Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 20-15 (.571). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

At the heart of the resurgence for Robert Morris since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign been one aspect: Defense. Over the last four years, the Colonials have held eight opponents to 45 points or less. Robert Morris opened its 2010-11 campaign and christened the Andrew Toole era with a virtuoso defensive performance, holding Saint Peter’s to a shooting percentage of just 16.7 percent (6-for-36) and 30 points in a 55-30 victory at the Charles L. Sewall Center (11/13/10). It marks the fewest points RMU has allowed in its 35-year Division I history. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris has posted eight of its top 12 best defensive performances against Division I opponents in regard to points allowed. Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last four seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris opened play in The Philly Hoop Group Classic, Nov. 19, by suffering its first loss of the 2011-12 campaign, dropping a 66-60 decision to Penn at the Palestra. The Colonials started the game on fire, hitting four of their first six shots from the field en route to a 10-0 advantage. Junior center Lijah Thompson started the surge with a dunk off an offensive rebound, while redshirt junior guard Velton Jones scored five points and redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson drained a three-pointer. Penn head coach Jerome Allen quickly called timeout, and the Quakers regrouped, trimming their deficit to 1211 thanks to an 11-2 run. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams helped stem the tide by hitting a three-pointer with 11:59 to go in the first half that gave Robert Morris a 15-11 advantage, and another trifecta from Williams allowed the lead to swell to 18-11. Rob Belcore’s three-pointer from the corner helped cap a 9-2 spurt by Penn to tie the game, 20-20, with 8:12 remaining before the break, but again Robert Morris responded with the long ball, as Johnson buried a three-pointer to push the Colonials back in front, 23-20. Zack Rosen, who finished with 19 points, gave the Quakers their first lead, 25-23, with a three-pointer, but a jumper by Williams, a 3-for-4 showing at the free-throw line by Thompson and a running off-balance jumper by freshman guard Brandon Herman gave the Colonials a 30-25 edge with 2:42 left in the first half. Penn, however, eventually entered the break with a 31-30 advantage, with the lead coming on a sloppy in-bounds pass by Johnson that was stolen by Belcore and finished with a layup. The Quakers opened the second half on a 13-2 run to push their lead to double digits for the first time, 44-32, just three and-a-half minutes into the stanza. Tyler Bernardini scored five points, including a three-pointer, while Miles Cartwright and Rosen also connected from beyond the arc. Penn’s biggest lead came with 13:13 to play as another trifecta from Rosen gave the Quakers a 49-34 edge. Penn converted just two field goals the rest of the game and was able to hold off the Colonials by scoring each of their final 10 points from the chalk.

Penn Game Notes - Penn’s 66-60 victory over Robert Morris marked the first meeting between the two programs ... The Quakers shot 51.2 percent (22-for-43) from the field, including an even 50 percent (10-for-20) from beyond the arc ... The Colonials held a 33-31 edge in rebounding, including a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass ... Penn hit just two field goals in the final 13:12 of regulation, finishing 2-for-10 shooting while suffering six turnovers over that span ... Each of Penn’s final 10 points of the contest came at the charity stripe ... Overall Robert Morris forced the Quakers into 16 turnovers ... RMU held a 22-14 edge in points in the paint. Defensively Getting It Done - Robert Morris is coming off a 2010-11 season in which it led the Northeast Conference in scoring defense, yielding an average of just 65.5 points per game. The Colonials are continuing in that vain this season, as their first three opponents have averaged just 58.3 points per game, a mark that leads the NEC. In victories over Rider (11/11/11) and @ Saint Peter’s (11/19/11), RMU allowed just 57 and 52 points, respectively, the first time in school history that the Colonials have opened a season holding back-to-back opponents to under 60 points. The CW Network - Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, arguably the purest shooter on the roster and one of the best in the Northeast Conference, has picked up right where he left off from the 2010-11 campaign. Williams led the NEC last year in three-point field goal percentage at 46.6 percent (48-for-103) and through the first three games of this season has drained 11 of his 22 attempts (50%) from long range. Williams paced the Colonials with a career-high 28 points in RMU’s season opener, an 83-57 win over Rider (11/11/11). For those efforts he was tabbed NEC Co-Player of the Week (11/13/11) with Travis Nichols of St. Francis (N.Y.). Streakers - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams each enter Tuesday’s game @ James Madison with consecutive double-figure scoring game streaks intact. Jones has scored at least 10 points in each of his last nine games dating back to last season, while Williams has turned the trick in seven straight contests. Jones is averaging 16.1 points over his last nine games, while Williams has produced an 17.6 points per game average in his last seven contests. Over the last nine games dating back to the 2010-11 season, Jones and Williams have combined to shoot 53.5 percent (46-for-86) from beyond the arc. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Tuesday’s game @ James Madison owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 70 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 55 straight starts. Jones owns 65 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 30. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 70 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in 47 consecutive games. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 70-11 (.864) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 67-9 (.881) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 15-5 (.750) when outrebounding its opponent. A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t have been able to post an 83-57 victory over Rider in its 2011-12 season opener without the contributions it received from its four freshmen. Combined, guard Brandon Herman and forwards Lucky Jones, Keith Armstrong and Darren Washington finished with 23 points and 26 rebounds while shooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from the field. Jones and Armstrong combined for 20 of RMU’s 43 rebounds, as Jones grabbed 13 while Armstrong added seven. Jones fell two rebounds shy of the RMU freshman record for caroms in a game, as former Colonial Anthony Dickens (1985-90) grabbed 15 boards in a game twice during the 1985-86 season.

Did You Know? Redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams is the fourth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage against league foes. Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from long range in 2010-11 against the NEC, joins former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

2010-11 RMU Basketball

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Robert Morris improved to 68-13 (.840) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to 70 points or less thanks to a 69-52 victory @ Saint Peter’s (11/15/11), including a mark of 17-7 ( .708) under Toole. Three Is For Me - Robert Morris has hit at least one three-pointer in 531 straight games dating back to Feb. 25, 1993, an 84-82 victory over Marist at the Charles L. Sewall Center. In the previous contest, the Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in an 84-66 win over Long Island, also at the Sewall Center. Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 2-1 start to the 2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Colonials have forced 57 turnovers in their first three games, recording 27 steals. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led RMU by tying a career high with five steals in an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11), and as a team RMU posted 15. RMU’s 15 thefts against Rider are the most by the Colonials under second-year head coach Andrew Toole as well as the program’s highest total since also finishing with 15 in the 2009-10 season opener @ Syracuse (11/11/09) . In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. A look at the last five Colonials to sink a game-winning shot late for Robert Morris: Player Opponent (Date) Velton Jones @ Quinnipiac (3/6/11) * Russell Johnson @ Monmouth (2/19/11) Dallas Green vs. Mount St. Mary’s (3/11/09) * Jeremy Chappell @ Sacred Heart (1/10/09) Bateko Francisco vs. Youngstown State (11/25/08) Jeremy Chappell @ Mount St. Mary’s (3/2/06) * * NEC Tournament; # three-pointer

The Dish Network - Sophomore guard Anthony Myers provides the Colonials with depth at the point guard position and is coming off a record-breaking freshman campaign. Myers finished the 2010-11 with 116 assists, establishing an RMU freshman record in the category. He broke the old mark of 106 that was set by former guard Samba Johnson (1992-94) in 1992-93. Myers has picked up where he left off from last season, posting 11 assists through the first three games of the 2011-12 campaign. Two Pair - Guards Velton Jones and Anthony Myers joined a select group of players in school history last season thanks to the ability of the duo to create for their teammates. Jones and Myers became the fourth pair of teammates to each eclipse 100 assists on the year and the first since former Colonials Derek Coleman (2003-07) and Tony Lee (2004-08) combined for 275 dimes during the 2006-07 campaign. Jones recorded a team-high 127 assists in 2010-11, while Myers finished with 116, an RMU freshman record. Jones enters the 2011-12 campaign with 226 career assists, which ranks third among active players in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.16 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.02 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
