Camerata Chorale dedicates their season to Maestro Pritchard anierata Chorale is prepar­ ing for its concert season anil has voted to dedicate this season to Maestro Lee Harold Pritchard. Maestro Pritchard, retired emeritus professor of music and theatre from SUNY New Paltz, has been Artistic Director of the Camerata Chorale for 50 years, insisting on the highest possible standard for performance and presentation. He has designed innovative programs, which have included both masterpieces and little known works rarely heard in concert halls. Leading by his passion for and deep knowledge of music for a half century, he has encouraged singers to rise to a re­ markably high standard.

he Summer Youth Employment Program, in partnership with Dutchess County Government, works with youth ages 14-20 to help them gain experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Youth are placed with local businesses in a field of his or her interest. This allows the opportunity for the manager and co-workers to mentor each participant and give real insight into the profession. In addition to working for 2025 hours per week, program participants attend soft-skills training

sessions at our offices in Poughkeepsie. These sessions, provided by Workforce staff in partnership with the Workforce Investment Board, are held once a week to teach participants the skills necessary to become great employees. Connor McCormack, a Summer Youth Employment participant, works at the Vassar College Store in Poughkeepsie. His duties include working the register, providing excellent customer service, completing online orders, and helping keep the store tidy. According to his supervisors, McCormack is an asset to the business, he shows initiative, com-

pletes tasks, and possesses a positive attitude. On top of McCormack’s success at work, he recently received his High School Equivalency Diploma. To celebrate his hard work, the Summer Youth Employment Program participants surprised him with a cake. McCormack said, “Hard work pays off, I am proud to have accomplished my goals.� The Summer Youth Employment Program aims to assist each participant in achieving his or her goals. ntoinette Barcelona joined the Workforce Development Center’s Work Now program in the hopes of creating a

better life for her family. Through perseverance and hard work, she first earned her High School Equivalency diploma. She then found employment with Burlington Coat Factory as a cashier. Barcelona quickly moved up

at Burlington and was promoted to a supervisory position. “I have had a great experience with the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. With the support from my mentor, I was able to achieve my

goals,� Barcelona said. Antoinette’s manager, Melissa Kauftman, has frequently worked with the Workforce Development Center to hire new employees. “Working with the Chamber has been great,� she said. “The employees we have hired through their programs have worked out very well.� This program is possible thanks to the partnership between Dutchess County Government, Department of Community & Family Services, and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

he Career Action Center, based out of Poughkeepsie High School, graduated 42 students last academic year. Here are a couple of program graduate highlights: Lauren Anderson: Arts and crafts, music and learning were all part of Anderson’s internship at Poughkidsie, an interactive studio cultivating creativity and offering activities, parties, and classes for all members of the family under one roof. In addition to having fun, Anderson enhanced her communication, time management, and organizational skills. Following her 20 hour in-

ternship, Anderson was hired part-time! AnnMarie Wheeler: Wheeler kicked off her internship at the City of Poughkeepsie Mayor, Rob Rolision’s office with an introduction to the mayor’s staff

and attending a press conference at the City of Poughkeepsie Fire House where she had the opportunity to meet U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer. Kevin Chavez: Chavez took advantage of The Community to

Work Program at Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. The program allowed him to explore careers in electrical engineering and systems, working on projects in and out of the Central Hudson offices. 50 new students will join the Career Action Center program for the 2016-2017 school year. Each will be connected with local employment and internship opportunities all while preparing for college and more.
