Undergraduate Research Assistantship Request Professor Name: Stephen T. Russell, Ph.D Project Title and Description: Research assistants may have the opportunity to work on several ongoing projects depending on skills and interests. All research assistants can expect to work on the following projects: Risk and Protective Factors for Suicide among Sexual Minority Youth  Collaboration with New York University, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. A five year longitudinal study of 1200 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning youth in three metropolitan areas, looking at risk and protective factors for suicide. LGBTQ and Ethnic Studies Curriculum Inclusion  A collaboration with the Gay-Straight Alliance Network to evaluate LGBT Curriculum inclusion efforts in several schools in California to answer critical questions about both the type of content that makes a difference, the impact on student safety and school climate, and the issues that arise in the process of securing acceptance of curriculum inclusion from administrators and teachers. Additionally, a process assessment will be done of the adoption of a similar type of identity-based curriculum-ethnic studies curriculum—in San Francisco and Tucson school districts. Gay/Straight Alliance Year End Evaluations School Climate Surveys Description of RA duties: Research assistants will be responsible for assisting with data entry, administrative office tasks, and project-related research. Additional tasks may be assigned based on individual skills and interests. # Hours/Week (45 per unit): 2 units (6 hours/week) or 3 units (9 hours/week) Start/End Dates: Starting fall 2012. Preference will be given to applicants available to work through spring or summer of 2013. Schedule: Hours are flexible, although most work will occur in our office between 9am and 5pm. Research assistants will be asked to commit to a regular weekly schedule. Type of course: FSHD 492 Student characteristics: Students must be reliable, dedicated, and should possess strong communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
