Dear Colleagues, The Newsletter is published this week earlier, as I may not be available later in the week due to health related issues, and I wanted you to receive the Magazine anyway. Yes - I do it especially for you. Of special note this week: 

guidance:

Let’s focus on Science with and for Society (SWAFS) ! https://horizon-swafs2018.b2match.io/ The ‘Science with and for Society’ programme will be instrumental in addressing the European societal challenges tackled by Horizon 2020, building capacities and developing innovative ways of connecting science to society. It will make science more attractive (notably to young people), increase society's appetite for innovation, and open up further research and innovation activities. It allows all societal actors (researchers, citizens, policy makers, business, third sector organisations etc.) to work together during the whole research and innovation process in order to better align both the process and its outcomes with the values, needs and expectations of European society. This approach to research and innovation is called Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). More here http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal//desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/calls/h2020swafs-2018-2020.html Forthcoming calls too (all with an April 2018 deadline) SwafS-01-2018-2019: Open schooling and collaboration on science education SwafS-06-2018: Science4Refugees SwafS-09-2018-2019: Supporting research organisations to implement gender equality plans SwafS-10-2018: Analysing gender gaps and biases in the allocation of grants SwafS-15-2018-2019: Exploring and supporting citizen science

Other Horizon 2020 Calls worth checking Horizon 2020 is the EU's €77 billion research and innovation funding scheme running from 2014 to 2020. BEIS has further clarified Horizon 2020 underwrite for UK participants. 

Eurostars - Open to all projects in all technology areas and market fields, but projects must have a civilian purpose. Application deadline: 01.03.18.

Stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for sustainable and competitive agriculture, forestry, agri-food and bio-based sectors - SMEs can play a crucial role in developing resource-efficient and cost-effective solutions to secure sufficient supplies of safe, healthy and high quality food and other bio-based products. Various deadlines.

--------------------------------Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing Call The HORIZON 2020 Societal Challenge 1: Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing work programme 2018-2020 has now been published. The EU funding team within the RKTO is keen to promote these funding opportunities. If you would like to discuss any of these potential opportunities and are interested in being part of a project research team then please contact either Michael Butterworth or Emeline Matheou in the RKTO. A Horizon 2020 Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing info day & partner finding event was recently held in Brussels and a list of participants and their organisations is available. This is a great way to identify possible collaborators and to facilitate the setup of Horizon 2020 project consortia. Please note that the UK Government and the European Commission have confirmed that the status of the UK as an EU Member State will not change until such time as the UK actually leaves the EU and that UK participants should continue applying for Horizon 2020 and other competitive EU funds - see BREXIT update page. Of course if you are interested in getting involved in any type of funded activity please do not hesitate to contact us in the RKTO.

service staff, and which have the potential to have an impact on the health or wellbeing of patients and users of the NHS. As a response mode researcher-led programme, RfPB does not specify topics for research, but encourages proposals for projects which address a wide range of health service issues and challenges. The programme aims to fund high quality quantitative and qualitative research with a clear trajectory to patient benefit. It particularly encourages applications that have a strong element of interaction with patients and the public, and which have been conceived in association with a relevant group of service users.

Funding Call: British Academy Writing Workshops 2018

The British Academy is inviting proposals from UK-based scholars in the humanities and social sciences to develop one or more training and research workshops in the Global South aimed at furthering scholarly interaction between researchers in the UK and in the Global South and promoting the uptake of research emanating from the Global South in academic journals.

Aims These Writing Workshops aim to cultivate professional networks and mentorship and provide access for early career researchers in the Global South to the academic requirements of journals, including international journals, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to publish in these journals. It is expected that journal editors and UK-based scholars will work intensively to support workshop participants from the Global South to produce papers in preparation for publication.

Through the Writing Workshops the British Academy aims to encourage and support early career researchers in the Global South to develop scholarly publications for high impact journals in the fields of the humanities and social sciences, and enable them to develop connections with academics and journal editors based in the UK and elsewhere.

Eligibility Requirements The lead applicant must be based at a UK university or eligible research institute, and be of postdoctoral or above status (or have equivalent research experience). The lead applicant must either be in a permanent position at the institution or have a fixed-term position for the duration of the award. Each application must have at least one co-applicant from an institution in the Global South.

All proposals must be ODA-eligible: only research that has a primary objective which is directly and primarily relevant to the problems of developing countries may be counted as ODA. ODA eligibility is an essential criterion – projects will only be deemed eligible for funding if they can demonstrate that they satisfy ODA eligibility criteria.

The workshop will be highly multidisciplinary as well as bringing together those who are developing platforms and standards with researchers deploying and evaluating in real world environments.
