KICKOFF 2017

Victoria East looks to repeat recent success BY REY CASTILLO

RCASTILLO@VICAD.COM

Victoria East closed out last season by winning seven of its final eight games, leading it to the Class 5A, Division II quarterfinal. Despite losing 26 players to graduation, senior quarterback Grant Baker believes the Titans have what it takes to repeat last year ’s success. “We did lose a lot of seniors, but it’s time to move on to the next level,” Baker said. “It gives our young guys an opportunity to show their talents, and it gives them a chance to do their best. The more we play together and work together; we will figure each other out.” Baker takes over an offense that averaged 39.1 points per game a season ago. “I just want to motivate the team as we go along,” Baker said. “Always be encouraging and do positive things that will bring the team together, especially when adversity hits. The thing to do is be positive and do the best we can in any situation.” The Titans will return nine starters from last season, including running back Brandon Tumlinson. Tumlinson is coming off a career-high 1,321 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns. “We knew we needed to get in better shape,” Tumlinson said. “But I expect us to go far this season.” During the offseason, former defensive coordinator John Lackey rejoined the Titans. Lackey, who spent three and a half seasons at East before taking the head coaching position at Lubbock Trinity Christian, returned to the program in April. “He came in and told us that he’s not going to change a lot because he liked what we were doing,” said senior defensive end Malakye Adams. “He’s tweaked a few things, but nothing’s really changed.” Adams is another player the Titans are looking to for guidance on the defensive line. Adams, who finished with 23 tackles and six sacks last season, will transition to defensive end after playing defensive tackle the past two years. “I have to play faster and we just have to play hard,” Adams said. “If we keep playing hard and recognize the talent and hard work we have, we will be able to do great things.” The Titans got their first look at the newly assembled District 27-5A last season. Sixth-year coach Roland Gonzalez is

Traugott will move to the defensive side of the football to play cornerback. Although he will continue to be the kicker, Traugott admitted he’s excited for the opportunity to play defense. “It’s definitely a new experience,” said Traugott, who played safety last season against Calhoun. “I went two years of just kicking; now being on the field with the defense is going to be fun. I’m going to enjoy it.” Despite the Titans’ reputation for scoring the football early and often, Gonzalez expects a big season from the Titans’ defense. “We feel like these players are going to contribute heavily on the offensive side of the ball,” Gonzalez said. “But I believe the strength of this team is going to be our defense with the return of experienced players.” The defense wants to show it can stand up to the competition.

“We switched districts, and people said East couldn’t hang with the Houston teams,” Traugott added. “We ended up

Victoria West eager to get back into playoffs BY MARCUS GUTIERREZ MGUTIERREZ@VICAD.COM

Victoria West had a two-year playoff streak snapped last season. To earn another berth in the postseason, the Warriors know it’s going to take a lot of hard work at practice to get back in the postseason. “It’s a new year,” said junior starting quarterback Jordan Fillmore. “This year, we are going to have the mindset to get in the playoffs. We have to practice hard, have a great mentality at practice and just work hard – and we will see the results.” The Warriors look to improve from a 4-6 overall record and a 2-4 record in District 27-5A play. “The expectation is to make the playoffs,” said Courtney Boyce, who will begin his second season as the Warriors’ head coach. “We have to be physically and mentally tough. Every game is going to be extremely difficult, and we are going to play a lot of talented teams.” The Warriors will not start the season with Fillmore or senior running back Chayce Grevey, but both are expected to be back at some point during the season. Both have been limited in practice since fall camp started. Fillmore is recovering from a leg injury, while Grevey is recovering from a hip injury. Last season, the Warriors relied on a solid running game that rushed for 2,276 yards with 1,006 of those yards coming from Grevey. “We rushed for a lot of yards last year, and we want to do it again this year,” said senior Brycen Castillo, who is the only returning offensive lineman. “I tell the guys, ‘Just be confident on the field, and play hard.’ We were disappointed that we didn’t make the playoffs last year, and now that’s where we want to go this season.” Steven Brandt is back on the defensive line to help the Warriors. Last season, the Warriors’ defense forced a total of 25 turnovers and had 15 sacks. Brandt, a three-year letterman, wants the defense to keep getting turnovers this season. “We just want to be physical and aggressive on defense,” Brandt said. “If we go full speed during practice, it will transition to the games, and that’s what we need to do.” This year’s Warriors team is building its own identity. “I don’t think we will be the same team as last year,” Boyce said. “We’re going to

ANGELA PIAZZA/APIAZZA@VICAD.COM

be a different team this year, and we’re still figuring out what team we’re going to be this season. We’re going to execute a plan and make sure that our kids know it well.” Boyce will look to his 23 seniors to set the example for the underclassmen this season. “Senior leadership is non-negotiable,” Boyce said. “Before you can become a leader, you have to serve. They just don’t tell you what to do, but they lead by example at practice and perform on Friday nights.” The Warriors’ road back to the playoffs will go through District 27-5A. In the district’s second year of existence, the Warriors will battle again with Richmond Foster, Rosenberg Terry, Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated, Angleton, Calhoun and crosstown rival Victoria East. “They ’re as good as everyone talks about them,” Boyce said. “It was a tough district last year, and you have to bring it every night.”

Mike Hall is ready for his next go-round at the healm of St. Joseph. The second-year coach likes what he’s seen so far from the Flyers, especially during the team’s first scrimmage against Van Vleck. “We still have a lot of work to do, but overall, I was surprised with what I saw against a good Van Vleck squad,” Hall said. “Right off the bat, we had Jacob Bordovsky, who executed well and took control at the quarterback spot. The offensive line wasn’t bad either.” Bordovsky, who played safety on defense last season, is preparing for his first season under center. “I think we’re still progressing every day, and we’re getting better every practice,” Bordovsky said. “We all get a long together, and we’ve been a solid team together as a family. Coach Hall is teaching us unity – to play hard and play together.”

Izac Canchola, who was uncertain about playing football this season, will return for his junior year. Canchola’s grandmother, who passed away during the offseason, was more than enough motivation for his return. “My grandma is the reason I decided to come back,” the outside linebacker said. “Whenever times get tough this season, I’m going to keep playing for her.” Canchola rejoins a Flyers team that finished with four wins last season and one in TAPPS Division II, District 4. “We’re a young team,” Canchola said. “This team is young, and we don’t have many starters coming back. We’re looking to put in the work we need to for the season, and I can’t wait to get started.” The Flyers will be without 13 seniors from last year, but players aren’t letting that be an excuse. Instead, they’re using it as a chance to expand their game. “It feels like it’s going to be a fun season

with new players,” said junior running back Payton Terrell. “I’m feeling confident about the season.” Terrell, who is entering his second season on varsity, is hoping the Flyers can take advantage of district opponents losing players to graduation.

“They were good competition, but I know a lot of teams are losing stars,” Terrell said. “It’s a process right now for teams to build around different players and us trying to figure that out and realzing what we have to do to win.”

Victoria East’s first appearance in the Class 5A, Division II quarterfinals was a journey. It was the tough competition in District 27-5A – which includes crosstown rival Victoria West, as well as Calhoun, Angleton and the Richmond and Rosenberg – schools that prepared the Titans for the long road in the playoffs. West came from behind to defeat Calhoun and closed out last season with a win over Lamar Consolidated. “We knew last year going into the new district that it was going to be tough,” said West coach Courtney Boyce. “It’s going to

be another tough year in our district, and I think our guys are ready for this year. We just have to go out and play hard every Friday night because it’s going to be a challenge each game.” Calhoun only won one district game, and ball security hurt the Sandcrabs. The Sandcrabs are looking for more success in district play this season. “We’re probably the most least athletic group in the district,” said Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker. “Our guys are going to go out there and play their hardest, and I always know that they will. We just can’t make any mistakes with the type of offense we run.”

Refugio hopes similar move leads to same result

BY MIKE FORMAN

MFORMAN@VICAD.COM

REFUGIO – Less than a month after winning the Class 2A, Division I state championship, Refugio coach Jason Herring told Jacobe Avery he was moving from quarterback to running back. Avery was named the offensive MVP of the state final after leading the Bobcats to a 23-20 win over Crawford. But Avery didn’t bat an eye and immediately went to work in the offseason preparing for what he hopes will be another state title run. “He asked me if I was ready to be a running back,” Avery said. “I told him, ‘Whatever you give me, I’m ready for.’” Herring’s decision to move Avery back to running back for his senior season and insert sophomore Jared Kelley as the starting quarterback wasn’t made lightly. But Herring felt it gives the Bobcats their best shot at winning their third state championship in seven years. “I just sat down and talked with Jacobe and explained to him why I was doing it and what I was going to do, how I was still going to use him some at quarterback,” Herring said. “But I thought the best thing for the team was for Jared to be the quarterback and him to be our tailback.” Herring’s decision was based on the talent and potential of the strong-armed Kelley, who was an all-state pitcher on Refugio’s baseball team that advanced to the regional semifinals. But the move wouldn’t have been possible without the acceptance of Avery, who will still play outside linebacker and take snaps in the Bobcats’ Wildcat formation. “It didn’t take two seconds, and Jacobe said, ‘Heck yeah,’” Herring said. “Jacobe just wants to play, and he wants to win and he wants to win it all. He’s a fierce, fierce competitor, and he’s a great athlete.” The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Kelley made two starts at quarterback last season. He worked at the position during the offseason and in summer 7-on-7 games. “Last year, I was getting into it,” Kelley said. “This year, I should be good. In the beginning, it was a little difficult learning the offense. Since I got a grasp of it last season, I’ve got it good this season.” Refugio offensive coordinator Cameron Cox expects Kelley to grow into a position that has been occupied by Avery, Jaylon Mascorro and Travis Quintanilla, who all led the Bobcats to the state final. “The biggest thing Jared needs to do is to

continue to play confident,” Cox said. “So far in fall camp, he’s been extremely confident. I haven’t seen him play like he has been doing ever. “We’ve always said if he ever gets the confidence, kind of that moxie, that swag, he’ll be one of the best that we’ve had through here.” Herring has adjusted the offense to fit Kelley ’s skills, and to take advantage of running backs Avery, Ysidro Mascorro and Daryon Ramirez. “When we had Travis at quarterback, we slung it all over the field,” Herring said. “Last year, we were pounding the rock. We’re going to be right dab in the middle of those. We’re not going to sling it as much as we did four years ago, but we’re not going to be so reliant on just pounding it. I would say we’ll be more wide open than last year, but we’re still going to pound the rock.” Kelley has worked hard to prepare, and he won’t hesitate to ask Avery for advice. “He’s helping me back there,” Kelley said. “He’s been through it already for three years, and that will help me out.” Avery ’s message to Kelley is to play and have trust in his coaches and teammates. “I tell him every day to just chill and relax and read the card,” Avery said. “I tell him to just calm down and read the offense and he’ll do fine.” Herring’s decision to move Avery to running back and Kelley to quarterback is similar to last season when Avery took over at quarterback and Mascorro went to running back. The move led to Refugio’s fourth state championship, and Herring is hoping for similar results this season. “When I saw Jared Kelley in junior high, I knew,” Herring said. “Just like I knew with Quintanilla that he could be real special. There is no question in my mind we will be a better football team overall. “I think that’s what coaches should do,” he added. “Whatever talent you have, you have to maximize it. To me, that’s the perfect skinning of the cat this year.”

PORT LAVACA – There will be a youth movement at Calhoun this season. The Sandcrabs will be leaning on underclassmen when the season opens. “We’re starting about six or seven seniors right now,” said head coach Richard Whitaker, who is heading into his 13th year with the Sandcrabs. “We have a lot of young kids right now. When you have young kids, you don’t have the experience you would have if you had 20 seniors on the field. It’s going to take some time for them to get experience on Friday night and to adjust to the speed of the game.” Calhoun finished last season 3-7 overall

with a 1-5 record in District 27-5A and missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. The Sandcrabs had trouble with ball security and fumbled 47 times last season and lost 25 of them. “You can’t expect to fumble the football and make the playoffs with the schedule that you’re playing,” Whitaker said. “We have worked on our ball security in the spring and in camp, and I have seen improvement. We just need to take care of the football. “You have to play near perfect football every game to give us a chance,” he added. “We have to have long drives that end in touchdowns.” Senior quarterback Marshal Batts will

be the starter for Calhoun, but Connor Kestler will also see time under center in the Sandcrabs option offense. “It’s a huge responsibility to be the quarterback on this team,” Batts said. “It’s tough in this type of offense because you have to make quick decisions.” The Sandcrabs have first team Class 5A all-state fullback senior Jesse Lopez on their side. “We just have to focus as a team,” Lopez said. “We have a lot of young talent, and it’s our job as seniors to show them how to get better. We know last season we had a lot of fumbles on offense, and we have been working on taking care of the ball a lot.” The Sandcrabs will be looking to improve

in district play. “We have had familiarity with the teams in our district,” Whitaker said. “We were with the Rosenberg schools and Angleton in our previous district before and we have played Victoria East and Victoria West. We don’t feel like we are seeing anything new in the district. Junior linebacker Sylias Montgomery is ready to lead the Sandcrabs defense. “As a defense we want to be physical,” Montgomery said. “We have been working hard through camp and listen to our coaches every day so that we can become better.”

No shortage of talent in competitive district GANADO INDIANS

BY MIKE FORMAN

Weimar returns a majority of starters from last year’s playoff team and has been picked to finish fourth in a number of preseason polls. “We think we’ve got some talented football players,” said Weimar coach David Husmann. “When you’re picked fourth and you got a good bunch of players, then the district must be pretty talented, and it is.” Refugio has a number of starters back from its state championship team, and the Bobcats go into the season ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A preseason poll. “I know for a fact that Weimar will be as talented as anybody we play,” said Refugio coach Jason Herring. “Shiner ’s going to be the best coached, most physical team, and they’re going to do everything right. I think Yorktown was one of the most talented teams last year. This is the coach’s second year. He’s had a full year with his offseason. I really think the four teams who come out of this district are going to be dang salty.” Yorktown finished third last season and has experience at the skill positions. “We’re ahead of where we were last year,” said Yorktown coach John David Caffey. “We have some seniors who have started since they were freshmen. Depth, returning starters a plus in Goliad’s hunt for outright district title BY MIKE FORMAN

MFORMAN@VICAD.COM

Goliad was happy to win a District 15-3A, Division I championship last season. But the Tigers would prefer not to share the title this season. Goliad, George West and Mathis were tri-champions after beating each other last year. The Tigers got the top seed in the playoffs based on points but hope to avoid a similar scenario this season. “I think our team staying healthy, the team clicking and team chemistry are

the biggest part,” said Goliad coach Bobby Nicholson. Nicholson expects another challenge from George West, which is coached by former Yoakum coach Brent Kornegay, and Mathis, which beat Goliad last season. “George West is going to be good,” he said. “This is Brent’s third year with the system. Mathis lost its running back. But Mathis runs the slot-T, and you don’t see that a lot around here. It should be just as competitive as it was last year.” Nicholson took over as head coach in

May of 2016 and went into last season with only three days of offseason workouts. He expects the Tigers to be better prepared to make a run at their first outright district title since 2014. “The best part about us this year is we’re really, really deep at our skill positions,” Nicholson said. “We got a look at a lot of people in our scrimmages. At this level, if you can stay fresh for four quarters, you can do good things. I think the depth we have at our skill positions and the returning starters we have up front can really help us.”

Old rivalry takes on new meaning BY MIKE FORMAN

MFORMAN@VICAD.COM

Yoakum did something last season that Hallettsville has never done. The Bulldogs advanced to the state final for the first time since 1952, and they had to beat the Brahmas to get there. “We saw how they went to state last year,” said Hallettsville linebacker Jaxon Reeves. “They ’re in our district. It’s between them and us. They can stop us from going far or they can be the ones who allow us to get there.” Hallettsville and Yoakum have played 72 times, which is not surprising for schools located in cities less than 20 miles apart. The Brahmas lead the overall series 37-34-1. But the rivalry took on added importance and intensity last season when Yoakum dropped from Class 4A to 3A and landed in District 14-3A, Division I with Hallettsville. “When I got here, I think the rivalry for Yoakum was more Cuero,” said Yoakum coach Bo Robinson. “When we got put in their district last year and playing them twice made that more of a rivalry just because it means more.” The Brahmas won the first meeting 35-28 in Yoakum and went on to win the district championship. The teams met again in the quarterfinals and the Bulldogs prevailed 27-23, denying Hallettsville a shot at its first semifinal appearance since 1976. “Things happen for a reason,” said Hallettsville quarterback DJ Taylor. “We worked hard in the offseason. We’re just as talented, and we have a great coach on our team.” Hallettsville coach Tommy Psencik was a longtime assistant for the Bulldogs. He was Yoakum’s head coach in 2006 and is familiar with the rivalry and the communities. “I think Yoakum and Hallettsville are similar in the fact they have a lot of country boys, a lot of kinfolks are shared between the towns, and there a lot of friendships between the towns,” Psencik said. “There’s quite a bit difference in the size of the towns (6,019 in Yoakum, 2,585 in Hallettsville), and the size of the schools as well (431.5 average daily attendance at Yoakum, 346 at Hallettsville).” A majority of the players on both teams grew up playing with or against each other in a number of sports. “It’s different because it’s small-town competition,” said Hallettsville running back Scooter Adams. “We’ve been playing each other since we were little. It’s always fun to play teams down the road.” “We’re both in the same district,” added Yoakum receiver Josh Moore. “We both want to come out and show who’s the better team. We’ll be prepared.” “It’s a good experience for us,” Taylor agreed. “It’s a big game, and it brings a lot of fans out to watch us.” The teams are aware the first meeting may not be the last again this season. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in The Associated Press’ Class 3A preseason poll, and Brahmas, ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll, would welcome the opportunity for a playoff rematch. “They were definitely the most intense games and the biggest games,” Reeves said. “They ’re great competitors.” “We would love to play them twice again this year because that would mean we’re three or four deep in the playoffs,” Bo Robinson said. “They ’re definitely a worthy opponent. We played some really good teams last year and overall they were really good.”

Flatonia, Falls City should compete for district title

BY MARCUS GUTIERREZ

MGUTIERREZ@VICAD.COM

Flatonia head coach Chris Freytag credits the Bulldogs’ deep run to the regional to competing in a tough District 15-2A, Division II district. “We lost a lot of key players from last year,” said Freytag, whose Bulldogs won the district title. “It’s our goal to win district. We want to make sure that we are playing our best football in district, then make the playoffs and win as many gold football’s as we can.” The Bulldogs will welcome running back Lucas Herrera and three-year starter offensive lineman Shane Templeton. Falls City will be looking to compete for the top spot in district. “Flatonia edged us out last year in a tough game and that’s how I expect it to be this year,” said Falls City coach Britt Hart. “Everyone in our district is better, and it’s going to be a tough district.” Dual-threat junior quarterback Keyshawn Johnson is back along with all-state senior offensive lineman Trace Labus. Louise made the playoffs under first year head coach Heath Clawson after finishing 3-8 overall and 3-2 in district play for the Beavers. “The big difference now is that we have had a full year to be with our players,” Clawson said. “There’s not an easy win in this district and you have to play hard every week.” Junior quarterback Collin Gonzles, who has 21 touchdowns, is back to lead the Hornets offense. Runge second year head coach Kyle Blalock wants to see the Yellow Jackets perform on the field on Friday nights. Junior running back Justice Guerrero is ready to carry the load for the Hornets. “My expectation is to see the team compete,” Blalock said. “We have some tough kids, and we have taught them how to win.”

Eagles looking to fly high under new coach BY MARCUS GUTIERREZ MGUTIERREZ@VICAD.COM

Woodsboro’s first year head coach Xavier Rangel and his team’s goals this season are simple. “Our goal is to win and make the playoffs,” said Rangel, who spent the last two seasons as the Plainview defensive coordinator. “Our players came in for summer workouts, and that really helped a lot. They have been doing a good job at camp competing with one another and really becoming a team.” The Eagles finished last season with a 3-8 overall record and went 1-3 in District 16-2A, Division II to make the playoffs. Rangel is showing the Eagles how he wants to build his culture at Woodsboro. “It’s a learning curve so far,” Rangel said. “Our players are learning a new offense, defense, and have been working

Bloomington hopes to end playoff drought BY REY CASTILLO

RCASTILLO@VICAD.COM

Bloomington coach Adam Arroyo is pleased with what he’s seen since the start of summer workouts. The question for the Bobcats will be if the team has what it takes to end an 18-year playoff drought. The Bobcats, who finished 1-9 last season and 0-6 in District 14-3A, Division II will run a 4-2-5 defense behind Deidrick Miller and wide receiver/safety Sebastian Castro. Miller was sidelined last season after suffering a knee injury. The team will also look to second-year senior quarterback Rene Rodriguez to run a spread offense without star running back Demarcus Bryant, who graduated. “Our district is really competitive,” Arroyo said. “If we can eliminate turnovers and the big play, we’re going to be fine. We’re looking for a playoff spot.” Tidehaven coach David Lucio is expecting big things from senior quarterback Bryce Galvan. “We expect him to have a come out year,” Lucio said. “He’s the best arm I’ve ever coached.” The Tigers, who fell to Odem in the area round last season, are coming off a

Jerry Long is new to District 14-3A, Division I, but he knew what to expect when he came to Edna from Corpus Christi Carroll. “I’d say it’s the toughest district in Region IV,” Long said. “Look at what Yoakum was able to do last year. Fortunately, coming from East Bernard, I’m familiar with those coaches and their programs.” Yoakum advanced to the state final as the third seed, but not before defeating district champion Hallettsville in the quarterfinals. “That’s kind of what I was hoping for in realignment was to get to go east and be in this district,” said Yoakum coach Bo Robinson. “Your district is going to be tough, but you don’t have to play them in the first or second round of the playoffs. It turned out our district was tough. Rice was better, Hallettsville was good, Edna at times was good, Van Vleck had as good of skill kids as anybody. There’s a lot of talent in this district. There are good coaches. The district got us ready for our run in the playoffs.” Van Vleck looked like it would be the district’s fourth seed, but the Leopards were knocked out of playoff contention when

Rice Consolidated was forced to forfeit its win over Edna for using an ineligible player. “That’s kind of a motivating factor for us,” said Van Vleck coach Robert Blackmon. “Last year was very unfortunate. I felt our kids should have gotten in. But things happen. We have a chance to overcome adversity and move forward, and we know we can’t leave anything up to anyone else.” Hallettsville went undefeated en route to the district championship and begins the season ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A preseason poll. Yoakum enters the season ranked No. 6. “Yoakum has dropped down and that’s always going to make you more competitive,” said Hallettsville coach Tommy Psencik. “But I think definitely you have to look at Edna. Rice is never a pushover, Industrial is much improved, Van Vleck has always got a lot of speed and athletes. It’s a strong little district.” The district’s strength was borne out in the playoffs with Edna going two rounds, Rice Consolidated going three, Hallettsville going four and Yoakum going six. “Playing in this district gets you ready for the playoffs, it really does,” Psencik said. “There’s a lot of good athletes in our area. When you go week-in, week-out playing people that have pretty decent athletes, you’re going to get better.”

Mustangs, Badgers prepared for new season

BY REY CASTILLO

Nixon-Smiley coach Carlton McKinney expects another playoff run for the Mustangs, who finished fourth last season in District 15-3A, Division II. “Expectations are high,” said McKinney, who is entering his eighth season as head coach. “This year we have high expectations with our guys continuing to work hard. If we can stay healthy, we

have an opportunity to do what we did last season.” The Mustangs, who finished 6-6 overall and 3-2 in district last season will rely on a heavy senior class in 2017. El Campo hopes to repeat. Bay City looks to make up for lost ground. The Ricebirds will attempt to defend their District 12-4A, Division I championship. The Blackcats will go after their first district crown since they shared the title with Richmond Foster in 2004. Neither expects the road to the title to be an easy one. “There’s a lot of experience coming back in our district,” said El Campo coach Wayne Condra. “When you look at it, Stafford has got all its skill positions coming back, Needville is really coming on, Columbia, Brazosport and Sealy should be better. It’s going to be tough each week.” “You go from top to bottom,” agreed Bay City coach Lupe Florez. “Columbia is getting better and Brazosport had a good 7-on-7. I think it could be a pretty tough district. You’ve got El Campo and Stafford who are always strong. To me, from top to bottom, the district is tougher.” The Ricebirds have extensive rebuilding to do on the offensive and defensive lines. “That’s what we’ve been focused on,” Condra said. “We’ve been switching a lot of guys in and out on both sides of the football as far as the offensive and defensive lines.

Glow of Cuero’s last state title remains with players BY MIKE FORMAN

MFORMAN@VICAD.COM

CUERO – Trooper Taylor was so excited about making varsity at Cuero that he didn’t say anything about getting a pair of shoes that were over two sizes too big. But Taylor’s shoes fell off during practice and assistant coach Mark Woods noticed they were stuffed with toilet paper. “He said, ‘Trooper get over here,’” Taylor recalled. “He goes in there and gets me a pair of shoes that fit and shows me how to tie them and does all this stuff and then before every game, he would come up to me and say, ‘Give me those shoes.’ “If you think about that, that was something that made me feel special. Here is a guy who is not my dad, is not the same color as me, but is down tying my shoes and making sure that I have shoes on my feet that fit.” Taylor is currently the assistant head coach at Arkansas State, but he will never forget playing running back, defensive back and returning kicks at Cuero. The Gobblers went on a run of three straight state final appearances and capped it by winning the school’s third state championship with a 16-0 record in 1987. “I actually remember like it was yesterday,” running back Robert Strait said of the 30-year anniversary of Cuero’s last state football title. “But we keep in touch so much. We talk about it a lot. We all remember the comradery and the family atmosphere. I think that is what was important.” The Gobblers persevered through the disappointment of two state final losses before putting together their championship season, which ended with a 14-6 win over McGregor at Memorial Stadium in Austin. “It was just such a fun time,” said fullback/linebacker Rodney Pedraza. “I mean in Cuero, it’s football. You breed a monster over here. When you’re winning like that, the whole community thrives on it. Everybody’s upbeat and ready to go. They ’re talking about it. That for me is what I remember.” The Gobblers were dominant during the 1987 season, winning by an average of over 35 points per game, scoring 30 points or more in their first 15 games, holding teams to one score or less in 11 games, and posting seven shutouts. “Back then there were no divisions like

My kids at Bloomington still do pre-game the way we did it here in 1987. Things I learned that we still do.” Pat Blessing was an assistant under Larry Pullin on the 1985 team that lost to Daingerfield in the state final. He took over as head coach in 1986 when the Gobblers lost to Jefferson in the state final. “The thing about those kids that was outstanding was the closeness,” Blessing said. “They were truly a family. I think that was the big thing. I have coached a lot of football and been a lot of places, but that group of kids was family. It started

back with Larry. Those kids all knew each other and played together. It made no difference what their race, color or creed was. They just were a family. It also didn’t hurt that they had some pretty good athletes.” Virtually the entire team played together from the time they were in grammar school and had developed a bond by the time they entered high school. “We’re a small town,” said quarterback Wayne Mathis. “So much of being in a small town is you have the ability both good and bad to know everybody. All those guys I played football with, I’ve known those guys since I was 4 or 5 years old. Their mom was my mom and my mom was their mom. “They had the same responsibility, but they took care of us. Those guys are my best friends that I’ve had my entire life and they still are to this day. I think it had a lot to do with our success we just cared

about each other.” Strait, who was a junior in 1987, had a record-breaking season rushing for 3,515 yards and 52 touchdowns (he scored 54 touchdowns), that included a career-best 356-yard game against Hallettsville. “It was amazing just because I had so much talent around me,” Strait said. “I wouldn’t have done half the stuff I did without my fullback Rodney Pedraza and of course Wayne Mathis. And linemen, we had size and strength and all the guys were smart. We knew what we were doing.” Both of Cuero’s touchdowns in the state final came on passes from Mathis to Carlos Taylor. “What mattered to me was the win and sharing it with everyone else,” Carlos Taylor said. “I just did my job like everyone else did. It was a team effort all the

4A CONTINUED FROM S19 time. We accomplished something together. A championship that no one could ever take away from us.” The players still get together to watch football and go fishing. They attribute many of their achievements to what they accomplished in high school. “Anytime you’re successful and you’re winning, I think that always helps,” said Pedraza, who played baseball at Texas and professionally before ending his ca-

reer in Japan. “I remember coach Gus (Cliff Gustafson) set me aside after I had a couple of bad times. He was like, ‘We watched you play football when you would come to Austin. You were so mean and just wanting to hit everything. You’ve got to have that same attitude when you’re out there.’ You remember how that feeling is when you win and you don’t want to lose. It all helps. The more you win, you just kind of get used to it.” The 1987 players are surprised Cuero has not won another state title despite advancing to the state final in 1993, 1998 and 2004. “This group of guys that Cuero has this

year is talented and has a chance to do some pretty special things,” said Mathis, who is a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates. “So much is stay healthy, got to get the right breaks, guys got to improve, and guys have to buy into what coach (Travis) Reeve is trying to teach them. So many things have to go right. “We just had workers who happened to have a level of talent and a skillset,” he added. “We were talented, but you’ve got to buy into what these guys are teaching you. You’ve got to make good decisions every day. So much of the success you have whether it’s in sports or life is a decision that you process. You have to give yourself a chance to have success.”

KICK OFF TO FALL SAVINGS ATVICTORIA FARM EQUIP

Last May, Beeville head coach Jerry Bomar was in his office looking to build a football staff. Bomar wanted to make sure that his staff was able to build a solid foundation for the Trojans. “It was just me here the last couple of weeks of school,” Bomar said. “I had to hire a staff, and the first time they saw the team was the first day of practice in the fall. We went into the season without any offseason. Now, it’s totally different and the coaches know the players and the players know the coaches and our system.” Bomar found success in his first season at Beeville. The Trojans, finished 9-3 overall and finished 4-1 in District 15-4A, Division 1 and advanced to the area round. The Trojans also won a district title for the first time since 2007. Bomar expects Somerset, Rock-

port-Fulton, Robstown, Pleasanton and La Vernia to be a battle in district play each week. “This is a very competitive district,” said Bomar. “I think we’re pretty much even, and it’s going to be a tight district. Each team has a lot of players coming back on offense, but not a lot of teams return a lot of players on defense.” Quarterback Justin Gomez, who injured his wrist in the Trojans 62-13 bi-district win over Zapata, is back for his senior season. Gomez threw for 3,619 yards and 44 touchdowns his junior season, but lost three wide receivers including all-state receive Waydale Jones. “Last year, our personality was throwing the ball all over the field,” Bomar said. “We don’t have the same personal that we did last year, but we're going to change up our offense just a little bit. Justin had a great year for us last year and knows the offense and has gotten stronger.”

Gonzales is preparing for its second season in the newly realigned District 10-4A, Division II. Coach Kodi Crane believes his team is prepared to face Caldwell, Columbus, Giddings, La Grange and Smithville for another season. “We’re awfully excited about this season,” Crane said. “Our kids have put in hard work over the spring and summer to get in shape.” The Apaches are coming off a bi-district loss to Lorena after finishing fourth in district. “As far as our district, any time you’re in region III it’s tough,” Crane said. “Our district is tough with La

Grange being a powerhouse; Caldwell has outstanding athletes along with Columbus. For us to meet our goals, we have to take advantage of playing together.”

Gobblers go after second consecutive outright title

Cuero’s goal this season is the same as it was last season. The Gobblers are seeking their second consecutive outright District 15-4A, Division II championship. “It was great,” said Cuero coach Travis Reeve. “We were really proud of what we accomplished last year and we’re going to have to be even better to do it again.” The Gobblers expect another challenge from Sinton, Sweeny and Wharton. “I still think the top of our district is going to be the best in our region,” Reeve said. “I think Sinton has a tremendous program and is always going to be really good and well-coached. Sweeny, I think, is

a team that is going to be much improved with good athletes. Wharton is always going to reload with some athletes.” The Tigers are under the direction of Chad Butler, who was promoted from offensive coordinator when Tim Finn left from Baytown Lee. “Hopefully, our strength is going to be in the offensive and defensive lines,” Butler said. “You’ve got a chance with that.” Wharton, Sweeny and Sinton finished in a three-way tie for second last season. “I think Sweeny was a solid team last year that is in the second year under its head coach,” Butler said. “Sinton finished up real strong. Cuero of course is sitting probably at the top as the team to beat. But we’re in the battle.”

TAPPS DIVISION IV

Shiner St. Paul looks to continue past success BY REY CASTILLO

RCASTILLO@VICAD.COM

Shiner St. Paul’s lasting memory from a year ago was a 49-34 win over Arlington Grace Prep to be crowned back-to-back TAPPS Division IV state champions. “I think our expectations are the same,” said St. Paul coach Jake Wachsmuth. “We lost eight great kids last year and 10 the year before. Brad Wright begins his first-year as head coach after the school decided to part ways with Pat Henke. “It’s been hectic but it’s been fun,” Wright said. “I got the position during the second week of June, so I haven’t had much time with the kids.” The Indians finished 5-7 last season and 4-2 in district. “The kids have had to learn a new sys-
