all is clean-up time,

and this year we decided to have Buddy and His Pals help. The horses trimmed the grasses in the paddocks, rings and areas near the buildings too difficult to mow. The llamas ate weeds, and the cats kept mice out of the barn LENNY AND VINCE IN THE COLD-WEATHER COATS

ooler weather means getting the llamas’ shed and horses’ stalls

ready for winter. Each Fall we get a trailer load of sawdust from the local lumberyard. One wheelbarrow at a time we unload the trailer and pack the sawdust along the sides of each stall. We hang heated water buckets in the horses’ stalls, plug in a heated bowl for the cats, and heat the outside trough.

!

We winterize the llamas’ lean-to with hay. Not to waste fresh hay, I rake the hay from the barn floor and the uneaten hay in their paddock area. We make a deep pile on the floor to keep their undersides warm. As hairy as they are, llamas have very little fleece on their belly. To keep the wind out, we put hay against the openings along the bottom of the sides and back.

George made metal gates for two paddocks and the larger ring. After nearly 10 years, the wooden gates were falling apart.

!

Life off the farm has been heartwarming. “Buddy and His Pals” was favorably reviewed by Johnstown Magazine in its November issue and Susquehanna Life Magazine listed it as a ‘book to buy’ in its summer issue.

Tasha and Buddy at work

At the Dentist . . . Tasha

Annie

This was Tasha’s and Annie’s first visit to a dentist and they were nervous, tossing their heads and moving around. For their safety, and the safety of everyone around them, both were lightly sedated. Calmly, Tasha went into the chute. Even with a sedative, Annie wouldn’t go in the chute, but Walt Miles held her lead and she quietly let Dr. Bob file her teeth. Both horses needed the visit. Many of their back teeth had points which had to filed or ‘floated’ down to a smooth surface. If left untreated, the points could poke their mouth and cause ulcers.!

!

While Annie was at the dentist, Thunder had a more pleasant day visiting Buddy and his Pals. Although Annie and Thunder moved to their own barn in June, all the critters welcomed him back by running and jumping around the pasture, and eating at the hay feeder together.

FALL FUN

A few years ago, Kathy Matolyak and I took Vince and Lenny to Old Bedford Village’s Pumpkin Festival. They loved it; the kids loved it and we loved it. We walked the llamas around the village, read llama stories to the kids and talked about what great pets llamas make!

This fall scene was the inspiration for a story in Buddy and His Pals “… we got real worried when

Pop took Buddy for a long ride and we couldn’t see him. When they got back, I rubbed my nose against Buddy’s cheek. It was my way of telling Buddy I missed him.” Patches, a pal who once lived on the farm, enjoying a warm autumn day.

JOHNSTOWN MAGAZINE November 2015. . .

“A locally created children’s book will appeal to the younger set - a group that typically loves barnyard animals. The book is written by Loretta Radeschi who lives with her husband and beloved animals in Bedford. It is beautifully illustrated by another Bedford area resident, Cindy Inman, an art instructor.!

!

Our best wishes for a blessed and joyful Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Loretta, George and all the critters! Buddy, Bella, Jed, Lenny, Vince, Lisa, Laura!

Buddy and His Pals is the story of a horse and the friends he makes on the farm. They don’t get into much adventure in this book, but the animals learn to accept each other and, eventually, care for each other.!

!

“Friends can be found in all kinds of places, and not always where we expect them to be,” the book reads. A wonderful lesson for us all.!
