W elcome E xtra 2017-18

I am excited to share with you some personal insights and special moments that inspired our upcoming RSO season.

One year after the RSO performed its first concert at Jefferson High School, Leonard Bernstein broke onto the Silver Screen with what I believe is his greatest film score -- the powerful soundtrack to On The Waterfront. “Lenny” was one my inspiring mentors. We are celebrating his centennial with a beautiful tribute including music from Candide, West Side Story, and one of Lenny’s favorites, Tchaikovshy’s 5th Symphony. I have invited renowned pianist Jeffrey Beigel, featured in his RSO debut with Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. Akemi Takayama solos in Vivaldi’s colorful Four Seasons, and I have chosen the original instrumentation of another audience favorite, Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

SYMPHONY UNDER THE STARS

I’m proud to lead our great musicians and a 200-voice chorus in Franz Josef Haydn’s “The Creation.” In the beginning, out of the “Representation of Chaos” comes a blazing C Major flood of light: “And There Was Light.” It is itself an amazing musical creation.

AT THE MOVIES

RSO Pops will feature Ellis Hall, the great protege of Ray Charles, Holiday Pops with American Idol star Michael Lynche, and the music of Journey.

Elmwood Park Amphitheater.

Our first Destination program this season takes me back to an unforgettable experience. Leah and I visited Wittenberg, Germany where Martin Luther likely nailed his 95 Theses. We will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation with a meaningful and beautiful program with chorus and instrumentalists. I hope you will join us as often as you can.

David Stewart Wiley, Music Director Blooming under David Stewart Wiley’s energetic and inspiring leadership since 1996, the RSO has experienced remarkable artistic growth, expansion and innovation. A renowned talent, Wiley has not only taken the RSO to new artistic heights, but has conducted such distinguished symphonies as Atlanta, Buffalo, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis, Oregon, Honolulu, Utah and others. This inspiring Maestro and world traveler is also an engaged and active community partner, having been named “Citizen of the Year” in Roanoke for his outstanding service and outreach.

WELLNESS ARTS

WELLNESS ARTS is a music therapy informed

program of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra that aims to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of memory care patients in Roanoke. Small ensembles of RSO professional musicians, specially trained in memory care, will bring music to populations in adult facilities. This new program has a multi-year focus to impact memory care patients in profound ways.

THE POWER OF MUSIC, especially live music,

brings the memory care patients into close contact with our professional musicians and will mentally and emotionally stimulate them in meaningful ways. These interactions with musicians are grounded in a core belief that music touches people on a fundamental level, regardless of their level of functioning.

DID YOU KNOW? Research conducted by the RSO, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the National Center for Creative Aging and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, demonstrates that music has a healing, restorative quality for children and adults with developmental disabilities, special needs and long-term illnesses.
