Elevate Your Massage Therapy with the ® Biomat Whether you are looking to de-stress or pamper yourself, massage therapy is the go-to for many Americans. No longer a luxury for the wealthy, millions of Americans are incorporating massage into their personal health regimen.

A

ccording to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) 2016 consumer survey, 50 percent of adult Americans who had a massage between July 2015 and July 2016 received it for medical or health reasons, while 28 percent had it for relaxation and stress reduction. Massage continues to be more mainstream and accepted by medical professionals. As a result, the integration of massage therapy into patient care continues to advance. With demand soaring, so too does the demand for qualified massage practitioners. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 26 percent increase in therapists by 2024. Massage therapy is a manual technique which manipulates soft body tissues to enhance a person’s health and well-being. A therapist will most often use their hands, but may also use their forearms, elbows and feet. There are dozens of massage styles and some employ the use of tools such as hot stones and a new wave is emerging with those using the Biomat®.

Increased Blood Flow

Types of massage Massage therapy dates back thousands of years. It is widely accepted that massage will relieve pain and promote a general sense of well-being. There are many types of massage, but most offer similar benefits. According to ATMA, the most common forms of massage are: Swedish – Swedish style massage is the most common and is used to relax and energize you. This styles uses long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Deep tissue – for muscle damage and injury, such as back strain. This style foucses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue and fascia. Sports – to help athletic injury, help recovery and keep the body flexible. Icon made by Freepik from www.flaticon.com

This style focuses on areas of the body that are stressed from repetitive movements. Chair – great for short massages focusing on the upper body.

Massage therapy can help to improve blood flow. Increased blood flow is a key element to good health, as blood carries vital nutrients and oxygen throughout our cardiovascular system. The Biomat® will complement any massage service by its gentle far infrared rays. The warmth will increase local circulation supporting our body’s functions. How the Biomat® helps Every year, there are more therapists who are learning about the Biomat® and are incorporating it into their services. The Biomat’s® infrared heat warms the body, relieving pain and stiffness and relaxes the body so your client can have a soothing experience. Gretchen Carrubba of Bodywork by Gretchen always uses a Biomat® at her Tennessee studio. She even takes the mini to her clients’ homes. “I feel the Biomat® provides healing energy to my clients, [and] it also affects me in a very positive way,” said Gretchen. Like many practitioners who use the Biomat®, Gretchen notices she too receives a benefit. She says if she massages a client without a Biomat® her back and feet hurt. However, when she uses a Biomat® , she does “not experience any discomfort. I contribute that to the Biomat®. I

cannot imagine performing any massage without my Biomat®!” At Wellness Works Massage, Jeanne Thune allows customers to sit on a Biomat® Mini before or after a massage for its healing touch. She uses the Biomat® Professional for all her sessions. With the right temperature she says “clients … come out of their sessions ‘melted’ and very relaxed. It helps them go deeper in their meditative state.” Jessica Proia of Urban Escape finds the Biomat® makes her work much easier by relaxing clients and warming up their muscles. “The more relaxed and disengaged a client is during the session, the easier it is for me to work with them both mentally and physically. [The Biomat®] makes it easier for them to relinquish, allowing me easier access to do what I need to do to produce the best results,” said Jessica. Utilizing the Biomat® in massage therapy provides the client with additional benefits. Jessica says “far infrared [heat], negative ion technology and the healing powers of amethyst crystals cannot be produced by massage therapy alone and I don’t think that there is any comparison to the comfort of lying on a Biomat®, so this gives the clients an experience that is much more pampering and luxurious!” “On the very cold days, they love how it warms them up. Jessica’s long time clients notice a difference with the Biomat®. “Since I’ve incorporated the Biomat® into my sessions they have expressed an even greater appreciation for their services! They love the Biomat®! They enjoy it before and during the massage and have experienced greater results after their sessions!” she says.

and mind. It is an effective treatment for stress, pain and muscle tension. Therapists using the Biomat® have found it useful for warming up clients and to enhance their work. Reduce muscle tension Massage therapy can help to reduce tension buildup within the fascia, a thin layer of tissue that surrounds our muscles, bones and organs throughout our body. The pressure from the massage helps to breakup adhesions reducing tension and improve range of motion.

Massage will improve relaxation and release stress chemicals in the body. A study by AMTA showed significant decrease in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. They also note changes in psychological states, have been measured by physiological responses, the Perceived Stress Scale, the POMS Depression Scale, and the Anxiety State Scale. Increase range of motion Inelastic muscle tissues cause restriction and increase muscle tightness. Friction from a massage helps to warm the body and increase blood flow restoring range of motion. Pain Reduction Massage increases circulation and helps to reduce metabolic wastes from the muscles, which

are responsible for cramping and discomfort. A review of over 60 studies published in the Journal of Pain Medicine found massage therapy proved beneficial and in addition to relieving pain it also improved anxiety. Other benefits of massage While more research is needed, some studies have found massage to be beneficial for: Anxiety, Fibromyalgia, headaches, digestive disorders, and temporomandibular joint pain. We recommend speaking to a therapist to find out what kind of massage would best suit you. Massage should not be considered a replacement for medical care but used alongside other methods of treatment for the benefit of the patient.

Returning Energy Flow with the Biomat® Acupuncture is a complementary medical treatment used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Increasingly, people are turning to the practice looking for a non-pharmaceutical approach.

A

cceptance of the practice continues to grow, as an increasing number of institutions recognize acupuncture as an effective form of health care. Acupuncture is now covered by many insurance policies, and doctors are eager to find a drug-free alternative to pain management in light of the dangers of opioids, and the opioid crisis in the United States. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health, recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for pain and an adjunct treatment for addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other conditions1. The World Health Organization (WHO), an agency within the United Nations issued a report listing 28 diseases, symptoms and conditions for which acupuncture has been proven effective2. The American Medical Association Journal of Internal Medicine (JAMA) concluded acupuncture as an effective means for reducing chronic pain with few side effects3. What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice in which trained practitioners stimulate specific points on the body to relieve pain or treat a health condition. The practice involves using very thin needles placed along “meridian points” to remove blockages, re-balancing the energy flow throughout the body.

Meridians – The pathways in which chi flows. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the meridians are connected to organs and glands transporting vital energy and nutrients to all the cells in our body. When a meridian is blocked, the flow of chi is disrupted. This disruption can lead to pain and illness.

The Benefits of Acupuncture The following list is from the World Health Organization (WHO)4. The WHO recognizes acupuncture’s therapeutic effects for over 28 diseases, symptoms, or conditions, but noted additional controlled trials are needed. •

Imagine the inside of your body as a network of roads. When the system is clear, everything will function normally. However, when there is an accident, the cars will begin to back up, causing traffic. Our body expresses this traffic as pain or dysfunction. An acupuncturist will stimulate certain points on the body to divert the traffic and remove the accident, thus restoring normal flow. The science behind acupuncture Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural pain relieving and self-healing mechanisms. Exactly how this works is still being understood. Research has demonstrated the procedure can cause multiple biological responses by sensory neurons which then have a physiological effect on the brain and body. When an acupressure point is stimulated, the nervous system releases chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals assuage pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals which influences the body’s own natural healing system. How the Biomat® helps In acupuncture, when the meridians are blocked, and the flow is stagnant, pain and other conditions begin to appear. The Biomat® will assist the practitioner in returning flow, because the far-infrared heat increases circulation, relaxes muscles and reduces stiffness. Jessica Barrett, the founder of Denver Mind Body Essence, has found the Biomat® aids the TCM and acupuncture she uses on patients. “[The Biomat®] enhances the energy moving through the body that is created and directed with the needles. Really, it can help to enhance the results I am getting with acupuncture because the body more quickly goes into the parasympathetic state and can more easily rest and heal,” said Barrett. Diamond Executive ISA Kate Carter of Acupuncture with Kate has been practicing acupuncture for over 20 years. She has found her treatments work faster with the Biomat®, and her clients notice the difference. “I think it relaxes them so that they are more receptive to the needles and to allowing the treatments to take hold. As stress is the cause of so many illnesses and pathologies that develop when the stress is reduced, people heal more easily and aren’t as vulnerable to “invasion” by pathogenic factors,” explained Carter.

It also makes me unique as a practitioner and shows my commitment to offering the best,” said Glass. Practitioners who employ the use of the Biomat® have set themselves apart from the competition.

Kate advertises the Biomat® as part of her treatments on her website. “My clients love the Biomat . Many say how much they look forward to coming for their treatment because they love to lie on it! Some patients have chosen me over other acupuncturists in town because of what they read or already knew about it,” said Carter. ®

Dr. Lorne Brown has had much success with the Biomat®. “We have eight treatment rooms and some patients would refuse being in a room without a Biomat® so we purchased more so every treatment table has one. For a few months it was a scheduling nightmare but no longer an issue now that each room is supplied with a mat,” said Brown.

What is the cracking sound? When you receive a chiropractic adjustment, you will probably hear a pop or cracking sound. It may sound alarming to you, but when performed by a professional there is nothing to worry about. Every joint in the body has fluid in it. When you put that joint at a certain angle and apply a certain amount of pressure you will hear a crack or pop; what chiropractors call a cavitation. The sound is simply gas being released from the fluid. Why does it feel good? When your muscles are tight and stiff, nothing feels better than having your back cracked. This temporarily relieves tension, loosening the ligaments and increasing range of motion. “Cracking” also releases endorphins, a chemical for reducing pain and increasing pleasure.

Chiropractic doctors A Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), often referred to as a chiropractor is a primary care doctor who specializes in spine health and general wellbeing. They are trained to detect and reduce misalignments of the spine which interfere with the function of the central nervous system. The doctor will perform manual adjustments to correct alignment problems and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Chiropractic focuses on maintaining optimal health naturally without the use of drugs or surgery. The doctors are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. Chiropractic adjustments A chiropractic adjustment is a therapeutic procedure that uses controlled force, applied to specific joints and surrounding tissue to restore mobility and improve the body’s physical function. When performed by a trained professional it is completely safe. Using x-rays and other instruments, the chiropractor will locate misalignments in the spine. The patient will be positioned on a table and the doctor will adjust the patient using a device or their hands. The goal is to restore normal nerve transmission and assist the body in recuperating on its own. Chiropractors focus on the spine because of its role in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS controls the body and sends signals from the brain down the spine affecting all organs, tissues and cells. The belief is that any misalignment of the spine can hinder the body’s function. Left unresolved, this can make you more susceptible to chronic problems. The benefits of Chiropractic care Chiropractic is known for its many benefits because of its ability to help reduce inflammation and balance the body’s sympathetic and parasympathetic response. The sympathetic nervous system triggers the “fight-or-flight” response and the parasympathetic nervous system can act like a brake and promote stress reduction. It’s been found that adjustments in the upper cervical region and sacral region can stimulate the parasympathetic response which reduces stress and even improves the function of certain organs. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that after subjects received a cervical adjustment, pulse rates decreased, blood pressure balanced, and parasympathetic responses were significantly positive. Tips from our doctors A healthy spine is often overlooked as part of a healthy lifestyle. Biomat® users can follow these tips to help them keep their spine in alignment. Dr. Rita Lathon of Restorative Touch Chiropractic recommends 30 minutes to an hour each day on the Biomat®. For those without an Amethyst & Tourmaline Pillow, she suggests using a rolled-up towel behind your neck and knees. “Your head should be resting comfortably on the Biomat®, so the neck roll should not be too big. The neck roll will encourage the proper C-shaped curve in your neck, and over time will restore the curve and reduce neck pain. The towel under the knees reduces tension on the low back,” says Dr. Lathon. Dr. Tracey Norman wants to remind users when they are using the Biomat® to put their phones away. “Don’t hold your phone above your head trying to read and be busy. Allow this to be a time for you to really let go, relax, restore and rejuvenate. We spend so many hours every day on phones and devices, often putting our heads and necks into a forward flexion position which is not beneficial to the spine or nervous system,” says Dr. Norman. DECEMBER 2019  RICHWAY WAVELENGTH  19

as to why so many people visit Chiropractors on a regular basis. People understand how stress reduction and maintenance of a healthy spine and nervous system can set the stage to recovery. Chiropractors focus on educating their patients on the body’s natural ability to heal itself by removing obstructions from the nervous system. Since the central nervous system facilitates healing, many symptoms have been proven to improve through chiropractic adjustments. How the Biomat® helps The Biomat® is the perfect complement for any chiropractor. The Biomat’s® far-infrared heat increases circulation, relaxes muscles and reduces stiffness. The Biomat® directly affects the body’s ability to unwind deep stress in the musculoskeletal system. Because of this, it integrates well with chiropractic treatment. Dr. Rita Lathon of Restorative Touch Chiropractic says the Biomat® benefits a chiropractic treatment in several ways. “First, it is much more comfortable to receive an adjustment when muscles are relaxed, so it’s easier on the patient. Secondly, when muscles are relaxed, it is much easier to restore proper range of motion to joints with a chiropractic adjustment than when muscles are spasmed, so it’s easier on the doctor” said Dr. Lathon. 20  RICHWAY WAVELENGTH DECEMBER 2019

Dr. Lathon explains chiropractic treatment and the Biomat® work together synergistically and patients will get better much more quickly. “The Biomat® induces deep relaxation and thus drives the parasympathetic nervous system to be dominant. The parasympathetic nervous system is our rest, digest and heal nervous system, so the Biomat® helps us get out of fight or flight and go into healing mode” says Dr. Lathon. Massachusetts based chiropractor, Dr. Tracey Norman says with regular use the Biomat® helps to “restore” a person. “With today’s pace of life, our nervous system is bombarded with lots of input which keeps us in sympathetic overdrive and, for some, in a state of adrenal burnout. Chiropractic adjustments address this and the Biomat® is very complementary to bringing the body into a greater state of peace and balance” says Dr. Norman. At the Austin Family Chiropractic, patients sit on a Biomat Mini® or use the Biomat Professional® prior to treatment. Dr. Austin says the mat helps patients’ muscles to relax making their vertebrae easier to move during adjustments. “One of my goals as a Doctor of Chiropractic is to reduce the stress load that my patients are experiencing in their hectic 21st century lives. The Biomat®

microgen©123rf.com

assists me with that mission.” At the clinic he treats a lot of “stressed out” mothers. After the adjustment, he allows them to rest on the Biomat® with an Amethyst & Tourmaline Pillow. They report back that “[It was], by far the most relaxing half hour of their entire month,” said Dr. Austin.

How clients respond to treatments with the Biomat® Dr. Norman uses a Biomat Mini® on her chiropractic table. She finds her clients relax more and receive their treatments better. “I have seen a variety of responses to using the Biomat® over the years. They range from decreased pain, greater level of relaxation, better sleep, and improved mood,” said Dr. Norman.

“Following Biomat® treatments, patients report being calm and often deeply relaxed. They also report improved circulation in their extremities and a substantial reduction in pain. “Many have voiced that their Biomat® treatments have made their chiropractic and massage treatments more effective and lasting,” said Dr. Lathon.

98.6° F Nature’s Standard to Health and Wellness Interview with author and naturopath Uwe Karstädt about why he wrote his new book 98.6° F and his experienece with the Biomat®.

we Karstädt is a naturopath based in Munich, Germany. Since 1986, he has been treating and advising clients at his clinic. For the last four years, he has also been teaching alternative medicine at academies in his hometown and in Switzerland.

and scientists as well as tapping into Chinese and Ayurveda medicine. The end result of this extensive research is his latest book entitled 98.6° F, in which he convinces the reader that this is the ideal temperature for vitality and a sign of good health.

In addition to specializing in naturopathy, Karstädt is an accomplished writer. Millions in Germany have benefited from his profound knowledge of health and gained a better understanding of how to improve their quality of life in all aspects. Now on his seventh book, Karstädt teaches us why maintaining a good body temperature is important for ideal health and the foundation for a strong immune system.

He goes on to state, “as humans, [we function optimally] when all the enzymes and the immune system are supported by optimum working temperature. A few degrees too high can be considered as fever and could also be an emergency situation. The same is true for low temperature.”

“After 30 years of practice I came to certain conclusions about the basic cornerstones of health and vitality. One of them is certainly to obtain the optimum body temperature for an optimum metabolism,” said Karstädt. Upon treating thousands of patients at his clinic, Karstädt grew concerned as he noticed many people did not have optimal body temperature and wondered “why so many people have lost this essential quality for health and well-being.” Karstädt began to explore the subject by studying the research of contemporary doctors 22  RICHWAY WAVELENGTH DECEMBER 2019

Karstädt has been using the Biomat® for the last six years. Over a thousand of his clients have used the Biomat® and many have purchased one. On a daily basis, he continues to hear stories of relief and genuine healing. “[The] feedback I receive can only be described as very encouraging and sometimes breathtaking. Most clients [say it is] the best investment in their health that they have ever done,” explained Karstädt. Aside from relief from muscle tension, pain, and cold, Karstädt has observed his clients experiencing the strong support offered by the Biomat® in combination with all of the other

methods he incorporates. “Colleagues report about how much easier it is to apply their body work with the help of the Biomat®, whether this is massage, deep tissue work or any other body work for pain and relaxation,” said Karstädt. As a part of their treatment, Karstädt has been recommending his clients use the Biomat® Professional and Biomat® Mini for many years. He says that with the Biomat®, results come faster because “negative ions and the infrared rays do their miraculous work, [and] the Biomat® reminds people to relax daily and take their life in their own hands and focus on their health.”

Buy the book Naturopath and bestselling author Uwe Karstädt says, “a cold body is a sick body.” He has discovered that 70 percent of his patients who suffer from chronic illness also have low body temperatures in the range of 94.1° F - 96.8° F. In his latest book 98.6° F, he explains the causes of “body coldness” and the importance of proper body temperature. Karstädt provides simple methods anyone can do to warm the body and bring one’s self back into a healthy state. In the final chapter, Karstädt discusses the healing power of infrared radiation and how infrared mats such as the Biomat® can aid in sustaining optimal health. 98.6° F can be ordered here.

F

unction and Health Professionals LLC opened its doors in the heart of Georgia in 2016. According to Dr. Shantel King-Whitby, it is a “physical medicine and rehabilitation practice focused on traditional, complementary, and alternative treatments for musculoskeletal pain.” At the clinic, she treats individuals with neck, joint, and muscle pain. Some of her clients have sustained past injuries while others have pain due to degenerative arthritis or acute/chronic strains and sprains. Dr. King-Whitby is a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine located in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to opening the clinic, she provided rehabilitation services at a local hospital. She discovered the Biomat® at an acupuncture conference, where attendees could try it for 15-20 minutes. “I really enjoyed that experience and found it relaxing. I obtained some initial information about the product, and over the next few weeks did some more research on it. After reading the science behind it and testimonials along with my own personal experience, I purchased the Pro Biomat®, a pillow and the Quantum Energy Pad™ about a month later,” said Dr. King-Whitby. Using the Biomat® at home provided her with warmth and relaxation. She realized it could be a tool to use with her clients.

“A lot of my patients have chronic musculoskeletal pain, they are stressed out, energy depleted and often report cold hands or feet or are using a heating pad for their pain issue. I felt that the Biomat® would offer some benefit to them so I decided to try it in the office,” replied Dr. King-Whitby. The response has been great. Dr. King-Whitby has observed that patients respond positively to having the Biomat® incorporated with acupuncture treatments. She notes that they find the warmth from the farinfrared rays to be very relaxing. “I have had new patients who have gotten on the table following a session where the Biomat® was used earlier to comment on the table feeling warm. This is always accompanied by a smile,” Dr. King-Whitby remarked. Dr. King-Whitby finds the Biomat® enhances the effectiveness of her acupuncture treatments. She has also observed that the Biomat® assists her patients in relaxing faster, aiding in muscle relaxation and some psychological stress. “I have had to wake up patients at times following their treatment. I also believe that the far-infrared rays help to penetrate the muscles more deeply,” explained Dr. KingWhitby. A lot of science is behind the body’s reaction to sessions on the Biomat®.

overall feeling of “well-being,” relaxation and an ease in muscle tension.

Science has shown that proteins in the body work optimally at certain temperatures, and we know that heat is energy, and we also know that cortisol associated with prolonged stress is damaging. I, therefore, feel that the Biomat® assists in renewing some of this spent energy which is then available to help fuel the body’s natural functions,” explained Dr. King-Whitby.

“It lets them know that we are different from other places they have been before, in a good way, and [they] are willing to invest in identifying beneficial solutions for the issues they care about. With that said, the Biomat® has been a great patient satisfier, and therefore, helped with word of mouth referrals,” said Dr. King-Whitby. Dr. King-Whitby recommends other practitioners try the Biomat® as well.

Now, the clinic is receiving requests for treatments on the Biomat® specifically. Their clients feel that it gives them an

me, it has helped my patients physically, helped patient satisfaction and word of mouth referrals and generated some revenue as a stand alone inoffice service,” she said. “Several months ago I decided to become a Biomat® distributor with Richway because I believe in the quality and effectiveness of their Biomat® product. I had tried another brand in the past without the same results. I have since sold several of these to patients who are now enjoying them in their homes.” Disclaimer - Bryn Perkins is an ISA. She says stress plays a role in many diseases and we heal faster when our brains are “resting” and our body isn’t over activated by stress hormones. “I see the Biomat® as a catalyst for that natural process – our body wants to heal, we just need to give it the right impetus. I often hear people say after using it that they feel totally relaxed, like they just had a massage or that they simply

Bryn says the deep heat from the Biomat® improves circulatory flow and uses the Biomat® in her Eating for a Healthier You program.

The primary service Bryn now offers is called Brainwave Optimization, which uses software to teach you to relax and focus your brain. At her clinic, she often treats clients who have experience some form of emotional or physical trauma. The Biomat® enhances this service by helping clients to relax before their sessions begin. “It is like getting a jumpstart, as the brain moves more easily into balance when the body and brain are relaxed. This is particularly true for people who have experienced high stress and for people who generally feel overwhelmed in their lives,” explained Bryn. Bryn started using the Biomat® during a stressful period of her life. She found herself having difficult sleeping and woke up many times throughout the night. She found that the Biomat® “taught” her body to sleep again. Her husband also found relief by using the Biomat® daily.

“The Biomat® became his new best friend, and he [used] it every night for a month until [his shoulder and back] pain disappeared,” said Bryn.

this hypnotherapist finds that it “takes her clients in a state of deeper state of relaxation more quickly, and enhances the benefits of the work.”

Bryn incorporated the Biomat® into her practice based on her own positive experiences as well as those of her colleagues. To accommodate demand, she turned a storage space into a Biomat® room.

Dr. Lorilee Schoenbeck at Eastern View Naturopathic also finds the Biomat® to be an exceptional resource for patients of the practice, especially those who are very anxious and suffering from a lot of pain.

“It’s inviting and warm. People can sign up to use it through me. Patients of the primary care practice next door can also sign up through their receptionist,” said Bryn. Other practitioners at Eastern View are taking advantage of the room as well. A hypnotherapist who uses the Biomat® regularly also loves using it on her clients during her sessions. According to Bryn,

“Sometimes we will send patients to the Biomat® for up to 45 minutes to relieve pain and stress. I really appreciate that very tangible resource that makes people feel better right away. This is one where there is an instant benefit,” said Dr. Lorilee. Aside from a smart business investment, Bryn also considers the Biomat® a sound investment for her personal health. Bryn

has been the proud owner of her own Biomat® for the last six years, and in that time, she uses it almost daily. She has found that while people often find themselves spending excessively on disease, we should consider taking a proactive approach and investing to enhance our health. “I am impressed by its construction and dependability. I also like Richway’s excellent repair policy if something does happen. It is a tool I plan on having for life. My 91-year-old father has one and loves it, and it was one of the few ’extras’ that he took with him this winter to his senior living facility. The way to find out if it is of value to you is to try it. You’ll know,” said Bryn. Disclaimer - Bryn Perkins is an ISA. fter experiencing a foot injury, Licensed Massage Therapist, Osteopathic Manual Therapist, and healing coach Edan Harari found himself in pursuit of an effective healing technique. While on his quest, Edan learned about a technique developed by British Osteopath Arthur Lincoln Pauls called Ortho-Bionomy. Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle way of moving and positioning the body – allowing it to naturally realign restoring comfort and flexibility. The relief Edan received inspired him to learn more about manual movement

therapies and to heal others’ suffering from mental and physical pain. After years of practicing different modalities, Edan went on to develop Kinetic Release Therapy (KRT). According to Edan, KRT is a “manual and movement therapy practice that includes osteopathic-based manual therapy for pain-relief and to enhance performance, as well as movement therapy classes and workshops.” KRT utilizes a combination of three main modalities: OrthoBionomy, Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR), and AcroTherapeutics. According to KineticBodyTherapy.com, KRT

works by releasing tension in soft tissue, re-aligning the joints, and breaking the body’s holding and pain patterns. Later, Edan came across the Biomat® through a colleague he was sharing a studio with. He enjoyed it during his breaks and began to use it with his clients. “My clients love the treatments involving my Biomat®. They always tell me how they don’t want to get up from the table because the mat feels so good!” exclaimed Edan. Edan now uses the Biomat® during all his manual therapy sessions in both his private practice in the Flatiron District

of Manhattan and his home practice in Midwood, Brooklyn. “I use [the Biomat®] to help support and maximize the healing in my sessions. It helps my clients slowly drift deeper into a state of ease, balance, and relaxation,” explained Edan. Like many others, Edan has found the Biomat® to be a great complement to his work. “The Biomat® has definitely impacted my business in a positive way, as clients now look forward not just to my manual therapy, but to my Biomat®!” said Edan. In addition to the positive impact the Biomat® has on his business, Edan has found that

it enhances the effectiveness of his treatments as well. “I find that my Barnes Myofascial Release sessions are much more effective due to the heat generated by the Biomat® which supports the physiological process of the fascial release,” explained Edan. Edan recommends that other practitioners give the Biomat® a try. “I would say to others that it’s totally worth the investment. It should be looked at as an investment for your business and not an expense.”

ince 2002, Studio 1 Pilates has been changing the lives of Baltimore residents through mindful movements. The studio teaches the path to pain relief and wellness through gentle impact exercises with an emphasis on proper breathing and spinal and pelvic alignment. Pilates exercises may look simple, but it takes precision and control to be effective. The exercise is a system of flexion, extension and rotation for core strengthening, conditioning and rehab.

I wanted to have them, and to utilize them in my life, and in my professional practice,” said Wallis. Wallis has a dedicated treatment room for Biomat® sessions. “My clients can spend 30 minutes to 1 hour on the Biomat®. Many of my students like relaxing on the Biomat® after working out. For many of them, the Biomat® offers instant relief. I have several students who in addition to the Pilates training they do with me, they come every week to spend time on the Biomat®. They are amazed at how relaxed [and] energized they feel after each

One of her students found relief from pain by Pilates exercises and the Biomat®. “[The student] was really moved by the comfort she felt and the sense of relaxation that washed through her entire body. She was able to finally feel warm and her pain was greatly reduced. She comes on the regular basis to use the Biomat®,” replied Wallis. The Biomat® is a positive addition to Studio 1 Pilates.

“It offers my clients and an additional level of wellness and support. ver since she was a young girl, Dr. Rita Lathon knew she wanted to be a doctor.

She followed her passion and graduated with top honors from Parker University, a private university founded as a college of chiropractic. Her clinic, Restorative Touch Chiropractic opened its doors in 2013. Dr. Lathon believes stress is the root of all disease and can manifest in many forms, including: structural imbalances (of the spine and muscles), nutritional imbalances or deficiencies, toxic buildup, and emotional stress manifesting as physiological imbalances.

get to the root of imbalances, remove interference, and allow the body to heal,” said Dr. Lathon. Dr. Lathon specializes in manual adjustments as well as table and instrument-assisted adjustments. She also offers Quantum Neurology, a light therapy which helps nerves that may be associated with painful or debilitating injuries, illnesses, or conditions to stabilize so that the body can heal itself.

Dr. Lathon learned about the Biomat® through her parents. She got in touch with a Pilates instructior who offered her one to try in her clinic. Utilizing both the Biomat® and Quantum Energy Pad® on her clinic’s “I believe in taking a truly holistic massage table, she observed approach to healthcare to her clients to see if they would

notice any difference in their treatment sessions. “I was astounded. I found that I could use very deep pressure on people who normally could not tolerate much pressure at all,” said Dr. Lathon. Dr. Lathon’s clients did not even notice that she was using deeper pressure techniques on them, and she did not receive any comments of discomfort from them when she did. Prior to this, she made note that these very same repeat clients would previously complain about techniques utilizing deeper pressure. Furthermore, regular clients who Dr. Lathon had treated for years with a record of having difficulty relaxing during

massage sessions became much more quiet, relaxed, and some would often “fall into a very deep, restorative sleep.” In her initial time with the Biomat®, Dr. Lathon’s clients noted that there was something about the Biomat® which enabled them to relax, and they felt her massage treatments were more effective as a result. Now that the Biomat® has been fully incorporated into Dr. Lathon’s practice, she has found that her patients enjoy it. She has observed that the far infrared rays help to deeply relax muscles, which makes her massage treatments more effective and easier to do. Dr. Lathon also notes that her clients benefit from the increased circulation, pain reduction, and deep relaxation

received when they are using the Biomat® through her sessions. “The Biomat® has definitely impacted my business in a positive way and has paid for itself many times over. People know that they will get a better massage from me, because they are getting the added benefit of the Biomat® with their treatments,” said Dr. Lathon. According to Dr. Lathon, the Biomat® has been especially beneficial to her clients who suffer from pain associated with arthritis and other ailments. “I recommend it highly to both patients and practitioners.”

MAMA MEDICINE One practitioner takes healing to another level. At her business, SPACE by Mama Medicine, Deborah Hanekamp uses the Biomat® as part of her medicine readings to bring balance back to everyone’s lives.

D

eborah Hanekamp a.k.a. Mama Medicine performs medicine readings and energy work in her serene SoHo location called Space by Mama Medicine. The minimalist loft is bright, airy, and accented with natural plants and

crystals.

Hanekamp is a Seeress, a woman who can see into the future. Ever since she was a child, she could see the auras surrounding someone. Intuitively, she can interpret this energy thus being able to communicate to people what their higher selves are saying to them. She did not realize that her gift was special and unique until her tweens. “I realized not everyone could see auras. When I was twelve, I was talking to my friends about the colors around people and what they meant. They all looked at me like I was nuts. I think I’m still in the process of embracing who I am and what I’m meant to do in this world to this day, but I also know that this is the only thing I can do. Every time I’ve wanted to give up and go into hiding, I just get put right back on this path, so now, I’m in full acceptance of it and all that comes with it,” said Hanekamp. Over the last 20 years, Hanekamp has developed her own style. It’s a mix of different traditions and guidance from her mentors which she has embraced along her journey into the spiritual and esoteric worlds. “I didn’t go to university, instead I deep dove into all things mystical DECEMBER 2019  RICHWAY WAVELENGTH  35

What is an aura? It is a body of energy that surrounds each person. The aura consists of several layers and they correspond to the chakras in your body. Auras constantly change color and shape, depending on how the person is feeling and where they are emotionally and spiritually.

and spiritual which led me to traveling back and forth to Thailand for five years and back and forth to the Peruvian Amazon for eight years where I did an apprenticeship in shamanism. Though I deeply love and respect them all, none of these practices felt like mine, and that is one part of the story of how Medicine Readings were born.” Medicine readings A medicine reading is a deeply personal ritual which comprises of an aura reading and energy balancing. The multi-sensory experience is filled with sound and scent. Hanekamp uses an assortment of different instruments to achieve the desired results. “I use Crystal Tones Singing Bowls that work very deeply with cleansing, blessing, and protecting the aura. I also use different natural instruments that all have a similar purpose,” she says. The purpose of a medicine reading is for the recipient to leave feeling balanced, contemplative, and empowered. At her studio, she teaches that we all have the tools to become our own healer. “When you come for a Medicine reading, we sit together and speak about anything you are looking to call in or clear out of your life. Then, we meditate for a couple of minutes as I read your aura more in depth. We speak a bit more about hidden talents and gifts or habits that

could be [blocking] your way to becoming your own healer,” said Hanekamp. After the initial reading and guidance, you are prepared for the healing ceremony which begins by laying on a Biomat®. “I facilitate a healing ceremony that engages all faculties of the senses through, distance healing, sound and crystals to cleanse, bless and protect you. After the ceremony, we chat about some spiritual homework you can do and also a ritual bath, so you leave feeling you have all the tools you need to be your own healer. I ask that you come no more than once a month because I want you to be self-reliant and not dependent on me,” she says. Hanekamp is a big believer in the power of a Biomat®, so much so she has more than a dozen Biomat® Minis and a Biomat® Professional for her services. “I learned about the Biomat® from my friend Dorothea Barth who had me lay on hers after I returned from Peru. I immediately felt grounded and deeply relaxed and wanted my clients to feel the same way, so she let me borrow hers for medicine readings,” she said. She says the Biomat® helps her clients become more relaxed and open to receive the ceremony. For those that want to reap more energy from the Biomat®, she recommends trying her energy cleanse ritual bath. DECEMBER 2019  RICHWAY WAVELENGTH  37

Energy Cleanse Bath A spiritual bath is a great way to relax your body and renew your aura. Our aura is like a mirror which expresses our thoughts, emotions, and intentions. Try this bath when you need to cleanse yourself of the negative energy you may have encountered. Ingredients: • • • •

1 cup Epsom salt 6 - 10 drops of rosemary essential oil Black tourmaline crystal Tea of white sage

Let intuition be your guide when determining how much of an ingredient to use. All the ingredients go inside the tub. The tea of white sage can be brewed and poured in or simply allow the sage to steep in the bath water. The tourmaline can rest in the water or be placed somewhere on your body you feel called to. Mama Medicine’s baths are visually stunning. If you prefer a simpler bath with no clean up, just put all the ingredients into a cheesecloth bag.
