parts and the chunky square profile of the AT3 tyres. To protect the modesty of the BFGs and to keep the MOT tester at bay, Tom fitted some Vanstyle arch covers shortly after the ride-height hike, which add to the purposeful look, as do the bull bars and LED lightbar – both cheap eBay finds incidentally. The gap in between the two ride heights was a fairly involved and sometimes frustrating one; carrying out a bespoke conversion from scratch will always pose challenges, but some of these challenges are out of our control, especially when we trust well-established companies to supply parts, only to have multiple issues. It was the slimline pop-top that gave Tom a swift towbar to the shins and, much like a swan-neck towbar in a tight garage, it was the gift that kept on giving. The pop-top on 26 VWt

Tom’s van was launched as an option for the more budget-conscious by the company in question, but it still cost plenty of Tom’s hard-earned and the kicks kept coming when the van had to go back twice, leaving him without a working car for over 2 months, without even the offer of a rental. “In the end, I decided to just live with a few paint runs and other issues, as the customer service was shocking; they’ve since withdrawn this poptop from sale” adds Tom.

Black Rhino Boxer wheels are a tough looking addition

Distracting himself from that meant diving headlong into the rest of the build; as mentioned earlier, Tom couldn’t find a company to build him what he wanted, so he ultimately decided to design something himself: “I supplied some technical drawings to vanfurniture.com, having had a measure up and they built the shaker style cabinets from the drawings; I definitely feel like there’s more storage with this design than the average T6 layout” says Tom.

VWt HOT VANS SWAMP THING The Swamper trend is certainly picking up pace in the UK & Ireland, but it’s taken a while. Unlike other countries, like the USA, there’s not exactly many public places to use off-road vehicles over here. If you’re lucky enough to live in a county where there are public byways, then you may be able to get off the beaten track a little bit to explore, although camping on them is illegal and it’s not like we can just drive off the road and into the wilderness like in other countries. At least there’s a few beaches we can drive them on and they really come in to their own in the winter months.

If Batman built a T6, we reckon this would be it! Being more explicit about what he didn’t want, Tom explains the conundrum he faced: “I found that everything on offer was either grey and clinical like a dentist’s surgery, or so rustic that you’d feel like you’re in a log cabin – I wanted a nice balance – homely and cosy, but not overly rustic”. The shaker cabinets and tiled splashback give the feel of a full-sized kitchen or a much bigger high-end #vanlife style build. Tom rightly decided that the ‘usual’ choice of cooker/hob with a glass lid and integrated tap just wouldn’t fit his vision, so he sourced a more traditional looking hob and found a tap he wanted in Thailand after days of searching online. There’s also white acrylic laser cut wall panels, as Tom isn’t a fan of carpet lining; he sourced them through Phil at Lazy Leisure, who was very helpful throughout the build. With the Norway trip and many other offgrid adventures in mind, there are two large solar panels on the roof feeding two leisure batteries through a GTEK power unit and there’s a hookup unit under the bonnet. But, Tom is way more into off-grid camping than being on a crowded campsite; this is why winter camping appeals too, as the usually packed places can be completely deserted in winter. The desire to go out camping in the dead of winter also saw the 25L freshwater tank sited on the inside of the van - it’s no good having plumbed freshwater if it’s frozen solid. Forsaking the rock and roll bed staple, Tom found an L-shaped bed from vanfurniture.com with full versatility in mind which makes the

And, with added 6mm threaded plates in the floor of Tom’s design, it can either convert to a bench so than he can get his motorbike in, or the whole bed can be completely removed in 10 minutes for full versatility - most rock and roll beds don’t offer any of these things. Just as the van was finished and ready for Norway, the whole world went kaboom and it never happened; they did manage to squeeze a trip to the north of Scotland in between lockdowns, but that’s about as far north as it got. Surprisingly, after building the dream van and never quite getting to realise its potential, it will now probably get sold - Tom has the desire for a more practical daily car and a camper build that does everything that the T6 does but on steroids – think 4-Motion Crafter. We can’t wait to see what Tom builds next! t

JUST KAMPERS ROCK & ROLL BEDS FULL & 3/4 WIDTH Check out the all-new Just Kampers Solution Bed, one of the most adaptable and versatile Rock & Roll beds we’ve seen. The system is designed for SWB T5s and T6s - not Caravelle/ Shuttle models - and JK tell us it’s the first pull tested and TUV approved seat/bed to be introduced in the UK that doesn’t need evasive chassis modifications. Which is great news! It also offers 3 or 2 seat options with integral fitted 3-point belts, integrated adjustable headrests and ISO Fix child seat fixings. In its upright position, the full-width & 3/4 width seats offer great support and with over 6 inches of comfortable foam you can be pretty sure you’ll get a good nights kip on it too. It’s making us want a nap just thinking about it. The inbuilt track system allows you to slide the seat forward and back through multiple points or remove it completely, should you require all of your vans load space. So now you can carry loads, put your bike in the back of your van, or even your surf gear whilst still seating your family and friends. Designed with a lift and slide operation, the seat can be

moved simply and quickly by lifting the front lever under the base of the seat – then just pull or push to slide the seat into your preferred position within the track system. When you are ready to use the bed, it deploys in seconds. Pull out the locking strap, rotate the seat cushion over to a horizontal position, then pull the red tag on the backrest towards you and drop it into place. Voila, you now have a super flat bed ready to be used. And, returning the bed to a seat is just as simple. The bed also features an adjustable rear cushion, which can be used as a comfortable back support whilst the seat base and backrest are folded flat. When in its seated configuration, the rear cushion can also be folded down to be used as a parcel shelf or folded back to create more rear space. Oh, and the price includes free professional fitting, the floor rail system, insulated raised ply flooring and Altro vinyl flooring. Lovely! Priced from £4850 (3/4 width) www.justkampers.com

WHERE THERE’S MUCK THERE’S BRASS Saved from the jaws of the scrapyard crusher, Matt Diaper’s super-cool T4 proves that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure... Words Mark Walker Photography Rich Pearce

W

here’s there’s muck, there’s brass. It’s a Yorkshire phrase and I’m a Yorkshireman; it means that where there’s dirt or junk, there’s money and it’s true. There’s plenty of money in scrap and there are plenty of bargains to be had if you work at a scrapyard too. In a world where most people unnecessarily throw away good stuff to buy shiny new things and keep up with the Joneses, it’s refreshing to see a build that the owner built from a discarded Junkyard dog. Honestly, if you’ve never built a car from scavenged parts, or pieced something back together from a junkyard ‘shell, then you haven’t lived, or at least haven’t experienced the immense satisfaction that it entails. When you can stand back and look at a finished project and think “I built that”, it’s so satisfying and I should know; over the last 20 years, I’ve mainly imported ‘junkyard special’ Split and Bay buses from the dry southwestern USA states and pieced them back together. I hear a lot of people saying the word build/ built these days, but lowering a nice van and

40 VWt

bolting on a set of rims isn’t really what I’d call a build. If you haven’t sweated over it, skinned your knuckles or spent hours piecing together missing parts, then is it really a build? Everyone has a different opinion and this is mine. It’s one thing, however, buying a van from a junkyard in Arizona, where metal doesn’t rust, but another thing entirely buying a van from a UK scrapyard. Most vans over here are scrapped because they are uneconomical to repair and a large part of this constitutes rust. Matt Diaper, owner of the T4 you see here is a proper Harold Steptoe in his mentality and, why wouldn’t he be? His Granddad owned a scrapyard and he started wielding the spanners in that scrapyard at the tender age of 7 years old – it’s in his blood. From those tender beginnings, Matt has built a career working in scrapyards and now works for Silverlake – one of the largest car breakers in the UK. In fact, Matt had just started his job at Silverlake when this T4 came in, this was seven years ago. According to Matt: “I was in my first week at Silverlake and had some money in the bank from the sale of my caravan. I was asked to

SCRAP STAR We’ve all seen those ‘Made from Junkyard Parts’ type stickers, but how many of them contain this many? When Matt spied his T4 in the yard, he was told to drop it in the bailer (that’s the crusher if you don’t speak scrapyard) but he defied orders and bagged himself a project for a low price. When you consider that it didn’t even have any wheels and tyres on and was fully decontaminated already for disposal, we think you’ll agree that Matt has done pretty well bringing it back from the dead, especially considering the horrors of the concrete that was contained within. It would have probably not done the bailer much good, let’s face it.

take this T4 shell to the bailer, but I forked it onto some racking in the far corner of the yard out of harm’s way instead”. From this point, it took a couple of weeks of haggling with his new bosses to get a deal on the van. “I knew they’d paid £135 for it, so the first offer of £600 just wasn’t going to cut it” he adds. In the end, the deal was £300. For this, he got a ‘knackered’ rolling shell that he squirrelled away on a neighbour’s drive for six months, then it moved to his mate’s garage for another one to two years. In this time, he was stockpiling parts for cheap or free and eventually dug into it, revealing the full horrors of why it ended up in the scrappers. “The sliding door hinges had failed, so they’d roped it to the other side of the van from the inside, then concreted it in place”. Says Matt. Yes, you did read right – the concrete needed to be attacked for a couple of hours with a bolster chisel before it’d give up the hold and, typically, the last hit with the bolster went through the sill channel, necessitating more work.

PP Tuning helped with the exhaust 42 VWt

After a couple of years of chipping away at the project (see what I did there?) it was finally at the painter’s and was in paint by the time the first lockdown kicked in. According to Matt: “The painter was closing up shop completely for lockdown, so I had to go and get it into a driveable state and run it home, just in the nick of time. Fortunately, this timing couldn’t have worked out better, as Matt had just moved to a new house with a driveway, meaning Lockdown meant plenty of paid time off work to build his van! Luckily, he’d got some epic deals on parts from work. The front captain’s chairs were £10 for the pair, the rear bench, rubber mat and full ply lining kit were £5: “It was all going to be chucked in a skip” adds Matt. Even the rear timber for the interior build came from work for a total investment of £0: “They were knocking down a building in the yard, so I asked for the wood and they told me to take whatever I needed, but to do it quickly” adds Matt. With such a huge pile of cheap and free parts and a freshly painted ‘shell in ‘green’ (that’s all Matt is prepared to share) sitting on his driveway, it turned into a pretty simple build from there on out – one that ‘just’ needed plenty of time investing, with not a huge amount of digging into his pockets. “In total, I’ve spent £5367”he told us. This goes to show you that you can’t build anything for peanuts anymore. Gone are the

days when you could buy and build a van for a few grand all-in. It’s the parts and materials costs that have rocketed in the last few years, meaning that, even in a case like this where the base vehicle was cheap, the majority of the parts were bought used, and the owner did everything except the paint, it still cost over £5k. Not too shabby for something that included pro paintwork though! With the paint sorted, the first step, as always, was to slam the van on the front torsions and add 5” Faulkner springs and GMax shortened shocks. Matt also added Scarface Lowrider plates and shortened drop links to help smooth out the bumps, before bolting a banded 16” steel wheel on each corner. Damien Force did the honours on these before they received some bronze powder coat. With the paint and stance nailed, there

TOP MOD: GREEN WITH ENVY The colour is pretty sublime – no wonder Matt is keeping the code close to his chest (all he would say is that it’s from a classic) and, combined with the bronze banded steels it looks awesome. The stance obviously helps – everything looks better when it’s on the floor, let’s face it. I’ve talked plenty (probably a bit too much) about colour in the past, but it seems that painting a ‘90s van in a classic colour really works well - we can imagine plenty of you hitting the colour charts to try and figure out Matt’s secret and we’re sure there’ll be copiers.

The front captain’s chairs cost just £10, for the pair! 44 VWt

was plenty of time to add a rear spoiler from V Dubs and some front DRLs and rear smoked light from Silverlake. Being an earlier changeover model, the engine options are really slow, slow and slightly less slow if you want diesel. Matt’s van has the slightly less slow 2.4 N/A diesel lump. He’s woken it up a little with a PP Tuning exhaust, which is his favourite feature on the van, but his future plans are to add a turbo and intercooler conversion. The inside of the van is where Matt let his creativity run riot, he built everything himself from burned scrap timber and free bed slats from the local tip, including a central dashboard cover that neatly trims up the heater controls and Pioneer double DIN DAB head unit. This puts the power down through Sony Explode 6x9s in the rear, Explode front and dash speakers and an Explode component in the custom console. There’s also a Power Acoustic sub with built-in and a separate volume control in the rear. The dash also features a custom wood topper and check out the wood upper glovebox lid too! Whatever isn’t wood in the cab area has been painted black or sticker bombed, while a Momo steering wheel and shifter extension with alloy knob keeps things on the straight and narrow. Moving to the rear, there’s the factory T4 rear bench seat that was liberated from work and a fold-out wood bed setup once the seat backrest is folded flat. Rustic it may be, but there’s still plenty of tech crammed in there, with a roof-mounted

Matt rescued the bed slats from his local tip solar panel linked to dual leisure batteries through a solar charge controller and a 240volt hookup that’s all neatly tucked away in a cupboard accessible through the rear tailgate, which has its own story: “The tailgate was a tenner from work, but it was so badly bent that I had to put an Acrow underneath once it was bolted to the van and swing on it until it was straight” adds Matt. With the TV in the back, the van is more than comfortable enough for a few days away

and Matt loves the finished result. Matt also owns a Transit van (for his sins) and notes just how much better people’s reactions are to the T4: “Everyone waves at you out in traffic; it’s like magic”. Having taken a full seven years to come to fruition, albeit with three of these spent sitting in various driveways and garages, Matt has no intention of moving it on to a new owner. With a bit more power from the forthcoming turbo conversion, we reckon it’ll be the cherry on the Belgian bun. t

VWt SHOWS

EARLY EDITION 2021 After a year of no shows, we hit Sywell Aerodrome for the always awesome Early Edition – damn it’s good to be back! Words & Photography Glenn Rowswell

I

’ve worked on automotive magazines for 15 plus years now and I’ve written and snapped more show reports than I’ve eaten overpriced venue ‘gourmet’ burgers – a tenner, for that?! So, it feels pretty strange to be writing this, the first event I’ve attended for well over a year. I knew I had missed show season and events, but I didn’t realise quite how much until I started seeing low slung VAGs scrapping the tarmac on the roads towards Northamptonshire. Nothing beats that feeling as you drive towards a show with your tribe and people that just get it, get you and get your way of life. I guess, as cliché as it sounds it’s just a Dub thing and others wouldn’t understand. Luckily, I arrived at Early Edition just before the main show traffic arrived, so I had a chance to soak up the preshow vibes and then witness the smiles and pure elation as people jumped out of their motors and onto car show terra firma for the first time in over a year. I can’t lie, it felt pretty special. Yes, it felt weird at first, but then kind of normal like the last year had all just been a horrible dream - if only, eh?! Of course, there was social distancing, face masks for indoors and a bit of apprehension in the air, but there was certainly a feel-good vibe. Show wise there were three main areas, a hangar and the surrounding areas with a lot of the big show cars, then an adjacent area which was a bit like a car park, 54 VWt

apart from there no beat-up SUVs and it was pretty much just all slammed VAGs and then a van area - the bit we were interested in of course. There was a huge turnout of Transporters, helped out massively by the Lowdown Transporters guys and then a healthy sprinkling of more from Scarface Lowriders and Low Intent. There were also plenty of Caddy’s and even a few Crafters, including Slammbassador’s latest creation a 2009 pre-faclift Crafter aka The Slug. This thing has to be seen in action, one for the insanely low driving height and secondly just to see peoples faces as a 3-tonne commercial drives past looking like its suspension is broken Now I hate to be all British and start talking about the weather, but the aforementioned really did lead to it being a show of two halves. The morning was dry, windy and somewhat cold but offered a good chance to walk around the show and get some snaps - but early afternoon the heavens opened, and they didn’t close for some time, meaning a slightly abrupt end to the show for most. A few braved the rain and were rewarded by a break in the weather, but by then the show was pretty much over. Fortunately, there was enough time earlier in the day to snap plenty of vans still as I even I managed to remember how to work my camera... just. It was a cracking event to kick off the year, roll on Edition 38 and their 20th anniversary show this September. t

MARK SMITH’S T5 We only featured Mark’s T5 a few issues back and it’s already looking very different thanks to a Bad Boy bonnet extension, tinted headlights and some very different wheels - we reckon Mark changes more wheels than our local Kwik-Fit. The current set are a tad posher than the recent Range Rover space savers and come from a Rolls Royce Ghost. Fancy a set? Get ready to part with the best part of £2k, but be happy that you’ll get to marvel in the fact that you now have self-levelling centre caps.

STUART MAY’S T5 Another van that looks very different to last year is Stuart’s stunning T5 – rocking a new Miami Blue paint job thanks to the guys at Paintworx Loughbourgh. We’re glad to see he’s retained the Bentley Mulsanne rims as we love ‘em! Some eagle-eyed readers may also notice he’s a had a fuel flap delete so both sides of this twin-slider panel look super smooth.

As of yet, the date for next year’s Early Edition has not been announced. But fear not, as EE’s big brother Edition 38 will be hitting Overstone Park in Northampton from 3rd September – 5th September. There’ll be camping, two nights of partying with live DJs, the chance to win a car and of course the very best modified Dubs both air and water cooled from all over Europe. The Causeway Coastal Route Known as ‘one of the world’s great road journeys’, the Causeway Coastal Route is 130 miles that winds its way from Belfast to the historic walled city of Derry~Londonderry or vice versa. Through picture-postcard villages, past castles and ancient ruins, the route takes in some of Northern Ireland’s most iconic sights including the Giant’s Causeway, the Carricka-Rede rope bridge and the 400-year-old Bushmills Distillery. In operation since 1608, Bushmills famous single malt whiskey is still produced there today, so why not take a guided tour and grab a bottle for the road, for a nightcap of course! Whilst on route why not check out Ballintoy Harbour, the filming location for the fictional Lordsport in Pyke, one of the Iron Islands in HBO’s Game of Thrones. We can’t guarantee you’ll see Theon Greyjoy, but you’ll definitely get to enjoy plenty of wildlife and some stunning views. Also, check out Portrush and Portstewart, two stunning seaside villages that are both home to iconic golf courses – Portstewart Golf Course and Royal Portrush, home to The Open 2019 and one of the world’s most challenging golf courses – so we’re told. Don’t like hitting balls with a metal pole? Then worry not as the beaches are simply stunning and there’s lots of great places to eat. More info: www.discovernorthernireland.com

3. The Ring of Kerry and Skellig Islands The stunning 111 mile Ring of Kerry is a circular loop around the Iveragh Peninsula passing through some of the most amazing landscapes on the island. The wonderful lakes of Killarney give way to the mountains of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and the peninsula is scattered with picturesque and vibrant towns and villages. Highlights include Moll’s Gap, Torc Waterfall and the Gap of Dunloe. Off the Ring of Kerry lies the sixth-century island monastery of Skellig Michael, now globally famous as Luke Skywalker’s hideaway island in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. If you want to get up close and personal you can take a boat tour around the Unesco World Heritage site or take one of a few landing trips that give the opportunity to climb the 640 steps to the top, go explore and pretend you’re a Jedi. 4. The Sperrin Mountains The Sperrins or Sperrin Mountains, is Northern Ireland’s largest mountain range and is one of the least explored on the island. Despite being one of Ireland’s largest upland areas - it stretches from Strabane in County Tyrone to the shores of Lough Neagh in the east - the Sperrins range is an undiscovered gem – wild, untouched and so beautiful it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The mountains provide habitat for a diverse range of animals including Red Fox, Sika Deer, Pine Marten alongside Peregrine Falcons, Sparrowhawks and even the odd visiting Golden Eagles. You can thank the ice age for the variety of landscapes on offer here. Barnes Gap, Gortin Glen and the beautiful valleys of Owenkillew and Glenelly were all scoured out by ice, leaving behind spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Four spectacular routes in County Tyrone and County Londonderry offer breath taking scenery and ancient monuments galore. National Geographic praised these roads for their “wild beauty, ideal trails and dreamy villages” in its list of the Top 101 Scenic Drives in the World. Trust us, a drive through this roller-coaster landscape is a must and it’ll give you enough Instagram fodder for a year. More info: www.discovertyroneandsperrins.com

5. Ireland’s Ancient East: The Celtic Coast Peel back layers of history as you travel the Celtic Coast route from County Wicklow to County Cork and discover the splendour of eighteenth-century stately homes, the treasures of Viking settlements and the remains of Ireland’s earliest Christian settlement. A must visit is the magnificent Powerscourt House and Gardens, if not for the house but for the Powerscourt Waterfall, set in a glorious valley cradled by the Djouce and the Great Sugar Loaf mountain. Located about 6km away from the main estate, the waterfall is the highest in Ireland at 121m and quite the spectacle. Next is Glendalough (meaning valley of the two lakes) monastic site, one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. Hidden amongst the luscious greenery of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, the monastery founded by St Kevin (yes there was a St Kevin!) in the 6th century became one of the great centres of learning in early Christian Ireland and is one of the crown jewels of Ireland’s Ancient East. Finally don’t miss the city of Waterford, the country’s oldest city. It was founded by Vikings in 914 A.D. and parts of its ancient walled core still remain to this very day. Now, we only recently met Brogan (23), but we know for an absolute, concrete fact that he’s the kind of person who would be described as ‘the salt of the earth.’ How do we know this so emphatically? Well, after being with his girlfriend Georgie for just over two months, her dad (Rob) handed Brogan the keys to his T4 camper and said “why don’t you take Georgie away in it for the weekend and see how you like the van?” Now, I’ve got quite a few mates who are dads to girls and this kind of offer is not one I picture them making too lightly! Of course, it wasn’t completely out of the blue. Rob was selling the van and Brogan showed just a glimmer of interest. That was more than enough for Georgie’s dad who was keen on the ‘99 T4 to remain in the ‘family’ as it had been for sometime - Rob’s brother being the previous owner. Brogan and Georgie have been together for well over two years now and, as you can probably gather, that weekend went pretty well. So well in fact that it convinced Brogan to part company with his beloved MK5 Golf GTi that was lowered and remapped to nearly 300bhp and throw everything into a 20-year-old van with almost 200,000 miles on the clock and 61bhp under the hood. The ebullience is palpable. “I was sold as soon as I got in and turned the key,” admits Brogan. “Not wanting to sound cheesy as hell but honestly, I fell in love with it. I loved the freedom. The fact we could just rock up somewhere and make a cuppa and a bacon roll, or get the bed out and have a nap down by the beach.” Listen, even exuberance needs a rest sometimes. Up until now, the van had remained unmodified save for the camping interior made and fitted by Rob, along with the pop-top roof. “Now me being the guy I am, I like to modify things,” Brogan reveals. “That’s how I stumbled across Lowdown Transporters. I’d seen a few of their

There’s no fancy hydros to see here, Brogan is rolling static Facebook videos over the years, but when I actually looked into what they are, I was sold on the idea of lowering the van. Lowered T4s just look so cool in my eyes.” Brogan set himself the goal of being fully accepted into the Lowdown family by being low enough to run a sticker. “I joined the group on Facebook and asked what’s needed in regard to lowering T4s,” he says. “Everyone was super helpful, and I jumped straight into it! I’ve learned so much since then that I’m able to pass my experience on to new members.” Fortunately, one of Brogan’s old mates, Luke Stevens, had a T4 that was slightly lowered and offered to help him get started. “He showed me the ropes on how to put the new shocks on and how to lower it by winding down the torsion bars,” recalls Brogan. The biggest thing Luke did, however, was point him towards Scarface Lowriders. “He suggested I join their Facebook group and that’s where I found Shane Phillips,” he says. This fusion of ‘exuberant youth’ and ‘skilled suspension craftsman’ was only ever going to end one way - with Brogan’s ‘4 in the weeds of course. “I had made a few changes of my own by this stage,” Brogan points out. The most noticeable being the wood effect laminate floor. “It was originally the same colour as the van,” he says. “There was just a bit too much red going on for me with the units and the pop top as well!” You might also notice that over-

sized shifter. Initially you get the hot rod vibe, but no, this is more about comfort over style. “I’m not the tallest of chaps,” he laughs. “It was becoming a pain leaning over to change gear, so I extended the original gearstick and everyone loves it!” The driving experience itself has shifted from white van man to something far more salubrious thanks to the wooden rimmed, three spoke steering wheel and those rather tasty Scirocco seats looking perfectly at home. “I felt like I needed to check with Matt Brooks

before I put them in,” he laughs! “It was his van I first saw them in and when a pair came up on Facebook at a bargain price, I couldn’t resist. Of course, Matt was cool and said I really didn’t need to ask!” You see what we mean? Salt of the earth. They don’t exactly bolt straight in, but they’re not far off. Brogan’s solution is a 6mm steel bracket fixed to the original bolt location and drilled to match the Scirocco sub frames. “I’d gone so far with shocks and winding the torsion

Working as an apprentice Vehicle Technician at Peugeot in Gloucester, he’s not afraid to admit the van makes a serious dent in that apprenticeship wage, especially when you consider the work that has been done. “The van spent a week at Shane’s place which was tricky as it’s my daily driver, but it was so worth it,” he beams. In that time, Shane installed a freshly fabricated and notched subframe, Scarface shock plates and shortened drop links along with various other notch work to the chassis. The top arms have been skimmed for clearance whilst the rear bump stop has been cut with the front being removed altogether. A set of 3.5” Faulkner springs with Vdub Monkeys limit straps do their best to claw back something akin to a suspension, coupled with GMAX short shocks all round. “I actually had the best time with Shane,” says Brogan. “He showed me exactly what was going on with the chassis notching and things, he’s just a proper cool guy! It has completely changed the van both visually and how it drives. I am so happy with it! I still park it up and look back about fourteen times before I actually leave!” I’ve heard the expression, ‘if you don’t look back at your car at least twice when you’ve parked it, you’ve got the wrong car.’ But

CHEERS We wouldn’t normally dedicate a section just for the ‘thank yous,’ but Brogan has had help and been influenced by so many people that it almost demands it. So, Brogan it’s all you - “The main person that really helped me is my girlfriend’s dad, Rob. If I’m ever stuck with anything or need a hand - which is often - he’s always been a great help. Also, my girlfriend Georgie. She’s the best! The van probably wouldn’t be where it is now without her. Of course, my good friend Luke Stevens for the initial help getting low and Shane Phillips is honestly the nicest bloke going. He is a wizard when it comes to getting T4s low. There’s my best mate Dom Smith, and Jack Matsell. Jack was a massive help for inspiration on lowered vans and helped me out with advice! Finally, my family and friends for supporting me. Especially my mum! She doesn’t understand the lowered lifestyle, but she can appreciate why I do it and she knows it makes me happy.” Drop mic. 74 VWt

SCENE NOT HERD When a Porsche 964 is your first love, but you still require a cool ‘wagen to throw some boxes in, what better than a decked T6.1 to wool the world... Words James Wallace Photography Davy Huygen

W

hat kind of vehicle do Sheep most enjoy driving? A Lamborghini, of course, but when they need to move boxes of wheels, KW, ST and Air Lift suspension gubbins on a regular basis there’s no finer choice than a slammed T6.1 on what many consider to be the most advanced air ride setup to fulfil the Transporter brief. VWt regulars will no doubt recall Kristof Mombaerts’ Cherry Red T6 TSi (VWt 82), this Belgian purveyor of all things ‘wheely good’ has top form with high-end Transporter ownership. In fact as the main man behind Black Sheep Automotive, located in Herk De Stad towards the Eastern tip of Belgium, it’s safe to say that Transporters have become a solid part of his business over the last few years. Whether it’s polishing, powdercoating, suspension or styling the Black Sheep empire has been solid since 2010, surfing the wave of stanced vans along the way. After all, there’s good reason why Rotiforms and air ride have become so popular over the last decade of modifying cars – they get the job done, just like the Transporter in fact Tried and tested that recipe maybe, but it’s a flawless combination, not least because the off-the-shelf market for the T5 and T6 chassis has truly blossomed with the setup perfectly suited to the relaxed, utilitarian, motorway mile munching ability of VW’s box on wheels. When coupled to a brand spankers 2020 facelift T6, one that Kristof specced fresh

from his local dealership, this is now a van that delivers bucketloads of style and comfort with a deceptive turn of pace to boot. “Thing is,” says Kris, “Modifying in Belgium is very different to the UK. Most modifications are outlawed, hence the rise of the ‘cleaned’ phenomenon that has its roots in the austerity of the Euro look rather than decadence. Only certain brands such as AP, ST, KW and H&R are allowed to be fitted to cars due to the paperwork that accompanies them - it’s actually illegal to lower a van here because it’s classed as a utility vehicle.” For Kris though the Rotifom thing began all the way back in 2007 when he had a decked Audi B7 Avant on air, not to mention one of the first sets of BLQ wheels to ever enter Belgium. Alongside his Mk1 Golf G60 that he spent six years perfecting and took to Edition 38 back in the day, his car past is prolific to say the least. So, having worked his way through a stunning Amethyst Porsche 964 – a car he still owns and is currently undertaking a full engine rebuild, a couple of RS 4s and a Mk7.5 GTi TCR, eventually he landed upon the expediency of VW’s commercial segment. A couple of slammed Caddys later and he soon realised that the load space simply wasn’t up to scratch, “They were just too small for my deliveries, I needed something bigger.” A Pure Grey T6 entered the fold for a couple of years before making way for the fully pimped, LWB Cherry Red offering. When a customer

TOP MOD: VIRTUAL COCKPIT Although specced from the factory like this. VWs incredible virtual cockpit is now offered as a retro fit upgrade from Vanworx on the south coast of the UK. A combination of uprated dash surround and the Discover Pro 9.2 inch head unit this most lavish of integrated tech offers multiple digital screens in the same way as a stalk mounted MFA provides different dash info. Allowing all sort of systems, parameters and sensors, including a full colour sat nav display, to be visible right in front of you. Think Audi R8 meets van and you’re on the right track.

asked if they could buy that van, Kris jumped at the chance, leaving a sizable hole in the Mombaerts garage. “I loved the new Audi C8 A6 so much and told myself (liar liar!) that if I could run that as a demo car and buy a Caddy, everything would be ok. It wasn’t,” laughed Kris. That was in November 2019 - ABP suspension, forged Rotis, a few Accuair bits it was a superb car. I had it done just in time for Ultimate Dubs 2020. Who knew that show would be our season opener and closer! I also bought a secondhand Caddy, threw it down on ST suspension and 19’’ Rotiform CVTs and I was sorted... I thought.” Very quickly Kristof discovered the Caddy was indeed too small, and as the business is on the side of his house, the Audi wasn’t getting driven either. So, in April 2020, Kris placed his order for the brand spankers Ascot Grey T6.1 you see here that was delivered in October 2020, just before the second Belgian lockdown. The

super subtle hue made for a subtle sleeper look from the get go. By ticking plenty of the options on the order sheet for this T32 LWB 204PS Bi TDi bruiser, Kris was already driving smoother than the late Barry White in silk pyjamas at a Cadillac convention. With the desirable twin-slider and full glass pack option, simple changes like gloss black plastics and a Travelinlite front splitter really boost the aggression of the pointy end, lending it the rear view mirror presence of, ‘I wonder if that’s as fast as it looks.’ Because, as we know, there’s not much that gets in the way of a determined van in the fast lane. Luckily LED headlamps permit a full beam that mere mortal motorists cannot ignore, so there’s plenty of scope to urge lane-hoggers elsewhere. With parking sensors front and rear, heated seats and mirrors, full virtual cockpit display and air con this is a very comfortable place to smash the miles. While the seats

Air Lift’s 3P management can be controlled by your phone... so cool! remain in the factory Titanium Black colour, the Highline spec means it’s certainly not lacking in toys - furthering the creature comforts is the big upgrade to a 9.2-inch Discover Media Pro touchscreen complete with WeConnect functionality and the DAB+ radio option for all round entertainment and audio excellence, controlled naturally by a multi-function steering wheel. Miraculously for a van, VWs fatigue detection function operates above 65km/h to monitor inputs such as throttle, head movements and steering inputs to determine concentration levels. It then throws up a coffee cup on the dash with an accompanying acoustic warning every 15 minutes until you get sick of it and probably have it disabled in VAG COM one day. There’s no denying it was already a brilliant drive direct from the factory, but Kris wasn’t happy with either the stance or road presence of the subtle style, “It desperately needed some suspension tweaks and new rims to give it some attitude,” Kris confessed. Having built up quite a rapport with Luke Massy from Plush Automotive over the years, there was only ever one option for Kris, “We’ve run ABP suspension on our vehicles for years and it’s truly something special. I first ran my Pure Grey T6 on H&R Deep coilovers, but switching to ABP was a revelation. It’s our favourite suspension to be honest - it rides so comfortably and goes so low. Once you’ve driven on it it’s hard to go back to anything else.” Of course, this uppity up, downity down suspension has a massive aesthetic benefit when stood still, but the quality of the Bilstein

based ABP air struts up front and Contitech bags out back make the system far more than just a static show pony, this thing rides and handles with a genuine sporting purpose. Sure, that sounds like utter marketing waffle and something only those who sell it spout as some kind of non sensical PR blurb, but it needs to be experienced to be believed. It might not have the same exacting composure and harshness that coilovers exhibit for 100+mph sweepers

and slip roads, but hey… this is a van we’re talking about after all. A duo of 3-gallon tanks now nestle beneath the van to keep the twin Viair compressor noise at bay and the system is controlled via Air Lift’s industry leading pressure based 3P management, complete with 8 valve manifold block, iPhone app and dash mounted controller. Ride presets enable three heights to be selected at the push of a button, and the system airs up automatically We featured Black Sheep Auto’s T6 back in issue 82

Everything is on offer from alloy wheels, lowered suspensions, tyres, rim repair, polishing, compaction and powder coating services and so much more! I better not sell this next one so quickly! It’s crazy to see how he loves cars and especially Transporters so much! It’s going to be ‘his blue bus’. TAROX F2000 discs and Strada pads, the perfect combination Spence at The Old Dub Shop gets to work

TAROX sure do make some sexy looking stopperes

Glenn’s T5.1 LWB The T5.1 gets some top stoppers from TAROX...

I

f you saw last month’s issue, you’ll know my month was mainly made up of driving, dealing with house renovations and breaking things on my ‘5.1. Well this month was a lot better, as it started off with a special delivery from TAROX - a set of gorgeous F2000 308mm curved groove discs and some Strada pads. And, I was so excited to get ‘em on the van, I booked myself in with Spencer at The Old Dub Shop pretty much immediately. Many people may think what’s the point in fitting performance brakes to a big ol’ van, but other than making you stop quicker and more efficiently it also makes you real-world faster. The sooner you’re done on the stoppers the sooner you can get the pedal to the metal, so the quicker or later you can brake, the more time you’ll be spending accelerating. And let’s face it, sometimes it can take a while to get these big slabs of metal up to speed so any time saved is a god send. Obviously, there’s plenty of choice out there, but like tyres, when it comes to brakes you want to go with a brand you’ve heard of and can trust. Yes, there’s cheaper brands than TAROX, but they’re not better brands. There’s a reason you’ll see TAROX on most of the top builds, because their established, trusted and well tested. Think about it, a decent set of pads and discs is a lot

82 VWt

cheaper than sticking your van in a ditch. Also, fitting uprated brakes is as easy as fitting standard jobbies, as performance discs and pads are identical in size, so it would be silly not to. Fitting wise there’s not too much to talk about, as Spencer and Myles at The Old Dub Shop had the gear fitted and tested in just over a few hours. It was like watching an F1 pit crew at work - albeit without the posh race suits and a few more tattoos - yep, it’s fair to say these guys know their way around a Transporter. There were no problems with things seizing and everything in the TAROX kit fitted perfectly as you’d expect. So thanks to the guys at The Old Dub Shop! If you’re in the South West and need some work on your VW check them out, as they’re more than just a shop they’re proper VW guys and have built some stunning vehicles over the years, including Spencer’s ’67 Beetle that was a Volksworld cover star a few months back. So, then, the brakes. As I write this, a few weeks and many miles including a long drive down to Goodwood for Players Classic have passed and the Strada pads and 308mm F2000 discs are well bedded in. Already, the difference in braking is amazing. Agreed, my T5.1 is no Ferrari speed-wise, but she weighs over two tonnes, so

VW T5.1 LWB PANEL VAN Owned since July 2020 Mileage: 195k

that’s a lot of van to stop. The grooved discs dissipate the heat perfectly, whilst the Strada high performance fast road pads feel like they have pretty much halved my stopping distance. Even from cold the brakes bite superbly, which my stock units certainly didn’t. In fact, they have already saved me from nearly having a crash on a local roundabout (that wasn’t my fault, may I add!). So they’ve definitely passed the test! It’s just a shame they’re currently hidden up behind the steel wheels, but hey brakes are for stops not looks. Anyway, that’s enough from me. See you next month. t

Working on the van in ASDA on a bank holiday evening, great!

Andrew’s T5.1 LWB Damn, I need to watch what I say… last month’s update came back to bite me!

I

’ve had the most amazing month getting out in the van and attending different events all over the place, but it very nearly all came to an abrupt end this month! I spent the bank holiday weekend at Rivo’s Hub in Poole for a couple of events. Monday evening I headed to the shops to pick up some supplies and when I jumped back in the van to set off the steering felt very heavy and the battery light was also on. I turned off the van as quickly as possible and then started to investigate, I soon noticed the aux belt had snapped. I was incredibly lucky though, because it was a super clean snap and came straight off, whereas it seems like it’s common for them to tear and then get caught in the cambelt! I had a few tools with me, but it was late on Bank Holiday Monday evening so I couldn’t get a belt until the following morning. The van is set up at a height where I can still get a low entry jack under it if I need to - I’m trying to keep the van as practical as possible whilst also being lowered. I may give in soon and get it bagged, with my luck with this belt snapping so clean maybe I should have done the lottery that night. I gave Richie from Rivo’s Hub the news that I may be a little later than expected the following day. A few messages went back and forth and the following morning I was waiting for an Uber to arrive to then do a 40-minute round trip to Euro Car Parts - who knows how long it would take me to fit the damn thing on the floor in 84 VWt

the ASDA car park. Anyway, the next thing I knew I was with Paul from VAS Works Ltd, a VAG specialist in Poole. Over the weekend Paul had been at Rivo’s in his Splitscreen bus and somehow managed to fit me in first thing on a Tuesday after a bank holiday weekend. Paul and his guys didn’t have any ramps free, so instead they jacked up the van in the entrance of their workshop and rolled around on the floor to get the new belt on and they did it in no time at all – I cannot thank these guys enough! My options the night before and that morning were not looking good, but these cool VW guys stepped in and saved the day. I love the Volkswagen community! Oh and Paul has a 400bhp T6… So, if you are looking for someone to work on your Transporter be sure to take a look at VAS Works - Dorset’s leading independent VW Audi specialists. Based just outside Poole, VAS Works offer the complete package for maintaining your vehicle. From servicing, MoT’s, diagnosis, and fault finding to performance upgrades including suspension, exhausts and remaps. Check them out on social media at @VASWorks / @vas_works. And, if you’re looking for an independent car crazy caffeine fix be sure to check out Rivo’s Hub in Poole – Richie and Lau have created an incredible space with lots of parking and endless cool motors rolling through, it’s well worth a visit! You can find them on @rivoshub on IG.

VWt YOUR VANS

YOUR VANS

Your world, your life, your vans…

Send us yours: Ever dreamed about seeing your van appear in the pages of VWt? Make that dream a reality! Simply e-mail a selection of good quality high-res images of your van to glenn.rowswell@kelsey.co.uk along with a full spec list and add the subject title ‘Your Vans’. But please remember, if you didn’t take the photos, you MUST have permission from the photographer to use the images in the magazine, and all images should be free from watermarks (by submitting an image you assume responsibility for any copyright infringement). So, what are you waiting for? Let’s see those project builds! t

ASHLEY EDWARDS’ 2016 T6, Shropshire Hey VWt, here’s my 2016 VW T6 T32. I wanted a Transporter for years and years, especially since it looks like we won’t be going abroad any time soon. So, I bought this van aka ‘Wanda the Wonderbus’ in March 2021 from Custom Transporters in Wolverhampton. Before this I’d owned a fair few Minis, I started off with a classic Mayfair and raced Vauxhall converted space frame Mini Clubmans, I then had a few newer Minis. My grandad was a Mini mechanic and racer, so it ran in the family... however, I have now moved to the dark side ha-ha. As I say I’d wanted a Transporter for a long time, there’s just nothing quite as cool on the road in my eyes. The biggest challenge with the build has been fitting everything I want in and keeping it tidy enough to spend time in comfortably, especially what with it being a SWB. 88 VWt

I love the feeling of freedom, being out on the road and also being able to just stop anywhere and relax for the night. Also how bad arse it looks as well. I had a great weekend recently in Stratford with the Mrs and got pulled over randomly by a guy called Sam Smith (not the singer) who is another Dub guy and he showed us a beautiful little village where he took some ace impromptu photos, see included. Eventually I want it bagged and mapped, I think once I’ve fitted a Retro Rack on the roof, I will be happy with the exterior. For now anyway... VWt YOUR VANS

ARRON WIKES’ 2017 T6, West Yorkshire Hey VWt, please see some info and photos of my self-built 2017 VW T6 T30 that my family have owned since Feb 2021. We used to own a Vauxhall Vivaro, but wanted to join the VW scene, as it’s a lot cooler and more fun. Exterior mods include 20” alloys, black side and roof bars, a Sportline kit, pop top, a bonnet bra and it’s been lowered 40mm. Most of the work has been on the interior, which includes a rock & roll bed, Bentley style stitch roof, 100mm insulation and sound deadening, mains hook-up with mains board, 1200w inverter, a gas hob, sink and tap. There’s also a diesel heater, a Smad 40L fridge and a white high-gloss kitchen with black trim. The biggest challenge to date was fitting the front swivel seat, but it all went well and works a treat now. Our first trip in the van was fishing when the lockdown restrictions were lifted and we’ve been to Northumberland, the Lake District, Harrogate, Filey and Dubbed Out last

month. In the future we plan to go traveling, go on fishing trips and have lots of adventures with the family. Plus, we just turned a nice trailer into a food fired oven for pizzas so will be busy at camper events this summer. Instagram: @wikescamper Top mods: 20” alloys, Sportline kit, white high-gloss kitchen Future plans: Just lots of adventures with my family and some fishing trips
