Creating opportunities for “passionate giving” is part of the goal we have at Rocky Mountain Adventist Healthcare Foundation. As we work with our entities to support the mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, we focus on helping to create cases of support that will open the door to “passionate giving”. Our Hospitals, Avista Adventist Hospital, Littleton Adventist Hospital, Parker Adventist Hospital and Porter Adventist Hospital, along with Porter Hospice, Porter Place, Operation Walk, Denver and Global Health Initiative do so much to make a difference in people’s lives that it makes it exciting for us to work with them to create these opportunities. We are also looking forward to this coming year and working with our new facility, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and helping them make a impact in their community. FY2013 turned out to be a great fundraising year for the Rocky Mountain Adventist Healthcare Foundation. Thanks to our generous donors, our donations increased greatly over this past year. Colorado Gives Day: Another Success for RMAHF All of our entities here at RMAHF participated in the 2012 Colorado Gives Day, a 24-hour statewide event to increase awareness of non-profits. Peace of Mind at Avista Adventist Hospital Proceeds from last year’s Heart of Hearts Gala, held on Thursday, November 22, at the downtown Denver Sheraton, will be spent on items and services that will enhance patient experience at Avista Adventist Hospital’s Women’s Health Program. Laura Hicks, Director of Imaging at Avista, tells us that Foundation monies raised at Heart of Hearts have been allocated for enhancing the patient’s environment, as well as providing patient navigation services.

The enhanced environment will be designed to stimulate a woman’s senses through tranquil images and relaxing sound, distracting her from the perceived discomfort, pain, and anxiety associated with having a mammogram administered. Mammography is often postponed or avoided altogether by women, due to these concerns. By focusing on the environment and ambiance of the setting, many of the reasons that women avoid mammography can be addressed. “Enhancing our environment to assist in relaxation and the alleviation of anxiety, at a time that can be very stressful, will be of major benefit to our patients”, says Laura.

Laura is also excited about offering navigation services to our Woman’s Health patients at Avista. A navigator is a person or process dedicated to guiding you and your family through health care experiences. For the Avista Women’s Health Program, having a navigation service will ensure that the patient’s breast health experience is as seamless and as painless as possible. Navigation services are offered to help answer questions, coordinate care, and assist the patient throughout their treatment, so that the patient can concentrate on healing. Laura expresses deep appreciation for the Foundation’s work, indicating that the money raised will be instrumental in advancing our women’s health services program: “These new services will not only keep Avista on the cutting edge of enhancing patient experience, but more importantly, they will improve the overall healthcare in our community by encouraging women to get tested who may otherwise be reluctant to do so.” Office Phone: 303.673.1011 avistahosptialfoundation.org

DBS SUGERY AND PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Littleton Adventist Hospital First in State to Offer “Asleep” DBS While DBS is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, its benefit is in the quality of life it affords patients. It can allow patients to return to or continue working, participate in family activities more actively or help them maintain their independence. Most patients see immediate benefits from DBS surgery. DBS has been used in more than 80,000 Parkinson’s patients since 1995 and it has been proven to be more effective than treatment with medication alone. And 69% of Essential Tremor patients studied experienced tremor reduction with DBS. A new approach for deep brain stimulation (DBS) available at Littleton Adventist Hospital reduces the number of surgeries typically needed and allows patients to now be asleep during the procedure. Using a new type of portable CT machine called the CereTom, surgeons obtain precise images of the brain during the surgery. Prior to this, the procedure required separate surgeries to place markers in the head, implant the generator, and connect the batteries. The new procedure eliminates the first surgery and the need for patient feedback, allowing patients to be asleep during surgery. “Having to be awake was very stressful and uncomfortable for patients,” says David VanSickle, MD, PhD, the neurosurgeon performing this new procedure at Littleton Hospital. “The CereTom also enables us to improve the precision of lead placement. This reduces the risk of damage to nearby healthy areas and cuts operating time in half.” DBS is used for patients with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, or dystonia. It involves implanting an electrode in the brain that short-circuits the electrical signals that cause symptoms. It is powered by a small battery pack implanted below the armpit. There are over 1,300 patients in the Denver metro area each year that could benefit from this new DBS surgery. We are excited that Littleton Adventist Hospital is the leader in Colorado providing this new DBS surgery to patients both in our local community and surrounding states!

BREAST CANCER CARE SUPPORT
Comprehensive Support, Committed Care There seemed to be no crueler fate. After supporting her mother through her battle against breast cancer, Tina lost her mother in October 2012. It was made all the sadder knowing that her mother did not receive the medical care and support that was so desperately needed. Then fate struck again. On the way home from her mother’s funeral, Tina received a call from the hospital. She was asked to come in because the doctors had found some abnormalities with her mammogram. Tina was soon diagnosed with breast cancer. Discouraged by the lack of care her mother received, Tina knew what she
wanted—a comprehensive treatment center to support her through the entire process. She found it at the Trio Breast Center at Parker Adventist Hospital. “I don’t know what I would have done without the center and Jane, the breast patient navigator, who helped me with every step of the process,” says Tina. The Trio Breast Center at Parker Adventist Hospital has provided nearly 17,000 life-saving breast screenings during the past five years and cared for more than 250 women in its community who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The Parker Hospital Foundation supports this program by underwriting
mammograms, diagnostic testing, and treatment for uninsured women. The Foundation also funds support groups and provides counseling to all women and their families. Tina underwent a double mastectomy in November and started chemotherapy treatment in December. With the support from nurses, doctors, and fellow survivors she met at a breast cancer support group, Tina does not feel alone in her journey. “I only wish my mother could have experienced the same care and support as I did,” says Tina.
FAMILY TO FAMILY ADOPTION SUPPORT PROGRAM
Building New Families With Compassion A senior at Lutheran High School, Nicole was busy with schoolwork, friends, and taking care of her ill stepfather. She had little time to worry about herself. Then, last fall, Nicole noticed a bump on her stomach and quickly discovered she was five months pregnant. Nicole knew in her heart that adoption was the only route for her. While working with a local adoption agency, she learned about Parker Adventist Hospital, a suggestion she credits for making her experience as positive as possible. “They were absolutely amazing,” Nicole says. “They took care of everything and were sensitive to my questions and feelings.”

The hospital Nicole originally planned to deliver at made several missteps, including assuming she was keeping the baby. This assumption caused Nicole great pain and that’s when she turned to Family to Family Adoption Support program, a program that is completely funded by the Parker Hospital Foundation. Founded in 2005 by adoptive mother Rebecca Vahle, the program is the only one of its kind in Colorado and has been nationally recognized. The program provides training to the obstetrics staff to ensure that both birth parents and adopting families feel supported in their decisions. The program also provides an on-site adoption liaison, resources and extensive support to all involved before, during, and after the adoption process. “I still keep in touch with a Rebecca,” says Nicole. Nicole is one of more than 100 birth-mothers who has benefited from the Family to Family Adoption Support. Every birth parent as well as every adopting parent has ranked the program positively, proving that compassion makes a huge difference in forming new families. Kids Alive! In 2009, Cynthia Erickson, a wife and mother of five-year-old son, Eric, was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. Cynthia’s treatment was exceptionally difficult as it is with most head and neck patients. The following year, Eric’s parents enrolled him in Kids Alive, a program established to support children of parents with cancer. During this time, he not only showed a great deal of concern for his mother, but also for a close friend of the family who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The year Eric spent in Kids Alive made a real impact on his life. So meaningful was the experience, Eric asked his mother if they could plan a fundraiser to support Kids Alive. He wanted the event to be a neighborhood carnival. The carnival included games, face-painting and concessions. Tickets were sold for 25 cents for each activity. On July 4, 2011, with the help of parents and neighborhood friends, the event raised over $500. The following year Eric told his mother he wanted to do the event again. This time there were 20 children and their families meeting at Cindy’s house planning the logistics for Eric’s fundraiser. Their house looked like a beehive! Everyone helped Eric distribute posters, set up booths for the activities, solicit local businesses for prizes and donations and ask the fire department to display their trucks and equipment. It was truly a sight to behold to see the kids and families working hard for the carnival. Eric and his friends, with a lot of help from parents, raised $2,100 for Kids Alive at the second carnival. Approximately 25 prizes were given away. Eric hoped to pay for leasing a 57-passenger coach to transport kids to Snow Mountain Ranch for the Kids Alive weekend retreat in March. His goal was met and exceeded! Eric is now nine years old and growing fast. Cindy has fully recovered from head and neck cancer and is on the faculty at Metro State College in the Neuroscience Department. It is truly amazing to think, even at this young age, Eric realized the great support he received through Kids Alive and wanted to make sure he did his part to see others receive benefit as well. We are forever grateful to our supporters and never cease to be amazed at how young the sense of wanting to give back begins.

A Changing Life

Walking through the hospital hallway, I noticed a gentleman with a severe limp. So many people suffer with debilitating health issues due to lack of health insurance and are unable to afford surgery necessary to improve their quality of life. As I watched this gentleman, I was told he was one of the patients who would receive a new hip from Operation Walk USA. After introductions were made, I noticed the sparkle in the eyes of Todd Tychewicz and the emotion on his face as he spoke of the new hip he was going to receive. The gratitude was evident as he spoke of what he wanted to accomplish for his family and himself. He also spoke of the pain, which was a constant reminder of the limitations preventing him from maintaining his independence.
also missed the simple joys of household chores he hadn’t been able to do for a very long time, like chopping wood and shoveling snow. Surgery day had finally arrived. As I entered Todd’s room, I was greeted by family and friends and their radiant smiles as each one introduced themselves. Todd shared his excitement and gratitude to the medical team helping with his surgery. He said, “I believe in miracles and Operation Walk is a miracle in my life”. Within twenty-four hours of surgery, Todd was standing up and trying out his new hip. As we started walking down the hallway, he shared his determination to work through the pain of surgery. He said he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives--to do something nice for someone he would never even know. Watching Todd walk down the hallway with excitement and anticipation for his new future is what Operation Walk USA is all about ...Changing Lives.

Jose’s Unbeatable Determination By Peggy Kettler, Operation Walk Denver Logistics Coordinator How did you spend your carefree afternoons of summer vacation during your growing up years? Did you spend your days playing baseball, splashing in a swimming pool, exploring trails, riding bicycles, shooting hoops or chasing a Frisbee? Can you imagine what your adolescence would have felt like confined to a bed with every joint in your body sore and swollen? The sounds of other children playing outdoors kept filtering through your open bedroom window. It seems your only thoughts were about the severe pain you endured day after day. Since the age of nine, Jose Rodriguez dealt with the ravages of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Even though he had an unbeatable determination to live his life as normal as possible, his challenges were numerous. Unable to bend his hips or knees, he could not sit in a chair or flex his knees. Thankfully, at age 29, Jose found his way into the hands of our skilled
surgeons of Operation Walk Denver. Over a period of a year, he had both of his knees and hips replaced by Operation Walk Denver. In September 2012, Jose traveled from Panama to the United States to attend our Walk of Dreams Gala and personally thank the Operation Walk donors for making his surgeries possible. Seeing Jose walk across the stage and hug the doctors who performed his surgeries left an impression that would not soon be forgotten. Jose now works as an ambassador for Operation Walk Denver, helping care for our new patients in Panama.

Porter Hospice Porter Hospice has been a leader in providing excellent services for more than 25 years. Patients and their families experience a strong sense of both being cared for, and being cared about wherever they call home. Services can be provided in the patient’s family home, assisted living facility, or at Porter Hospice Residence in Centennial. The end-of-life journey is a profoundly sacred time for a patient in our care, as well as their family and friends. Porter Hospice provides the utmost compassionate physical and spiritual care to a patient while giving the family exceptional support and bereavement counseling following their passing. Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, grief counselors and volunteers understands the value of living the final days of life with dignity and respect. We believe in treating the whole person … body, mind and spirit.
The Butterfly Program in collaboration with Children’s Hospital Colorado, provides palliative care for children in our community living with a serious illness. Palliative care is effectively comfort care, providing relief of the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness. The patient’s family is also given extraordinary support specialized for siblings and parents. And faced with the unique circumstances of losing a child, bereavement counseling is available for the entire family. Our services are available regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Over the past year, your generous contributions of $2,380,011 to Porter Hospice Foundation helped with this phenomenal care to 303 home hospice patients, 385 patients at Porter Hospice Residence as well as the families of these patients. In addition, your contributions helped 78 Butterfly families receive comprehensive pediatric palliative care for their children. Providing non-profit, faith-based hospice and palliative care in the Denver area, Porter Hospice and the Butterfly Program thrive on support from community members. Our devoted caregivers feel the powerful pull of our mission as much as all of our charitable supporters.

AVISTA GOLF CLASSIC There is nothing more emotionally devastating as the loss of a child. How could anyone prepare for that event or know how to deal with such a tragic event? All the hopes, dreams and promises of this unrealized life are replaced by a sudden and lasting emptiness that will remain forever. The 2013 Avista Hospital Golf Classic raised well over $14,000 for the New Life Center Bereavement Program. The program provides support to those who have experienced the loss of a newborn. The donations from the tournament allowed them to remodeled the Bereavement Room.
LITTLETON GOLF CLASSIC The 2012 Littleton Hospital Foundation Golf Classic hosted by The Country Club at Castle Pines was a day like no other. The championship caliber golf course featuring exquisite views drew the sold out crowd as well as this year’s beneficiary, the Neurological Institute at Littleton Adventist Hospital. The tournament raised an impressive $40,000 towards the development and support for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Littleton is the only hospital in Colorado and one of the few in the nation to have the CereTom CT scanner allowing “asleep” deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery possible for Parkinson’s patients. The day was topped off with a Hole-in-One on the second hole of the course for Mr. Albert Armijo. Mr. Armijo drove off in a beautiful 2012 Volvo S60 donated by the McDonald Automotive group!
PARKER GOLF CLASSIC One hundred and four golfers enjoyed a sunrise breakfast and early tee time at the annual Parker Hospital Foundation Golf Classic on Monday, August 27th, 2012 at the Club at Pradera. Proceeds totaling over $44,000 supported the Women’s Heath Initiatives and the fight against breast cancer. Parker Hospital Foundation plays a critical role in providing services to hundreds of women each year by underwriting the hospital breast cancer support group, community mammography programs and genetic counseling for the uninsured patients.
WALK OF DREAMS September 22, 2012 marked the 9th year of Operation Walk Denver. Numerous lives have been touched during travels to Panama, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, and this night showed no difference in the magnitude of generosity. The Gala was a huge success and raised $200,000 to fund Operation Walk trips in 2013. Over $90,000 was pledged through the paddle raiser portion of the live auction to purchase the much needed replacement power tools for the surgeons who volunteer their time and skills on these amazing trips. Special guest, Jose Luis Rodriquez, a recent joint replacement patient from Panama shared his story on how Operation Walk Denver changed his life by giving him the ability to walk normally, play soccer with his young son and experience quality of life for the very first time.
HEART OF HEARTS For many years the focus of the Heart of Hearts Gala has been directed towards the area of Cardiac Services. In the 32nd year of the event, we turned our attention in a new direction and to another important cause, Breast Cancer and the programs we are building in our hospitals to support individuals fighting this disease.
SOUP FOR THE SOUL On Thursday, February 7, 2013, a night of sparkling promise was ladled up at Soup for the Soul to benefit Porter Hospice, St. Anthony’s Hospice and the Butterfly Program. Over 650 guests enjoyed sampling gourmet soups and appetizers from over 15 of Denver’s finest restaurants and bid on one of-akind treasures during the silent auction. Jeremy Bloom, two time Olympian and former NFL player, received the annual “Award of Courage” for his dedication to helping seniors fulfill their lifelong dreams and encouraging them to make the most of every day through his organization, “Wish of a Lifetime.” Proceeds from this year’s event was well over $240,00 and went to support patients who are nearing the end of life’s journey by helping to illuminate their night sky with stars of peace, dignity and comfort.
The “Beatles” themed evening involved the creativity of the attendees which was demonstrated in the tie dye clothes, colorful wigs, bell bottom pants and peace sign necklaces throughout the ballroom. Truly a magical journey! The attendees were very generous throughout the evening as was witnessed during the paddle raiser portion of the auction.
