BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN DESIGN STUDIO BALLOTING POSTERS

THE CABINET OF CURIOSITIES In this studio students will undertake their own research into three contexts of a site adjacent to the Footscray Station.

The first will be the cultural demographics of the area as it is understood today, the second will be the most recent 200 years of the site’s cultural history, and the third will be the site’s ancient cultural history.

Based on this research, each student will be asked to make an abstract idea model in three dimensional virtual space.

This abstract model, entitled ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities’ will be an exercise in generating architectural form and semiotics arising from found objects within the three contexts of the site.

These abstract models will be presented in a group discussion format, and fine tuned over a period of weeks.

Mondays and Thursdays 2:00pm > 5:00pm

The abstract models will then added to incrementally so that ultimately they consist of a number of discreet abstract elements in the form of: four facades, a roof, an interior and a basement.

The studio will then undertake research into known apartment building types, and plans and sections will be sourced.

Based on a study of these, each student’s ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ will then be incrementally transformed from an abstract architectural model, into a set of plans, sections and views of a schematic design for a residential building with basement car park and ground floor retail.

Through this process, this studio seeks to link the prosaic and pragmatic constraints designing a functional and build-able scheme, with the ephemeral and intuitive process of making meaningful architectural languages in a specific local cultural context.

Before his death in 2004, artist Mutly Cerkez had developed a system for dating his artworks - where he included a future date in the artwork’s title to indicate when he would remake it in the future, although not necessarily in its original form. He thought about how value was attributed to particular art genres above others and the categorization of works as ‘minor or ‘major’ artworks. Through this he also challenged the idea whether a work of art should be resolved or complete or being of a singular point in time. In this way Cerkez disrupted the conventional linear timeline, both of individual works and his art practice. All works were considered of equal significance.

Similarly, this studio too, will be remade. In this, we will not think of a building/architecture as a static, singular object, or being ‘of its time’ - but rather one that is accretive and in a constant state of flux - one that will be changed, adapted and re-built over time.

This studio seeks to further ideas of the un-built (de-construction), in-progress (re-construction) and re-built (that is perpetually incomplete).

Cerkez questioned many of the mythologies of art, including the necessity of an artwork to be original or unique. In his series of works titles ‘New album cover designs for bootleg recordings of Led Zeppelin’, he spoke of his discovery of bootleg recordings of Led Zeppelin concerts; the band were known for performing their songs differently at every concert; and Cerkez studied the variations between each. The nature of bootlegs meant that copyrights were never considered and so the same title would reappear over and over - and repackaged over and over; as bootlegger bootlegged bootlegger.

As a series of works; the studio tasks will be composed as a ‘triptych’ of digital craft, history & architectural elements; by way of developing students’ understanding and exploration of fundamental elements that comprise a building. Like Cerkez’s own re-makes, or De Chirico’s ‘self-forgeries’ of his early paintings; Student will make and re-make, on a site in Melbourne’s CBD.

The inherent formation of digital matter reveals its indexicality through phenotypic traits.

This studio will explore the intentional subversion and curation of digital tools to create adventurous forms for 3D printing. Students will create, refine, and position a digital toolset that interfaces bottom up algorithmic generation of geometry and top down intervention through sculpting. During the first portion of the semester students will introduced the fundamentals of parametric logic, digital sculpting and 3d print optimization to produce a wide array of digital sculptures. The second half of the semester will see students design a curated sculpture park and architectural grotto. The weekly aggregation of objects will act as a taxonomy of formal characteristics that will be referred to when designing their architectural language. | Software No prior experience in ZBrush or Grasshopper required. | Evaluation Students will be assessed on their design, visual communication and comprehension of data structure to control layered parametric procedures. An Arts, Cultural & Treaty Centre

You will be asked to design an arts, cultural & treaty centre in the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct.

The design of Australian cities post colonization have failed to include Indigenous Australians voices, cultures and traditions within them.

The studio examines a future Melbourne where the cultures and traditions of our First Nations people are made visible within our colonized city. The studio fits into a lineage of Australian architecture that is ideas based, figurative and pluralist and favours expressive forms.

ECOLOGIES FOR THE ENDANGERED The computational enclosure

Cemeteries inherently are governed by metrics and the utilitarian infrastructure that has been implemented in order to service, access and maintain the necropolis.

Cemeteries are accompanied by various additional built programs such as the flower shop, crematorium, chapel, mortuary. With the introduction of assisted death legislation in Victoria in 2019, Greater Melbourne Cemetery Trust are now in the process of understanding how this might be accommodated within their remit. What is the infrastructure that would define this program?

Fawkner Train Station opened in 1886. In 1906 Fawkner Cemetery opened absorbing into its site the train line and station. A train that provided for the transportation of coffins and mourners. A train station that serviced the city of the dead.

The design studio is an extension of a master’s studio held in Semester 1 and will explore the role of the infrastructure that is required to support the cemetery and how this will be defined by the program of assisted death. This will be balanced with understanding the historical significance of the infrastructure that defines the mechanics of the necropolis and how this might this be exploited in order to define a new appendage to the cemetery.

Students will be engaged with understanding the role of the masterplan, rigorous site, program and precedent analysis, reviewing the role of the cemetery and the infrastructure required to support it as a civic entity.

Design Studio Leader: Brent Allpress Mondays and Thursdays 2.30-5.30 pm This studio investigates design questions involving practices of alteration, extension and addition. Many significant buildings constructed prior to the 1980’s have reached an age where they have needed to be renovated, refitted and otherwise altered or extended. This studio develops design strategies and responses to alteration and extension as a specific category of design practice activity. Modernist architectural theory resisted the additive and promoted the tabula rasa as a means to ensure the autonomy of the new original modernist work. Adding to and altering a modernist building presents an internal conflict and contradiction to be worked through.

Ornament haunts architectural discourse and practice. Theories of the ornamental within the canon cross and interrupt the central texts of the architectural tradition, both constructing and dividing them with unresolved uncertainties. Modernist theory negated the supplementary role of applied ornament. Modernist practices however involved radical ornamental operations employing abstract spatial surfaces as semiautonomous systems. The representational role of ornament in contemporary architecture remains complex and contested. This studio provides a framework for investigating the complexities of the legacy of the Modernist prescription against the additive and the ornamental. It also provides an opportunity to reconsider and revise postmodern accounts of the role of ornament and the status of context. Recent nonstandard digital technologies that revise modernist economies of standardization also shift the debate on the role of figuration beyond representation and communication towards architectural actions.

Precedent projects will be analysed involving alteration, extension and addition strategies. A specific local or international modernist architectural project will be selected as the site for a new alternation, extension or addition. Site selection will be negotiated. The design brief of this new architectural complex is to remotivate existing program and provide facilities for a proposed Institute of Architectural Design Research that includes an architectural archive, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces, an auditorium, workshop and designer in residence facilities, along with other program relevant to the specific situation.

Counter compositional strategies will be explored. This Design Studio provides a vehicle for research into significant modernist architectural precedent, provoking a critical and creative design response that focuses on qualitative and performative operations and outcomes.

Rewilding Castlemaine As each year post-settlement in Australia grinds on, how should we conceive of our place in the landscape, of the continent we have claimed as our own: are we custodians, masters, brokers, servants – and what is its place in our world of thought?’

STUDIO AGENDA: it is these questions and more that frame the agenda of this studio. As architects how should we conceive of our place in the landscape and of the landscape itself? How should we respond to it, represent it and ultimately, what should we make in it – do in the landscape? What attitudes to the landscape do you bring and what new ones can be revealed and discovered? This agenda is positioned against a ubiquitous backdrop of digital and technological inventions that pervades architectural education and that risks casting questions of landscape as irrelevant. But nature, and landscape cannot be background, or other but must be essential to any questions for the future of urban development. For this practice, a buildings capacity to belong to a wider territory, is a given. This can also be considered as a relational condition, extending beyond the built context, to include ecological systems, cultural ideas, nature and the land – a form of urbanism, but one that is free of the conventions of seeing buildings as the only reference point. Research projects (as background to this studio) – have explored architectures engagement with context in projects that work from rural and city landscapes and in the context of the cultural and environmental and the need for continued and deeper engagement with Australia’s indigenous people. The reality of climate change has provoked a critical reflection on this practice, and demands an urgent rethink of our relationship to nature, in all its forms, and for its status in the architectural profession – and that design has a critical role to play, and that the essence of design knowledges and processes can assist in navigating a new relationship to nature whilst considering dramatic shifts of the traditional frameworks of what constitutes architecture. (excerpts from Veil of Isis, 2019 Anna Johnson and Richard Black) ISSUE: writer Robert Macfarlane tells us that the ‘idea of the Anthropocene repeatedly strikes us dumb. In the complexity of its structures and the range of its scales within time and space – from nanometric to the planetary, from picoseconds to aeons – the Anthropocene confronts us with huge challenges. How to interpret, or even refer to it? Its energies are interactive, its properties emergent and its structures withdrawn. We find speaking of the Anthropocene, even speaking in the Anthropocene, difficult. It is, perhaps best imagined as an epoch of loss – of species, places and people – for which we are seeking a language of grief and, even harder to find, a language of hope. (Macfarlane, Underland, p364) This studio explores this difficult territory as well as the implications for architecture and its design knowledges. What then might be a language of hope that can yield opportunities to rethink architecture in the age of the Anthropocene? Our research continues to focus on the role of nature, of how we/you relate to it, and it is through this lens that the studio is framed. Project work aims to build your awareness of nature - its entanglement with ideologies, culture and humanity then ultimately - how might this inform ways of conceiving and making architecture?

REWILDING CASTLEMAINE: design of an urban building for Castlemaine (110kms north west of Melbourne’s CDB) responding to the communities housing crisis. It’s comprised of the following components: Living (Multiple Dwellings/Lofts etc) with an equal part Landscape (or rewilding). Rewilding refers to the gradual transformation of the street, architecture and urban public space – into a new type of urban situation – a meeting of architecture/nature - a critical reworking of building, garden, and landscape – into an urban ecology. Project: the syllabus is structured around two parts, the first a suite of esquisses for you to imagine the site and its relationship to the town, its landscape and territory – and how these are grounded within the architectural issues framing the studio, and then secondly, using this site knowledge to make a design proposal for an urban building in the civic precinct of Castlemaine: of equal parts Living + Landscape. The Hortus Conclusus - or enclosed/walled garden - as a type-form has persisted since the fifteenth century and will be a reference point throughout the second part of the semester – exploring it for its architectural, urbanistic and ecological potential with relevance to the studio agenda - an updating and transformation of this type-form into the present-day. You should expect to develop ways of working to imagine the site and its relationship to the town, its landscape, territory as well as opening this to cultural and architectural references – equally immersed in the real and the imaginary. Additionally, there will be collaborations with the Metamorphosis studio, led by Anna Johnson, and hopefully several site visits to Castlemaine later in the semester.

DE-URBAN Repairing the Waterways of the West, Melbourne Bachelor Design Studio, Sem 2-2020 Mondays, 10:00-16:00 Thursdays, 13:30-16:30 Intensive, starting Week 6 Tutors: Mauro Baracco and Imogen Fry

If read through the Latin suffix, the term De-Urban means: Around Urban.

This same term – De-Urban – also intends to suggest design thinking and related actions involved with the act of ‘de-urbanize’ as taking the urban away – removing urban footprint and volume inappropriately located in ecologically sensitive areas.

This studio is focussed on suburban precincts of Melbourne’s Western Volcanic Plains, with the aim to identify large scale directions for conservation, landscape links and amalgamation to then guide locations and large and small scale design strategies for building and infrastructure that will not inhibit the conservation, repair and functioning of these ecosystems.

The studio projects will investigate areas that are part of the catchments of the Waterways of the West in Melbourne, including Werribee and Maribyrnong Rivers, and major tributaries such as Moonee Ponds Creek and other tributaries such as Stony, Kororoit, Lollypop, Laverton, Emu, Steele Creeks and Little River, amongst others.

This design studio is part of a research project to be undertaken through 2020 and 2021 in partnership with community groups, gov bodies and other stakeholders. Students will acquire the following: - ability to think and design strategically - ability to understand, accurately map/represent and consider the surrounding contexts of projects sites as an essential key component of both design process and design proposals - ability to produce ideas and representations capable to trigger further discourse with various partners involved with the research project This studio is an extension of an ongoing research project (started in sem 1/2020 through design elective) on the urban and environmental regeneration of the Waterways of the West – a partnered project with The Waterways of the West Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) + LWCircus. This research project will be profiled and publicly presented at the Architecture Venice Biennale (Italian Pavilion) in 2021.

The studio will start in wk 6 (from Monday 24 August). It will be run in a semi-intensive mode, on Mondays and Thursdays from wk 6 to wk 13 (included). Studio classes and reviews will be run also through the break week between Monday 31 August and Friday 4 September.

During this pandemic it seems appropriate to revisit Melbourne’s original Quarantine Station. Situated at the end of the Mornington Peninsula in the Point Nepean National Park, QUARANTINE will investigate the landscape, buildings, and structures in and around Melbourne’s original sanatorium, and propose new uses to what is currently underutilised land and infrastructure. inf Due to unexploded ordnance in some parts, Point Nepean has only quite recently been opened up to the general public. The many years of isolation have resulted in the preservation of this dramatic landscape. We will research the site from Bunurong times, through the sanatorium years where ships plagued by disease where quarantined; through to the defence systems set up against pirates during the Gold Rush; and on to the rst shot of the First World War. Stories of diseased early settlers, a litany of ship wrecks and the drowning of Australia’s 17th Prime Minister Harold Holt will be unpacked, researched, mapped, and recorded to uncover programmatic opportunities and propose new usages for the land.

Students will review the 2017 Master Plan commissioned by the State Government and being implemented by Parks Victoria. We will question the content and identify opportunities for new programmes and architectural intervention. The studio will focus on tectonics, materials, and buildability. Rather than conservation for conservation’s sake, students will be asked to consider active heritage conservation, involving the reuse and repurposing of existing buildings. building Students will also propose new infrastructure where architecture can respond to the landscape in a meaningful and useful way. The sensitive nature of the landscape and the history will be our driver, and eco-tourism will be the outcome.

Due to the recent announcement of the second lockdown QUARANTINE studio will be conducted primarily online. Ideally we would visit the site which is located 1.5 hours from Melbourne.

Students intending to particpate in this studio are highly encouraged to consider how they might visit the site in the event that Public Transport is not an option.

Between 2017 and 2019 the State Library of Victoria undertook a major renovation, focusing primarily on the refurbishment of internal spaces. This studio will take on a more radi d cal and speculative brief for the library.

Students will develop their own propositions for the State Library - proposin ng urban, a chitectural, and programmatic interventions ar into the existing building. The studio will exxplore the potenttial of such interventions to reim imagine the libr brar a y’s role in the city today.

Throughout the semester students will closely Thro exam amin ine e th the exiisting i fabric of the libraryy, its hist storry, rel elat a ionship to the surrrounding city, and d th the rolle of th he library in con o temporary cultlture more bro roadly. These in investtig igations wililll

be the basis for a critical approach to design projects s, informing architectural techniques for the new additions and alterations.

Students will also be required to develop an understanding of the history of the library as a specic architectural typolog gy, and to ne negotiate the complex considerations that come witith h working on a signicant public buililding. The city of today is held in suspension: a series of rooms, spaces, programs & buildings held apart in perfect neutrality, their only connection a thin bluestone gruel. Our city is disconnected & discontinuous. Rather than bemoan the fact, this studio is interested in ďŹ nding ways to subvert or aggravate these conditions within our city.

The studio seeks to build upon the strengths of the body of work of the previous studio, Fabrication, conducting a series of operations testing and ultimately mounting a challenge against some of the logics of the Melbourne CBD.

(style) The studio will take the position that ‘style’ to buildings, is like DNA to living organisms. It contains a particular sequence of rules that when combined generate categorically accepted architectural outcomes. In this studio we will use style as a system to test machine generated reproductions for their potential to re-write accepted architectural codes, as we focus on the strange, anomalous, uncanny false-hoods that emerge from the copy.

(studio structure) The semester will be broken into three phases; foundation, experimentation and implementation. The foundation phase will introduce students to the underpinning tools, methods, and research topics and will be explored in groups. In the experimentation phase students will take part in a highly iterative design processes, as they test a variety of design methods and digital tools through a series of esquisses completed as group work. In the implementation phase, students will work individually for the remainder of the semester as they apply these explorations to a medium scale cultural building, where they will be required to refine a particular design method that suits their individual design brief.

No prior algorithmic experience is required. All you need is a willingness to learn them! f

BIRDS

RMIT architecture Bachelors design studio BRIDS frames the city as a texturally and materially rich subject that despite its assets, lacks a spatial framework in which to claim temporally significant sanctuary. The studio seeks to repair the web of time where it has broken, through architecture.

BIRDS celebrates disorder, incongruity and uncertainty - but executed with surety, will and conviction. The studio is small to medium. The studio will plan and design a new building, and the archaeological remnants on which it's built.

BIRDS has these objectives: Create documents that chart a sympathetically fabricated history of facts for the site. Create a strong narrative understanding of your work which allows confident navigation through the studio material. Design an architectural response to the physical and folio based sites that negotiates those two conditions with aplomb.

BIRDS focuses on non-architectural sources for precedent and content. They typically include: theatre, film, music, writing, painting, history and archaeology. These may be real or imagined.

BIRDS is structured around weekly exercises that move quickly across material, iterating furiously. Work is predominantly individual.
