Not all Glass Blocks are Created Equal Pros and cons of glass block windows assemblies By LOUIS A BRUNO Certified Master Installer of Pittsburgh Corning Glass Block

O

ver the last 10 to 15 years, there has been a growing trend of assembling glass block windows with silicone caulking instead of the traditional method of using mortar cement. Being a trained mason and having had the opportunity to work for one of the largest glass block companies in North America, I was privy to information that was not readily available to the average Joe - the tricks of the trade, so to speak. When I started out in the trade, everyone was mortaring block windows together with Type-S mortar. It was how it was done, and it was not something that was easily done right with many factors influencing the outcome. Waiting for windows to dry, before installing or delivering to a builder or mason to install, could be stressful, to say the least. That was the only problem with the cement method. If not handled with extreme care, the windows could come apart before they were installed. You could forget about shipping one a long distance too. So someone said “why don’t we glue these together and then they won’t come apart.” Sounded like a good idea, but it left out one key factor to a glass block window and that is “the joint”. The joint is a necessity to a glass block window for many reasons: First, the joint is the buffer between the individual blocks. Glass block should never come in contact with one another. Direct contact could result in tension damage. Second, a mortar joint size can be adjusted to allow for a more custom fit of the window into the rough opening. For instance, a 32”X16”mortared panel can be made with different sized mortar joints making the window size different depending on each joints size. In my opinion, 3/16 of an inch should be the smallest with ½ inch being the largest. Third, if a glass block in an assembled window becomes broken, it can be repaired. If the glass block window is mortared together, the broken block can be shattered out. The mortar can be chipped away, leaving ample room to replace the block with plenty of room to mortar it back in. But if the glass blocks were glued together with caulk, the joint is nonexistent. Shattering the broken block out can lead to shattering the adjacent blocks. If you do manage to remove the defective block without further damage to any other blocks, sliding a new block into place is very difficult, especially if any settling has occurred. Fourth, mortared glass block comply with strength requirements and other code issues. Glass block windows also must maintain a fire rating, meaning the time it would take for the window to fail and deteriorate in a fire. Mortar handles thousands of degrees in temperature and so does glass block.Caulking, however, will melt at near 200 degrees. That is not safe in a stairwell or on a side walk, especially if the window is large and heavy. These are just some of the reasons that I prefer to remain doing things the old fashioned way. Glass blocks have been assembled for more than a century, with cement, a real tangible, structural building material. Masonry is, after all, the second oldest profession in history.

Example of broken block that can’t be replaced because caulking was used instead of mortar cement.

The electricity can be used for any household device, such as televisions and at. appliances. The heat produced can be used to heat your entire home, your household water, swimming pools and spas. Micro-CHP systems are extremely efficient, offering combined efficiency of up to 90 percent, compared to about 30 to 40 percent for electricity from a central power plant. The electric power produced by these systems displaces electricity generated by central power plants, reducing carbon emissions and conserving natural resources, such as coal. Meeting the Energy Demands of Any Size Home Micro-CHP units range in capacity from about 1 kW to 6 kW. These systems can serve the heating and electricity demands of virtually any size home. Units can connect to utility power as backup or be stand-alone systems for remote residences. Micro-CHP systems produce electricity at a very high efficiency when there is a demand for heating. Systems need to be properly sized for optimum efficiency. This is generally based on the amount of heat a home requires so that the unit runs the most possible hours in a year. If net metering is available (the utility pays the homeowner for electricity sent back into the grid), the systems can greatly reduce annual energy costs. Payback varies with fuel and electricity costs, net metering availability and the need for heat (e.g., a system heating a pool will provide useful heat and electricity year-round).
