dvocacy is something the Chamber takes very seriously. It’s a benefit to all our members, as well as the rest of the business community. The Chamber has a volunteer Legislative Action Committee, of which I am member, and we meet regularly to discuss issues that affect us all. These could include new laws being proposed in New York State, federal guidelines for businesses and organizations, even development projects that are being discussed within our communities. Our membership often has the opportunity to communicate with our elected officials, and that is also facilitated by the Legislative Action Committee. Representa-

tives from Congress, Albany, and even those individuals who sit on the County Legislature and local town boards hear from the Chamber, advocating for issues and polices that help business’ compete locally and state-wide. This is one aspect of membership that many people don’t realize. Your dues help the Chamber have a large and credible voice within the community, and our

elected officials know who the Chamber is and what it stands for. Your Chamber regularly takes a stand when there is legislation that may deter businesses from starting or staying in New York, or make it more difficult to manage and operate. When you are considering joining or renewing your dues, please remember that the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is working for you each and every day, and making it easier to do business in the Hudson Valley region. Clear your data By Jaime M. Butler

P

retty much everyone loves an upgrade and our upgrade opportunities with our electronic devices is something most of us can’t resist, especially when you consider you can trade in or sell your old device to recoup some of the expense. However, it’s important to make sure you are clearing all of your data off your current device the right way so sensitive information or personal items don’t fall in the wrong hands. Keep in mind though, there is no 100% foolproof plan, some data might still be recoverable with the right tools in the right hands. The tips that are going to be described here are for the iOS, but you can find specifics for Android and Windows online as well. If you

have an older device with an alternate OS, you should always check the manual for specific details on how to wipe the device. Before you start any wiping process, make sure you have a full back up that includes your contacts and remove any sort of SIM card or external storage. Log out of your email, social media accounts and clear the data from these apps if you can. Log the serial number of the phone or tablet for your records as an added precaution. Before starting the reset process, make sure you un-pair any external devices like an Apple Watch or Fitbit. Next, turn off and sign out of other services including iMessage and the App Store. For added

protection you may want to sign out of all linked services and apps, like Facebook or Twitter. Sign out of iCloud completely. Start the reset process and when it’s complete, make sure you remove the device from your Apple account profile at applied.apple.com. Jaime Butler, business development specialist at Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc., contributed this article. For more information about IES, visit ies-ny. com or call (845) 226-9983.

Hot-Air Balloon Festival will soar to new heights

T

he 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival will be held at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds on July 6-8. We are very excited and are planning for excellent attendance this year! One of the region’s signature community events, the Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival has expanded significantly over the years, with more than 25,000 people attending in 2017. By moving to the iconic Fairgrounds, the event will be able to continue to grow, offering free on-site parking for the entire weekend as well as a stable infrastructure that hosts hundreds of thousands of people each year. The Chamber is planning a total of 100 balloon launches during the weekend, with mass launches scheduled in the evenings Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the popular sunrise launches on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, there will be tethered balloon rides available throughout the festival. All rides are weather and wind permitting, but activities will be available at all times, including live bands, vendors, food trucks, family activities, and more. This event has grown exponentially over the years and I cannot wait to welcome visitors from all over the country to our beloved Dutchess County. Visit our Balloon Festival website at balloonfesthv.com for tickets, schedule of events, sponsors, FAQs, and more. I sincerely hope to see you in July!

Sincerely,

Frank M. Castella, Jr., President & CEO

Greystone Programs takes another ‘Leap’ The sky is the limit when it comes to raising awareness for autism - literally, for those willing to take the leap and skydive at the third annual “Leap for Autism” hosted by Greystone Programs. The thrilling skydive adventure is set to take place on Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at Skydive the Ranch in Gardiner with a rain/wind date of Saturday, April 28. The event will raise funds and awareness during Autism Awareness Month. The public is encouraged to join in the air or on the ground. Professional skydivers are welcome, and amateur jumpers can skydive “tandem,” harnessed to a professional licensed skydiver. Spectators who want to support the cause as part of the “ground crew” can join for food, fun and music to support Greystone Programs. “We had such an overwhelming response and record-breaking attendance for last year’s Leap for

Autism event,” said CEO of Greystone Programs, Skip Pryce. “This year we are hopeful that we will exceed last year’s tremendous success and further spread our message around autism awareness, particularly right here in the Hudson Valley.” To learn more, visit www. greystoneprograms.org

Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

‘Black Panther’ is an example to students By Hope Tangunu, Career Action Center Participant, Senior

F

rom the depths of the untampered, robust South African wilderness to the remote, desolate West African deserts, brothers and sisters alike have endured obstacles that both man and nature have thrown their way. From civil rights leaders like Mar-

tin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks to trailblazers like Barack Obama and Cynthia McKinney, AfricanAmericans have represented the fighting will that they have always had instilled within themselves. From my perspective, Black History Month is more than a time to celebrate the achievements of the darker brother and sister. It is a time to look back at our

egregious past and reflect on how things have changed. Not only are African-Americans allowed to participate in jobs that they previously had no exposure to, like acting, they are also able to excel in their careers and inspire others to become successful. Marvel’s Black Panther is an example of a film that has portrayed Africans and people of color as powerful and persistent,

which is one of the reasons why the students in the Career Action Center chose to participate in the Black Panther Challenge. To us, the movie doesn’t represent a fictional world that was made up, it represents how powerful we really are and how we won’t lower our image of ourselves because of how society might view us. The Black Panther Challenge

is an initiative that was started in Harlem, NY. The purpose of the challenge was to raise funds to provide students of color an opportunity to watch the Black Panther film in theatres. Our class was able to raise $1,130 thanks to people’s generosity and support. The funds were used for 50 movie tickets, refreshments and transportation.

Student works toward HSE Spring-cleaning your resume Diploma, gains experience By Elizabeth Kwant Director of Workforce Connections

W

ith spring quickly approaching, it is time to think about all of the fun activities waiting for us outside. Living in the Hudson Valley allows for amazing outdoor adventures and so much fun. Springcleaning is another activity that many cannot wait to begin. Organizing your home, cleaning up the yard, and getting ready for the months of sunshine and excitement ahead. When writing chores down on a to-do list, many people often forget one very important task that is crucial to continued professional development-updating your resume. Resumes are working documents and should always be changing. Including volunteer experiences you’ve gained during

the holiday season or throughout the school year is a great way to add to your skillset. Updating and improving resumes and professional social media accounts takes just a few minutes and can offer countless benefits. The participants of the Workforce Connections Program learn this important lesson during weekly “Talk Time” workshops. Learning to identify professional skills and how to translate them into winning resumes is extremely valuable in securing quality, livable employment. Through these workshops and one-on-one soft-skill trainings with their case managers, the WFC participants improve their chances of entering the workforce. This professional development is what allows for the success of the individuals, working hard in the Workforce Connections Program.

By Rosemary Grabowska Youth One Stop Assistant Coordinator

I

n 2015 Miesha Forte enrolled in Youth One Stop. She had left high school without getting a diploma and needed some guidance. Miesha’s case manager helped her enroll in HSE class, and to begin a targeted job search. Miesha then got a job as a cleaner at LCS Companies Inc. and was learning how to juggle her work schedule and school at the same time. She passed several of the TASC HSE test sections, missing only math and science by a few points. Shortly after, Miesha received a wake up call. Her job ended, she stopped attending classes and then became pregnant. Excited to become a mother, she was in a race against time to secure her future so she could provide for her child.

Fortunately, Miesha had learned a lot from her experience on the job. Besides critical soft skills, Miesha had learned what kind of career she wanted to pursue. Miesha wanted to care for people, and decided to start a medical career by becoming a Nursing Assistant. A severe barrier facing Dutchess County youth from accessing employment opportunities is a lack of hard skills. These are specific, teachable abilities that can be defined and measured, such as typing, writing, math, reading and the ability to use software programs. Youth One Stop assists individuals to attain the education and training needed to forge a successful career through Individual Training Account (ITA) grants of up to $5,000 per individual. Miesha’s case manager helped her apply for an ITA, and Miesha enrolled in the

Certified Nursing Assistant class with Dutchess County BOCES Adult Learning Institute. Once she received her certificate, she began working at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at River Valley. Today Miesha is the proud mother of a beautiful little girl, and one test section away from getting her HSE Diploma. She is the type of success story that we cannot get enough of: combining time, persistence, and a willingness to try every opportunity. The results speak for themselves.
